to stand down this is just the dance the right questions and the right answers. question. on the news tonight the president takes on the media once again calling the charlottesville attacker a murderer and condemning violence all and both sides and new images show kim jong un examining a map of why while reports indicate the north korean leader might be toning back the rhetoric and newly leaked e-mails show paul manner for it was skeptical and ultimately word jack did meeting with russian officials i'm ed schultz reporting tonight from washington d.c. this is the news on our team america.
8:01 pm
good evening friends we start tonight with the president and his most extensive comments so far on the tragedy last weekend in charlottesville virginia the president feeling the comforts of trump towers came out to promote infrastructure in the signing of an executive order streamlining the process of construction impermanent what happened in the wake of that announcement was a president exploding with opinion and off the cuff remarks with the country fixated on race relations and what transpired last weekend in charlottesville the president only loaded on the driver of the car who killed thirty two year old rather hire a driver of the car is a disgrace to himself his family and this country. and that is you can call it terrorism you can call it murder and call it whatever you want i would just call it
8:02 pm
as the fastest one to come up with a good verdict that's what i call it because there is a question is it murder is a terrorism and then you get into legal semantics the driver of the car is a murderer and what he did was a horrible horrible inexcusable thing after days of listening to critics trump defended his first statement on saturday claiming the media distorted what he said and i wanted to make sure unlike most politicians that what i said was correct not make a quick statement the statement i made on saturday the first statement was a fine statement but you don't make statements that direct unless you know the fact it takes a little while to get the facts you still don't know the facts and it's a very very important process to me and it's a very important statement so i don't want to go quickly and just make a statement for the sake of making a political statement i want to know the facts it didn't stop there true point on
8:03 pm
to say there was fault on both sides for what the country witnessed on saturday when you say the alter right. to define old right to me you define it go home and say that's. fine and the scene ok what. is your excuse me what about the all to left they came charging at the as you say the alter right do they have any semblance of guilt it's not. ask you this what about the fact they came charging that they came charging with clubs in the hand swing in clubs do they have any problem i think they do you know our current that was a horrible horrible day wait a minute i'm not finished i'm not finished is the robert e. lee statue debate was the seed planted for the. tested turned violent and deadly the president said he believes it should be left up to local municipalities to decide on monuments and war statues but many of those people were there to protest
8:04 pm
the taking down of the statue of robert e. lee so this week it's robert e. lee i notice that stonewall jackson is coming down i wonder is it george washington next week and is that thomas jefferson the week after you know you oh you really do have to ask yourself where does it stop was george washington a slave owner so will george washington now lose his status are we going to take down his being are we going to take down are we going to take down statues to judge white how about thomas jefferson what do you think of thomas jefferson you're like him are you ok good are we going to take down the sacha because he was a major slave owner now we're going to take down his statue so you know what it's fine you're changing history you're changing culture. for more on this we go to our political panel tonight for tonight it is johnny williams new york city council and also ed martin president of the eagle forum gentlemen good to have you with us at all start with you tonight i watching the president today and i'm thinking ok words
8:05 pm
the upside on this he wanted to come out and talk about infrastructure but he was loaded for bear to clear the beach on this whereas the up side of what the president did today well you know i want to make one observation i've seen no one make and that is that this president with twitter and with his video that he released saturday during the crisis and then since then has there ever been a more accessible president and there's complaints about press conferences but actually in real time he's responding to what's going on in the country and in the culture and i think he's upset about it i think he's mad at the guy that killed the woman i think he's right to be but after that this is stereo i mean ed the fake news moniker has never been more accurate they run in circles making hysteria when the fact is there was a tragedy everyone has condemned it and it's time to kind of get back on track i think he's mad about it and when he talks about both sides it seems like the president is giving the white supremacy and the radicals an alibi now i know he has
8:06 pm
even mentioned they had a permit to look at i'm out here and i'm out here five miles from ferguson and one ferguson happened you know what it was it was you know it was it was racist bigoted rioting by black people and soros funded folks and somebody should have said they're all all these people are rotten people when you come with bats and no permit to come in you're not looking for you're not looking for friendly discussion and argument you're looking to cause real problems and that's what he's seeing there it's a problem on all sides germany were to the president go wrong today if he did i mean this is a great conversation this is slightly amusing to me because we have been saying for so long that conservatives particularly those who go the right on the republican. basics supporting racist bigoted views and policies and for so long to say no you have a strong now we have a sitting president who is legitimizing white supremacy i was legitimizing housing
8:07 pm
live as one of them who legit i will never finish who only god. who's li who know each of them izing this is i'm not finished i know you want to interrupt me because you tried to pivot to some foolish is about twitter but he is now saying that it is legitimate ideology to be a white supremacist to be a no it's not and if you it's not that you are and if you and you are on the other side of your lying there is also eyeing thing wrong with you so so you are not i say you shouldn't present you should last as a man i know you don't want to know you don't want to be labeled a bigot and a racist i understand it but we now have a sitting president and what's great is that the whole world can watch and see what he's saying and mr martin is still defending the legitimize the words of permits and naziism and saying that anybody who pushes back on them has the has the same kind of accountability and with a baseball bat who hit a bailout also and hate jews and compares ferguson people who are not saying that
8:08 pm
black people are better people who are not say get these people out of my city people who are saying we are tired of the supremacy has been pushed upon us pushing back somehow those two are in ok now we knew this was true from the beginning but we have a sitting president david duke thanked the presidency for the president united states of america what he said as he added you think the president speaking from the heart i think the president is upset about what he saw and let's be honest he said over and over again the hatred that happened he said today this look at my colleague here is as plain as lying about it what the president said was the people that were there that were skinheads white nationalists nazis k.k.k. they're all condemned what he also was saying also there are people know. no in america there are other good people there are other people there that care about the robert e. lee history that are not bad people just like look at them and if you have any are now telling all of these eyes true to have here back to your f.d.r.
8:09 pm
was still money and is even or about is a hot topic we will have you back germany williams and martin great to have both of you with us tonight spirited discussion no doubt about it the residents of charlottesville virginia are still mourning the tragic events of saturday the incident could change the way race relations are viewed and dealt with here in the united states or to use correspondent ashley banks as more with us tonight as well as the justice department has launched a civil rights investigation into the charlottesville attack that killed thirty two year old had their hire and injured one thousand others james alex fields jr he made his first court appearance yesterday and has been denied bail has been charged with second degree murder malicious who wounding an failure to stop in an accident resulting in death his next hearing is scheduled for august twenty fifth now this is the second rally held in charlot ville in the last two months in july i attended and covered a k.k.k. rally where the group was protesting against the removal of the same confederate
8:10 pm
statue there are more rallies planned for next month the white nationalists richard spencer he is seeking permission to speak at the university of florida while white nationalist press and we're going ten is still planning a white lives matter rally on the campus of texas and m. university after the school canceled an earlier attempt in a neo confederate group has asked for permission to rally and richmond last night at you spoke with reverend jesse jackson to get his take on what needs to be done moving forward and to maybe put a stop to these rallies. the president's leadership there will. be reduced to see is that people have you know while the vote is on with a truck with tweet. to one of these between miss. jefferson sessions removed consider the crews from citizens mongering police behavior of a blacksmith in the back shifted money is from pursuing
8:11 pm
race why supremacy with a militarized to an affirmative action so the firm action hurts white people just a rhythm the president of the absence of responses to the problems we've been through his. plates the francis's of these right wing anarchists for now and twitter users are taking things into their own hands and have been revealing the identities of the charlottesville white supremacists who were involved in saturday's rally most notably the yes your race account has been publishing photos of protesters asking followers to help them identify who they are two of the first people identified were a cook at a restaurant and berkeley and a twenty year old student at the university of nevada reno the cook has since been fired from his job and the university put out a statement saying they were monitoring the situation recently citizens and public officials have been vocal lising the desire to remove confederate statues monday
8:12 pm
afternoon in durham north carolina protesters climbed a statue of a confederate soldier toppling it during an anti-racist rally citizens in lexington kentucky and gainesville florida are asking for confederate statues to be removed and just recently baltimore mayor catherine q has pledged to remove confederate monuments and the city but as many aren't happy with that pledge saying the statue shouldn't be moved but instead should be destroyed no mention to you when i was covering the k.k.k. rally i was speaking to a lot of the charlottesville residents and they were arguing that these statues a racist you know they represent bigotry and they have no place in today's society but the k.k.k. and whites of premises are arguing that by removing these statues you're removing. history you're changing history so there's like a clash when it comes to obviously the white supremacists and the counter protests and that's the case the president was making today at the press conference thanks actually appreciate it for more on this we go to luther mercer memphis tennessee
8:13 pm
advocate director for the tennessee charter school center mr mercer thanks for your time tonight i wanted to talk to you because our children are listening and they are watching and they are being influenced what does this change in education in your opinion give us your take on how this should be handled. well first of all thank you for having me on. my condolences to the family of heather higher and to all those who have suffered from injustice. tonight i think we need to take a pause we need to think about what this means in our history and then how this reflects upon where we move forward after four hundred years we've been having a conversation in this country about how we view each other we look at any quality we look at racism we look at these things and we have these intersections where there seems like a moment where we can say ok it's time to move forward is that a movement or we have
8:14 pm
a moment right now mr mercer you have got that you know what i think we're at another moment and yet we're having these ideological conversations again we're going back and forth with each other and what happens usually after the debate and after all of the emotion we go back into a default setting and i think it's a conversation now that we need to have about what are the systematic issues that are creating these problems and deal with those systematic where are the policies what about what are our institutional frameworks and luther what about the president today. you know he talked about you know history revisionism that's basically where he was going is it going to be george washington or thomas jefferson next what are your thoughts on that. well i think the president went to an extreme with this notion of where we can potentially start to a race history but i do think there's something here and i wanted those people who actually like the fact that we have reminders that history is there us to know
8:15 pm
where we've been and where we need to go and so one of my concerns is that we get into the guard about oh let's a race these things and move them out of our way and therefore once they are gone we no longer have to deal with them so my concern is not that my concern is having a dialogue a discussion but also action policy looking at the systematic issues that create this injustice and to deal with those the so did mr mercer did the president complicate things today. i think the president complicated things for himself politically because i think the president is not being sensitive to the issue that people are upset about the division the realities of this country and some of the injustice that still exists and so i think he has done damage to himself because he's not being honest he's not being straightforward with being sympathetic around how do we come together as a nation and he is one of the only people in this country right now that can do this he sits in a position of power that allows for him to have
8:16 pm
a voice and acts to speak with authority to in order to help move this conversation for luther mercer memphis advocacy director for the tennessee charter school center thank you so much for joining us tonight. thank you newly leaked e-mails from the trump campaign revealed paul manner for it was role luck to meet with representatives of the russian government and ultimately rejected the request foreign policy advisor george papadopoulos sent at least six e-mails to a man a firm offering to set up meetings with russian leaders manner for it was advised the meetings would violate u.s. sanctions on russia and the logan act forbidding private citizens of negotiating with foreign governments without authorization earlier today a spokesman for manna for it says that this proves these e-mails prove the russia investigation is fake news north korea's state television channel aired pictures of kim jong un looking through maps of guam the images show the north korean military
8:17 pm
officials briefing kim jong un on plans to fire missiles at the american territory meanwhile the citizens of guam are having mixed reactions to the threat of violence against their island artie's spoke with u.c.l.a. professor keith camacho who explained how the local citizens of guam are reacting to threats on their island i would say their reaction is mixed you have people like myself who are very. called united states government very critical of. the issues that take place take place in guam in the maryon us in asia in the pacific islands region and you have folks who are also very upset other folks feel that. nothing will come of this escalation that they feel that the tensions will subside so you have a full range of complex opinions and beliefs with regard to. u.s.
8:18 pm
north korea relations. in guam and in the region the north korean central news agency reports kim jong un might have taken his foot off the gas pedal for now party's election year old shop ski reports. the central news agency of north korea quoted the leaders saying that i quote dear supreme leader said today that the americans reckless military confrontational behavior has ended up the u.s. trapping themselves with their own hands and are spending pathetic fade by weary minutes and seconds that the dear supreme leader will watch such stupid american behavior for a bit longer the big question of course right now is whether this means that kim jong un has abandoned his plan of striking the waters near the island of guam as a show of force to the united states but again fists are flying high obviously with the head of the defense secretary mattis talking on monday in a press gaggle at the pentagon saying that the bottom line is that we will defend
8:19 pm
the country from an attack yes that means for a long of young troops they're going to be in a wartime situation you don't shoot people in this world said mattis you don't shoot at people in this world unless you want to bear the consequences and of quote but one of the most interesting quotes in this whole exchange fiery exchange between the united states and the countries in the region around north korea is actually from the south korean president who was just elected a short while ago speaking at a televised address on tuesday president and said that no one should be allowed to decide on a military action on the korean peninsula without south korean agreement our government he continued will do everything it can to prevent the war from breaking out and if we remember the president actually was elected on the platform of trying to you know have south korea more independent in its decisions from the united states and let's not forget there is also china in this whole situation with the
8:20 pm
foreign ministry of chinese issuing a statement on monday that the current situation on the korean peninsula is highly complex and sensitive we hope to see that the relevant sides extinguished through their out their words and actions this. adding fuel amid tensions we hope to see them improve mutual trust and move toward the goal of preserving peace and stability on the peninsula as well as realizing they do nuclearization of the peninsula so in a nutshell china beijing is saying here that you know all sides should cool that off and the situation should be resolved at the negotiation table rather than you know in a military matter so we will see how the situation develops but definitely it's a little less chance that it was last week with the fire and fewer comments from the president of the united states for more on this we go to former u.s. diplomat jim jeffords jim nice to have you with us to see is kim backing down what do you make of this i would necessarily put it that way look you know up until
8:21 pm
a few days ago we had all this trash talk between pyongyang and washington a lot of people were quite upset about that frankly i don't think it matters that much as jill you don't think you heard locked and loaded no i don't think i was it i think a couple things one remember we hear the news about there being a back channel in new york be directly between the united states and north korea i think president moon's statement from south korea is very welcome i think the main thing though if i had to point to anything would be the chinese statement to the effect that if the united states starts it they will not allow regime change in north korea they will not allow the north korean state to be destroyed and we if we do that we're at war with china and i think people take them seriously but if north korea starts it. he's on his own and i think i think that that sobered everybody up with secretary chiller since said that the sanctions worked is the right and no i don't think so i don't think the sanctions really amount to that much even the same ones were passed in the security council there but it made a big hullabaloo of the russians the chinese signed onto if you actually look at
8:22 pm
the details it involves a lot of things that the chinese have been doing for a very long time really nothing much change so are we seeing china having an influence by saying that if the united states were to do a preemptive strike on north korea that they would side with kim. i mean is china now dictating to the united states how we defend ourselves i wouldn't want to look at that way and i would hope that president trump and our national leadership is not looking at it that way when all is said and done korea is way over there on the other side of the pacific the chinese the russians the south koreans the japanese they're the ones that are on the front line they should be taking the lead here and it seems to me that making a lot of threats and sanctions and and so forth is it isn't going to do it for our what is intercontinental ballistic missile shortens the world a little bit i mean it it shortens the time frame i mean minutes away from getting hit if he has that gave a little maybe as a capability and something you know you saw there have been reports casting some doubt on this report about a miniature rise nuclear could put on
8:23 pm
a long road you want to take that chance who wants to take that chance and that's why if things can be called down and frankly i think the mutual freeze proposal from the chinese is a valid one the freeze their missile program we freeze or action by the chinese in that that's why don't why is that not a good deal for well it sounds like a good deal but how do we know that kim is going to stop tests and what if he continues one what's our next move what we have the option well again if the deals on the table and both sides are rejecting it we don't really know do it but if the americans are willing to say let's talk about that what's the harm and if you think the door is open to talks no i certainly hope so you know this that this thing is a roller coaster we were here before we're down here today maybe we'll be back up there again tomorrow but the president the last few days has cooled. good good i'm glad to see that again we know that he is mean to interrupt you but his your opponents or spinning say hey look the tough talk on kim worked and he's backing
8:24 pm
off he's rethinking he's looking at maps he's not pushing buttons yet of course the north koreans are coming out saying our tough talk work and all that i mean again the trash talk will continue and the question is what's going on behind the scenes toward hopefully some kind of a sane process forward jim jatra. thank you so much inc you appreciate it. you tube and its parent company google are being accused of stifling alternative viewpoints the sites are cracking down on extremist content they're also they have also removed legitimate files from journalists and opposition groups argues jacqueline vogel explains that i internet regulation is becoming ever more automated meaning the machines are now in charge of monitoring what you write and post so when you have your video taken down it's nothing personal it's just the algorithm you tube now has computers largely responsible for blocking stream of content and the company is head over heels with the cutting edge technology that makes this all possible over seventy five percent of the videos we've removed for violent
8:25 pm
extremism over the past month were taken down before receiving a single human flag. and that all sounds well and good given that in theory machines should be objective but it turns out they're not recently we've seen a number of journalists monitors and syrian opposition groups have their content blocked despite the fact that very similar videos went untouched on mainstream news channels you two pages those who are targeted say the site is purposely trying to erase certain documentation of the war i think what's so troubling about this if we look at the syrian accounts this is video chronicling a six or seven year war and some of the most important parts of that war from the perspective of syrians you tube though still has faith that its machines know best well these tools are imperfect and untried for every setting in many cases our systems have proven more accurate than humans and flag in videos that need to be removed and the video sharing website isn't alone in being found at fault google
8:26 pm
has also come under fire for showing bias that was after a number of left wing and progressive news outlets were removed from search results after new protocols were enacted by google those alternative scythe claim they've seen a drastic drop and i to be on their pages sense then yet the search engine giant says the newly adopted policy is or applied simply to help improve the quality of results we updated our research quality reader guidelines to flag upsetting user experiences including pages that present conspiracy theories unless the query clearly indicates the user is seeking an alternative viewpoint and that last little bit is a very important to take note of unless a user specific lea indicates they are interested in a quote alternative view point they will be getting that when you look at the actual application of the artificial intelligence programs what you actually see is the. common and very natural organic stupidity of
8:27 pm
silicon valley elites who are since sorious in nature and actually seek to scrub the internet of divergent opinions the journalist yasha levine actually tested google's artificial intelligence which rates certain phrases as toxic so yasha levine put in phrases for example like america is corrupt and that was rated as ninety two percent toxic meanwhile when yasha levine and heard the phrase hitler was right in everything he did it was only thirty four percent toxics so censorship continues to rear its ugly head online but where a group of experts could have been made to answer for this before there are now only machines which as we've seen aren't as unbiased as we first thought. r.t. washington d.c. . and that is our news tonight follow me on twitter at news with ed like me on the facebook page we got it done i made short reporting tonight from washington thanks for watching we'll see you back here tomorrow.
