islamic state. a low for me in the team here at the r.t. news center in moscow is monday the nineteenth of june five pm here in the russian capital thanks for choosing us for your news update this hour first the breaking story we've been bringing you in the past couple of hours russia's defense ministry says it's halted cooperation with the u.s. military in syria the move comes in response to the downing of a syrian fighter jet by an american warplane near the i still held city of rocket our correspondent emily suit has the details. now one thing is when diplomats engage in a war of words but today's development shows that it's gone far beyond that with russia deciding to end the single most important agreement that the u.s. and russia signed since moscow was invited by the assad regime to join the fight in

syria now this agreement we're talking about here was signed back in october twenty fifth dean and what it does is established as a communication channel between u.s. and russia forces operating in the airspace over syria to prevent any sort of incidents as you can imagine this air space is very dense for so many different countries so many different groups involved in any sort of mistake and misinformation really can lead to unthinkable consequences and in this case of this syrian jet being shot down according to the russian military the u.s. has not informed russia off the decision to shoot down this syrian jet through the existing communication channel at the same time russian jets was also operating in the area and as a result of this incident russia has decided to halt all cooperation with the u.s. military in syria and this sort of military information blackout could potentially be a disaster waiting to happen here's why. any aircraft belonging to the u.s. led coalition detected in the skies west of the euphrates river where the russian

syria if you think about it really ever since the early one thousand nine hundred ninety s. have been used to its craft being able to patrol what they regard as enemy skies with impunity and they feel threatened but also that their allies on the ground are threatened so there is a risk that in fact they may try to assert themselves against any syrian or russian limitations on their activities over syria and that of course then could spiral out of control and we could be in a some in one thousand nine hundred situation. were the great powers don't really take seriously books threat of conflict until the really crossed the rubicon going over the u. red lines and i think is a very dangerous situation although some people in washington are saying are the russians will never stand up to us well maybe not but what if. so so is this do you really think this could be the the catastrophic straw on the camel's back there how significant is the shooting down of this jet this is a war zone and a war that has been going on for years there's been incidents all along the way how significant is this one that. well the difference here is that after all it's

the risk of another incident and then the risk of retaliation either to or for instance a bomb by a ground bombardment against pro-american forces and against american special forces who are in syria remember there are several hundred at least american troops and some british and french too in northern and in eastern syria. what do you make of the conflicting reports from both sides here the u.s. insists that these syrian planes bombing it's allied forces russia says it was targeting isolates. quite pivotal to get to the bottom of exactly what it was doing isn't it. here yet as we really exact nature of what was going on overseas could be confused by the fog of war it is possible that the pro-u.s. militia on the ground had occupied positions that previously isis's had done that the syrian plane was bombing places that were no longer controlled by isis we've seen this happen before in the north of syria with the turks and the syrians in risk in conflict with each other the other problem is that as i say the united states has been very unhappy about syrian army and syrian government militias
