4:01 pm
it is thursday august seventeenth four pm in washington d.c. i'm actually banks and you're watching our team america we began today with a terror attack in the spanish city of barcelona at least a dozen dead many more endured after a van a rammed into the crowd at the busiest street and the city local authorities have reportedly arrested a suspect and they have no doubts that this was a terrorist attack artie's alexy he joins us live with the details now alexey what do we know at this point well the saloon you know thora he's confirmed just a short while ago that the death toll in this attack which occurred in barcelona today on thursday has reached twelve people are being treated in hospitals across the city four different injuries a large number of those people reportedly according to local outlets have serious wounds and even the cut a lot of stories are saying that the death toll but to. may rise as doctors
4:02 pm
are fighting for the lives of those people injured seriously in this incident now we do know obviously it's an evolving situation numbers may change but what we know for sure is that this attack happened at five pm local time at one of the busiest streets in spain not just barcelona and this street just called. it's almost three and a half mile long street in barcelona the biggest tourist attraction and at the moment according to eyewitnesses the street was packed with hundreds of people now also it's reported that. rented and rammed into the crowd and basically drove for almost half a mile into the street so you would understand the scope of how terrible this attack was it was swerving from side to side eyewitnesses also reported that there were a lot of bodies on the ground and mayhem was genuine it was a lot of people who were scattering across the street but again we know now that
4:03 pm
twelve people have been killed as a result of this attack we also know from the authorities that they have arrested at least one suspect there may have been more there are unconfirmed reports that in total there were three people engaged in this attack and they've already released a photo of the suspect it is believed that his passport was found in the van and his name was dressed. or he is believed to be a spanish citizen of moroccan origin and we yet to have any confirmation from the authorities whether there were any other suspects. arrested or some of them may be at large but obviously we will try to keep of you was up to date with all the latest details by our next bulletin alexy in this isn't the first attack over the last year is that correct absolutely if we go just a year ago the fourteenth of july the steel day in france there was a very similar type of attack a very soft target type of. when
4:04 pm
a. truck story rammed into the crowd in nice in the south of the resort city of knees killing eighty six people and obviously just a short while ago just this summer we witnessed two separate attacks in london and manchester during the ariana grande concert and also on a friday night in london also a lot of people had been killed and when it comes to spain itself well we can say that spain has not been the primary target of terror in the last decade or so but obviously the two thousand and four madrid subway bombings was one of the biggest attacks in europe at the time a hundred and ninety two people were killed but when it comes to barcelona this is the first attack of such kind and obviously raises a lot of eyebrows because spain as a nation as a country is not really involved in the middle east and it's hard to tell what you know that would say allegation and the attack could be done for but we do know at this point that one affiliate of the state. has claimed responsibility for this
4:05 pm
attack describing the people who orchestrated this attack in barcelona as soldiers but obviously we need to confirmation that as well that news thank you so much alexey for that report that was our correspondent alexey. let's bring in now former m i five agent in an e-mail. and he thanks so much for joining us today. first off i want to simply say what do you make of what has happened in barcelona today. i know it's one of the costs and it's unfolding in a christian or less. performed and she lives in oregon and they're still. it's easy to work the phones hard to find work when you can see. it. it's very low tech. that's a good question and something that it's very difficult and stressful and. it's
4:06 pm
very. hard to keep it in. the very least. the patient. is the. same itself there have long been it. would be a box that he didn't. even think that you can take it that you had to take it with a book that had been missing for. all to see if. you can. get it because. the financial close to tears. if we put it. on the beginning of a week that people hate to be near him. and he can you tell us all why it's being terrorists the speed of the soft target.
4:07 pm
oh here it is for jesus christ. and then situation for all of the missing while certainly because that's how it's. all actually playing because that will probably take it said that in the early takes a. little subtle a situation where i will say for the signal. for all of the full moon was. what if he was the top poster in the world that there should be. on. the phone in the world that. he will instantly pull all. nighters transit through the full day on the phone and more than sixteen that seems to be so long. that it's slow even the rules of the book
4:08 pm
seem. a little tough to. thank you so much and he thank you for your time we're going to have to leave it there that was former m i five age an ammunition on. back in the u.s. as debates continue to heat up over whether or not confederate statue should stay or be removed others are in mourning remembering the three lives that were lost saturday artie's natasha suite has more on how these three are being remembered. thousands came together last night gathering at the university everything the campus in charlottesville for a candlelight vigil against hate and violence. singing amazing grace to me placed her candles around the statue of thomas jefferson the third us president and founder of the university groups also marched around campus observe a moment of silence for thirty two year old heather higher and state troopers burke bates and lieutenant j.
4:09 pm
colin bates and colin were monitoring the rally in a helicopter saturday and died when it crashed here you can see virginia state police put out this photo of roses in remembrance of the two shortly after the crash and the two men were very much loved by the community here you see a photo from the richmond general's youth hockey honoring trooper pilot bates who was the coach for the team and his brother craig says bates knew as a toddler that he wanted to serve and protect and misses him every day. it's hard to just. i was going to be able to text which was which was a really sort of. bates died just one day before his forty first birthday and he leaves behind a wife and twins a boy or girl his funeral is scheduled for friday in richmond colleagues recall forty eight year old colin as quote a wonderful guy who always had a smile colin was a graduate of the university of virginia leadership program for police and
4:10 pm
sheriff's and he was the highest rank for a pilot with twenty three years of service a pilot for a current virginia governor terry mcauliffe cohen was in charge of the state police unit he was also an avid mountain biker behind his wife karen two sons ryan and max bailey parents and brothers his funeral is scheduled for saturday in chesterfield virginia virginia state police association is accepting donations to support the families of bates and colin a funeral was held wednesday for thirty two year old heather higher open to the public and everyone more purple her favorite color the man being accused of killing higher has his next hearing set for august twenty fifth in washington to talk to sweets. but charlottesville police department is facing a lot of criticism for the way it handled the deadly protests over the weekend that left one dead and several others endured many people are up in arms saying charlottesville police did not do enough to protect to protect protesters from
4:11 pm
white national west white supremacist neo nazis and the ku klux klan however charlottesville police chief thomas said he regrets the loss of life and despite the violence that unfolded he stands by his department's response joining me now to discuss this further is it time to edward disaster response training and security expert and executive director of the international preparedness network thank you so much for joining us time now many protesters say there was a police presence but it appeared officers were not intervening and it appeared they were on the side of the all right i want you to take a listen to. one troll is still resident had to say we were on that front line yesterday. when the. story. and tell people yesterday was oh they stood by and then this car comes up i'm day oh. those people. are going to
4:12 pm
see these people fly in the air and hotel magnate. my son went this crew that's crimes from getting hit yesterday and i have it now i don't go and so these people have a mechanism that neighborhood thinks are violent and police people and. so you tell me who the police are you know you go through they are called a time now many people are upset that it appears the police weren't looking out for them what's your response to that. oh my response is that i don't know if it was a mistake in judgment in terms on the response by the police in dealing with the situation at hand was it a judgment call that they believed that they could step back in and kind of allow these folks to diffuse their anger with the protest i don't know but i can tell you
4:13 pm
this much that they're supposed to be there to deescalate a situation and protect the population and in this case where the unfortunate circumstances that produced the death of mrs higher is something that i believe could have been prevented and i believe that the police are culpable for that because they are very to prevent things like that from happening and they didn't do it and there's no excuse for it especially something that was so evident where the car accelerated to such a high speed crashing into crowds and no police available to even respond immediately to when the car started to back up and away from the crowd and also i want to say that i heard on another network where. we had dr cornel west the night before when you had the tiki torches group that were marching up and down and shouting you know we will not replace jews will not replace us and dr cornell west and and some other protesters that were holed up inside of a church and they were protected by a group called on to far that were protecting them from being attacked by this
4:14 pm
group now the police are supposed to be doing that and i want to know where were the police and the response we're were they when the people needed them so this is obviously you know i don't accept the fact that this was something as a mistake this is something that they were supposed to do and they didn't do it the way it was supposed to do it and a time like many people they've been asking the question where were the police and the police chief al thomas he said that of course the police were there to try to enter dean but at the moment that everything got out of hand is that the officers were going and putting on their riot gear now is this an excuse that's ridiculous that's absurd that's that's patently absurd you're supposed to first of all they knew that this was happening they knew that there were many many people coming from different parts of the country and these were provoking of groups these are white supremacists these are neo nazis these are not boy scouts these are not these are people who mean to provoke people who mean to do harm so you're looking for as you're looking at
4:15 pm
a situation that could easily get out of hand now if you saying that he was not ready for this situation and that he was or the police were preparing their riot gear or preparing to doff their riot gear it's ridiculous this is something that you have to be prepared for the day that it happens so these excuses just don't wash and we're going to have to look at this and we're going to have to look at what we're going to do because they're going to be other far right protesters supposed to be one of boston is going to be what in texas and what are the police going to do are they going to stand by and watch this thing blow up like it did down in charlottesville or are they going to be prepared for it or offer excuses for the next set of casualties that by the. way a number of people from these neo nazi groups and from these white supremacist groups have stated that their goal is to provoke violence so if the police know this and they knew this from the beginning what's the excuse for not being there to protect the people and the protect people like heather higher and other demonstrators who depended on them for their personal safety and now it's
4:16 pm
a great question like you mentioned there are going to be more of these rallies the k.k.k. and the all right they are gearing up for more of these rallies governor terry mcauliffe in virginia he mentioned that is that the state had wasn't prepared for this rally but the police chief thomas said that they were and he standing by what they what i want to know when you say we weren't prepared how can you not be prepared for neo nazis you know what they are you know what they do and you're saying that you're not prepared especially with america's history of these right wing groups we've had the timothy mcveigh's we've had people like william j. crew are this is a person who kept sodium cyanide in a storage facility to use on populations of color this is the history of america so when you fully well know what these groups are and what they do to say that you're not prepared is not enough or is it that he wants the public to take matters into
4:17 pm
their own hands and to protect themselves from the next situation that arises is this where we've what we've arrived to so we've got to ask ourselves these questions what is law enforcement going to do for the next situations that arise as it has been stated by a number of people on the right that they're looking to provoke violence what does law enforcement have prepared for the next to situations that is going to prevent the death of the senseless death the senseless murder of a person like heather higher or even the confusion that produced the deaths of the . fortunate state troopers who died the helicopter crash so we've got to look at these situations and we've got to provide answers for the people because we cannot afford to produce more casualties and i want to get your opinion on this and then which took place on saturday an african-american man he was being beaten by a white supremacist with polls during saturday's protests he was
4:18 pm
a right next to the city police station now the victim has been identified as twenty one year old very harris who says police fail to help him now if this is true why do you think probably if a dentist intervene i have i have no explanations i saw the videotape of the young man being beaten broke my heart as i have a son i have a teenage son and i can look at that and i could see how i would feel to watch my son being attacked by a mob of cowards in the way that he was and for the but for the police to stand by and then again to make the excuse that well we didn't know we weren't prepared what we it doesn't it does not wash so it's either that this was a deliberate choice or this was complete incompetence what was it i can't tell you all i know is that what i want to know is what do they have planned what does law enforcement have planned next for the next series of demonstrations from the right
4:19 pm
that we're going to see over the course of the next few months and tell me how about up there i guess i can for left and i have one final question for you should the white nationalist white supremacists these neo nazi the k.k.k. should they be considered terrorists given their history and what we saw last week and are they not a threat to said it is that they're not risk not about being considered terrorists they are terrorists that would that's what they've always have been and since the since they've existed this always been terrorism in the united states have existed as a terrorist state that the genocide of the native americans and the enslavement of bass perkins and the exploitation of all of the different foreigners that came into the united states to build it what it is the. these are the groups that preyed upon them they have always been terrorist will always be terrorists and we have to prepare for the reality of their rise and law enforcement supposed to be the tip of the spear to protect the civilian population against them and if they're not up to it then by god it is time for the citizens to do what they need to do to protect themselves from this domestic terrorist threat thank you so much and tom for your

time that was anton ad words disaster response training and security expert and executive director of the international preparedness network thank you so much thank you the university of florida is denying a request from a group led by white nationalists richard spencer to rent campus space for an event next month according to a statement released by the president of the university the decision was based off an assessment of quote potential risk with campus community state and federal law enforcement officials following the violent clashes and trial it's felt he added the first amendment does not require a public institution to risk imminent violence to students and others meanwhile a white lives matter rally scheduled for september eleventh at texas a and m. university has been counseled over safety concerns the university announced the council lation on monday and the wake of these decisions organizers vowed to pursue a legal recourse against the school's. and new updates to the rim our league graham

4:25 pm
are stories that you know we're going to. have to hold very. well. and then if you rants and c.n.n.'s jake tapper over the years and in them i always try to make sure to give the man a little credit because he's not the dumbest tool in the mainstream shet i know because i've worked in news for about ten years now every day and over the years i've seen tapper do some really solid reporting both tapper and i were working in news all throughout the obama presidency back when the entire country stopped paid attention like. literally no one i knew in my real life outside my professional one had any idea what a secretary of state even did let alone who the attorney general worth for eight
4:26 pm
years everyone stopped paying attention but i didn't because it was my job to pay attention and it was also tappers job so he was there right there with me while everyone else went to sleep and now he's basically admitted that as a member of the mainstream media like a key player he actually helped everyone go to sleep and stop paying attention because he just told rolling stone magazine that is supposed to be about rock and roll not politics that president obama said things that weren't true and got away with it more for a variety of reasons and one is the media was much more supportive of him being go thank you tapper of course he tried to make it sound like he was super critical of obama and he did do some coverage that took our president to task but the reality is tapper was complicit and being more supportive of obama then he was of say bush before
4:27 pm
a trump after temper himself actually backed me up on that as their stand when he was talking at south by southwest festival that was also supposed to be about rock n roll and that politics and during that p.r. outing tapper said to be completely candid i did in fact checks about barack obama too not at the same rate so he admitted it and then of course he goes on to say that he didn't feel the need to fact check obama even though he lied as much as any politician he doesn't say exactly why but the gist of it seems to be tapper liked obama more and felt like he was lying for the right reasons and generally agreed with him more than the republican presidents he's covered before so there it is one of c.n.n.'s most prominent journalists admitted that he let obama skate and a lot of things even though he knew him to be lying and worse he stands by. that thinking it's ok it's too bad he doesn't seem to realize as smart as the it is that
4:28 pm
had he actually taken obama to task as he did everyone else hillary might actually have one. it's. called the feeling hopeless nearly. every the world should experience. and you'll get the old the old. the old according to just. come along for the ride.
