the world according to jesse. welcome to my world come along for the ride. coming up on our team america the c.n.n. rush reporting fall out continues as the network accept the resignation of through reporters involved with the retracted trump russia story. the white house warns against another chemical attack in syria threatening the assad regime will pay a heavy price. and a huge cyber attack hits companies across the globe that story and more coming up right now. it's tuesday june twenty seventh five pm in washington d.c. i'm natasha suites and you're watching r.t. america we begin today as c.n.n. accepts the resignation of three reporters this after the network was forced to
5:01 pm
walk back a story published late last week after attempting to link a member of trump's inner circle to russian bankers and allege the senate intelligence committee was in on the investigation on monday c.n.n. released a statement reading in the aftermath of the retraction of a story published on c.n.n. dot com c.n.n. has accepted the resignation of the employees involved in the story's publication so the question is who took the fall or handy and the resignations were investigative reporter thomas frank the editor of the investigative unit who worked for eric lichtblau and unit leader lex haris but as our correspondent on your parm hole explains the network had barely four covered from the drama before another potentially explosive scandal hit the airwaves right wing political activist and founder of project a very toss james o'keefe has taken a break from his traditional targets like planned parenthood and set its sights on c.n.n. on monday o'keefe dropped his latest report american proverb to c.n.n.

everybody can agree with clipboards. but we're done with the let's get back story. our tea cannot independently verify the video's authenticity but if o'keefe is representing it accurately you just heard a c.n.n. producer admit to keep pieces of information that c.n.n. is covering russia gate for ratings and of the story is currently quote mostly b.s. donna field even suggests the president could be correct in his characterization of the media's approach to the story as a witch hunt and fact at courting to the harvard kennedy school a report published this year ninety three percent of stories concerning trump run by c.n.n. or negative and it's served them well in terms of ratings as of this may c.n.n. had seen a twenty six percent rise in the ratings since the same time last year making it the second fastest increasing audience behind and with n.b.c.'s viewership which
5:04 pm
increased one hundred five percent as variety points out c.n.n. narrowed the gap with fall. news to its third smallest since october two thousand and eight in a total day and second smallest since january two thousand and nine in prime time in the key demo but the battle for most view doesn't necessarily translate into the most trusted name in news considering a rasmussen poll released earlier this month found only thirty three percent of c.n.n. viewers trust the political news they get on the channel making it in fact the least trusted of the three mainstream major networks don't tell that to c.e.o. jeff zucker though who as recently as june claimed c.n.n. is trusted now more than ever despite this latest fiasco is reportedly trying to keep morale high at the company a c.n.n. source told the buzz feed news zucker rallied staffers on
5:05 pm
a conference call tuesday morning telling close staffers to keep fighting the good fight and that the impassioned response only demonstrated c.n.n. is growing influence the report goes on to say however quote still c.n.n. sources describe a glum environment in the wake of resignations as staffers watched conservative commentators like fox news's sean hannity revel in cnn's pain hannity called for zucker's resignation this week neither john nor c.n.n. has yet to comment on this latest project a very toss report meaning that the network so used to demanding transparency itself is for now still clouded by uncertainty in washington on your part in pill r t meanwhile white house press secretary how could be sanders said that if the c.n.n. video is up then tick it's a real disgrace to all the american people. i would encourage everybody in this
5:06 pm
room and frankly everybody across the country to take a look at it i think if it is accurate i think it's a disgrace to all of media to all of journalism i think that we have gone to a place where. if the media can't be trusted to report the news then that's a dangerous place for america and i think if that is the place the certain outlets are going particularly. for the purpose of spiking ratings and if that's coming directly from the top i think that's even more scary and certainly more disgraceful we've been going on this russia trump hoax for the better part of a year now with no evidence of anything things like the success at the v.a. barely get covered they may get covered for an hour at a time but this story gets covered day in day out and i think america is frankly looking for something better they're looking for something more and i think they
5:07 pm
deserve something better from our news media for more on the evolving c.n.n. russia saga i was joined earlier by a legal and media analyst lionel a line of media getting his take on the new internal restrictions at c.n.n. and whether he thought this new project video which changed the culture at c.n.n. the world right now in journalism is sitting shivah as to what is happening not just to c.n.n. this project this is there's a prude or film this is the smoking gun that what they're going to do was are going to say look this guy's not important he doesn't speak on behalf of zucker he's just maybe a near do well or malcolm dead now thing to worry about the good news for c.n.n. i would tell them don't worry number one nobody shocked by this this is like a nine hundred eighty nine when vince mcmahon said wrestling's fake wasn't exactly film with a laugh. we've already known this but what it goes to show you was compound did
5:08 pm
after this week's incredible may have called up the contrition the expiation of the go the the terrible scaramucci transgression both back to back it's finally telling a lot of people what they've already known that c.n.n. is in the entertainment business they're in the ratings business and what ever it is whatever it takes whether it's contrived stories of russia they'll do it there's a subtext to this decision also the death of the russian story the russian hacking story is officially gone because recently chuck schumer and others were communicating among the ranks of the d.n.c. to lay off this story the other offshoot of this is what are people like rachel maddow going to do whose entire show is based upon this russian story so the
5:09 pm
repercussions of this are most to fold yes the timing i as you said is certainly interesting and so in the c.n.n. article that was retracted there was an unnamed source and there are counts that the article with associated with one of senator elizabeth warren staffers who was apparently egged on by the staff at senator harris so while we will wait for orenstein to respond what would this mean for the democratic party if indeed senator warren steam was involved in this. that's the least of their problems the problem that the democratic party has right now the d.n.c. is that they have an incoherent message and a lot of this was also done as this post-hoc rationalization to explain to the world and justify why hillary clinton was a billion dollar war chest blew the election and frankly lost despite the fact that she had no no i can't they just pick up this is a multiplicity of problems that's fine. he came to i had to look what they're going
5:10 pm
to tell you right now is full steam ahead they're not going to mention this but here is the chance right now for alternative media and foreign media hankton ted to say we're going to pick up the the gauntlet we're going to run with this because it goes to show you what we have known for the longest time i say we not you c.n.n. is dad i don't know how to tell you this anymore it's all over with goodbye i mean this is a few taps you bring up an interesting point because the new democratic representative tim ryan of ohio and he made an interesting point similar to what you just made that people in his state aren't talking about russia they're talking about how they're going to make their mortgage payments and things like that and he said that you know they really need to do more than simply disagree with donald trump twelve elections so i mean if people aren't interested in hearing about russia why is c.n.n. so obsessed with it and is it their mirror hate for trump just hoping to you know that this investigation will put him in a negative light the talk show if jeff zucker looked at the meters and saw the

numbers going up by showing twenty four seven of a duck playing the piano you'll be safe i've got playing the piano it has nothing to do with journalism this is a this is a this is that this this organization is on its death bed i mean seriously they're going to call a cold pretty soon their ratings were awful this is his last chance right now it's door guy it's all about money it's about entertainment that's it but this is the denouement of the valedictory it's all over ad watch the other groups say what are we don't doubt this was our story what do you mean there's no russian story that's our act is a go it's like being. a sex having an act that all of a sudden is deemed irrelevant which is just as bad and we are at a time thank you so much as always lanolin media you appreciate hearing. well president trump has reacted to the latest news regarding c.n.n.
5:12 pm
on twitter this is something he's been known to do ever since his election campaign kicked off directing his distaste for the mainstream media particularly at c.n.n. . he takes a look at the two interest relationship between the president and the mainstream media trumps war with the mainstream media has been going on firmly since his election campaign but intensified after he took office but simply against the c.n.n. the most trusted name in news was brutally set down twice in trump's first two major news conferences the inauguration. because of the attack of fake news and attacking our network i just want to ask you sir i'm changing from say news now doesn't that under a very good aren't you all throughout his young presidency trumps views on major news networks as often spilled out on to twitter not just fake news what he called them the enemy of the american people that's what he said with every seventeen the

fake news media failing new york times n.b.c. news a.b.c. c.b.s. c.n.n. is not my enemy it's the enemy of the american people several days later he tweeted fake news media knowingly doesn't tell the truth a great danger to our country the fading new york times has become a joke likewise c.n.n. sad in may there was a more the fake news media works hard disparaging and demeaning my use of social media because they don't want america to hear the real story and even today trump ranted even more the c.n.n. fiasco with the russia story tweeting that fake news c.n.n. is looking at big management changes now they got caught falsely pushing their phony russian stories ratings way down and as well as suggesting it wasn't only c.n.n. deemed fake news by the president but many other outlets the network has been standing firm signified by the pin tweet of c.n.n.'s white house reporter jim acosta but was still forced to terminate comedian kathy griffin's employment after her attempt at . art the controversial social media posts of her standing holding

a replica of trump's decapitated head and it caused a massive war and now three relatively high profile departures signs of tougher editorial control on russia stories and damaging tapes on the network's dealings you would think that lessons have been learned but think again considering the man who knows better than anyone how to lose the ball has just been hired by the c.n.n. election reporting from washington d.c. president donald trump will disregard the recent senate bill imposing new sanctions on russia the white house says the bill violates the revenue klotz that's according to white house press secretary sean spicer is constitutional requirement calls for all bills directed at raising revenue through legislation to originate in the house of representatives by a certain night the legitimacy of the sanctions bill yesterday during a news conference the senate parliamentarian. didn't follow proper procedure so i mean there is no new bill at this time the house is looking at taking up

the government look everyone in the world should experience flu and you'll get it on the all the olympic look according to jesselyn world come along for the. i. fear with claimed on monday the syrian government is allegedly preparing a chemical attack on rebels washington has threatened to use force if the chemical weapons are used the united states has identified potential preparations for another chemical weapons attack by the assad regime the united states is in syria to eliminate the slum extent of iraq and syria if however mr assad conducts another mass murder attack using chemical weapons he and his military will pay a heavy price r t is policy clear has the details the kremlin has responded saying
5:18 pm
that it is familiar with the statement but it is not aware of its basis a criminal spokesperson say that they categorically disagree with the wording another attack stressing that damascus cannot be held liable for the last attack because despite all of russia's demands an unbiased international investigation has still not been carried out moscow also says that it considers any weights to be legitimate need to ship off syria and acceptable. to say we consider such threats to the legitimate government of the syrian arab republic unacceptable but at the same time it's important to point out that we also consider unacceptable the use of chemical weapons the potential danger repeated provocation with chemical weapons in syria still exists while the white house a statement on the threat of a new chemical attack is interesting indeed let's first look at the wording they statement says that they have detected potential preparations that would likely
5:19 pm
result in mass civilian casualties particularly innocent children now that's quite emotive language obviously used to garner support for such a statement the statement also talks about a potential preparations but what exactly does this mean there are no details given other than that it is similar or seemingly similar to what the u.s. detected before the last chemical attack back in april. the statement also says any chemical attack in syria in the immediate future will be blamed on this side and his allies an obvious no investigation no two posts is just punishment now as far as the damascus government goes they've denied to the white house and occasions that they may be preparing for a new chemical attack they insist again that they've never used such arms at the same time we're hearing from several state department officials who are typically involved in coordinating such announcements and they say that they were called complete or gone by the warning which didn't appear to be discussed in advance with any other kind of national security agencies and then the united kingdom is weighing in it says that it will back u.s.
5:20 pm
action against syria despite seeing no evidence of this alleged attack even being prepared i want to leave you with no doubt we think it's absolutely right if we turn to prevent the use of chemical weapons and we will fully support any u.s. action and for more on the white house's statement regarding a potential chemical weapons attack by the assad regime on syrian rebels i'm joined by philip giraldi former cia officer and mark crispin miller a professor of media studies at n.y.u. gentlemen thank you so much for joining us this evening and so as you know on monday night the white house released a statement saying that the u.s. have identified preparations for another chemical weapons attack by the assad regime that would result in the mass murder of civilians including innocent children so mark what is your reaction to the media's coverage of this claim that the syrian regime would pay a heavy price for a possible chemical weapons attack on its people. well what's what's really alarming about this whole episode is the fact that the press although you know they
5:21 pm
have been foregrounded they have been front page this story in the new york times ran and i think on page eighty nine today they have still persisted in using the same loaded language of the announcement itself which is to say another chemical attack that assad is suspected of preparing for another chemical attack well the fact is that that language is on earned because there's really no conclusive evidence of any prior chemical attack i think that one of the scariest things about this moment is the fact that a major exposé by one of this nation's most eminent investigative journalist seymour hersh an exposé demonstrating conclusively that this a so-called chemical attack in april and it lit province was not a chemical attack this article couldn't find
5:22 pm
a single outlet to publish it that is hersh could not find a single american outlet to publish it he couldn't find a british outlet to publish it it has finally appeared in developed the german newspaper that tells us something that there is a certain propaganda narrative about assad's brutality his use of chemical weapons against innocent people etc and there's a tremendous effort underway a successful effort to protect that propaganda narrative from any contradiction and that's what we're seeing now i think all too many people in the united states are ready to believe that assad has in fact attacked his people chemically and may well be preparing to do it once again and you're right not everybody believes that it's an excellent point there and philip what can you say to u.n. ambassador nikki haley's comments that any further attacks done to the people of syria will be blamed on assad and also russia and iran who. to support him killing his own people as they put it well when i read this this morning i was completely
5:23 pm
shocked by it the fact is that iran and russia are in syria at the invitation of the legitimate syrian government the united states is not and the united states has been carrying out acts of war against the syrian government and against the syrian government's allies and now is expanding this saying that we suspect you might be interested in staging a chemical attack and we warn you that there will be heavy consequences the implication being a military attack from the united states and then we're also tying iran and russia in with it saying we will also hold you responsible i mean this is astonishing stuff normally in the diplomatic world if you were. you would speak quietly to the russians who would speak quietly to the syrians but that's not the case here this is like an invitation to world war three i've never seen anything quite like it interesting and defense secretary james mad as he told
5:24 pm
reporters in germany that the u.s. refuses to. that they are refusing right now to. say that he has been trying to end this through diplomacy basically he's saying that he doesn't want to drive a fight that he's trying to do this diplomatic way and he's not threatening the use of force but again he didn't comment on the statement at the white house made on monday so what is your take on that philip. well my take on it is that he's lying i mean there's no diplomacy playing out here this is a there's a consensus within this administration that iran is the number one enemy after we dispose of syria and russia also has to be taught a lesson i mean there's this is this kind of mindless belligerency that's coming out of the administration is is just totally unacceptable and to disguise us as
5:25 pm
diplomacy is just just a lot and mark as you know the major point for the u.s. military operations to be in syria is to defeat isis and its two major strongholds mosul any iraq and iraq and syria so the fact that mattis is saying that the u.s. is also willing to attack at the assad regime carries out a major chemical weapons attack is not going off course mark. well not not it's not going off the real course i mean it seems to me i'm not the only one in the world who thinks that are ostensibly mission of you know wiping out isis is is just a charade i mean it's a fig leaf i mean assad has been in america's crosshairs for a very long time saudi arabia is israel's and cetera. that accounts for the mind boggling incoherence of the whole american syria policy that we're supposedly there to wipe out isis but we're also fighting the government that's trying to wipe out isis you know i mean again i have to return to the really alarming failure of
5:26 pm
the american press to deal properly with all this and i wish i could take more pleasure as some of your earlier guests who are from this in no who over c.n.n. retracting that story i mean maybe the russia gate story is dead now because of this scandal but i think the damage has been done i mean sixty nine percent of the american people believe that russia you know hacked the election just as on the eve of the invasion of iraq you know in two thousand and three roughly the same number of americans actually believe that saddam hussein had something to do with nine eleven and that he had weapons of mass destruction i mean the media is not just in the entertainment business corporate media is in the propaganda business and the propaganda against syria the propaganda against putin and russia have been all too successful and i think that this is a very dangerous situation and philip given your expertise in counterterrorism do
5:27 pm
you think targeting and removing a thousand will lead to more terrorism in the region and perhaps in the west oh absolutely this is a situation is very analogous to what happened in iraq and indeed what happened in afghanistan you create a power vacuum and when you do that somebody is going to fill it. and the ones who are going to fill it are the groups that are most organized and have the most resources and are ready to do it so we would see if not isis if not al qaeda then another group very similar to them filling the vacuum in syria and it would be a greater threat to the west and currently exists and so we're only making the situation worse. all right thank you so much gentleman philip giraldi mark preston miller we really appreciate you joining us this evening. and lawmakers are demanding defense secretary jim maddis look into allegations of torture and yemen's secret prison network run by u.s.
5:28 pm
ally the united arab emirates an associated press investigation claims abuse and torture are routine in this network of prisons where hundreds are detained in the hunt for al qaeda fighters republican senator john mccain and democratic senator jack reed sent a letter to madness asking he reviewed the report to find out what if anything u.s. forces knew about the alleged torture artie's someone is following the case and so throw in one of the allegations here and what is the associated press reporting and how did they even find out this information will the associated press interview to ten former detainees family members of these prisoners civil rights attorneys and also a dozen you many military and government officials its investigation found that there is this network of secret prisons at least eighteen different lockups that are run by the united arab emirates and the many forces that it created according to the testimonies of these former detainees this is some of the techniques of torture which they were exposed to there's one called the grail where a victim's tied to
5:29 pm
a spit like a roast and spun furiously within a circle of fire one detainees said he was spun so fast he vomited blood also being being with wires held in shipping containers smeared with feces blindfolded and shackled for weeks also sexually assaulted another detainees said quote we could hear the screams the entire place is gripped by fear almost everyone is sick the rest are near death anyone who complains heads directly to the torture chamber and most of these detainees did speak on the condition of being anonymous because they're afraid of getting arrested again apparently they told the associated press that when they were released from these torture prisons they were made to sign a piece of paper saying they would not speak publicly about it well and so we understand that the u.a.e. runs these prisons so how is the u.s. involved. well first off the united arab emirates is one of the united states' closest allies when it comes to fighting terrorism and apparently torture is being
5:30 pm
taken place where the u.a.e. is interrogating these suspects trying to find out if they are al qaeda fighters according to the associated press american defense officials confirm that u.s. forces have in fact gone into these prisons and interrogated some of these detainees in yemen but they deny any knowledge or participation in any human rights abuses now according to this yossi to press it's clear that the american forces apparently took no part in the torture that they were never present when this torture was happening but this american connection alone to this network of secret prisons raises concerns of international law violations because even obtaining intelligence that other parties are able to extract because of torture is a violation in itself very interesting and so we know america's own checkered past with torturing is interesting in itself how does that play a role here well what we're looking at here this network of secret prisons a kind of mimics what we saw with the network of cia black sites that the cia
5:31 pm
created to be able to interrogate and torture terrorism suspects post nine eleven now reportedly that network of black science was disbanded by the obama administration in two thousand and nine this network that the associated press identified in yemen was started during the obama administration and still continues to this day now you have lawmakers coming forward asking the trumpet ministration to take this investigation seriously look into the allegations noting that even if americans of course were not present during this they are still complicit if that information is being used senator john mccain which you mentioned earlier being a part of this writing secretary jim mattis he says that this hurts our own national security he called the reports by the associated press deeply disturbing mccain himself a torture victim of course he was tortured for a number of years as a prisoner of war during vietnam he. when a leader in congress coming out about torture and being against torture and we can look at some of our own history and see the senate intelligence committee report on
5:32 pm
torture there was that was out post nine eleven post cia black sites saying that americans do not receive any actionable intelligence from torturing terrorism suspects so a lot to think about as we look for the defense department now to take a look at what was really great reporting by the associated press to get this out into the open variance i thank you so much that's our tease simone del rosario and coming up on r t a major cyber attack has hit at least ten different countries and got that story coming up next and. i think the average viewer just after watching a couple segments understands that we're telling stories there are critics can't tell you know why because their advertisers won't let. you know in order to create change after the honest you have to tell the truth parties able to do that every

on this summer the program will be rolled out on delta flights taking off internationally out of j.f.k. in new york now federal authorities already collected biometric information and data from foreign travelers entering and exiting the united states but this is the first time that we are seeing these procedures being implemented on american citizens natasha intrastate and so has there been any kind of public oversight of these programs yet. there has not been any public oversight the american public has yet to weigh in on this and in fact congress has not authorized it either congress has only authorized biometric exit bills for foreign nationals rather than american citizens so that's something that's very interesting to see here and the goal is to eventually roll this out on a mandatory bases across the entire united states depending on how well this program goes now airlines and d.h. say that they think this will make traveling much faster and more efficient but

these machines are not perfect and they are subject to error in fact the algorithms that these machines rely on have been shown in previous studies to fail and not do well when dealing with people who are african-americans or small children and even women in comparison to how they take data from white adult males so that's something to consider here as well and of course the electronic frontier foundation says that facial recognition systems are a very unique form of surveillance and people should be very worried about how this data will be stored and used in the future as well natasha great information thank you so much for status on tips from los angeles. qatar's foreign minister is meeting with the u.s. secretary of state later on tuesday as part of efforts to resolve the diplomatic crisis on the arabian peninsula qatar is currently facing a blockade following accusations from saudi arabia and number of other arab states that it's backing and financing terrorism well they have given
