in the russian capital thanks for joining us on our. top story today a total disaster that's how donald trump described the u.s. military campaign in afghanistan during the election he pledged to pull american troops out now he's announced a complete reversal of those plans and instead of getting out he's expanding what's already there. this destructive cycle of intervention and chaos must finally folks come to an end we will also expand authority for american armed forces to target the terrorist and criminal networks trump had previously been hugely critical of obama's approach to afghanistan for instance he said washington should halt its financial support to the country it was time for american soldiers
5:02 am
to come home he said a speedy withdrawal would be the right thing to do let's take a look now at what he proposed yesterday the u.s. president gave no deadlines for any withdrawal saying u.s. troops will fight to win regardless of how long it will take when it came to additional troops there was no talk of numbers although his administration has previously hinted at a boost and more nato allies that are welcome to join the club. we will ask our nato allies and global partners to support our new strategy with additional troop and funding increases in line with our own we are confident they will nato chief has already welcomed trump's new strategy but some feel trouble achieved nothing more than his predecessors that. sixteen years and counting the afghan war continues to rage with no end in sight. over a trillion dollars said to have been pumped into this war including eighty billion
5:03 am
on the notoriously unreliable afghan forces there are over eight thousand u.s. soldiers in the country. trumps previous sets of barack obama's troop numbers there from a peak of nearly one hundred thousand obama campaigned on a promise to bring american troops home and repeatedly said he does not support the idea of quote endless war but we've heard pretty much the same from donald trump as world good will and the policy of intervention and as he puts it must come to an end we will destroy radical islamic terrorists took over a mess and we're going to. make it a lot less messy putting to some reports the taliban are in control of between ten and forty percent of the country out of four hundred districts the taliban forty eight three more than in june. a major change in u.s. military strategy in afghanistan in terms of what a shake up in donald trump's in
5:04 am
a circle his controversial chief strategist the biden was the latest to head through the exit doors and it's kind of more pain reports the president's foreign policy decisions with his new team while surprised the very people who voted him into the oval office so you want to be an american president what gets you aleck to is it pledges of more wars or the opposite we've been moving from one reckless intervention to another kid in libya syria iraq iran this destructive cycle bad decisions we cannot be a policeman of the world polls show that promises of peace were key for trump voters more than half of americans said they would prefer that the next president curb u.s. involvement in military conflicts and trump isn't the only president to have gotten the job writing hopes of peace but as we confront a vicious adversary that abides by no rules. i believe the united states of america
5:05 am
must remain a standard bearer in the conduct of war. that is what makes us different from those whom we fight you got it they even gave obama the nobel peace prize preemptively but by the time he left office he had droned bombed and intervened even more than his predecessor many hoped that the donald would make a difference however it looks like he may be set on a similar track with words of love being replaced by war and i don't ordered a targeted new jersey story or if you can see who we are sending an armada very powerful we have submarines very powerful we have many options for venezuela including a possible military option north korea. not make it work threats to the united states. they will be met with fire and fury. life the world has never see but thinking out of policy is pretty far from
5:06 am
a one man job here are some of the people who helped think out and develop trump strategy you know the one that got him elected well they're all gone except for one meanwhile the white house routinely invites people who have a pretty clear interest for wars to go on people voted for trump because they knew hillary clinton was a warmonger and that she had wanted to destabilize the middle east as she did with libya the people in charge of the white house are now jared kushner trump gary gary cohen h.r. mcmaster paul deuce are all very pro-war people and those are trumps close advisors i think that most people who support trump hope they keep to his promises but they do recognize that all of his closest advisors are now opposed to the agenda that got trampled elected yes the new team trump isn't exactly made up of peace mongers. and it's pretty far from the vision that americans voted for. r t
5:07 am
new york let's get back to our top story truck releases new u.s. strategy in afghanistan but doesn't your figures on troop expansion discuss this with mohammad marandi from the university of tehran is joining us today so good to have you with us as always now trump was always critical of obama's approach to afghanistan do you believe his strategy is any different. i think i guess having a bit of trouble hearing us we're going to try to figure out those technical issues and get back to you as soon as we can. all critics claim trumps uses major speech on afghanistan as that was controlled from his previous remarks about deadly violence in charlottesville last weekend he's issued a call for unity after he came under fire for his alleged reluctance to single out
5:08 am
the role of white supremacists in the clashes divisions in us society resulted in confrontations over the weekend between groups on the right and on the left. how do you think you know made up that it was that. was. who was. likely. to be. one of the sides has upped the ante by launching a petition on the white house website calling for it to be declared a terrorist organization more than two hundred thousand people have signed in five days and now the administration has to issue a response. looks at how the opposing sides have turned divisions into a tool for political gain political tensions are reaching new heights in america and both sides of the divide the left and the right are trying to paint the other's
5:09 am
most radical violent elements as being the true face of their whole movement. politicians are happy to pour gasoline on the flames as well trump has made it clear with bannon gorka in the white house and the klan in the streets it is now the white supremacists house hyperball that vitriol from the left has spurred threats amount action without historical parallel but violent extremism within political groups is far from a new thing for the us except earlier they didn't appear as tools in a political debate take timothy mcveigh a white supremacist who actually blew up a federal building twenty two years ago killing one hundred sixty eight people at the time politicians draw a line between his political leanings and his actions motive to me of course is irrelevant no political motive is worth the life of a child or an innocent human being so this appears to be
5:10 am
a domestic terrorist act but that sentiment of motive being irrelevant is suddenly no more nowadays after the recent. no not the attack in virginia both motive and blame were placed at the feet of president trump by the mayor of charlottesville he should look in the mirror and he made a choice in his presidential campaign the folks around with them to you know go right to the gutter to play on our worst prejudices and i think you are seeing a direct line from what happened here this weekend to those choices the same goes for the other side in one thousand nine hundred nine some forty thousand anti-globalization the city of seattle into a battleground or protesting a world trade organization conference. right by what some may today branded the left were exactly used by the right to make a political statement this was the reaction and that we really never saw any of the excitement that was going on in the streets and i think frankly much of the media
5:11 am
focus and attention on what was going on on the streets stemmed from the fact that most of the serious meetings were going on behind closed doors a similar left leaning crowd wreaked havoc in berkeley earlier this year and scale it failed to match samples events and the political outrage had a very clear target with the president timing and as well. if you see berkeley does not allow free speech impressions does violence on innocent people with a different point of view no federal funds this is been kind of an evolution of things throughout the past i'd say two or three presidencies where it's easier to divide people and make them feel like everyone again is against them on the opposite party so when you start playing with identity politics you start looping in hate groups with that identity politics game it's not going to go away and it's not something that started with trump it's not something sadly that i think will end with trump this tablature it might tell you politically motivated violence is something new but it's not maybe the bigger picture is it's just now being exploited for political gain. r.t. washington d.c.
5:12 am
. ok let's just get back to our top story on president trump's new plan for of get us thought i would have technical problems last let's get back to august so did mohammad marandi from the university of toronto if you can hear me this time thanks for joining us good to have you on trump was critical of obama's approach to afghanistan wasn't he but do you believe this strategy is actually much different. no i think the fundamental problem is that the united states uses extremism to promote its policies to advance its strategic interests it did this in latin america when it supported right right wing dictatorships or the contra rebels it did this in southeast asia during vietnam in the korean war and it did that it's doing that in europe when it supports neo nazis in the ukraine in our part of the
5:13 am
world we've been seeing over the past few decades that the united states along with the saudi regime they've been supporting was based extremists to promote their own agenda whether was in iraq or syria or yemen or even libya and the root of what we're seeing in this part of the world extremism that the saudis and the americans and others had have helped to promote this actually started in afghanistan when under the carter administration the united states were supporting these extremist groups to hurt this the soviet union at that time so now we see all of that tragedy that has unfolded in this region we see that it's all really linked back to what the united states did in afghanistan so if trump really want to bring about change if he's really honest the root cause is the extremism that the united states has used in addition to the fact that no one in this region wants american troops the united states is seen by the afghani people as an occupation force so by occupying the country they're not going to bring about peace
5:14 am
and by aligning themselves to our neo nazis to our extremists to our supremacist they are only going to continue to create catastrophe and misery for this part of the world ok but if we were to put in stark foreign policy aside i mean trump was very critically was running the campaign a disaster calling for total withdrawal who's one of the focal points of his presidential campaign was that why do you think we've seen such a total u. turn in rhetoric just in a matter of a couple of years. well regardless of what's going on inside the united states and the trump support for the old right and the divisions inside the united states one of the positive things that trump was thing during his campaign was that he wanted to withdraw american troops from abroad and that he wanted to end
5:15 am
intervention he also pointed out that the obama regime was the regime that helped create isis so he has reversed all of these we we saw that for example in syria when he attacked syria despite the fact that there was no evidence to show that the syrian government was behind the chemical attack there and the airbase is here in the syrians were willing to show open up the air base for anyone to see whether chemical weapons existed there or not if the americans were serious they could have sent a team and they could have it would have been clear whether the syrians were using such weapons but trump wanted to attack syria to to i suppose to. regain the initiative within u.s. politics itself similar to what. clinton president clinton did when he attacked. the sudan during the scandal the lewinsky scandal in or in order to draw attention
5:16 am
away from his own troubles at home but i think trump's position has weakened over the past few months and he's becoming more and more influenced by the same. state figures that have been promoting u.s. occupation and support for extremism that we've seen in previous administrations and he's moving closer in that direction that's at least what it seems from here right we'll have to see how the result of the coming few few months what we say to mom and more only from the university of toronto actually joining us giving us your insight today. thank you. back to the states where a black lives matter activist has come up with a solution to rochelle inequality in the united states the government saw the movement's organizer in kentucky wrote an article making ten suggestions for white people the first says they should leave their property to minorities if they don't have any descendants list also urges readers to record people who make racist
5:17 am
comments in the workplace and get them fired we asked tell about the initiative and also invited comment from political activist. one of the later numbers of the ten suggestions was to essentially seek out nazis in the workplace and get them fired and the word nazi has been so watered down lately that i don't think anybody really knows what it means anymore let's remember where the word nazi even comes from it comes from germanic people who are who proclaim to like have the superior race that's what white supremacy is that's what white supremacy is in the us we are talking about a systemic economic barrier that prevents black and brown people black and brown people who are already on this land from even up painting really and in various different rays the main issue we're talking about here is there's black people who've never been slaves asking for money from white people who've never owned
5:18 am
slaves and so it's difficult for me to be able to wrap my brain around owing somebody something when i clearly don't owe them anything and the notion that the that the list of ten things wasn't racist when it's when all it's doing is talking about race the list is essentially implying that black and brown people are incapable of achieving economic growth and as a result white people need to give them economic advantages i think it's very racist against black and brown people to essentially tell them they're not capable of this i think that is dangerous in the sense to say that what i wrote was they was was a racist or dangerous because it wasn't in the least none of what i wrote was dangerous and i think was dangerous is the backlash that i am personally receiving from it in one of the points you even say something to effect of you have hands colin use them very much harkening back to this overused phrase right now about punching nazis and we talk about nazis and plenty of nazis we are talking about
5:19 am
white supremacy why is that purposely did deal some of the most deadliest types of genocide that our world have. thing for i we're not talking about something that's just in a ten a list of things i want to talk about using your hands because nazis are violent against perpetuating a lot of this racial tension it's furthering the divide between races which i think if anything we should be trying to come together and it is encouraging some level of violence and it's very naive to act like you don't think it. the united nations warns of a massive civilian exodus from i still held city of tal afar as the iraqi army's offensive against them and so we'll have more on that and other stories of the short breaks those who. seem wrong. just don't. let me. get to shape
5:20 am
5:21 am
welcome back to the program iraqi forces backed by the u.s. led coalition have announced the mule peroration aimed at retaking the city of tal afar which has been under islamic state control since twenty fourteen in recent weeks the city has been extensively bombed both by iraqi aircraft as well as coalition forces on sunday iraqi minister body issued the following ultimatum. and the town of tal afar will be next in the march of liberation the heroic security forces preparing to liberate this region i say to islamic state you have a choice surrender or die. following nothing else meant the un humanitarian body issued a statement calling the situation inside the city very tough thousands of civilians are expected to flee the area as a result of the operation well there are still also large numbers trapped inside the u.n. says there's an acute shortage of basic supplies and medicine. says are civilians
5:22 am
or expected to flee from iraq's tell a far and surrounding communities during the iraqi military operation earlier we spoke to yan egeland who's an advisor to the un special envoy for syria and the secretary general of the norwegian refugee council he told us conditions are horrific for civilians fleeing. they know which in refugee council we are in the first line really of reception of billions from our conditions are horrific forty five degrees celsius day people have to go through long areas from a mixed state. control these people are really caught in a horrific crossfire urban warfare and especially air raids are always massively risking civilian casualties and other developments the
5:23 am
pentagon is now working to declassify it struck targets in mosul where many u.s. bombs failed to explode the movies however at all those with american law stipulates such details should be kept secret for at least twenty five years the u.s. commander in iraq and senate general stephen townsend says the information could be vital to help make the city habitable once again every army if you find a root piece of ground you leave a dud. bombs don't go off well we'll find a way to help them i think it is a public relations exercise to try and show that they are taking new issue of civilian. lives seriously so should send in the military engineers to try and search for the unexploded ordinance and move it out and they will of course have the coordinates in the maps and they're stupid that's much more important than just publishing the coordinates and relying on civilians to somehow works there where it is
5:24 am
a flea i mean these people are not trying to read maps they don't know what really looking at the un has expressed deep concern over reports that at least forty civilians have been killed in a u.s. led bombing raid in the eisel held syrian city of raka women and children are said to be among the dead according to reports the death toll could rise further with people feared trapped under rubble or to request a comment from the u.s. coalition you can see the response on your screen it says the allegations of civilian casualties are being assessed at the coalition takes any such report seriously yeah he's an advisor again to the un special envoy for syria. and the general of the norwegian refugee council says many civilians have lost their lives in the u.s. led bombing campaign of rock. in which is a heavily dense densely populated town that has been now been bartman from the coalition for a very long time inside the islamic state by this. whole thing as
5:25 am
5:26 am
international law professor that was cut out of believes the very presence of the coalition forces in syria already very has a lot of questions issue of gross negligence which is equivalent of a well full of conduct is a major factor in any country any group any entity that has forces that resort to violence with syria with then a state without the approval of the government of that state is operating on very thin ground and it's simply going to they don't coordinate with people on the ground with the syrian authorities in the first place and apparently they don't have even among their own friends they don't have reliable information to avoid
