11:01 pm
we are at the beautiful greek theater in los angeles with the great jay go on responsible for the summer anthem beats in his fifth number one single his new song we ain't got hit we ain't got it is that it we ain't got a leg and says we ain't got probably hit the charts or that hit the charts of a good line up so thanks for dropping me oh no you back i've currently is on tour with jake owens days of gold tour twenty four dean that goes through the end of october and he will host the a venue will a.c.m. a country american country music honors on september ninth at the famous ryman auditorium in nashville tell me about this tour what do we mean by days of gold and so we have a gold guitar. well you know there's my first single off the album called days ago it was the first chose to put on the record and the days
11:02 pm
a gold to me are the times you remember and the great times in life and right now are some pretty great times in my life i got married couple years ago i have a beautiful daughter so my first big headline tour so it just seemed appropriate to name the album that name the tour that are all the songs symbolic of this i think. i think so and then there's also some as well that aren't necessarily on a silly parallel that idea but they say a lot about who i am as a person and i think that's the good part about making music is that you can do that in a previous album barefoot blue jean night gave you for a number one hits that one album right now is that will made it for you what made it how did how did jay go on going for being the opening act to a star. was there a it what happened. ten years went by and and in between that time i have a lot of great people that i work with. that have been with me since day one i've
11:03 pm
put together song after song i think patients happened a little a little bit. but the song they really did it for me it was definitely that album verifiability night and never had a number one and so then i was like about six seven years into my career and that album came out barefoot blue jean i went number one and then we had four in a row after that kind of. i was kind of off to the races at that point this is your first big tour you say you do small ones i've done smaller tours. where i was headlining but i've been on every major tour you can imagine up in so that i've been with every artist from some of my heroes like kenny chesney you name it i've been out there and so i learned a lot from all those guys and brought a lot of that with me now it's always interesting to be the opening act in this because you know the crowd is there for the other guy yet so it's now it's reversed
11:04 pm
for me and it's funny you said that because. the first few nights of this tour and honestly of you the same lights and i hear the creek area and we're playing at the greek theater and i'm talking to larry king this is the first for it this is this is crazy and i'll walk out there tonight and people will start screaming in the saying and i am now the guy with the name on the ticket and i was always the guy before that was kind of just getting people warmed up you know what was it like to be the guy before what what's it like to go on stage when you know the crowd really doesn't know you very well or at all and they're waiting to see is that says what's it like. i mean it is that pressure or not pressure no there's really no pressure at that point i don't think you know it's funny said that the other night played at a festival at the gorge in washington and we had i was headlining and there were six or seven artists playing before me and everyone that played it was so great in
11:05 pm
their own right but i saw myself in every single one of them because as an opening act all you want to do is absolutely crush every other person that you're playing with and you want to step on the headliner you want to make the headliner a little yeah and admits that yeah you want to eat of course if anyone's ever admitted that they're alive but if you're opening act all you want to do is go out there and completely try to try to one up the guy whose name is on the ticket and i think as a headliner i appreciate that when the guys that i'm taking out the kalak through with me frankie bard's winner tonight we have you know young band of partly out with us if they go out there and they give everything they have to try to want to me good for them because they will that's how you get to this spot but at the same time too you're helping my two out i was helping kenny out and anyone else i was out on tour with by just giving one hundred ten percent roleystone dot com article does rise said you were the heir to kenny chesney's country beach bum first son. what do they mean by that i have no clue larry i don't know i just because you know
11:06 pm
there's a bit of. ocean influence in my music i am from florida. my mom would say myers you know little a little too long. but i'm a carefree kind of guy but that also carries a lot if that makes sense i can. try to live carefree but i care about a lot of things in my life and maybe i don't know i don't know what they think that but i'll take it tell me about the latest single what we ain't got until then it's a different zone it's way different. well considering the beach bum personify that they gave me it's a long way from that it's a song about real life situations. that a lot of people deal with on a daily basis the hook of the songs are really kind of generates around a guy who loses is the woman in his life and once in you we all want what we don't have and but there's
11:07 pm
a lot of things in the song and speak on all levels for me personally when i when i first heard the siren late in a way where i work every day so hard that it sometimes takes me away from the things that are right in front of me my wife my child my friends my brother my mom and dad just call him back things like that and sometimes there's a lot of the song says i wanted the world and so my whole world stopped and i don't ever want my world to stop and i think sometimes we all just need to understand that that we can work our lives away while and you know we just need to share it with the people around us and wow did you write the song you don't write this i didn't write this song it's a song i was lucky enough to find on a guy named travis meadows album and he wrote it about his personal life experience going through a divorce with his wife and i feel like i'm not a point my career where people are listening and to be able to put a song out like that it's my responsibility to do that true about the shoulder injury in college is responsible for you taking of the kids are very you know what
11:08 pm
you are not you would florida state right i want to florida state i was the. i want to play golf there on the golf team was in a walk on much one brother had a full riot there in tennis and i had some other offers to play smaller schools but want to be a punchline rather so i went there and ironically enough had a at a shoulder surgery after an accident water skiing and i don't know if that was the reason i started or i picked up guitar but i know that. it was like a way that my life told me that maybe it's supposed to take a different path so there's that you have to be nineteen twenty years old i was nineteen twenty years old i do son before it all in the shower in the car i remember when rather as promised this is the honest truth i'm never forget it just kind of singing along to a song and my brother are set in the backseat of the car on time and he's like mom you should like do something with jake because i think you can sing ok i'm never good. but that was early i was young like ten eleven years old and but when i
11:09 pm
finally found that music was something i wanted to do and it's weird when you find that one thing in life that you're so passionate about it's doesn't seem that hard to do it when you love it you know you might not be good at it at the start but if you love it enough you can make yourself better what is your brother do he sells insurance and he's great at it doesn't sing. a whole thing after a couple beers larry. was what was it like growing up a twin. did you like food girls did you date and then when we never did we never did the whole full the teacher kind of thing where we cause we hadn't ever looked that much alike but one thing it did make me and all my friends would say this is i'm really competitive really competitive i just want to win everything i don't care if it's a video game or if it's or if it's coming out here and playing my music fighting your brother oh yeah yeah the years just from always if i wanted to play baseball or throw a ball in the front yard there are from always who could throw farther if i wanted
11:10 pm
to play a basketball game and i always had apartment play basketball with i want to swim in the pool with race to the other side if you know if you know if we're gone fishin who's going to catch more fish and it's kind of made me competitive and i think maybe work our other ever days when you said i think you know robin the top pro golfer. now i mean i mean you agree that i was i was i was pretty good but i don't think i ever loved it enough in order to be great some of the you have to really really love it and i don't think i'd love to know if the way those guys do you to be successful as a whereas i love this so much that no matter if i was never successful at this i would feel successful because i love it you know when did you know you were good. i think i'm still figuring. seriously i mean it there's nights where i
11:11 pm
watch myself or watch the playback of the video like i have to get better but i think i knew that i don't say that i was good but i knew that i could i was i could play well enough to entertain people i'm good at entertaining people to talk go up to the audience. oh i talk so much like but i just i entered i engage with them i let them know that thank you for coming you don't have to be here and so since you decided to be here i'm going to make sure that when you leave you tell every one and all your friends that they need to come next time too because they think they need to be you know do you enjoy playing as much as saying and. i do i do it's time it's hard to be on the road it's hard to sing three four nights a week and get up in the morning and do the phoners and do the interviews it's hard to do this so that wears on me a little bit and it's tough because it's college being a professional pitcher or something where your arm certain a little bit but you know you need your signed a multimillion dollar contract and you've got to get out there and sling that ball
11:12 pm
because people are counting and there's days where i know my voice is tired but i know i got guys in the band and fans that i've been waiting all day outside the gate to hear me sing and so yeah i love this more than anything but there's days where as hot as heart it's really hard to get up there and smile and have a perfect day every day how good a guitarist already. i'm pretty good you learned lessons or no taught myself kind of i never i think maybe took one lesson well as for just to learn chords but kind of taught myself i'm great people around me i was amazing musicians around me every day and my dad always said it's going to learn something just watched people are the best at it and i get pretty good advice on a daily basis more with the jayco and that was what a name he's made from so what a great talent with the right that.
11:13 pm
america is joining me on for things that impartial and financial reporting commentary contributes and much much. only on bass and i don't plan on. playing.
11:14 pm
crosstalk rules in effect that means you can jump in anytime you want.
11:15 pm
we're back with jake owen he's starring at the greek theater here he's in the midst of a tour that ends in october and then what do you record again. but i don't really have a recording schedule so much on record songs as i either write them or find them i try not to do the quintessential let's block this time off going you have to be creative in the stuff i do this if i feel it i'll go and record if i have to but hopefully when the time comes around off i'll be more time with my family along even doing the tour this tour started in march started in march but you know there's so much going before that i think i can really never stop as you're ending one tour you're thinking about what you're going to do for the next tour then you have rehearsals and then you've got you go to the first venue site rehearse there for a couple days and then you take it off and it started in march you know you've got to before you go on stage you know you've got it. yeah you have to i think
11:16 pm
you have to it's kind of like anything it's like when i was playing golf i stepped up to a golf ball in my mind was in it step away tell me about this boding thing only as one of the sponsors of the story discover boating they are is a great partnership i've never i've had a couples father ships over my career. is an equal partnership just because it kind of as i've grown a part of growing is identifying yourself to your audience and i've been really fortunate to develop an identity where people associate me with being from florida in the water being out i'm always on my boat all the time if i'm not here i love being on the water so it's nice to be able to go out there and help they help promote me i help promote then and we enjoy the same things whereas i'm not going out there you know promoting in something that i don't know much about what do you love about it out there so as you bounce up and down
11:17 pm
a lot going to go shouldn't i go i go wherever i don't i'll go on a pond if it floats i care i just like there's something about i've always been that way if you look at photos needed from the time i was a kid i was on a boat when i was twelve years old my dad got me this little boston whaler in it had this thirty five horsepower johnson on the back of it and he just i can't believe it when i go back home and look at any interview lagoon how big it is and how it's just sprawls behind mangroves and i just said go and he set me free as a kid and i just think about that now growing up that's why i love it that's why because it's free i used to go by myself after school and fill up a six county gas tank. that i had to mix oil into and i could goes all day long what's it like being a father. it's the most rewarding thing that i've ever that i've ever done i will do says she's almost two and it's great because i i will admit.
11:18 pm
a really would have liked to have had a boy up until i had her. and then when she was born and the time i spent with her i feel like i could have a lot more girls because she is the daddy people and she the love she shows me is. is just the greatest ever to me your wife we met through their music in this business she was. part of the video i made years and years ago and she was like a backup singer she was not she was the girl in the video she was the love interest and all she gave me the time of day the fact that site is kind of it's all about soldier and competitive. flow really into she is she is from orlando from vero beach who will be home one of the used to be the home of the dodgers right we did you want to dodgy all the time every every i have
11:19 pm
a photo in my bus of my brother and island we were eight and nine years old and watching the fireworks at home stadium just with this look of wonderment on our face and i keep that my bus because it always reminds me want to be on to of just the love i have to have my brother and our and our bond and three to never stop being amazed at things to never stop going well right then the day you lose that why live yeah. ever find yourself on stage and forget what city you're him. no i've never done that aka nas it's a i've never done that now that on stage and forgot words to songs completely as kind of make stuff up as i go along or just kind of just let the music go and i start laughing or something that i don't ever i never forget where you get your first in person gay god you get to open for somebody who's the first artist you
11:20 pm
open for. kenny chesney that is how to get that i said a blessing and a pure luck in. a long story short i told myself from the time i saw him play in concert this is wild but i love telling the story because there's kids out there that feel the same way when they come to my show they want to do this you can you can do this this is so it can these shows. and i said i want to do what he's doing i want to do this. and i moved to nashville dropped out of college started writing a lot of songs he actually put one of my songs on what they call hold up that he wanted to record it ended up not recording it but i got to meet him and it kind of drew me to the same management company that he has and thankfully they want to put my first record out he was going out on tour and i was the baby actually got to go out there and you know play to remember that night i'm never forget it the same as
11:21 pm
my best friend will be here tonight at the greek theater he was there he played professional tennis my whole life my fifteen year old best friend turned pro fifteen when i was still in high school and i couldn't imagine like what's it like to travel around the world and played since and he always told me he was always supportive of me and mardy fish he always said i promise i mean when you win you keep playing your music your third you're going to open for you're going to open for it can chose the one day i'll be there and he's here tonight but he was there the day in hershey pennsylvania that i opened for kenny chesney and it was maybe marty my mom and dad and a few other people in the crowd what was a night like for you i got how to be nervous i was so drunk. i was you're drunk wagerup like why would you go opening night for pennies yeah your first time i did say i thought about this hundreds of times why did i do that. number one because a lot of it seems like a blur but aren't too i was really nervous my best friend came up to watch me open for any age as a mom and dad were there my brother my twin brother everything that i'd ever worked
11:22 pm
for and that i said i was going to do. i was going to do that night so i played it for thirty in the afternoon and i had a couple drinks you know before a plane not realizing it's like three thirty you know and plus plus on kenny chesney's tours everybody everywhere you go there hand you know margarita you know and i'm like and kenny's walking by going hey jake and i had to pretend like i wasn't a super fan you know like i'm the guy that's cool enough to be opening up a show so yeah i got a little tipsy that i. did you forget larry no i didn't i mean i did a great show but i just i've remembered just getting a little too far into it again a little overeager a few social media questions filmed on instagram what has been your favorite moment on the tour other than this moment right now. this is a pretty good i'm sorry. my favorite moment on the tour.

11:27 pm
a couple times that's thing about country music that touches everybody yes right. but it's also i think the fact that of the artist within it are accessible to the fans and they are were first were not trying to be like you know they get any acts or bigger than anyone we're thankful for what we have based on these fans that are the most important word is they're loyal and once they want you they buy into what you're doing and you treat them well continue to come back and they bring their kids and everyone does that sort of get a home run on run lead to johnny cash or elvis presley. i have to say elvis. opus yeah cash was more country like elvis is an entertainer so that's what you jake thanks thanks and great great having you with us thank you jay go and do a mentor but that's a that's a compliment see it makes sense. but
