it's thursday june thirteenth five pm here in washington d.c. i'm ashley banks and you're watching our team america we begin today with news coming from the department of justice announcing it will not bring charges against a white police officer who shot and killed a black man in an ohio wal-mart beaver creek police officer sean williams fired the fatal shot it twenty two year old john crawford the third was carrying a toy rifle around wal-mart when another customer called the cops. joins me from the news room with how crawford family is reacting to the news ashley it's been nearly three years since beaverton ohio police officers shot and killed a black man carrying an unloaded toy or rifle through the aisles of wal-mart store surveillance video from august fifth twenty fourteen shows twenty two year old john crawford the third with the merchandise he picked up from a store shelf walking around while talking on his phone a customer called nine one one claiming crawford was loading the rifle and pointing

it at children according to authorities. the video proves otherwise but that call is what prompted beaverton police officers to storm in shooting and killing crawford in the store this week the department of justice announced it will not bring federal charges against the white police officer sean williams who shot and killed crawford a decision that family attorney michael right calls disappointing three more years for those who are just just indicate that they were not going to move forward any charges these officers. families very disappointed as you can imagine they're still reading it and they're just kind of computes as to why it took so long according to the department of justice and u.s. attorney's office investigators found insufficient evidence to pursue charges against williams stating it would be required both to disprove his stated reason for the shooting that he was in fear of death or serious bodily injury and to establish that williams instead acted with the specific intent to violate

crawford's civil rights. if this is not a case where officers should be prosecuted then i don't know under what set of facts will the department of justice prosecute any police officer you have a young man that was walking in a retail store and wall more with a product that was sold by that store in minutes later he was shot and killed police say crawford did not obey or commands to drop what later turned out to be an airsoft rifle crawford's family says he was shot on sight that any command from police came simultaneously with gunshots the family believes if police simply stopped to assess the situation the son and father of two would still be alive but months after the shooting a grand jury investigation found the two officers involved were justified in their actions the case has prompted protests in the street and now another demonstration in light of the latest justice department announcement is plans outside the

courthouse next week and now that the state and federal government have failed to bring criminal charges in this case the crawford family's only recourse is a civil lawsuit against the city and wal-mart which is set to go to court next year in washington simo dollars r e o r t now to georgia where an officer was caught on video beating a homeless woman with a baton inside of a gas station the incident took place in the cater georgia on june fourth and the video you can see officer p.j. were she to hitting the woman several times with a metal baton while she lay on the ground at one point the officer places his knee and her back in the metal baton on her neck the woman then places one of her hands on the baton an officer lar she'd then shelter quote let it go or i will shoot you take a look. but. you. know please go. back .

to. this video was originally posted online on june sixteenth a several days after an internal investigation was pursued clearing the officer of any wrongdoing now this video has been cheriton social media countless times over the last few weeks it's led the department to reopen the investigation earlier i was joined by reverend green one scott have learned senior minister of plymouth congressional united church of christ and i asked him should police departments do away with internal investigations the reality is that that's the standard that something has to be so agreed just in order for them not to be justified that's the sort of bias towards police officers and as you can see right here in this in this case and decatur georgia. he's not some doing her he's beating her there's a difference right he's not subduing her to handcuff her or to arrest her he's

beating her before the arrest because you can see that he repeatedly beats her and beats her and what would be characterized as resistance is only human reaction of somebody trying to defend themselves from somebody who's mercilessly beating them and that's what's going on in this videotape of that he's not doing he's beating being the person right and you can also hear in the video people don't resist just lay there but natural way if you're getting hit by a baton you're not just going to lay still and like you've said these internal investigations are by is so usually they are a fair and a fact of now and let me point out that that's why you have police officers operating for impunity because they know that if they involved in the process in terms of investigation it's still slanted towards them it's biased towards them and so they can go on back with impunity they can. they can treat the community and go away because they know that there's really going to be no consequences that they will have to pay unless something is so egregious and yet it has to be discovered they have to be verifiable evidence so it's all it's all slanted in the direction

taken over by government or they've made sure that they have not had the legal kinds of teeth and want to prosecute police officers so there's still it's been it's been a ruse when they set up soviet review boards because they really lack the power and water to be able to implement judgment so we really need true civilian review boards and have the legal authorize legally and i want to prosecute them police officers that are particularly caught doing wrong and labor hoods and communities and i want to get back to the video we can see the officer yelling at the woman and countless lee beating her with this metal but time we hear him saying. the national weather service in mount holly new jersey has issued

and twenty four years old as well as pregnant women are incarcerated more than two thousand inmates were left without functioning showers and toilets or access to drinking water according to an inmate smother prisoners were so hot and sweaty they used standing toilet water to wash themselves officials say the geothermal line which helps cool the non air conditioned person was also damaged by saturday's storm according to the miami herald several employees of the florida prison claim the stench was so bad in the dorms that officers and other stuff have not been able to work now on wednesday state officials said showers and toilets at lowell are operational but water testing was still being conducted to ensure it's safe to drink in the meantime some inmates relatives told the miami herald that female prisoners were being forced to buy their own water from the prison canteen or go

thirsty critics say the broken water pump is just the latest in a long history of sanitary problems at the prison according to state documents dorms at lowell correctional institution have been plagued with mauled broken toilets and parasites in the water the prison also reportedly has a history of contagious illnesses this morning florida officials tweeted water quality testing at the prison concluded successfully confirming the facility is operating normally so far there has been no public indication the state has dispatched inspectors to assess the safety and welfare of the inmates at lowell marine up. miami crossing over to the west coast now only u.s. navy has polluted drinking water supplies in washington state with toxic chemicals on would be island some wells are contaminated at levels four hundred percent higher than what is considered safe artie's brigida santo's has more. these

chemicals are known as per floral algal substances or more simply as p.s.a. ss or p.s.t.'s which the e.p.a. defines as quote a class of manmade chemicals that are not found naturally in the environment now these are widely used in stain resistant water resistant and nonstick products however in the case of puget sound these chemicals are mainly coming from firefighting foam that's used in naval training exercises that there has been contamination found in private and public drinking wells near cooper bill's navy landing field as well as near the naval air station on we'd be it's unclear whether anybody on the island is sick and that's because these chemicals can remain in the body for over a decade and in addition to that the c.d.c.'s agency for toxic substances says that there isn't enough data to evaluate p.f.a. s exposure on humans however it has found that quote laboratory animals exposed to
