well to discuss this issue further let's cross live to dr pull smith an expert in french politics at the u.k.'s nottingham university welcome to the program dr paul smith now in your opinion why do you think there's so much anger against the relabel reforms. well it's the same as we've seen over the last ten years the trade union movement or at least part of it in france likes to mobilize people and there's a sense that these these changes are all right a call but i think what we need to what we need to look at very carefully is just how many people really want this test is being seen as what today is being seen as is a test of the strength the depth of position i'd also the strength of one of the trade unions which is the main trade union that called the action today. and its relationship with the other trade union movement there are a lot of different levels in what's happening today in the fall and that we've seen

is really perpetrated by a lot collection of troublemakers of. troublemakers from the ana cased. black bloc so there's a lot of different things going on here but certainly the there is there is on the these reforms but at the same time i think within forces also a sense that something does have to change so it's it's it's not a clear cut business yeah i mean what you're describing is obviously a complex issue but nevertheless if you look at the pictures today an awful lot of people have gathered across the country so they really not all of them can be troublemakers the anger is obvious isn't it so what about the violence how likely is it that there will be the possibility of more violence in opposition to these new labor reforms. well i still think the

numbers are disputable you know that the police are. the official sources are saying twenty four thousand people in paris the unions are saying sixty thousand that's the first thing to say i think that there there is a sense of all disgruntlement a. piece about the reforms but i do think the violence has to be. to one side you know there is this kind of group of people who turn up and take advantage of this situation so it's not it's not as straightforward as all that but i do think i think you're absolutely right that there is a sense in france you know this is one group this is the first opportunity that the left opposition. of had to to oppose michael and that's what they're doing but we are talking about tens of thousands perhaps a hundred thousand people across the country we're not talking about a massive strong movement and it's when we sit down to morrow and look at the numbers and the real impact and of course then what's going to happen the

government has tried to pass reforms it's tried to negotiate with the trade unions and they in their instructions and previous governments have backed out and i think he's trying to say. he's promised to i say this time we're not going to back down in the same you know we're not going to go down the same path of proposing reform something has to happen we cannot live on. with this you know this builtin rate of unemployment we cannot keep paying pensions at the rate that we're paying them something has to change and we have a democratic mandate for that. so you know it really remains to be seen whether over the months to come whether this government on like its predecessors is able not only to talk the talk but you to walk the walk and that's to say to deliver the reforms it wants to deliver and what will be interesting is to see how the other trade unions follow the c.g. if they back the c.g. if. it's later on build i think this is this is the beginning and if this goes off
