advocate director for the tennessee charter school center mr mercer thanks for your time tonight i wanted to talk to you because our children are listening and they are watching and they are being influenced what does this change in education in your opinion give us your take on how this should be handled. well first of all thank you for having me on. my condolences to the family of heather higher and to all those who have suffered from injustice. tonight i think we need to take a pause we need to think about what this means in our history and then how this reflects upon where we move forward after four hundred years we've been having a conversation in this country about how we view each other we look at any quality we look at racism we look at these things and we have these intersections where there seems like a moment where we can say ok it's time to move forward is that a movement or we have

a moment right now mr mercer you have got that you know what i think we're at another moment and yet we're having these ideological conversations again we're going back and forth with each other and what happens usually after the debate and after all of the emotion we go back into a default setting and i think it's a conversation now that we need to have about what are the systematic issues that are creating these problems and deal with those systematic where are the policies what about what are our institutional frameworks and luther what about the president today. you know he talked about you know history revisionism that's basically where he was going is it going to be george washington or thomas jefferson next what are your thoughts on that. well i think the president went to an extreme with this notion of where we can potentially start to a race history but i do think there's something here and i wanted those people who actually like the fact that we have reminders that history is there us to know

where we've been and where we need to go and so one of my concerns is that we get into the guard about oh let's a race these things and move them out of our way and therefore once they are gone we no longer have to deal with them so my concern is not that my concern is having a dialogue a discussion but also action policy looking at the systematic issues that create this injustice and to deal with those the so did mr mercer did the president complicate things today. i think the president complicated things for himself politically because i think the president is not being sensitive to the issue that people are upset about the division the realities of this country and some of the injustice that still exists and so i think he has done damage to himself because he's not being honest he's not being straightforward with being sympathetic around how do we come together as a nation and he is one of the only people in this country right now that can do this he sits in a position of power that allows for him to have

the country from an attack yes that means for a long of young troops they're going to be in a wartime situation you don't shoot people in this world said mattis you don't shoot at people in this world unless you want to bear the consequences and of quote but one of the most interesting quotes in this whole exchange fiery exchange between the united states and the countries in the region around north korea is actually from the south korean president who was just elected a short while ago speaking at a televised address on tuesday president and said that no one should be allowed to decide on a military action on the korean peninsula without south korean agreement our government he continued will do everything it can to prevent the war from breaking out and if we remember the president actually was elected on the platform of trying to you know have south korea more independent in its decisions from the united states and let's not forget there is also china in this whole situation with the

foreign ministry of chinese issuing a statement on monday that the current situation on the korean peninsula is highly complex and sensitive we hope to see that the relevant sides extinguished through their out their words and actions this. adding fuel amid tensions we hope to see them improve mutual trust and move toward the goal of preserving peace and stability on the peninsula as well as realizing they do nuclearization of the peninsula so in a nutshell china beijing is saying here that you know all sides should cool that off and the situation should be resolved at the negotiation table rather than you know in a military matter so we will see how the situation develops but definitely it's a little less chance that it was last week with the fire and fewer comments from the president of the united states for more on this we go to former u.s. diplomat jim jeffords jim nice to have you with us to see is kim backing down what do you make of this i would necessarily put it that way look you know up until

a few days ago we had all this trash talk between pyongyang and washington a lot of people were quite upset about that frankly i don't think it matters that much as jill you don't think you heard locked and loaded no i don't think i was it i think a couple things one remember we hear the news about there being a back channel in new york be directly between the united states and north korea i think president moon's statement from south korea is very welcome i think the main thing though if i had to point to anything would be the chinese statement to the effect that if the united states starts it they will not allow regime change in north korea they will not allow the north korean state to be destroyed and we if we do that we're at war with china and i think people take them seriously but if north korea starts it. he's on his own and i think i think that that sobered everybody up with secretary chiller since said that the sanctions worked is the right and no i don't think so i don't think the sanctions really amount to that much even the same ones were passed in the security council there but it made a big hullabaloo of the russians the chinese signed onto if you actually look at

the details it involves a lot of things that the chinese have been doing for a very long time really nothing much change so are we seeing china having an influence by saying that if the united states were to do a preemptive strike on north korea that they would side with kim. i mean is china now dictating to the united states how we defend ourselves i wouldn't want to look at that way and i would hope that president trump and our national leadership is not looking at it that way when all is said and done korea is way over there on the other side of the pacific the chinese the russians the south koreans the japanese they're the ones that are on the front line they should be taking the lead here and it seems to me that making a lot of threats and sanctions and and so forth is it isn't going to do it for our what is intercontinental ballistic missile shortens the world a little bit i mean it it shortens the time frame i mean minutes away from getting hit if he has that gave a little maybe as a capability and something you know you saw there have been reports casting some doubt on this report about a miniature rise nuclear could put on

a long road you want to take that chance who wants to take that chance and that's why if things can be called down and frankly i think the mutual freeze proposal from the chinese is a valid one the freeze their missile program we freeze or action by the chinese in that that's why don't why is that not a good deal for well it sounds like a good deal but how do we know that kim is going to stop tests and what if he continues one what's our next move what we have the option well again if the deals on the table and both sides are rejecting it we don't really know do it but if the americans are willing to say let's talk about that what's the harm and if you think the door is open to talks no i certainly hope so you know this that this thing is a roller coaster we were here before we're down here today maybe we'll be back up there again tomorrow but the president the last few days has cooled. good good i'm glad to see that again we know that he is mean to interrupt you but his your opponents or spinning say hey look the tough talk on kim worked and he's backing
