walk back a story published late last week after attempting to link a member of trump's inner circle to russian bankers and allege the senate intelligence committee was in on the investigation on monday c.n.n. released a statement reading in the aftermath of the retraction of a story published on c.n.n. dot com c.n.n. has accepted the resignation of the employees involved in the story's publication so the question is who took the fall or handy and the resignations were investigative reporter thomas frank the editor of the investigative unit who worked for eric lichtblau and unit leader lex haris but as our correspondent on your parm hole explains the network had barely four covered from the drama before another potentially explosive scandal hit the airwaves right wing political activist and founder of project a very toss james o'keefe has taken a break from his traditional targets like planned parenthood and set its sights on c.n.n. on monday o'keefe dropped his latest report american proverb to c.n.n.

room and frankly everybody across the country to take a look at it i think if it is accurate i think it's a disgrace to all of media to all of journalism i think that we have gone to a place where. if the media can't be trusted to report the news then that's a dangerous place for america and i think if that is the place the certain outlets are going particularly. for the purpose of spiking ratings and if that's coming directly from the top i think that's even more scary and certainly more disgraceful we've been going on this russia trump hoax for the better part of a year now with no evidence of anything things like the success at the v.a. barely get covered they may get covered for an hour at a time but this story gets covered day in day out and i think america is frankly looking for something better they're looking for something more and i think they

that it is familiar with the statement but it is not aware of its basis a criminal spokesperson say that they categorically disagree with the wording another attack stressing that damascus cannot be held liable for the last attack because despite all of russia's demands an unbiased international investigation has still not been carried out moscow also says that it considers any weights to be legitimate need to ship off syria and acceptable. to say we consider such threats to the legitimate government of the syrian arab republic unacceptable but at the same time it's important to point out that we also consider unacceptable the use of chemical weapons the potential danger repeated provocation with chemical weapons in syria still exists while the white house a statement on the threat of a new chemical attack is interesting indeed let's first look at the wording they statement says that they have detected potential preparations that would likely

result in mass civilian casualties particularly innocent children now that's quite emotive language obviously used to garner support for such a statement the statement also talks about a potential preparations but what exactly does this mean there are no details given other than that it is similar or seemingly similar to what the u.s. detected before the last chemical attack back in april. the statement also says any chemical attack in syria in the immediate future will be blamed on this side and his allies an obvious no investigation no two posts is just punishment now as far as the damascus government goes they've denied to the white house and occasions that they may be preparing for a new chemical attack they insist again that they've never used such arms at the same time we're hearing from several state department officials who are typically involved in coordinating such announcements and they say that they were called complete or gone by the warning which didn't appear to be discussed in advance with any other kind of national security agencies and then the united kingdom is weighing in it says that it will back u.s.

action against syria despite seeing no evidence of this alleged attack even being prepared i want to leave you with no doubt we think it's absolutely right if we turn to prevent the use of chemical weapons and we will fully support any u.s. action and for more on the white house's statement regarding a potential chemical weapons attack by the assad regime on syrian rebels i'm joined by philip giraldi former cia officer and mark crispin miller a professor of media studies at n.y.u. gentlemen thank you so much for joining us this evening and so as you know on monday night the white house released a statement saying that the u.s. have identified preparations for another chemical weapons attack by the assad regime that would result in the mass murder of civilians including innocent children so mark what is your reaction to the media's coverage of this claim that the syrian regime would pay a heavy price for a possible chemical weapons attack on its people. well what's what's really alarming about this whole episode is the fact that the press although you know they

have been foregrounded they have been front page this story in the new york times ran and i think on page eighty nine today they have still persisted in using the same loaded language of the announcement itself which is to say another chemical attack that assad is suspected of preparing for another chemical attack well the fact is that that language is on earned because there's really no conclusive evidence of any prior chemical attack i think that one of the scariest things about this moment is the fact that a major exposé by one of this nation's most eminent investigative journalist seymour hersh an exposé demonstrating conclusively that this a so-called chemical attack in april and it lit province was not a chemical attack this article couldn't find

a single outlet to publish it that is hersh could not find a single american outlet to publish it he couldn't find a british outlet to publish it it has finally appeared in developed the german newspaper that tells us something that there is a certain propaganda narrative about assad's brutality his use of chemical weapons against innocent people etc and there's a tremendous effort underway a successful effort to protect that propaganda narrative from any contradiction and that's what we're seeing now i think all too many people in the united states are ready to believe that assad has in fact attacked his people chemically and may well be preparing to do it once again and you're right not everybody believes that it's an excellent point there and philip what can you say to u.n. ambassador nikki haley's comments that any further attacks done to the people of syria will be blamed on assad and also russia and iran who. to support him killing his own people as they put it well when i read this this morning i was completely

shocked by it the fact is that iran and russia are in syria at the invitation of the legitimate syrian government the united states is not and the united states has been carrying out acts of war against the syrian government and against the syrian government's allies and now is expanding this saying that we suspect you might be interested in staging a chemical attack and we warn you that there will be heavy consequences the implication being a military attack from the united states and then we're also tying iran and russia in with it saying we will also hold you responsible i mean this is astonishing stuff normally in the diplomatic world if you were. you would speak quietly to the russians who would speak quietly to the syrians but that's not the case here this is like an invitation to world war three i've never seen anything quite like it interesting and defense secretary james mad as he told

reporters in germany that the u.s. refuses to. that they are refusing right now to. say that he has been trying to end this through diplomacy basically he's saying that he doesn't want to drive a fight that he's trying to do this diplomatic way and he's not threatening the use of force but again he didn't comment on the statement at the white house made on monday so what is your take on that philip. well my take on it is that he's lying i mean there's no diplomacy playing out here this is a there's a consensus within this administration that iran is the number one enemy after we dispose of syria and russia also has to be taught a lesson i mean there's this is this kind of mindless belligerency that's coming out of the administration is is just totally unacceptable and to disguise us as

diplomacy is just just a lot and mark as you know the major point for the u.s. military operations to be in syria is to defeat isis and its two major strongholds mosul any iraq and iraq and syria so the fact that mattis is saying that the u.s. is also willing to attack at the assad regime carries out a major chemical weapons attack is not going off course mark. well not not it's not going off the real course i mean it seems to me i'm not the only one in the world who thinks that are ostensibly mission of you know wiping out isis is is just a charade i mean it's a fig leaf i mean assad has been in america's crosshairs for a very long time saudi arabia is israel's and cetera. that accounts for the mind boggling incoherence of the whole american syria policy that we're supposedly there to wipe out isis but we're also fighting the government that's trying to wipe out isis you know i mean again i have to return to the really alarming failure of

the american press to deal properly with all this and i wish i could take more pleasure as some of your earlier guests who are from this in no who over c.n.n. retracting that story i mean maybe the russia gate story is dead now because of this scandal but i think the damage has been done i mean sixty nine percent of the american people believe that russia you know hacked the election just as on the eve of the invasion of iraq you know in two thousand and three roughly the same number of americans actually believe that saddam hussein had something to do with nine eleven and that he had weapons of mass destruction i mean the media is not just in the entertainment business corporate media is in the propaganda business and the propaganda against syria the propaganda against putin and russia have been all too successful and i think that this is a very dangerous situation and philip given your expertise in counterterrorism do

ally the united arab emirates an associated press investigation claims abuse and torture are routine in this network of prisons where hundreds are detained in the hunt for al qaeda fighters republican senator john mccain and democratic senator jack reed sent a letter to madness asking he reviewed the report to find out what if anything u.s. forces knew about the alleged torture artie's someone is following the case and so throw in one of the allegations here and what is the associated press reporting and how did they even find out this information will the associated press interview to ten former detainees family members of these prisoners civil rights attorneys and also a dozen you many military and government officials its investigation found that there is this network of secret prisons at least eighteen different lockups that are run by the united arab emirates and the many forces that it created according to the testimonies of these former detainees this is some of the techniques of torture which they were exposed to there's one called the grail where a victim's tied to

a spit like a roast and spun furiously within a circle of fire one detainees said he was spun so fast he vomited blood also being being with wires held in shipping containers smeared with feces blindfolded and shackled for weeks also sexually assaulted another detainees said quote we could hear the screams the entire place is gripped by fear almost everyone is sick the rest are near death anyone who complains heads directly to the torture chamber and most of these detainees did speak on the condition of being anonymous because they're afraid of getting arrested again apparently they told the associated press that when they were released from these torture prisons they were made to sign a piece of paper saying they would not speak publicly about it well and so we understand that the u.a.e. runs these prisons so how is the u.s. involved. well first off the united arab emirates is one of the united states' closest allies when it comes to fighting terrorism and apparently torture is being

taken place where the u.a.e. is interrogating these suspects trying to find out if they are al qaeda fighters according to the associated press american defense officials confirm that u.s. forces have in fact gone into these prisons and interrogated some of these detainees in yemen but they deny any knowledge or participation in any human rights abuses now according to this yossi to press it's clear that the american forces apparently took no part in the torture that they were never present when this torture was happening but this american connection alone to this network of secret prisons raises concerns of international law violations because even obtaining intelligence that other parties are able to extract because of torture is a violation in itself very interesting and so we know america's own checkered past with torturing is interesting in itself how does that play a role here well what we're looking at here this network of secret prisons a kind of mimics what we saw with the network of cia black sites that the cia

created to be able to interrogate and torture terrorism suspects post nine eleven now reportedly that network of black science was disbanded by the obama administration in two thousand and nine this network that the associated press identified in yemen was started during the obama administration and still continues to this day now you have lawmakers coming forward asking the trumpet ministration to take this investigation seriously look into the allegations noting that even if americans of course were not present during this they are still complicit if that information is being used senator john mccain which you mentioned earlier being a part of this writing secretary jim mattis he says that this hurts our own national security he called the reports by the associated press deeply disturbing mccain himself a torture victim of course he was tortured for a number of years as a prisoner of war during vietnam he. when a leader in congress coming out about torture and being against torture and we can look at some of our own history and see the senate intelligence committee report on

sniffed and in ukraine we had. airport as well as ukrainian government computers coming under attack now with rosneft which is right behind me the company's servers came under a massive onslaught but were able to revert to reserve systems keeping the oil extraction and other production services online and you see the way this. virus ransomware works as it locks the computer and ben asked for a three hundred to five hundred dollar ransom in order for the computer to be accessible again quite a pesky virus and you know to understand the magnitude of this thing just a little bit over a month ago over ninety nine countries seventy five thousand machines were affected by the same type of them around somewhere virus called want to cry you know major hospitals in america and europe couldn't use their computers businesses went down you know causing a brief have

a call across but the funny thing is about that about that particular hacking attack was that russia happened to be the main target taking in most attempts and most attacks some of which were successful penetrating a megaphone on a major russian telecom provider and disturbing its services for over twenty four hours and now back to this recent attack that happened today the kaspersky lab experts were able to tell us that. this malware has spread pretty much all over the planet at this point in time but it's very hard to predict when unwell and where it might strike again this is all we know so far and we will be keeping you updated as we know more. boyer's for michigan's top medical chief push to separate her case from the other defendants at a hearing today they say dr eaton wells could lose her medical license if convicted of felony misconduct five officials including michigan health and human services
