it is thursday august seventeenth four pm in washington d.c. i'm actually banks and you're watching our team america we began today with a terror attack in the spanish city of barcelona at least a dozen dead many more endured after a van a rammed into the crowd at the busiest street and the city local authorities have reportedly arrested a suspect and they have no doubts that this was a terrorist attack artie's alexy he joins us live with the details now alexey what do we know at this point well the saloon you know thora he's confirmed just a short while ago that the death toll in this attack which occurred in barcelona today on thursday has reached twelve people are being treated in hospitals across the city four different injuries a large number of those people reportedly according to local outlets have serious wounds and even the cut a lot of stories are saying that the death toll but to. may rise as doctors

are fighting for the lives of those people injured seriously in this incident now we do know obviously it's an evolving situation numbers may change but what we know for sure is that this attack happened at five pm local time at one of the busiest streets in spain not just barcelona and this street just called. it's almost three and a half mile long street in barcelona the biggest tourist attraction and at the moment according to eyewitnesses the street was packed with hundreds of people now also it's reported that. rented and rammed into the crowd and basically drove for almost half a mile into the street so you would understand the scope of how terrible this attack was it was swerving from side to side eyewitnesses also reported that there were a lot of bodies on the ground and mayhem was genuine it was a lot of people who were scattering across the street but again we know now that

twelve people have been killed as a result of this attack we also know from the authorities that they have arrested at least one suspect there may have been more there are unconfirmed reports that in total there were three people engaged in this attack and they've already released a photo of the suspect it is believed that his passport was found in the van and his name was dressed. or he is believed to be a spanish citizen of moroccan origin and we yet to have any confirmation from the authorities whether there were any other suspects. arrested or some of them may be at large but obviously we will try to keep of you was up to date with all the latest details by our next bulletin alexy in this isn't the first attack over the last year is that correct absolutely if we go just a year ago the fourteenth of july the steel day in france there was a very similar type of attack a very soft target type of. when

a. truck story rammed into the crowd in nice in the south of the resort city of knees killing eighty six people and obviously just a short while ago just this summer we witnessed two separate attacks in london and manchester during the ariana grande concert and also on a friday night in london also a lot of people had been killed and when it comes to spain itself well we can say that spain has not been the primary target of terror in the last decade or so but obviously the two thousand and four madrid subway bombings was one of the biggest attacks in europe at the time a hundred and ninety two people were killed but when it comes to barcelona this is the first attack of such kind and obviously raises a lot of eyebrows because spain as a nation as a country is not really involved in the middle east and it's hard to tell what you know that would say allegation and the attack could be done for but we do know at this point that one affiliate of the state. has claimed responsibility for this

this much that they're supposed to be there to deescalate a situation and protect the population and in this case where the unfortunate circumstances that produced the death of mrs higher is something that i believe could have been prevented and i believe that the police are culpable for that because they are very to prevent things like that from happening and they didn't do it and there's no excuse for it especially something that was so evident where the car accelerated to such a high speed crashing into crowds and no police available to even respond immediately to when the car started to back up and away from the crowd and also i want to say that i heard on another network where. we had dr cornel west the night before when you had the tiki torches group that were marching up and down and shouting you know we will not replace jews will not replace us and dr cornell west and and some other protesters that were holed up inside of a church and they were protected by a group called on to far that were protecting them from being attacked by this

group now the police are supposed to be doing that and i want to know where were the police and the response we're were they when the people needed them so this is obviously you know i don't accept the fact that this was something as a mistake this is something that they were supposed to do and they didn't do it the way it was supposed to do it and a time like many people they've been asking the question where were the police and the police chief al thomas he said that of course the police were there to try to enter dean but at the moment that everything got out of hand is that the officers were going and putting on their riot gear now is this an excuse that's ridiculous that's absurd that's that's patently absurd you're supposed to first of all they knew that this was happening they knew that there were many many people coming from different parts of the country and these were provoking of groups these are white supremacists these are neo nazis these are not boy scouts these are not these are people who mean to provoke people who mean to do harm so you're looking for as you're looking at

a situation that could easily get out of hand now if you saying that he was not ready for this situation and that he was or the police were preparing their riot gear or preparing to doff their riot gear it's ridiculous this is something that you have to be prepared for the day that it happens so these excuses just don't wash and we're going to have to look at this and we're going to have to look at what we're going to do because they're going to be other far right protesters supposed to be one of boston is going to be what in texas and what are the police going to do are they going to stand by and watch this thing blow up like it did down in charlottesville or are they going to be prepared for it or offer excuses for the next set of casualties that by the. way a number of people from these neo nazi groups and from these white supremacist groups have stated that their goal is to provoke violence so if the police know this and they knew this from the beginning what's the excuse for not being there to protect the people and the protect people like heather higher and other demonstrators who depended on them for their personal safety and now it's

a great question like you mentioned there are going to be more of these rallies the k.k.k. and the all right they are gearing up for more of these rallies governor terry mcauliffe in virginia he mentioned that is that the state had wasn't prepared for this rally but the police chief thomas said that they were and he standing by what they what i want to know when you say we weren't prepared how can you not be prepared for neo nazis you know what they are you know what they do and you're saying that you're not prepared especially with america's history of these right wing groups we've had the timothy mcveigh's we've had people like william j. crew are this is a person who kept sodium cyanide in a storage facility to use on populations of color this is the history of america so when you fully well know what these groups are and what they do to say that you're not prepared is not enough or is it that he wants the public to take matters into

their own hands and to protect themselves from the next situation that arises is this where we've what we've arrived to so we've got to ask ourselves these questions what is law enforcement going to do for the next situations that arise as it has been stated by a number of people on the right that they're looking to provoke violence what does law enforcement have prepared for the next to situations that is going to prevent the death of the senseless death the senseless murder of a person like heather higher or even the confusion that produced the deaths of the . fortunate state troopers who died the helicopter crash so we've got to look at these situations and we've got to provide answers for the people because we cannot afford to produce more casualties and i want to get your opinion on this and then which took place on saturday an african-american man he was being beaten by a white supremacist with polls during saturday's protests he was

a right next to the city police station now the victim has been identified as twenty one year old very harris who says police fail to help him now if this is true why do you think probably if a dentist intervene i have i have no explanations i saw the videotape of the young man being beaten broke my heart as i have a son i have a teenage son and i can look at that and i could see how i would feel to watch my son being attacked by a mob of cowards in the way that he was and for the but for the police to stand by and then again to make the excuse that well we didn't know we weren't prepared what we it doesn't it does not wash so it's either that this was a deliberate choice or this was complete incompetence what was it i can't tell you all i know is that what i want to know is what do they have planned what does law enforcement have planned next for the next series of demonstrations from the right
