america this a boring institution it just puts us in a place where we will not come close to ending what we know is is racial oppression and racism news country and so there is no way that america the bulk of america could stand for keeping these vestiges around in any place in the country and that's what the anti k.k.k. . protesters are saying they were saying that these confederate statues they represent white supremacy and they really don't belong in this city now dr williams i want to take a quick listen to a couple of protesters we heard at the end of that package there but they were alarmed that it seemed the officers were protecting the klan take a lesson. on how do they protect that how do we have the right to go have hate speech in the middle of the freaking crowd right there right they don't it's not ok hate speech is not free speech it's not let's go no

word about that people like me who want to live and who want to stay. live. for me. dr williams those three protesters were a bit fired up they were pretty upset at that rally that i attended law enforcement came geared with riot gear and militarize in quitman in your opinion why would law enforcement be so willing to protect a violent hate group like the k.k.k. . in the united states we have a responsibility to ensure that people have an opportunity to articulate their opinions in the supreme court has ruled on this and several cases over the years looking at the importance of free speech and what the limitations on speech should or should not be certainly the members of the k.k.k. have a right to be able to voice their opposition to the removal of those statues in the same way that the protesters had every right to be in the park to articulate their concerns the police were there to ensure that no violence occurred that both sides

had that opportunity and would be allowed to do so in a space that was safer both i think what you're hearing on the part of the protesters is frustration that often you don't see this type of police action when it involves folks who are raising issues of racial inequality if you think about black lives matter protests for example we've seen countless instances across united states where black lives matter protesters have been manhandled by police and haven't gotten the same protection and i think that's part of the the anx that you see on the part of the protesters here are saying why is this hate speech being produced or protected when in fact we don't see this often happening when you're talking about minorities under assault dr williams that's a good point and that's exactly what the and take k.k.k. protesters are saying they're like you would never see these many officers at a black lives matter protest protecting the black lives matter protesters now perry is there anything that you would like to add. a few years back back in two thousand

and two i attended my first k.k.k. rally in opposition of course what they were standing for they held a protest on martin luther king day in jackson tennessee and i never forgot the necessity for the police officers in one case a state troopers to basically cordon off and protect them because outside of that there were some some white supremacy supporters along with those who were in opposition and those who are. i'm not go to knuckle confrontations so for those who are the target of the protests the police doing their job. protecting the first amendment is a necessity and is something that we need to respect right now given the k.k.k. history of hating jews lynching and murdering of black people perry why do they still exist in this country well unfortunately capitalism makes horror of all of

our patriotic values in all of us and sadly enough the one of the gentleman in the in the clips as he showed over he spoke about the fear of a dominant class to dominant class in america white americans are protestants and this whole idea of protecting a heritage is more akin to protecting well the same way slavery was not about a war between the states it was not about states' rights that revisionist history is long past and long gone it was about protecting capital and that capital was was . came about through the labor force labor of a certain class black books and so this is what we've seen to day take your country back back to way back to days when i held all the resources dr

williams is there anything you like to add to that. i would simply agree and say that i think part of the problem you're seeing nationally now in the removal of these types of markers of monuments in justice park was renamed justice park and it once been named for stonewall jackson the confederate war veteran or war general and the reason people are doing this is that monument some markers tend to celebrate the values of a society if we continue to honor slave holders what are we saying about where we are as a society our present. the supreme court once famously famously ruled that you know our value should be marked by the progress of an evolving society we've evolved beyond or we want to believe that we've evolved beyond the point that we celebrate a confederate history which is terry rightly points out was predicated on protecting the institution of slavery in the human bondage of people of color black people in this country so certainly at this point as we look at a national black lives matter movement as we talk about being post racial and all

the problems inherent in that designation this is time to revisit that history and this isn't a question of white history or black history it's american history that has to be told honestly and done so in a way that affirms our democratic values i really quickly gentlemen we have about thirty seconds left i'm going to get a perry first off some say black lives matter is just as bad an evil as the klan would you say to a person i would say they're absolutely wrong and the fact is when we're talking about including a class of people who've been excluded from the benefits of america's dream then you can not oppose that with with any sort of value validation all right dr williams. well when people articulate that we should be saying all lives matter that may very well be true but the question is what laws are what who are the people that find themselves most in jeopardy in this moment they are persons of color black people and so if you truly believe as the founders did that all life is important in our lives or we're all people are created equal then you should be on
