5:01 pm
you for joining us for the weekly news roundup this sunday on r.t. international i'm kate partridge we start with some breaking news this hour syria says its army positions in the golan heights have once again come under fire from israel it's the second strike in the area in two days artie's middle east correspondent paula slayer has more. well the syrian army has issued a statement in which it has accused the israelis of targeting syrian army positions on the side of the golan heights now the syrian army is currently fighting the terrorist group. and they say that the israeli attacks are only hoping. they have been to such israeli attacks since saturday as for the israeli side the israeli air force has acknowledged conducting those strikes it says that it is in response to projectiles that landed on the israeli side of the golan heights of
5:02 pm
course the golan heights is disputed territory but the israeli prime minister benjamin netanyahu saying quite clearly at the start of the weekly cabinet meeting that they would be a price to pay even if such projectiles and and are not targeting israel but land on israeli territory by mistake. policy is clear we will not tolerate any spillover or trickle whatsoever nor the mortars nor rockets from any front we will strongly to any attack on our territory our citizens. now talking to some people on the ground here what is being expressed is the view that the syrian army needs to pay the price for whatever happens in the golan heights even if the syrian army is fighting terrorists israel still continues to hit their positions. or to discuss this further we can now cross live to forward u.s. diplomats jim gestures jim thank you very much for joining us this evening well syria says it's fighting against terrorists in the golan heights and errant missiles hit
5:03 pm
israel do you think the israeli response is acceptable. i think it's in my opinion no it is not it's one thing for the israelis to say that they will protect their border that's leaving aside the question of what the status of the golan is the bigger question is this is there is there something more behind this then just the israelis responding to what they have met is an errant lending of syrian missiles on their side of the border that there is a report today for example that drew sloan post saying in so many words that israel has been cooperating with anti-government groups in syria on the. syrian side of the border including groups affiliated with al-qaeda that this is a strategic orientation that israel has positioned itself in in syria parallel to that of the united states unfortunately and there may be more to it than than
5:04 pm
simply simply responding to a few missiles that landed on the wrong side of or. looking about why the picture that is right is largely stayed on the sidelines in the syrian civil war do you think these retaliate recycle suggest that that is about to change that that's the real question mark here is as good as the jerusalem post article pointed out the the anti-government forces in syria are on the road that the that the basque government is making great gains that there has concerned these terrorist forces supported by as we know saudi arabia qatar and these other countries with the silent backing of israel and of course the participation of the united states are in big trouble and for these really what that means is and they are quite clear about this that they don't want to see forces allied with iran on their border particularly hizbollah and i think that's the real concern that they're expressing through this action whether it will grow into something major i don't know well looking at the us i've recently stepped up its fight against the syrian armed
5:05 pm
forces do you think it's possible that israel could have made emboldened by that. i think so i think that obviously the israeli american policy of very close to this region and both of them are very opposed to iran and given that he had the arabian support for the syrian government and the presence of hizbollah this is something i'm sure the israelis are quite concerned about can they accept the defeat of the terrorist forces that are fighting against this in the syrian government i don't know if they can do that or if conversely some kind of assurances can be given from the syrian side that israel will not face a security threat from the golan once the terrorists are defeated in syria well as base as it sounds now i mean diplomatically that there are no diplomatic relations between the sea countries when do you think that that would suggest that military might is perhaps the only way to solve any conflict between them. i hope it is not the answer because that could lead to the prospect of a wider war we don't need
5:06 pm
a anti syria israel war to the mix of what's been destroying syria for the last six years i would hope in particular that the russians are position to talk to both sides as we know president. and yahoo group very good personal relate of course theory and work russia. something now to deconstruct used to say just one day we'll leave it there jim jefferies former u.s. diplomat thank you very much indeed for your time thank you thank you. well syria's also recently been hit by the u.s. on monday moscow said it was halting cooperation with washington over syria after the coalition shut down a syrian flight to plane the day before well the pentagon earlier claimed it to shut down the syrian jet in self-defense after it bombed the u.s. backed militants but damascus says it's plane was attacking islamic state where the syrian jet was down near the iso held city of raka which is under siege by u.s.
5:07 pm
backed local troops and it's not the first time the u.s. led coalition has targeted pro assad forces in the war zone last month in southern syria the coalition also bombed pro-government forces several times after accusing them of violating so-called the conflict zones auntie's and it's now it takes a closer look at the latest round. the u.s. shoots down a syrian plane over syria in self-defense the only actions that we have taken against pro regime forces in syria and they've been to specific incidents have been in self-defense let's imagine a random guy comes into your house with a gun and shoots your dog and then he's like it was just self-defense i wanted to make sure there was no violence going on here d. as coalition speaking of deescalation after this self defense move the situation couldn't be worse russia and now considers all us. led coalition planes in the area of potential targets and are tracking them all of this happened as both the u.s.
5:08 pm
and syrian government backed up by the russian air force were fighting isis in the stronghold of raka now washington and moscow have locked horns in syria again focus has shifted and isis is probably breathing a deep sigh of relief while watching syrian fighter jets crash in flames on the horizon good job superpowers you're not so super slick. well tensions flared even further on choose day after the u.s. led coalition shot down another syrian aircraft an unmanned drone the pentagon claims the arms drone had been advancing on u.s. backed forces in southern syria once again the coalition said the downing of the aircraft was motivated by self defense while i list warned that washington is playing at dangerous game. did the americans react to syrian threats as a source or were they trying to assert sovereignty over syria if you think about it really ever since the early one thousand nine hundred ninety s.
5:09 pm
have been used to it being able to patrol what they regard as enemy skies with impunity and they feel threatened and also the allies on the ground are threatened brygada are we going towards you know more suspension of cooperation i think that's what some people in the u.s. administration actually want so they don't meaning they don't want to have cooperation between the u.s. and russia maybe not necessarily trump him soft but i think you do have figures who are very anti russian in the administration i think we are heading towards a more suspension of cooperation and more hostility between moscow and washington which could mean some very bleak scenarios for the future. hundreds of people in london have been evacuated from their tower block homes amid fears of a repeat of the ground fell tower disaster more than thirty blanks have failed fire safety tests across the country where the grunfeld tower disaster britain's deadliest fire in over a century claimed at least seventy nine lives the fire was only put out more than
5:10 pm
twenty four hours later prime minister to resign may admitted to government haven't done enough to respond to the disaster but her apology didn't stop hundreds of protesters from across the u.k. demanding justice for the victims. the support on the ground for families in the initial hours was not good enough people were left without belongings without ribs over their heads without even basic information about what happened what they should do that was a failure of the state local and national to help people when they needed it most as prime minister i apologize for that failure and as prime minister i've taken responsibility for doing what we can to put things right but i think that it's really it's only. when they try engines it a little bit i miss my life when they. make choices but it. was
5:11 pm
. the key thing after this massacre that i could just by people and everyone's going to shout serious say you know this is mean justice and laws need to be trying and why is the house so getting away with this sort of. the fact. the area. was really treated like that what do you think to kill reason my should take all the blame for this we all introduce remote through all those people in the house of parliament the good of a good for part to play for us well victims of the grand felt blaze may have been exposed not only to smoke and fire but also to a highly toxic gas that's according to expert analysis of the tragedy hospital report said they were treating three people from cyanide poisoning one of the most dangerous forms an expert has claimed the insulation boards used on the tower produce a deadly gas when burned and the clogging which was highly flammable material used

on the outside of the building is also under scrutiny. well this week the u.k. also mount one year since it voted to the three european union though the actual divorce talk spending just got underway the referendum result caused a political earthquake the all to shocks of which is still being felt today. i will move a motion in the house of commons calling for a general election to be held on the eighth of june theresa may want to do strengthen her hand embrace the negotiations with european leaders she needed a mandate for her standing in the divorce from the e.u. breaks it corrects it for treason by breaks it means giving up access to the e.u. single market and customs union looking full control of u.k. borders and no compromise on the free movement of people but is stead of a mandate to reason got a hung parliament white criticism of her breaks that position no deal for britain
5:13 pm
is better than a deal no deal would be a very very bad out for now will britain needs to work out a new breakthrough plan which is not easy but the divided parliament the democratic unionist party which may hopes to form a majority with opposes a hard break sit well the u.k. position leaves more questions than answers some fear the negotiations which have already started will bring little progress through the wait for second breaks that referendum not likely even labor are resigned to this breakup labor accepts respects the result of the referendum it won't be off you know leaving. the conditions of the divorce agreements and now even more uncertain than ever and things you should go from the normal messy been mixed. well the process officially started when brussels received a letter from to reason may finally declaring the intentions to leave the block
5:14 pm
well many british citizens still strongly oppose the decision and some once again expressed their anger on friday artie's police boyko takes us through the twists and turns of britain's rocky road to the breakup. it was a very changed the course of history the forty eight percent who voted to stay were outraged although the others they were delighted to show me his resume. that there. needs to become a national bank holiday we will call it a. night of firearms may have been jumping the gun his so-called independence day is still a distant prospect the referendum result killed the political career of david cameron and allowed home secretary to resume aid to step up to the plate in the run up to the vote she had been a quiet remain but the desire to lead post brags that britain forced her
5:15 pm
to reconsider her position rex it means bricks and we're going to make a success of a year down the line that sounds like something from an alternate universe considering that the reason may hold an election in order to strengthen her hand in the braggs it talks but ended up refueling in the polls and losing her parliamentary majority her atrocious result meant that politically her weakened government limped into negotiations with brussels earlier this week and bear in mind these talks were never going to be a walk in the park. but it. can be concluded quickly. threats against russian. it's been issued by european politicians commission was trying to bully the british people arguments over
5:16 pm
whether the u.k. would pave a one hundred billion regs it bill guaranteeing the rights of he used citizens in the u.k. and who would get custody of gibraltar what we saw any issues but those aroused took a back seat when britain was hit by a wave of terror for terror attacks in the space of just three months to be precise and many britons held to reason may direct the responsible because she'd been head of the home office six years before becoming prime minister. and with all the security and political chaos few people even notice that earlier this week brings it negotiations officially kicked off but not in the way that london would have hoped the british government's already been accused of caving into brussels over the braggs its schedule and opinion polls now show that if the country got to vote
5:17 pm
again it would reject leaving you so just like two reason may the plan for braggs it went from strong and stable so weak and wildly within the space of just one yeah. the cia's chief has now accused russia of working to undermine american democracy for decades more details almost after the short break. in case you're new to the game this is how it works now the economy is built around corporation operations from washington to washington the media the media the. voters elected to run this country business equals. must it's not business as usual it's business like it's never been done.

colombia forty five kilometers east of meddling near the town of pay at least twenty five people are reported dead rescue efforts are said to be underway as it's breaking news story we'll bring you more details on this as soon as we get them. cia director mike compare claims russian meddling in the u.s. presidential elections was just a part of a decades long efforts to undermine american democracy russia has always denied any interference while pompei a statement comes in his first interview after taking up the post of cia director in january. i can't talk about the details of the intelligence but we have the intelligence committee has said that this election was meddled with by the russians in a way that is frankly not particular original they've been doing this for an awfully long time and we are decades into the russians trying to undermine american democracy i think a lot of actors tried to exercise influence in the in the election i don't know the
5:20 pm
specifics of what russia may or may not have done and what other nations may or may not have done i think the facts are clear in the public domain that the democratic national committee try it may well have rigged the primary for hillary and did their level best to tip the scales in the elections to bigger issue is the degree to which the obama administration seems likely to have tried to tip the hand heavily in the favor of installing hillary clinton as a successor to barack obama that's something that really needs to be investigated. now the final two great games of the twenty seventeen confederations cup have two sided the last two semifinalists chile and germany went through and will now face portugal and mexico in the last four round with more has neil harvey and stan collymore in sochi.
5:21 pm
well to sort of see the semifinal lineup is now complete let's cut to the chase is germany and it is chile who will complete the final four alongside me stan collymore you made some predictions earlier alongside nick come on come on let's let's just see how we did it was paul the octopus back in germany in two thousand and six was very good could have buried in germany as we expected when the first game you go through that was going to happen as of yesterday germany three cameroon one very good cameroon were in the first off apply very aggressive very youthful but the german quality came through kerry during by two years off annoying his first appearance of the conflict called first gold team of watch out for the straw in the next twelve months he will be in the germany squad. for the world cup when the germans come back here for two goals the first time a german high school two goals in the confederations cup and then of course it again chile against australia almost completely wrong to actually would have this
5:22 pm
fairly comfortably a very strong chile and saw it against an australian side which is very useful for this exchange maybe for the game and a really creditable draw from the australians let's just you know play some do cynically bear went from australia which was on the cards for the first forty five minutes so if i was a betting man and i'm not out of germany they still against chile following germany get to stay in sochi which is what they wanted to be pleased with that it's being chilly nowhere silly today baking hot and such and i think it's quite warm in moscow as well isn't it emily says our correspondent at the spartak arena it was an intense and exciting game and the results are in one one draw between chile an australia and this means chile we're now at dance to the semifinals and just like in sochi moscow been blessed with great weather today and here despite tax t.d.m. the atmosphere really couldn't be any better right before the game started in the entrances. also the engines the stadium behind me it was literally jam packed with fans from both teams out there is music playing and drum beats are playing also and
5:23 pm
fans are just waving the flags and cheering on both teams and as far as when the sand there is as many as two thousand fans who flew all the way from chile right here in russia to be a part of the twenty seven thousand confederations cup so they can cheer on their national team and looks like their predictions came true before the game started they told me they think chile would go straight to the semifinals no doubt here's what they told me. oh yes. yes. we are both for now the two the national team we have a very nice team. going to win and let's apply it to the semifinals that's how. i know she's in. so the semifinal matches will take place on the twenty eighth and twenty ninth in sochi in cars on and it will be portugal against chile and germany against mexico and for sure here north sea will be keeping a close eye on those matches ok let's bring in now mon both of these former australia

moscow which is absolutely mobbed the city the culture the architecture everything that bad is just first class but the same page was there for nearly a week and that was absolutely outstanding as well and the main concern is that obviously people are asking me about it on the security and security second set out it's absolutely plus the food has been fantastic the people have been very very helpful and so many people are now in a strain now dying to tommy for the world cup there's only one thing that i think is wrong is that the taxi drivers draw too fast. up next on our team international we'll continue our look inside north korea and if you're watching us a new k. or island it's news think. what politicians do you should. put themselves on the line they get accepted or
