live you see. believed in the. coming up on our team america i hate violence and death that protests and trolling still virginia over the weekend as white supremacists clash with counter protesters leaving one dead and dozens injured. we're live on the ground from charlottesville getting reaction from city residents local leaders and experts on why the tragic events unfolded at this weekend's. and does america facing a new war against a white supremacy we look at where the neo nazis movement stands in the u.s. and abroad.
4:01 pm
it's monday august fourteenth four pm in washington d.c. i'm ashley banks and you're watching our team america today we have special coverage of the racial crisis in troll let's go virginia will be live throughout the program from the ground right now as our team is on a pair of pell anya. hi ashley yes i'm just a few blocks away from where heather hire a thirty two year old american woman a charlottesville local was killed while participating in an anti-fascist demonstration you can see over my shoulder though perhaps not extraordinary well a memorial wall which has been set up to honor her she's being remembered today by all accounts as a very sweet and caring person who her family says died fighting for what she believed in the demonstration higher was participating in on saturdays it was being held in response to events here. in charlottesville which took place on friday
4:02 pm
night when a group of white nationalists from around the country gathered in this city to protest the removal of a robert e. lee statue now the statue of robert e. lee stands ironically in a park called emancipation park actually and i say that ironically because as you and many others know levy was the confederate general who led the south to failure in the american civil war and it's possible if he had been victorious the emancipation proclamation issued by president abraham lincoln in one thousand nine hundred sixty three may have never been a law here in the american south in fact i may be standing in a completely different country altogether today if that had been the case and yet it's twenty seventeen and the american woman has been killed at this event and all our political establishment seems capable of doing is pointing the finger at political opponents actually the point of today's show is going to be to turn that
4:03 pm
finger in on us as as americans and question what role white supremacy has played historically in this country but also ask a key question which it which you likely won't hear brought up anywhere else after a week of such bellicose rhetoric coming out of washington we're hearing threats of a war on north korea threats of military action in venezuela from our president so we have to ask actually with the u.s. military such a force for instability often partnering with right wing groups whether in syria ukraine or venezuela what is the political impact that has on the country here those are the questions we're going to explore in our interviews coming up here from charlottesville from washington the team is working hard to put this all together so we hope you stay tuned all right on yeah like you said we will get to those points later on now i have redacted tonight host we cannot he was in trolls ville on saturday and he actually sold the tragic event take place when it came to
4:04 pm
the car running into pedestrians and killing their hire can you describe the scene for us. yeah let me first say that i know people used to being with me being funny and on a comedy show but this is all very serious and and i was the red minivan you see in the film the video they keep showing i was standing toward it off to the side of that. and it all happened so suddenly but i saw the white car crash into the minivan and then people up in the air and then it was just horrific you know i didn't know if my friends were were hurt or or worse for a little while and and there were people on the ground everywhere injured and a lot of broken limbs and everything and obviously one person died and it was it was all very horrible and out of the blue because you know i when i first got there like ten minutes prior that i was filming with my phone just filming a very positive march you know an anti-racist march there were no white
4:05 pm
supremacists around at least at that minute. and people were you know the march was all very positive against racism against bigotry against hatred and that's when this happened so before that accident took place it was a pretty calm around the area well i had only gone there ten minutes earlier i know that it was not very calm earlier in the day i know there were a lot of fighting we could see the remnants of crap thrown all over the streets and i will cop car covered in some kind of pain or something that people had thrown on it in the park the lead park was was they had blocked it off because of all the fights that had gone on there so there was clearly had been a lot of violence but the moment i got there i didn't see it so i know you weren't there you just that you weren't there the entire time from the beginning to the end of this rally but a lot of people have mentioned the police presence and how there was some but it seemed like the police weren't really intervening in any way can you say that yeah
4:06 pm
there was there was plenty of police presence in general we passed a whole line of swat cops and i think. on the way to where the accident happened or where they actually a terror attack happened. but in that area at the moment of the attack there were basically no police and it took them longer than. longer than fire trucks to show up to the area i do want to say that the people who did a brilliant job in really heroes are the volunteer medics that were there immediately tending to people. professionally in there soon after and started helping people in the fire department got there soon after and help people so they all did a great job but i didn't see many cops until i'd say at least fifteen minutes after well we're going to have to leave it there thank you so much that was we can host of redacted tonight thank you so much anya. thanks ashleigh well as i
4:07 pm
mentioned we have a team here in charlottesville working extremely hard to bring you the news one member of the team who's been working exceptionally hard especially throughout the weekend is our very own in the toughest suite who was not only here yesterday she was here on saturday as well natasha you've been getting some of the local reaction to these specific events i mean as you can probably feel here it's a very somber mood in charlottesville virginia here very different than it was here only forty eight hours ago and the mood people are coming together still and they're leaving flowers and candles remembering the three people who lost their lives saturday. the mood here in charlottesville virginia is completely different than it was twenty four hours ago as you can see it's somber mood people are leaving supports with flowers and candles remembering that the three people who died on saturday.
4:08 pm
the time for mourning and putting all of what happened. into perspective we're all suffering from this tells a starlet's full residents while preparing for what she called an unpleasant event she says she was absolutely shocked regarding the death of three people tied to saturday's rally you know i've lived here for eighteen years there's nothing like this has ever happened according to bar tells it's not something her town stands for i knew it was going to be bad we everyone in town who was going to be violence because the groups were bragging ahead of time but the fact that someone actually lost their life that someone would actually take such a violent step to deliberately kill other people was just beyond i just couldn't believe that according to i clean a local shop owner while he's witnessed many protests during his younger days he says saturday was different so those coming as expected over their murders never expected and that took place right in my back door sitting there i heard the
4:09 pm
screams and i opened up to my my back door to let some of the people who were fleeing the car coming and as people took shelter in my clean shop he says he knows why outside hate groups targeted charlottesville they have a third generation hippie population politically politically and socially left of center you know open to diversity and that despite his muslim politically views i clean says he along with many other locals are for keeping property least emancipation park attorney general jeff sessions has announced that there is now a federal investigation into saturday's rally and the driver of the dodge charger james alex feels is being charged with second degree murder in charlottesville virginia natasha sweets artsy. thank you so much for that natasha while we have a treat for viewers here now i am often talking to david swanson from washington
4:10 pm
d.c. you know him from his work against us imperialism and please put your website acct . world war dot org a good one world beyond world beyond war dot org but today i'm going to talk about what's happened here in charlottesville david because you are from here and so i just wanted to start by getting your reaction to the fact these rallies were planned in your city to begin with and what it's been like seeing people from from outside starlets will come in and hold white nationalist rallies it's very disturbing and it's important for people to understand it's important to me for people to understand that almost all of these people are not from charlottesville and most of them are not from virginia and they're not wanted here and they're not appreciated that being said not enough people in charlottesville oppose them and turn out against them and advocate for taking down the statues which is something that i support so i'm i'm sorry you had to come here for this i know you've been
4:11 pm
here for some good things that we've done good resolutions passed by city council what is your response to those who make an argument that this is about the first and then. if they weren't armed with guns and pepper spray and sticks and shields and advocating violence and immediately and predictably engaging in violence i would say it's about the first amendment there's no first amendment right to attack people when we do peace rallies we aren't allowed to have posters on sticks we have to have hollow cardboard tubes that don't threaten anyone because we nonviolent activists are such a danger but these are. white nationalist who cooks in nazi fascist agitators and they are allowed to come fully armed and when they militarized the whole town with weapons of war they then say oh well we have to stand by and let them commit acts of violence because there aren't a common i believe the governor made was there were actually there were actually more armed militia members or members from these groups and there were armed police
4:12 pm
but i wanted to point out also that the mayor of charlottesville michael singer he initially voted against. removing the statue of robert e. lee from what i understand but he seems to have changed his tune a little bit after this weekend's events is this too little too late to you as a charlottesville resident well he's an opportunist but it's good news if the public in charlottesville and around the country have convinced him that he should be on the side of taking down the statues because he voted against it while wanting to appear as somehow the leader of the movement against trump ism if he's now come around to as i hope he has to supporting taking down the statues because the mayor of kentucky has said in response to charlottesville they're going to take down all their confederate statues the mayor of new orleans of course took down all their statues explain why quite eloquently you know if our mayor brings up the rear i'm all for it and all applaud him for that and finally. campbell one of our hosts who
4:13 pm
was here this past weekend was just telling our anchor in washington actually he witnessed police they were here but they didn't do much he said to protect the counter demonstrators that were here protesting these groups does that surprise you you know we like all good people is from charlottesville or from uva but you know it doesn't totally surprise me usually they are after people on the left not people on the right and here they come with the helicopters and the tanks and the armed weapons of war and they are intimidating people into staying home people on the good side of things there would have been a much higher turnout without that militarization and not only did they not act but they did not accomplish anything for peace or freedom of speech they killed two of their own in a helicopter crash but i'm not aware of anything else they accomplished and that's as you said with a very heavily militarized police something we've been covering on our t.v.
4:14 pm
for quite a long time and the impacts we see is often doesn't make anybody safer in fact all too often we see something like this tragedy play out david swanson activist thank you so much for coming on and talking about this again i'm sorry to have to see you in person here in charlottesville under these circumstances thank you. well now into new york where thousands are lining the streets anticipating the arrival of president trump this after a series of protests broke out around the country following developments in charlottesville this weekend here's trinity chavez with more. in the wake of the deadly weekend violence in charlottesville hundreds are taking to the streets to protest what is being called a domestic act of terror this is only the latest demonstration to occur following the incident over the weekend hundreds of rallies erupted all across the country to speak out against hate and racism. protesters filled the streets of new york over the weekend marching through midtown manhattan times square and you can
4:15 pm
square demanding for the president to a few white nationalist groups including the k.k.k. and neo nazis who clashed with the anti racism protesters in charlottesville. i can point and again every. city where they continue your. demonstrations also took place in other major cities including seattle chicago baltimore and san francisco to show support of charlottesville thousands took part in the multi-faith vigils and rallies across the country you are standing with one hundred other groups across the country today and these that are doing the exact same thing telling people that we are going to put up with that craft and have been in chinatown this week. and i look to my left and i saw how their higher lying on the ground and i saw the life pass from arise and i watched. it from that moment on ice words myself that i would not stop
4:16 pm
the fight against white supremacy i would never let this happen again i would never let another person die. because of white supremacy because of domestic terrorism although many of them were separate demonstrations they all shared a similar message. states of america. were you. people at that point or are right right. meanwhile counter protest also took place. in seattle tensions were high as various counter protesters took to the streets at one point you could even see trump supporters clashing with law enforcement police said they had to use pepper spray and blast walls to disperse crowds after fireworks were thrown at officers here you can see some demonstrators pouring milk in their eyes after being tear gassed president trump is expected to arrive later this evening this will be the first time back at trump tower since taking office on january twentieth meanwhile protesters planned to stay gathered
4:17 pm
outside of trump tower reporting in new york trinity child as r.t. after saturday's events in charlottesville the word neo nazis has once again become trending on the screens of social media and the context of the torch rally held to prior to the tragedy but when similar torch rallies in quite open glorification of naziism happens in europe few in the us be attention to that argues alexia reports. this may look like last weekend's rally with torches in charlottesville except it's not this happens every year sometimes even twice a year in the heart of europe ukraine's capital kiev and doesn't seem to surprise anyone anymore these people marched in support of the nine hundred forty s. insurgency movement in ukraine saying that they were heroes who fought for ukraine's independence from the soviet union the problem is that in this fight the obama army openly collaborated with the nazi invading army killing tens of thousands of jews poles and russians in the process there was even an s.s.

battalion knocked operating in ukraine and led by the man who founded the. beach who was behind the anti jewish programs in the western ukrainian city of evolve on june thirtieth one thousand nine hundred one basically the first thing his battalions did when they marched into the city after two thousand and twelve jews were massacred within the month of july back then what did that have to do with you know fighting for the country's independence open neo nazis in order glorification of those who fought alongside nazis is not something new for europe in some countries those are reduced to underground cells and many others people with such views are actually in power or out in the streets from ukrainian far right nationalists openly supporting nazi rooms and symbols to marches in the baltic states in memory of members of the baltic s.s. allegiance and openly fascist golden dawn party in greece but all that rarely gets attention of the mainstream media in the united states just recently the washington
4:19 pm
post finally rang the alarm bells in this article suggesting that the far right in ukraine were holding the government by something no one wants to be held by and act with absolute impunity which does not let ukraine embrace the values it's supposed to embrace but that was the rare exception when senator john mccain and house speaker paul ryan tweeted out their gleaming impressions of meeting ukrainian parliament speaker would be the. man whose book proudly showed him with one of the nazi s.s. symbols there was no outrage and not a word on the mainstream media and sometimes it gets even borderline bizarre when the official twitter account of nato tweeted out a promotional clip of the forest brothers the one thousand nine hundred fifty s. insurgency guerilla movement in the baltic states which also fought against what they called the soviet occupation but apparently nato the organization which was created right after the fall of fascism in europe cared little for the fact that many of those guerillas were former members of the s.s.

battalions as admitted even by latvian historians on the latvian history dot com website the tragedy in charlottesville reignited the talk about neo nazis in the united states when it comes to the rise of fire right in europe however the media and the society on this side of the atlantic prefers to turn a blind eye which if you consider that there cannot be such things as you know nazis and the damage which was down to everyone seven decades ago is nothing short of baffling. the reporting from washington d.c. . as we witness the rise of violent white supremacist nationalist groups in the us we may better understand their agenda and motives by considering a global perspective to discuss this i'm now joined by author and investigative journalist max blumenthal thanks so much for joining us max good to be on with you know many americans i'm sure are would be shocked to learn that the u.s. has actually provided direct support for national was
4:21 pm
a nazi identified groups and ukraine so my question to you is how can the us support of violent as no nationalist state abroad and then condemn that same movement here well it's a great question and i think we need to start out this conversation by stating as clearly as possible that what we saw with the unite the right neo nazi white nationalist rally in charlottesville was a distinctly american phenomenon that sim that revolved around neo confederate symbols that reflects the history of the united states and whose main symbol whose most important symbol was the presidency of donald trump and not any foreign leader but we also have to ask why americans don't know that their government has sent millions upon millions of dollars to the ukrainian military and its national guard units which are which include neo nazi militias like the as of the tally and they don't know that representative john conyers attempted to prevent that funding to
4:22 pm
the neo nazi as of battalion which is explicitly neo nazi whose members wear s.s. symbols and that the pentagon attempted to obstruct his met his measure because of battalion or the best fighters against russian separatists we are pumping money into a government that includes andre peru be who is from a party that claimed that it existed to defend the white race and who was recently hosted here in washington by senator john mccain and representative paul ryan two of the key republicans who are considered sort of moderate adult figures in washing . this is a scandal and the reason this is happening is because these are the local nazis you have the bad nazis in charlottesville but then the woak nazis who fight russia just like the wouk well hobbies that we funded in syria to fight the government of syria a russian ally and we have to also have a conversation about the three billion from now it's of i think four billion dollars in foreign aid we send each year to israel
4:23 pm
a country whose existence is predicated on a blood and soil ideology which now has an official policy of putting non jewish african migrants in literal camps simply because they're not jewish now imagine if that was happening in the united states to groups because they were not white that's what we're supporting there and it's the absolute height of hypocrisy for supporters of israel to attempt to condemn what happened in charlottesville while supporting this blood in soil movement. five thousand miles away i want to move on now to president trump's thoughts or his initial reaction when the charlottesville incident took place that killed to have their higher now he said he condemned it by saying quote he treated bigotry and violence on many sides on many sides with your response to that i mean there's been a lot of low moments during the trump presidency it's definitely a race to the bottom but i would consider this his lowest moment at a time when real moral leadership was needed and it could have come from anywhere and he did what everyone in his worst critics expected him to do which is to
4:24 pm
condemn all sides when we actually witnessed a neo nazi deliberate what appears to be a deliberate neo nazi terror attack on innocent people this is a moment that the democrats should seize on and they should have seized on it from the beginning the critique of trump should have been about his bigotry about his divisiveness and about his willingness to side with a small slice of his base against the future of this country and yet the democrats have been uncomfortable with that narrative now it's being forced upon them they have been much more comfortable with rush. sygate and with attacking trump because of foreign collusion this is about america and the future of this country if the democrats fail to seize on this moment then you know i can't really do anything for them and they've betrayed the people who were wounded and killed in charlottesville we're going to have to leave it there thank you so much max blumenthal that was author and investigative journalist max blumenthal anya. thanks so much
4:25 pm
ashley that's actually going to do it for us from out here in charlottesville just for this hour though you can be sure to catch us that five pm will be live here in charlottesville with more updates and more interviews take care. of your record all you're working hard you know there are. more. in case you had any doubt about what the media's job is these days brian williams has made it clear he was doing a panel about what's going on in north korea when he said that the media's job is to scare people to death for real he literally said that that is the media's job to
4:26 pm
scare people you can't make this up brian williams a man who has been on american televisions for more than thirty five years telling people the news and emitted that the media's job is just to scare people and the craziest part is he was completely cavalier about that statement he just said it in the middle of this discussion he was having with the panelists and no one blinked an eye no one corrected him to say well brian actually our job is to report the facts about the tensions between north korea and the u.s. and just in general no one said our job is to help people understand how we got here after decades of bad blood they just heard brian williams say that the media's job is to scare people to death not just scare them but scare them to death and they didn't even blink this is the same guy who back in april also called the launch of tomahawk missiles beautiful when the military released video of a missile strike on a syrian airfield. williams actually said the beautiful pictures that night
4:27 pm
reminded him of a line from a leonard cohen song i am guided by the beauty of our weapons and then he called the images beautiful pictures of fear some armaments he practically fond over a missile launch like a teenage girl falling over a pop star this is the same guy who just admitted that the media's job is to scare people to death he's also the same guy who was suspended from n.b.c. news for telling people multiple lies and b c yanked him from his anchor desk when it was revealed that he made up a whole bunch of facts just to make himself sound more like an expert when he was doing his job of scaring people to death of course the stuff he made up was about more war he exaggerated his war experience just to sound scarier to people so it should really come as no surprise that he just said on national t.v. that the media's job is to scare people it's actually great that he finally

admitted it and the surprising thing in this story is that at this point in time it still works. you're watching our team got special report. this bug me has been up by basically everything that you think you know about civil society have broken down. there's always going to be somebody else one step ahead of the game. we should not be on the normalising mind. we don't need people that think like this on our planet. this is an incredibly tense situation. would you have for breakfast yesterday why would you put those for the face your
