it's september second in washington d.c. i'm lynn neary david and you're watching are to america we begin today with the tragic news out of syria the islamic militant group isis has beheaded stephen sought lof an american freelance journalist who was abducted a year ago a video was made public today that shows the brutal murder of video titled a second message to america opens with a clip of president obama talking about isis after the death of james foley now he was the other american journalist who fell victim to the same fate just two weeks ago speaking to the camera live questions u.s. intervention in the middle east and blames obama for quote marching us the american people into. blazing fire the video's release comes just after the us struck isis

interests in iraq over the weekend meanwhile we're learning that the u.s. is targeting another terrorist group this time in somalia today a u.s. drone struck the leader of the al qaeda linked al-shabaab group to discuss the very latest earlier i spoke to our teeth alexy arash esky and i first asked him to talk about who's even thought last wives and how he came to be captured by isis well stephen saw it last was a freelance journalist a us freelance journalist working for some prominent media outlets such as the time magazine he even if you know c.n.n. and fox and sometimes he used to work at the middle east for very long spell of time until in last year in august twenty third team he was captured in syria in the town of aleppo during the time when he was covering the fighting between the government and the rebel forces there as we understand although this video is still

i believe we're expecting more reactions to come during the day because as we remember the last time with james foley the authenticity of the video was proved quite quite quickly took them just literally three or four hours to verify that video so we heard from the white house spokesman that the video will be very fired but there is little doubt that given the authenticity of james foley video that this video be authentic as well as the white house spokesperson already expressed condolences to the family of seesawed love also described this video as an absolutely gruesome and sickening and alexi over the weekend the u.s. delivered more airstrikes against isis in iraq the u.s. also hit militants of another terrorist group al-shabaab in somalia what do we know about that operation well there's not much known about that operation in somalia we do know that according to sources in washington the al shabaab militant group operating in africa in somalia in kenya and many other countries was indeed hit by

in blood and their own waist some have had bags over their heads like the pictures we have seen stacked on top of each other and in other very painful looking poses and humiliating poses as well and there's two thousand of them in this trove that is being held so far so with two thousand of them yet to be released it's hard to imagine what we could next see that would be worse than what we've already seen and as i understand it there's been a huge struggle to get these images released over the last several years these images were said to be released back in two thousand and nine why were they alternately how back. well over julie back in two thousand and nine. nuri al maliki had asked the government to please hold him back because of the widespread resistance in iraq to the american presence there and the up people they

release could then cause was not something he thought would be a wise idea now this torture narrative was was coming out of prisons run by the us abroad after the nine eleven attacks i was really groups like amnesty international that were hearing the testimony or or confessions of what many of these prisoners had experienced after they had been released the a.c.l.u. brought a lawsuit against the u.s. government demanding the release of images recordings videos of torture and then in two thousand and four when a handful of these images were released it really brought this argument to the forefront how dare the u.s. government act against its own principles and it was then in two thousand and five that judge hellerstein heller side rather ruled that the government needed to release the images but in two thousand and nine before those images could be

released congress passed a law stating that the defense secretary could certify a three year ban on a release if he determines that the u.s. military and its personnel were in any way in danger because of the release of these images well in two thousand and nine that stuck and then in two thousand and twelve the next secretary of defense leon panetta attempted to issue another three year certification and the judge has now decided to revisit this case and just says listen with the passing of time we need to to look at this and you really got to make a case for keeping these two thousand images away from the public eye i need more of a reason why. i if you're in too much danger if these images are released in his writings . after he he made this decision just last week he said you know i've got a problem with secretary panetta not fully reviewing all two thousand of these

images only a handful were looked at and then all two thousand were deemed unsuitable for public release i need more evidence from all of you so that's where it stands now and it looks as if if it's up to him these new images could be released to the public very soon especially with a lot going on in iraq right now it's going to cause for some concern it does seem like they're close to being relieved but is there a concern that that showing these photos could do more damage today and they could have done back in two thousand and nine just considering everything that's going on in iraq with the escalation of isis and anti-american sentiment in the region. well that's been the argument when is a good time to release this sort of information these images that just make such an impression of what the u.s. has been doing abroad in these prisons so that's really a big issue right now is with isis beheading journalists over there and issuing

statements saying well this is an eye for an eye americans treats treats our muslim brothers like this in prison we will treat our detainees in the same manner is it propaganda or are they truly doing that because of of images like those came out of op with graves who's to know for sure so the governments now and has and i'm sorry the secretary of defense of staff needs to make their case to the judge dell have a chance to do that just in just a few days on september eighth and then we'll see what the judge decides if we finally get to take a peek at the two thousand images that were taken and if not then there's going to got to be a very good reason why so we'll be keeping a very close eye on this to see what happens looking forward to hearing a verdict on that all right archie correspondent lindsey fran thanks for that reporting. and now to israel where numerous neighborhoods in east jerusalem were engulfed in violence on saturday night hundreds of palestinians clashed with police

and jewish residents according to israeli officials the violence was abruptly quelled by riot police equipped with stun grenades tear gas and sponge bullets and there were no serious injuries or arrests made but palestinians in east jerusalem are no stranger to arrests over the past several weeks police have arrested over five hundred and fifty arabs were rioting in protest sparked by the heinous murder of sixteen year old mohammad al had there mohammad was burnt to death by israeli settlers and what was seen as a revenge killing for the earlier murder of three israeli teens interesting lee many of those who have been arrested in the aftermath of this are part of mohammed's family now you may remember this video going viral showing the brutal beating of another boy fifteen year old toric who could bear same last name same family parekh is a u.s.

citizen after spending days in jail with no charges he was finally released and returned back to his home in tampa florida but others in the same family haven't been so lucky one of his cousins in one thousand year old also named mohammed adair is still being detained despite the fact that he too is a u.s. citizen many more in the family have also been arrested for reasons unknown to talk about their experience i was joined earlier by tarik himself along with his mother son and care florida chief executive director hasan shibley and i first asked tarik how he felt about his experience. well i was actually on the side of the street watching the protest and i heard soldiers come from behind me and a bunch of people were screaming sawed panicked and then i began to run the ali i was in a now and i began to really so. annoyed to go and i was panicked. and

there was a fence next to me when i jumped that fence to get like out of the way and i realized that they were coming after me and then i fell all over the fence and i went a little bit farther and that's when they slammed into the floor and began to beat me and i'm absolutely nothing could justify that kind of treatment is very telling as you is trying to justify brutally beating a child whose hands are restrained that's a lot about israel's policies right well i mean if the police what they did does not of course explain why you know target would have been beat and now the pictures in the immediate aftermath of that are truly disturbing tarka i want to ask you what happened after you were taken in did you receive any immediate medical attention. well i was. unconscious and then when i was unconscious they took me straight after the beating to jail and i was actually i will cope in

jail blindfolded instance zip tied and so i couldn't make any movements. and i went back into content. conscious again and it kept going on conscious because of how how much pain i was going through and then i remember i stayed in for six hours in the jail and then i went then they finally took me to the doctor for maybe two or three hours and then i came back to the jail the same night wow what point did they realize you were a u.s. citizen. i don't know which time that the realized but it didn't look like they cared because of how they reacted to to me in caring at all. and so high as a mother this must have been very difficult for you at that point you had already

lost one relative a young sixteen year old not too far in age from your son's how concerned were you in those early stages that your son could have been killed. i was very concerned i mean especially the fact like you said we were grieving i was grieving the home of mohammed a bouquet dear and then all of a sudden i hear this so it's like double trauma for me you know. we didn't get that time that we should have had to finish grieving grieving. and then all of a sudden i find out about my son and and it's like you know it was the most horrifying shocking moment of my life you know i thought he was dead you know until i actually saw him in court you know up in alive and speaking. it was a horrible horrible experience. you know we're still grieving today over. death

absolutely and our condolences to you for his death i as i understand it just hours after dark left to return to tampa your family's home in easter was also ransacked by police just before two of your relatives were arrested as far as you know what happened in that instance well. we believe it was an act of retaliation by the israeli police. we got onto the airplane and then when we got back to the u.s. as soon as we got back that's when we found out that they had gone in fact the houses the house that we were staying in first and then that's when they took all the males to jail. in that house and you know automatically our thoughts were you know it was an act of retaliation you know and has and they

started yes go ahead sorry. no i just wanted to say and then they went from one family house to the next you know continuing taking you know all the males in the households with no charges of course we've been staying to in touch with the families and. you know couple of family members have got now but a lot of them are still in and house and the other arrests which is getting more attention here in the u.s. is and that of nineteen year old mohammed al fayed there. is also a u.s. citizen he was born in baltimore however he is yet to be released from your perspective why has his release been much more difficult to secure than torics the reason his release is a much more difficult to secure is because of the lack of media pressure i think the reason we were able to get tariq out so quickly is because there was a video that exposed to the world the absolute brutal treatment tarik received at the hands of the israeli police and that was able to generate a lot of media pressure that really helped us meters in the u.s.

politicians take action to pressure israel to release quickly and unfortunately or you know we don't have that same sort of evidence available right now with. how much could there although we know he was mistreated we know he's being held wrongfully without any charges but because that video isn't there and that high level of media pressure isn't there you know there's really a difference moving a lot less fast and we didn't. and he said in response israel has denied an allegation completely that this family is being targeted despite the fact that so many people have been arrested so many are still detained what do you make of the argument that they make which is that this is all just a coincidence that you know this is a large family in east jerusalem and it's pure coincidence this is a family that happens to be protesting and getting into the trouble. you know the facts speak for themselves the state department has gone on record expressing its concern that it's very clear but that your government is taking retaliation against

the could your family it wasn't enough that israeli extremists murdered mohammed could bear and then that is where the police subsequently tied the hands of target there and brutally beat him but the night toric and his parents left israel the israeli police just ran into the homes where they were staying rounded up a lot of family members about forty fifty relatives of the people that they were staying with they ransacked the home and many of these people are still being held without charges you know if they had any just of them that there should be charges that should be transparency there should be a court process and right now that's completely lacking i think it's very clear the government is taking we tell you shit against them what's also very clear is that the israeli government is mistreating the family simply because they sure are different ethnic origin and their religion than that which the israeli government supports because they're palestinians because there are a because they're muslim that they're going through what they're going and i think the u.s. government needs to make it very clear to the israeli government that it cannot keep treating an entire people differently simply because they share a different race or religion and that israeli government cannot use u.s. funds to indefinitely detain you with them children and even beat them and hold

them without charges and due process i want to leave it with you i mean how does it feel knowing that you were released back here to the united states while many of your relatives who aren't u.s. citizens you still identify with of course as being palestinian are still being detained back at home while it makes me think and makes me think how they're feeling and i actually when i went to when i was. in prison in jerusalem. really like i couldn't believe what was happening to me and i can't i couldn't believe what was going to happen next and all now that i'm home and i'm safe. i still feel like i have i have my family members that are suffering over there and they're being kept in june with no charges as like it's like the they don't deserve to be in jail we certainly do wish the best to you and
