good evening we start tonight with the terror attack in barcelona the attack left at least thirteen dead and over one hundred people injured after a van rammed into a crowded barcelona's busiest street last run less prominent but the incident is being investigated as a terror attack isis is already claiming responsibility the attack comes after a house explosion which claimed a single life now being linked to today's terror attacks natalie don back has all the details. everyone still a bit on hold trying to hear more about the attackers and you know trying to just hear if there's only one or two of them that have been taken in by the catalan police now but yeah everyone still really waiting to hear more it seems like the police control is easing a bit for about one hundred meters from last that i'm just here. you know not barcelona and you can see that the police is sort of just removing the tape here

around me so hopefully people are going to be able to get back to their hotels and to the homes that are close to this area i have spoken to a lot of people just around this plaza here that is pretty close to where everything happened and you can see a lot of families with small children and everyone sort of like waiting to be able to pass through some of them have hotels on plus look at the lumia and around the area. but they're still waiting for the story of let them proceed to their hotels and really just move on with their vacations and earlier we heard from the president of catalonia he says the attack on barcelona comes as an unexpected blow . we are saddened like europe and the rest of the world we know that people of all civilizations religion and social backgrounds stand with the victims and with over this act of violence that's what our capital london brussels paris and other european. since had this experience and now what has happened to barcelona joining

me now to discuss the attack is foreign policy expert and principal at trilogy advisors johnston leidy's john good to have you with us today let's talk about this isis is claiming responsibility for this attack it's too early yet to confirm whether or not this is true we know that isis likes to claim responsibility for violence that garners a lot of media attention around the world if this is indeed a lone wolf attack what if anything can authorities do to protect civilians from this style of attack unfortunately manila there's nothing that can be done for one hundred percent security at least not until this long war against radical islamist wahhabi islam is going to be defeated but in the meantime we need to see very relentless and aggressive counter terrorism as we've seen by the spanish authorities and i think they deserve due credit the last time there was a major terror attack in spain was dimmock dritte atrocity one hundred ninety two

people killed on the trains there thirteen years ago and there are now about three thousand spanish officials pursuing about one thousand to twelve hundred suspects tapping about five hundred telephones in spain doing the best they can and working with muslim community leaders in barcelona and caroline governments in europe and very importantly the moroccan government on counterintelligence now you know what i'm noticing in the last several days lone wolf attacks they've been carried out using rental cars rental trucks these big box trucks like we saw last year in france we can we can think way back to the first world trade tower attempted bombing right in the ninety's that was a rented box truck this trend among lone wolves it's rental cars do you think there's there's a need to be more extensive in screening perhaps are we going to see that happen with with rental cars and this sort of is this sort of in our future that it's sort of brilliantly evil tact. by islamic state and encouraging people who really need

no type of skills with firearms or explosives you simply know how you need to know how to drive a car and you need to be evil enough to drive into a large crowd of people four meters or hundreds of meters or whatnot and i think we need to be very careful about how we balance out as i said before a very relentless counterterrorism offensive by authorities and working together with muslim community leaders without infringing on privacy and security issues that allow us to thrive and prosper in western society i mean all it took was the one shoe bomber for it to change the t.s.a. here in the united states right i mean is this what we're do you think that this kind of fear among the the chain reaction we're seeing all across europe with these rented cars i mean do you think that might happen here but i think there's going to be a way to try and do better screening again without interrupting commercial relations between businesses businesses and consumers and of course to global economy we can't now have

a system that you serves to kind of freedom and openness that is allowed for prosperity to be shared throughout the world at the same time it's really a thing going to be more a matter of going after individuals social media networks again intelligence sharing with community leaders with government officials but an absolutely relentless approach to this and never letting terrorists think that governments are societies so letting up or simply surrender one more targeted approach i don't like and relentlessly so and as as i mentioned earlier isis likes to immediately claim involvement in seemingly every violent event that happens around the world is this some sort of tactic among terror groups to sort of make themselves appear on the present bigger bigger than they actually are absolutely no no you had this one right on the head of what it comes down to is a recruiting tool especially when the so-called caliphate is about to be extinguished in syria and iraq but the danger is that we're going to see i think more of these types of attacks in europe you have high. perhaps thousands of

european union citizens who have traveled to syria and iraq have become battle hardened and now want to take back their radicalization to europe and we're now seeing it also in south asia and as far east as the philippines so this is going to be a global phenomenon we're going to be dealing with these situations these atrocities unfortunately but i think all we can do is always be ready to strike back as hard as we can against the enemy and last but not least for the viewers how is it possible to keep yourself you and your family safe from something like this isn't even possible to do that one hundred percent know it simply because we just got to keep our eyes and ears open when we're out on the street we have to work together as societies and with governments and trust officials to provide the greatest security they can walk providing the greatest freedom for individuals all right thank you so much for sharing your expertise with us john siddle edis. president trump is facing serious backlash for blaming both sides as he calls it

for the violence that occurred in charlottesville over the weekend and the comments led to the dissolution of the president's manufacturing and business councils now here to discuss what this means for the president is former u.s. trade commissioner bart chilton part good of you to be with us tonight thanks for being here you're good to see you so this is really something right these types of advisory councils we know they don't actually physically do too much but they do serve an important relationship well that's right absolutely i mean they're sort of like presidential potted plants or photo ops and it's good it's sort of a deal that they make the c.e.o.'s make with the president they look good being in close proximity the president the president looks good you know thoughtfully listening to the you. by the same token relationships is key and there are times when a president might call upon them to try and push legislation on the hill but unfortunately because of the remarks rick. reading charleville neo nazis this business council is

now could put they were dissolving themselves and then the president tweeted that he's dissolving them sort of like saying i quit before you're fired. and radically yes ironically but it's really a shameful and i think sort of smarmy way for the president to have handled it these c.e.o.'s where they're trying to contribute to the country in the dialogue unfortunately i think the economic agenda is going to be hurt tell the corporate c.e.o.'s are usually pretty risk averse i mean that they're in charge of these huge corporations but that's what they do they don't typically take political or partisan positions so coming out in protest of the president is kind of a precedent setting kind of a big deal at the same time politicians on the other side of this they're risk averse because they don't want to risk losing votes in the next election the next write off and in recent days politicians have reiterated positions in opposition to

the racism but if you have actually criticized the president by name how do you think this will impact the politics for republicans and for the president specially the ones running next year well you're absolutely right there's only been a handful who really called him out by name mccain senator graham and the governor casey billy interrupt late the jeff flake also from arizona but the others in particular you know house speaker ryan and majority leader in the senate mitch mcconnell have only talked in sort of platitudes about oh racism is bad or anti-semitism is bad there's a quote that i was reminded of the other day by dante which is that the darkest places in hell are reserved for those who claim neutrality in times of moral crisis and this really is i think a time to stand up and it could have long reverberating implications for not just policy which i think was sort of having going to have some big. trouble but also

the politics on that note of policy the proposal that the administration has has put forth thus far this is got all this drama has got to make it much more difficult to get things through congress right what's the policy prognosis for things like tax reform infrastructure that's what we're supposed to be paying attention to this week let alone the must pass stuff like appropriations bills well the president clearly steps on his own message i mean these remarks that he made about there are good people on both sides including you know the neo nazis and the k.k.k. was made when he was supposed to be talking about this trillion dollar infrastructure proposal but nobody seems to know what it is i do not much by the way but yes he is going to have a tougher and tougher time getting these important things through like tax reform infrastructure that really could fuel inject the economic engine of our democracy so he's not just stepping on his own political message he's stepping on his policy message that really impacts the country it impacts our economic growth and jobs and

that's just a shame for him it's a shame for the nation and now on growth markets have been on a tear we've seen record highs week to week after week after week since the elections in november what impact if any do you do you see on markets in light of this charlottesville tragedy and the president's latest from our i think there is sort of a bubble licious euphoria there it's been going on markets have reached all these highs as you say monella but today they took a turn largest loss in three months two hundred seventy points on the dow jones industrial average that's one point two percent down to twenty one seven fifty that's a big deal the first time in three months it's taken such a large loss and all the other markets took a little bit of a loss to this may be sort of a turning point where not just the c.e.o.'s but the rest of the market the speculative interest there say look none of these things that we planned on having liked. actually form an infrastructure are actually going to come to fruition any

time soon there still is some good numbers out there on growth and corporate profits that will buoy the economy somewhat i don't think we're going to heck in a handbasket but i do think some of the air hot air on president's part in some regards is going to start seeping out of what i do refer to as a bubble issue for you here in markets now one of one final thing for you you have worked on several administrations for a cabinet do you see any of the top officials in the trump administration resigning over this because the other day we saw treasury secretary minucci. transportation secretary elaine chao gary cohn the director of the national economic council they stood right there next to him as the president made these outlandish remarks what do you expect to come from them well i mean it's a really tough personal decision and it may impact them directly i mean their their policy portfolio not the fact that you know we've got asian american and jewish individuals that are sitting right there listening to this malarkey but i sorta

they're mincing no words calling what happened charlottesville an act of terrorism yet we have president trump tweeting about barcelona calling this a terror attack seemingly without without any question at all before any investigation can be even performed so gentlemen i ask of you what is the difference between a car plowing down pedestrians and barcelona and a car plowing down protesters in charlottesville why is one a terror attack that protests will call out and not the other brad to you first on this right i want you to respond afterwards. yes there is no difference what occurred in charlottesville as a whole was an act of terrorism you have a group of white supremacists who with into a college town in order to intimidate scare and ultimately make a political statement with the threat of violence that is the definition of a terror attack and i want to actually i've never actually think in my entire

career have applauded people like tim scott and cruz and lindsey graham for their very principled statements the truth is that something very drastic happened this week and now we're in a situation where there are two americas there are not cease and then there are those who are going to oppose nazis and those gentlemen took a great stand in opposing naziism this week ryanair response. yeah i don't think that all the information is out yet i mean president trump said you can call the attack in charlottesville a terrorist attack certainly the justice department is looking at it as a civil rights abuse and we'll see where it goes in very very well made terrorist attack i actually and certainly a question i just finish my point really is can i finish my point yet. as far as the attack in barcelona so far the president of spain the governor of catalonia

have all sat there instead of the mayor of barcelona has sat there and said it is a terrorist attack. so i think that that's technical technical difference as far as what happens while goes on how the people are affected i think there is no difference it's a good hour it took an hour for the president to call what happened in barcelona a terror attack and it's been four days since his his allies in the all right and. nazis killed someone on the streets of our of one of our cities in virginia and he hasn't said anything he said. four days to collect all the information he's the president of the united states he's the head of the entire intelligence apparatus of the entire government he has enough time to come up with the information and i'm pretty sure that right now if me with as little information as i have called a terrorist attack the president called a terrorist attack well i guess you are listen to the president's words than when he did said there and say if you can call it

a terrorist attack that's exactly as he said is and you can call this a terrorist you don't know why i say that les carlyon terrorist attack. what is a sig a really given the initials are you can call it a bird he literally did he said you can call it a dark then you can deploy this narrative to tell he's not calling it a terrorist attack he has it literally yes it is if that isn't the word i got to get in there guys i gotta get in there he definitely did not say come out outright and call it a terror attack but he he did say you can but that those are two very different things it's not some antics there are two very different things but let's let's move this along guys ryan i want to stay with you for this next question there are people who call these white supremacist groups terror organizations that'll put them on par with for example isis should groups like the k.k.k. be banned in the us. i don't think speech should be banned in the u.s. and i think that if you have intend to do harm certainly than that that speech to

promote promotes action to do harm should be banned and that is scream fire in a crowded theater and i don't believe the calling any kind of speech that is ugly or disagreeable calling for that being banned as a safe thing i don't i don't agree with that at all brad brad hold that thought i know you're chomping at the vet there. on the flip side to this some on the other side on the right might argue that groups like black lives matter or anti for that they're also terror organizations what's the difference between all of these groups and what banning groups on any topic kind of a slippery slope to the infringement of first amendment rights to freedom of speech no no my grandpa punched nazis in germany during world war two does that make him a terrorist we have in this country said that naziism white supremacy is no is hate speech it is not permissible in america for that to happen that is the difference here what is taking place here is
