it's thursday july sixth five pm in washington d.c. i'm ashley banks and you're watching our team erica we begin today in hamburg germany where protesters are seen kalash in with police ahead of the g. twenty summit protesters were seen throwing bottles and firecrackers at officers who then began using water cannons and tear gas to disperse and calm the crowd i spoke with our team's peter oliver who is there on the ground in hamburg where you join me right now is demonstrators are moving through the city but they have been some violent scenes that still today a few hours ago we're coming up on well just fifteen minutes past ten in the evening here in hamburg for anybody of views that know the city we're just coming from. the major nightlife sports here in in the german northern german city we have seen violent scenes they started on the embankment of the river with. tear gas as well as wall to kind of was used by the police know what i was been hearing from

the old analysis of these demonstrate. throughout the day that one of the biggest concerns was due to the regulations that have been placed on them by the police for this march or rather the lack of rules that had been placed on them that they presumed that that would mean that they were allowed to take the marching route that they wanted to take however what it seems it meant was the police had no intention of letting them march they cattle station water cannon around the perimeters of where they were and i really created a tinder box with bottles being thrown at police and police responding with with force in turn that then resulted in sporadic incidents is all around the city really wasn't under control by the police for quite a while it seems to be although allowed under control at the moment you can see a police line marching these people through the camera man comes over this way we go one hundred eighty degrees that being led by police vehicles as well and there is a voice shouting from the the truck directing everybody through the crowd here saying

that when they got to the place that they get into right now they'll be reunited with other members of the demonstration and there will be some kind of a break for a little while notice us a break this is an ending any time soon i've got the feeling this may be going on for quite a while sporadically we are seeing bottles thrown one of the reasons why i keep looking over my shoulder is of course the police are the target and we're just behind their lines these are anti capitalist demonstrators they're twenty demonstrators they always turn out the g. twenty events however this time around it's a little more spicy everybody we've spoken to has said that the presence of donald trump has made this even more of a demonstration that they want to come to we've also heard from some saying that angular merkel's policies have a gender it they say twenty summit which is is based a lot around globalism is something that they're demonstrating against that they're wanting to come out in the streets we heard from organizers potentially one hundred thousand people i don't think it was as many is that as many as that however due to

democratic party should be authentically economic populist in its orientation it's much better to from their vantage point to use rush as a lightning rod for for anger and disappointment i think long term there is a challenge from the grassroots in the united states of whether either party republicans or democrats should be a war party and it's clear or should be clear and this hopefully will be discussed in hamburg between putin and trump on friday it should be clear that what used to be called peaceful coexistence is absolutely crucial for the well being of people in the united states and russia and around the world so they taught should be in our future whether we can bring that about from the grassroots remains to be seen you quote on the hill saying quote frustrated democrats hoping to elevate their election porch and have a rebound in method for party leaders stop talking so much about russia and your

opinion norman as congress away think it's time dealing with the so-called russia get. well i think there should be independent investigations into what actually transpired it's tough to be independent when there's so much partisanship on capitol hill but the deeper question is what kind of future we want what kind of focus there should be in terms of the well being of the country and on that score i think that there is so much that needs to be dealt with in terms of education housing the elderly care for children so much else including the dire shortage of democracy frankly in both countries where instead of pointing fingers at each other citizens of each nation should look at the self-inflicted wounds where we are failing to achieve the potential democracy in our own countries you point out democrats are calling on an adjustment to shift their focus from russia

and the election to the u.s. economy in the twenty eight hundred elections and order to win back the house do you think this ship will happen then how important is it to democrats to win back the house. well you know a few moments ago you cited the article in the hill which came out about a week ago and i think it's very significant that even a couple of months ago there was so much of a adin coming from the top down about so-called russia gate that members of congress really were in sort of a bubble and i think we're not getting the message but as the article in the hill newspaper last week pointed out there has been a percolating up from the grassroots messaging to members of congress democrats that so many people at the grassroots are sick of hearing about russia gate yes it's something that should be looked into but there are so many issues so many deep concerns on a daily basis that are being elbowed out of the way by this democratic party obsession with russia gate so i think that message and i would say this has changed

brian stelter is supposed to be cnn's in-house expert on the media and now apparently he's going to new phrase anti journalism in a recent newsletter entitled white house versus c.n.n. stelter dramatically talked about how the new president has been attacking c.n.n. for covering him negatively and stelter like everyone else at c.n.n. for whatever reason cannot or will not see that that's true so stelter wrote a section in this white house versus c.n.n. newsletter with the subtitle pro journalism and anti-aging that he started out by talking about people who are pro journalism or pro jay as he calls it people who

are pro jay he writes are those who know c.n.n. has made mistakes but will learn from those mistakes and be accountable to them pro jay people know that most journalists try to be fair and right stelter notes these prone people are very staid and rational and they aren't mad at c.n.n. at all sales are totally defines this group of people and explains to the reader what these people think because stilts are apparently knows what everyone thinks including the very evil anti journalism people according to stelter anti journalism people or anti gay people don't promote accountability they just promote resentment and worse hatred these anti-gay people according to stelter as opposed to jay himself aren't interested in eradicating bias or improving news coverage they just want to stamp out reporting altogether and he writes that might sound naive but
