i think there is a better way to go we can do so much more as a country that's why i decided to write this book to get it done does it have to be a cooperation between the executive in the congress i think it does but you also have to win an argument and the argument is which way should we go. point a great contrast to the different kinds of governing philosophies that are being deployed i would argue that the president is you know a very left of center president i talk about liberal progressivism how his governing philosophy in the policies that come from it are the wrong way to go and how the founding principles applied to the problems of the day are the right way to go which will lead to more freedom more opportunity of a stronger communities in a more vibrant civil society and so i do believe we need to have an argument or debate in this country in a civil way about the better way forward so that we can have real elections about a meaningful choice so that we can get let the people the country decide what kind of country they want to have what do we want our future to look like what policies do we want i think we will have an eight years of missed opportunities eight years
12:30 pm
of negligence on getting our fiscal house in order of getting our economy to grow at its potential the c.b.l. just today said we're going to grow one point five percent that's even slower than last year's one point nine percent we can do a whole lot better than this larry and as a result millions of americans are struggling are in poverty and are worried about whether they can make it as you say do it in a civil way with the antipathy in this country i know a lot of people would say house hauser. i worry about that quite frankly larry and that's one of the reasons why i also wrote this book to talk about lessons that i myself have learned about how to communicate more effectively be more inclusive i don't want to practice identity politics i don't like the politics of preying on people's emotions of fear of envy and egg anxiety what i'm trying to to collate is to unify republicans in a conservative movement and do it in a way that is inclusive that's aspirational that's principled and that is capable
12:31 pm
of appealing to a majority of americans in a unifying way in an optimistic way to give the country a really good choice so they can make an affirming choice of how we want to go so that if and when we win that kind of an election the kind i would love to have for our country then you have the obligation you have the moral authority you have the mandate to make the kinds of changes that are necessary to get us on the right track to pay off our debt to balance our budget to grow our economy to keep us strong internationally so we can stay safe and to help get people out of poverty especially after we have the highest poverty rates in a generation and we've had fifty years of war and poverty you write in the book one of the mistakes your party made was shutting down the government that doesn't answer questions does it to shut down the government. because it defines us as to what we're against not is what we're in favor of and the point i was trying to make in that passage is that can't be the full measure of our party look i don't like obamacare i thought it every inch i am for repealing it and i've shown what i would
12:32 pm
replace it with in this book we also have to show what we would do differently i really believe larry that people don't like the track we're on most americans think america's heading in the wrong direction they worry about the future for their kids and their grand kids but they have to be presented with an alternative that to me is what public servants should do and that's what i'm trying to do with this book the book is the way forward discuss some current things with congressman paul ryan of wisconsin. the chairman by the way of the house budget committee so he knows numbers. what the most incredible thing to me of recent vintage is isis and there's lots of think what to do what to do how to handle a group like this it's not a nation they behead people you have any thoughts on that what can we do. i do worry larry that the president may not see this moment for what it is and how important it is not just for him but for our country the reason is are we going to
12:33 pm
show international jihad is are we going to show terrorists worldwide that we are capable of fully defeating them or are we going to have a containment policy which is an incentive for more terrorist attacks here's what i mean i think we made some big mistakes in syria and in iraq with the administration but these mistakes can be improved upon i think the president should not simply talk about how he's going to contain or respond to things or react to events like the mosul dam or the possible genocide i think the president needs to articulate that he has a plan a campaign strategy to finish isis off to fully defeat isis and then prosecute it it will take time listen to our military help enable the iraqis the sunni's the shias and the kurds the pressure morgan particular to give them the four air cover they need the enabling that they need to fully bring the fight to isis and make sure that we finish isis off because right now we've got people as many as a couple of thousand foreign fighters according to reports with foreign passports
12:34 pm
who are in this area now let's fight them there where they are where they are containable and not let this get out of control and see them decentralized throughout the world and bring chaos to our shores but you don't agree with fighting them with boots on the ground so that is a criticism what's what would you do would you keep the bombing up what would you do yes oh look i don't like the idea of playing armchair general from congress i would listen to our military as to what is it going to take to finish isis off my reading of events and the advice we've been getting is that we have boots on the ground there in the form of the iraqis and form of the free syrian army that we could do a lot more to enable them and with with impressive air power which we clearly have and should be using but again the goal should be. off isis let our generals put together a strategy to do that and my understanding of the current events are that let's enable the brutes that are on the ground who are our allies they need to be a big part of this fight they be the tip of the spear and we can bring
12:35 pm
a lot of things to enable them to do this whether it's enablers logisticians special forces in clearly superior air air power without jumping to conclusions do you have the same thoughts on ferguson missouri you know i really don't other than what's already been said it's a tragedy i think we know they just laid michael brown the rest let's pray for his family let's think about the community let's keep them in our hearts our prayers and let's not prejudge let the investigators do their job do it thoroughly so that they can get the facts out so that justice can be served and let us honor the process because it's important that it's done in a in a forward and thorough way and let's just not prejudge what about the republican party and its problems you write is about this in a book with minorities if the party theory if the if the blacks in the latino's feel that they that your party's not in their corner they're going to have a rough time in national elections. yeah i talk about how it's important that we
12:36 pm
build a unified conservative movement that's majority and just like i learned from my my mentor jack kemp who you knew very very well we need to take our message everywhere to everybody look if i don't agree with the founding principles of liberty freedom self-determination self-government of the rule of law then i shouldn't offend it i believe in those principles i think that the best principles to organize a country i think we're such an exceptional country as a result of it we have so much more to do to involve a culture of inclusiveness to bring people into our economy to have pro growth economic policy reforms to get upward mobility better jobs better take home pay bring people in and i want to take this message everywhere we should as a moral point take our message to everybody in every corner of this country especially the people who are not familiar with our ideas who don't know us because out of respect for our fellow human beings but also i believe we can win converts to our cause that's what i've been doing for the last two years around the country
12:37 pm
learning in listening and engaging with people in communities that don't typically vote republican and also i really believe that a unified movement that is based upon these great principles that made a special can deliver good reforms that can include everybody in the economy and get us out of the doldrums we are in we are the fiftieth year in the war on poverty and with the highest poverty rates in a generation let's think about something different and break this cycle and i think we can have good ideas to bring to the table it should include people to a coalition with your router with your going about the past two years with the publication of this book with the public's knowledge of you have to running for vice president with your standard bearer mitt romney say that he has no interest in running again he would have to lead like draft doesn't expect that are you going to run. i don't know i really don't i'm going to make that mind up with my family in two thousand and fifteen as a result right now because of the things you just said i feel i have an opportunity to add a voice to offer ideas to show alternative is to help build
12:38 pm
a conservative movement a republican party that's aspirational inclusive and you know shows alternatives i don't like the direction the country is headed i feel like we should offer an alternative i can do that no matter what it is i choose to do in the future on that question i'm going to make that decision twenty fifteen years spent clinton to run with no way of knowing but do expect it i think so yeah i think we should expect that it wouldn't be on for the larry would i don't know or very well but it would surprise me if she takes a pass but i think her party is going to be desperate to get her into the race what do we do about this we discussed cleavage earlier the president has a very low rating the only lower rating is congress which is at fourteen percent so that means the public doesn't like anybody. in this room for improvement. lots how do you deal with the mood like that in the country. i think what i'm trying to do is at ideas look i know anytime you try to take on the status quo it's going to be a little controversial but i think people appreciate the fact that we're trying i get
12:39 pm
this all the time in my congressional district for all the budget plans i've put out there for the reason poverty initiative that i've engaged in people tell me look i don't always agree with you but at least you're trying at least you have an idea and solutions the more of us that do that the better off we're going to be and my whole thinking with all of this is a little humility goes a long way put your ideas out there don't tell the country that you know it all you've got it all figured out but they're trying to start a conversation you put ideas on the table hopefully that will invite more than just criticism we'll get that but to invite other people to put their ideas on the table to to break the log jam to start having a solution based conversation to at the end of the day start solving problems that's what i'm trying to do i can control my own actions that's that's what i think is what a public service should do and so i think of more of us do that i think will increase our likelihood or popularity because people see it stop pointing fingers at each other and yelling at each other and about how do we solve problems and i
12:40 pm
think that's something that all of us myself included can do a better job of doing president george bush trusts him unlike him has changed we reading them wrong. i think we probably right or wrong i mean i think you can take the guy out of the k.g.b. you can't take the k.g.b. out of the guy and i think he was probably like this all along. i think my running mate mitt romney did pretty well was was proven in vindicated correctly so yeah i do think putin has probably been consistent in what he has been i think he feels he's a little stronger now that he has petro dollars forty percent of his revenue come from oil and gas i also think when the president blinked on syria when the president gave up unilaterally missile defense when he signed a nuclear arms treaty with russia that i think was to russia's betterment i think that made us look weak i think that gave putin taishan to be aggressive and i think in large part our poor foreign policy bad decisions have given rise to this kind of
12:41 pm
aggressiveness we've seen from vladimir putin paul good seeing you again thanks so much o.c. in washington all right you too larry take care thank you congressman paul ryan appreciate his time today the book is the way forward renewing the american it's on sale everywhere up next reaction from the other side of the congressional representative debbie wasserman schultz of florida she says paul ryan's bottom line would be bad for america we'll find out why. a. very hard to take. that that we are right here.
12:42 pm
12:43 pm
should be in the know. on. we think of why we think there are no. rules and beaches. coconut palms gently swaying in the ocean breeze. in fact. white has a deep dark little secret a secret the u.s. government would like you to know. we're all a. little bolide dead nearly succeeded a pig in all wilderness. facing the abyss ukraine is running out of options as winter approaches with a crashing economy the regime in kiev he's hinted it may be looking to end the civil war but the train may have already left the station.
12:44 pm
your friend posts a photo from a vacation you can't afford. to different. the boss repeats the same old joke of course you like. your ex-girlfriend still tends to rejection poetry keep. ignore it. we post only what really matters at r.t. to your facebook news feed. politicking analogy reaction from the other side of the aggression while representative debbie wasserman schultz of florida she's chairwoman of the democratic national committee she's also chief deputy whip and according to her paul ryan's bottom line would be bad for america and she joins us from orlando tongues and ryan says that the united states in his book is headed in the wrong
12:45 pm
direction and debbie a lot of public opinion seems to back them up are we headed weirdly wrong well no in fact if you look at americans opinions about the economy americans actually have quite a bit of confidence in the economy that they're feeling that the progress that we've made is is a good thing we've we've had fifty one straight months of job growth in the private sector the last six months straight more jobs more than two hundred thousand jobs created that's the first time since that's happened since one nine hundred ninety seven you know about but the reality is is that americans feel that they're standing on quicksand a little bit there they feel the ground is uncertain why because republicans are hell bent on obstruction republicans like paul ryan even when we've had got a budget deal earlier this year put aside the sequester that paul ryan still pushes through his budget that ends medicare as we know it that would work to move towards
12:46 pm
privatizing social security that cuts education and increases taxes on the middle class so that we can so that we can cut taxes for the wealthiest most fortunate americans that's why americans are concerned that we're not going to actually be able to maintain the prosperity that we've finally returned to congresswoman i think the president's ratings are very low the only body lower is congress so obviously this. is the. way over fifty percent is on the if we go by the polls all we need to do is we should be working together paul ryan and his team. party buddies should stop trying to obstruct and stop the president at every turn he should let go of his obsession with ending medicare as we know it and turning it into a voucher system that would cost seniors i mean i can't believe i'm having this conversation with you again that would cost seniors about sixty four hundred dollars more in premiums i mean how is that going to grow americans confidence and make them feel
12:47 pm
better about the opportunities that they have republicans that are controlled by the tea party in the house and the senate they want to double down on on extremism they want to move away from fighting for the middle class and working families as president obama has and they refuse to work with this president and you know it's no wonder the american people aren't aren't confident because republicans have done everything they can to shake their confidence in anything move that the republicans are going to keep the house maybe get the senate obama has another two years one option i think will hold on to the senate at the end of the day larry over the next sixty nine days you're going to have a choice presented very clearly for the voters and they're going to go to the polls and ask themselves who has my back you know who's going to be in there swinging looking out for me making sure that if i work hard if i play by the rules that i'll have a chance to succeed and that question i think will be answered consistently by voters all across this country in competitive districts that it's democrats that will have
12:48 pm
their back and you know and republicans have given them the back of their hand you know republicans have focused on creating more opportunities for the few and democrats have focused on creating more opportunities for more people and and that's a pretty stark contrast and one that i think americans will embrace and elect democrats to congress as well as to the united states senate and by the way governors as well i think there will be more democratic governors on november fifth the day after the election than there are today as a result in recent illegal immigrants quote essentially become the backbone of our economy. that's a good thing hugh but i think they are a part of the backbone of their of our economy i think if you ask the construction industry the restaurant industry and so many of the industries that we have that are part of a critical part of our economy they will they will tell us why they're for comprehensive immigration reform it's why the u.s. chamber of commerce is for comprehensive immigration reform and why we can't simply
12:49 pm
take up the senate bill which is a bipartisan bill that was passed over a year and a half ago is baffling to me but i guess i shouldn't be surprised because yesterday marco rubio did an interview with politico and actually suggested that if the president acts on immigration reform because the house refuses to that that he's for using the budget and potentially threaten shutting the shutting the government down to stop the president from actually implementing immigration reform it's outrageous i mean again we're going to do this again they didn't learn a year ago cost our economy twenty four billion dollars that's why americans don't have confidence because we've got republicans who are doing everything they can to drag us backwards to move people forward ryan said shutting down the government was a mistake and i don't think he'd be in favor of it now well let's see if he votes for a budget proposal that would try to stop the president after he's implemented immigration reform when the house refuses to see us usually leave you with my friend jorge
12:50 pm
ramos that when it comes to immigration you call a trigger a big tree in many house republicans the dream. well i think part of the i think there's no question that that part of the motivation for republicans tea party opposition to comprehensive immigration reform sadly is stems from bigotry i couldn't name names but i think that that's definitely part of it but what's more deeply concerning is how the republicans have allowed the tea party to get such a stranglehold even on the members of congress on the republican side of the aisle that understand that immigration reform is something that we need to do that is the right thing to do the humane thing to do and the smart thing to do for our economy it would actually reduce our deficit if we if we implement comprehensive immigration reform and ignore even jeb bush said that ignoring the documented immigrants is would be sticking our heads in the sand i guess the republicans like
12:51 pm
to like to walk with their heads fully submerged in the sand switching to another area congressman ryan says with regard to ice we should listen to our military they're all really boots on the ground there rocky beach we should support them and we should be more aggressive than we have been where you think well i think that president obama is reviewing the options with his advisors and has already authorized airstrikes and and i think as those continue to be appropriate we have to make sure that we address isis as the threat that it is their moral depravity is really unprecedented and we have to do what we need to do militarily that as advised by the president's military strategists to protect american interests and what americans want you waiting for though of course this brutality continues daily well i mean like i said he's all he's not waiting he's already he's already engaged
12:52 pm
in airstrikes and in fact sent in wasn't planning to reveal it but. already sent in special operations forces to try. to rescue captured americans i mean the president i think confidence is not only on top of this but wants to make sure that the actions that we take militarily make sense and actually accomplish our goals and so it makes sense so you look we've had the longest series years of war that we've had really ever and americans are war weary and they want to make sure we protect national security interests but they also are definitely tired of war is you keep you in the loop dizzee me do. these airstrikes. you know i think the president has the authorization and the flexibility to be able to engage in the air strikes and you know he's been consulting with congress and will continue to consult with the congressional leadership. but you know if we're for limiting it to
12:53 pm
air strikes i'm confident that the president has the flexibility and the authorization that he needs what do you make. of the incursions there in the ukraine. the incursions and the the actions of mr putin have been unacceptable outrageous president obama has has repeatedly said that the russians need to pull back mr putin needs to pull back from ukraine and stop sending your military and and other personnel over the over the border and threatening ukraine and its sovereignty and that's why we we have been and will continue to add to levy economic sanctions because we've got to keep tightening that the those sanctions so that the pain makes sense and he understands that
12:54 pm
it's just going to get worse for him if he keeps infringing on another on a sovereign nation politically beach back to lutheran. you know i know that she's not made that decision yet i am really excited that as are democrats across the country that she's going to be getting out there in the fall campaign for our candidates we were able to announce at the democratic national committee that she's going to be speaking at the women's leadership forum conference which is really exciting at our twenty first annual and she's going to be doing some advance for us around the country we're really excited about that and i think she's going to be a big boost for democrats across the country paul ryan said he will decide next year jill ryan if he ran would he be formidable you know i think he's already been rejected. running mate mr romney because the american people when presented with a very clear contrast between democrats under president obama's leadership direction which was you know if you work hard and you pray play by the rules that
12:55 pm
everyone should happen an opportunity to succeed not just the people that already are successful and mitt romney and paul ryan's plans which were to turn medicare into a voucher system increase premiums for seniors repeal the affordable care act move towards privatization of social security and he's doubled down on that now with this book so no i don't think he's going to be a very formidable candidate certainly not it not if he actually makes it to a general election but that the party certainly will welcome him with open arms the gentleman you mentioned would he be the most formally personally i would just bush be the person most formidable on the other side in your opinion you know it's not for me to assess who would be formidable or not you know the collection of potential republican candidates for president you know they'll be busy out right wing each other and trying to just like all the republican candidates across the country you know the establishment in the republican party has completely been swallowed whole by the tea party and so you know one will try to outright win the
12:56 pm
next and there's not going to be much difference the only way for jeb bush or any of them to become their party's nominee is to be so extreme that they become unelectable in the general election you come back to your reserve believe that they . really get a significant legislation before the elections you know we've got ten legislative days when we come back before we adjourn for the elections so this is the do nothing or do nothing congress is because republicans refuse to work with president obama it's so sad larry you know we know that my way the highway politics isn't moving us forward and there's a reason that congress' approval rating is so low it's because republicans refuse to work with president obama congressional democrats to just make sure that we can create jobs and get. economy turns around and create more opportunities for people to to reach the middle class instead they see the president for doing his job when they won't do theirs they have more show hearings on benghazi i mean it's just the american people just are saying and that's enough just that's work together because
12:57 pm
i want you to focus on the things i care about i want you to have my back and that's why sixty nine days from now americans will go to the polls and vote for democratic candidates because they want government they want congress to make sure that we have their back and that we create more opportunities for them to be successful debbie always good seeing you thank you so to larry thank you so much thanks to congresswoman debbie wasserman schultz she's always welcome on politicking and remember i want to hear from you you can join the conversation on my facebook page and share your thoughts on twitter by tweeting at king's things and use the politics he has dragged that's all for this week's politicking.
