almost director of national intelligence has not provided credible to support his claims of russia i also know he perjured himself in a senate hearing three months before the revelations provided by edward snowden he denied that the n.s.a. was carrying out wholesale surveillance of the us. the hyperventilating corporate media has once again proved to be an echo chamber for government claims that cannot be verified you would have thought they would have learned something after serving as george w. bush's useful idiots in the lead up to the invasion of iraq. it is vitally important that the press remains rooted in a fact based universe especially when we enter an era when truth and fiction are becoming indistinguishable. in case you're new to the game this is how. the economy is built around corporations operations from washington to washington control the media the media.

and voters elected to businessman to run this country business equals power who must it's not business as usual it's business like it's never been done before. the trumpet administration says north korea is begging for war with its nuclear missile tests kim jong un says a push for new and sanctions means the u.s. will suffer the greatest pain what's next i'll talk with the former u.s. ambassador to the united nations bill richardson on this edition. of politicking on larry king while his administration contends with multiple natural disasters at home tension with north korea continues to rise well the
6:31 pm
standoff with the rogue nation and donald trump says kim jong un is begging for war with his nuclear missile tests while pyongyang says the u.s. will suffer pain if a push for new sanctions succeeds we'll get the perspective from bill richardson former democratic governor of new mexico new mexico and former u.s. ambassador to the u.n. the governor says he believes kim jong un may be unpredictable but he's not suicidal he joins me from woods hole massachusetts or i build a subject at hand north korea celebrated its sixty ninth founding anniversary sunday p. on the ng warned it might carry out another missile test it did not give me a full assessment of the situation with north korea. well the fact that they did not have a missile test is good news it's they had a terrible six nuclear test days before and i was really worried i think i've never
6:32 pm
seen the situation so tense i think it's important that we have a strategy larry that we not the vide ourselves with south korea we're going in different directions of the u.s. and south korea i think the key is continue the very strong sanctions pressure at the united nations but also think of diplomacy think of a way that we have a dialogue with north korea it's going to be very difficult but maybe involve china involve the u.n. a third party negotiations that freeze the nuclear development and missile activity of north korea in exchange perhaps for some economic assistance i think eventual diplomacy has to rule we can't have a war in the peninsula there's too much at stake there's american troops there's our allies and japan and south korea i think the plum a c.
6:33 pm
is the best the only option and they're all bad options you're embarrassing to the u.n. nikki haley's former governor is now our ambassador and she said give him june is begging for war what do you think of the job she's doing. well i think she's doing a good job you know she's outspoken i think you need a politician in those jobs not because i was there she's colorful she she speaks her mind i think i wish that she and the state department and the secretary of state would coordinate their statements better because sometimes they give mixed messages but but i think eventual e. kim jong loon my view is he has an end game he's not suicidal he's unpredictable i don't think he's irrational i think somewhere he's got to come out and say ok i've shown you what i've got i've got my stuff now i'm ready to negotiate that's what i think his end game is but we don't know that but he sure is
6:34 pm
begging for attention with his missile the nuclear weapons tests what about him can june what does he really want some think he's mentally unstable even suicidal others say he may be crazy like a fox what's your assessment. i would say he's crazy like a fox very unpredictable very insecure of himself he's worried that somebody is going to topple of he's worried with a regime change sponsored by the u.s. so what he wants to do is build his nuclear and military capacity to the hilt to improve his negotiating position not just with the u.s. what with china what surrounding countries it's also an ego thing larry the north koreans i've negotiated with them they want to be the big boy on the block and north east asia they want to be equal that the u.s.
6:35 pm
they don't want intermediaries like china and south korea so i think a lot of it is is saving face and being very egocentric nobody knows this guy except for one chinese on boy and dennis rodman because he won't talk to anybody he won't see anybody so we don't know what to make of a but i think he's more crazy like a fox but very unpredictable and dangerous over the weekend senator john mccain battling brain cancer declared that the united states needs to make sure the jungle knows that if he acts in an aggressive fashion the price will be extinction what's the impact of this type of runner it bill. well i i have a lot of respect for senator mccain i think he's a hero he's contributed so much to our country i do worry about this saber rattling on both sides preemptive military strikes threatening bluster by
6:36 pm
both countries. because that can breed for a miscalculation a mistake an overflight by by one of the countries that will cause an incident the shooting of a fishing boat some kind of artillery shells landing in the wrong spot causing trip wire effect that could lead to war so i worry about comments but you with kim june you have to show him where we stand and i think secretary mabus and even john mccain statement there are appropriate but but i just think the plough massai is the answer and there is not enough talk about dialogue and the blome and see a negotiation in mid on this you wrote an op ed piece in which you said in the new york daily news south korea may be in the best position to help brute grew much needed compromise between the united states and north korea how so
6:37 pm
because the new leader of south korea i believe the new president he's realistic he got elected as a reform candidate against corruption he has talked about dialogue with north korea i think that makes sense they're right next to each other humanitarian exchanges family reunification i think that kind of soft power some soft. family human diplomacy is going to be the way that the two countries north and south korea come together it's an important first step so that's why i'm saying this south korean should not be dismissed that the president should not go after his policy of talking to north korea or try to change the u.s. south korea free trade agreement leave it alone there are friends there are allies we're bound together let's not disrupt our alliances let the mess with a political base geopolitical base that we have to see it on like from calling him
6:38 pm
an appeaser. no i doat this is a good president he won overwhelmingly he's got experience in oh i think he wants to send a message to his people in south korea especially the twenty five million people in seoul that you know let's have a dialogue with north korea and stead of threatening a nuclear war or an artillery attacks and land mines that could jeopardize those twenty five billion people in seoul american troops in the whole country of south korea so i think he's taking the right steps we should leave him alone and support him was germany's merkel has suggested that the twenty fifteen nuclear agreement with iran could serve as a model for negotiations with north korea she said germany's ready to play an active role what do you think. well i i believe we need new actors in this north korea situation the pope the secretary general of the u.n.
6:39 pm
who's done a good job antonio with carrots and angela merkel i think is one of the great leaders today in the free world she's bold she's strong she takes in refugees she's a leader in europe europe germany's the biggest economy i think they can play an important role and we should listen to her she is by far the strongest leader in europe along with matt crone of france and maybe give her a role as a mediator that's what i would consider doing all right let's get to some other things your reaction to trump's dealing with dhaka. i think it's a terrible decision look we've got close to a million young men and women that are here that are contributing that are patriotic that were part of america just because their parents came here illegally they were given a promise by the government that they could stay i think it's an unfortunate
6:40 pm
decision of the president but here's where the congress can fix it the congress can pass legislation to support these dreamers that want to be and should be part of america and the good news is that the president and the democrats are starting to work together you can't get anything passed i was in congress without bipartisanship and maybe this the disagreement on the debt limit will allow for future greenman spit tween republicans and democrats and president trump to do something and they need to do something on this immigration reform bill especially with these dreamers a may end young men and women totally out in the cold right now because of the president's decision politically speaking are you surprised that he turned away from his fellow republicans and sat down friendly with schumer. well i think there's
6:41 pm
a good thing happening at the white house and i have not been supportive of the president and that is that general kelly has become chief of staff and i think he's brought an order into the white house i think he's also said to the president that he's got a lot of ideological advisers like steven van and that were not serving him well that were not part of the agenda that had their own agendas and i think what this is done is that kelly has brought the concept of a good organized white house plus bipartisanship i think to get anything passed whether it's anything relating to tax reform which i hope the president liz's the democrats' health care and i hope he leaves obamacare alone and improves it that he's got to work with democrats democrats are ready to work with him if the president extends a hand and i do think this last an issue to have with the democrats on the debt
6:42 pm
limit on keeping the government going is a good first step believe in the night on sixty minutes steve benen said the firing of james komi was the biggest mistake in modern political history he said of komi hadn't been fired there would be a special counsel. i agree larry i think it was a big mistake to fire call me you don't fire the head of the f.b.i. you've got something worse a special prosecutor so i think it was a colossal mistake that is going to hurt the president and his team and this whole russian best a geisha will stay right there we'll be right back with more politicking after this break. about your sudden passing i phone lee just learned you worry yourself in taking your last bang turn. to caught up to you as we all knew it would i tell you i'm sorry i could so i write these last words in hopes to put to rest these
6:43 pm
things that i never got off my chest. i remember when we first met my life turned on each pair. but then my feeling started to change you talked about more like it was again still some more fun to feel those that didn't like to question our arc and i secretly promised to never be like it said one does not leave a funeral the same as one enters the mind it's consumed with death this one quite different i speak to you now because there are no other takers. to claim that mainstream media has met its make.
6:44 pm
6:45 pm
thing you are not cool enough and that's to fight their product. all the hawks that we all. walk. back to politicking my guess is bill richardson the former u.s. ambassador to the united nations former democratic governor of new mexico well catastrophes like harvey can elevate the presidency what syria says when this is how the government is handling this. well i would give good marks to the government the homeland security administration to the flood control people the state officials to all kinds of federal officials you know i'll say the governor of
6:46 pm
florida i think has done well my worry larry is that places like the virgin islands and puerto rico that have been hit very hard will not get the proper attention as some of the cities and states in the mainland i hope they do but i have firsthand knowledge of the virgin islands and it's been hit very hard but on the whole i would give the administration and the entities involved good marks i think it does show that we need to keep the strategic petroleum reserve heavy with petroleum i think we need to make sure that our electricity grid is strong and it isn't as strong as it should be because of the brown outs but on the whole i would give the government good marks before our made landfall environmental protection agency administrator scott pruitt who in the past has sued that agency said it's not time
6:47 pm
to talk about climate change do you agree. no i disagree i think it's very clear that human activity has caused the warming of the planet i think this is scientific evidence and the e.p.a. head is saying that instead of providing his evidence for there not being a link between human activity and climate change he just attacks scientists i think this has been one of the president's big big mistakes not a knowledge of the importance of climate change pulling out of the paris agreement and recognizing that the planet right now with these floods with these fires with these huge dislocations of people that climate change and science are saying that it's caused by human activity and we need to deal with it on a scientific basis not a political basis though thank you so much in continue to enjoy
6:48 pm
a great vacation in woods hole thank you very much larry all the best to you earlier this year doug to sue me terry was part of a molding nation group of delegates who met with representatives of north korea to explore the possibilities of six party talks designated to contain kim jong un's weapons program she's a former senior analysts on korean issues at the cia served as deputy national intelligence officer for far east asia at the national intelligence council she joins me from washington after that meeting you rode in the washington post dr. expressing great pessimism more than when you arrived why what happened. well when we met the north koreans they were adamant that there are no dead they're no longer interested in meeting with us to talk about nuclear weapons the nuclear
6:49 pm
weapons is off the table for negotiation for discussion that they are bent on completing the nuclear program bent on perfecting the nuclear arsenal and that's all there is to it they've said that they will continue to test nuclear tests and that they won't test intercontinental ballistic missile tests and they're said nothing we can do to stop that and of course this was in june and in july we had two intercontinental ballistic missile tests and now a six nuclear weapons test so what they said they've done what what dr terry do they want. they want to complete the nuclear program they want to have a capability to hit anywhere in the united states with nuclear tipped intercontinental ballistic missile because north koreans believe having this capability is the only way to guarantee the regime's survival they've drawn wrong
6:50 pm
lessons from libya from qadhafi qaddafi gave them nuclear weapons and now he's dead look what happened to saddam hussein new iraq so they say north dead nuclear weapons program is only way to for them to guarantee their own resume survival does he have a point. he does in the sense that it does make sense from kim jong un's perspective that he feels that he must have nuclear weapons to survive i mean in the end they kept pointing to our various adventures in the world and they said look what happened to these other guys why would we give this up we are so close to completing it we're so close to perfecting this arsenal we've spent billions of dollars why would we give this up. former u.n. ambassador bill richardson just told us that he believes that and that angela merkel of germany can play a part she can play an active role in some diplomacy here she's advocating for
6:51 pm
a deal similar to the one made with iran do you see any possibility that. i really don't because i think we're in a different situation north korea is already a nuclear power they already have nuclear weapons that can reach japan and south korea and they're so close supercomputing this program i just don't see them giving up nuclear weapons for any price and i think this korean leader kim jong un is different from his father his father was interested in potentially to go shooting with some part of the program for concessions and so on i think this leader is bent on just completing this is the un stable or is he putting sly i think is very sly very shrewd ruthless brutal just based on what he what his don't want in terms of purchase executing his uncle assassinating his have brother
6:52 pm
using ben to w m d and so on but i don't think he's. he's crazy i think he's very very shrewd and calculating and from his perspective what he's doing makes sense do you think he would start a war i don't think he were preemptively start a war with the united states because i believe that the regime's number one goal is regime survival so again kim jong un might be ruthless but he's not suicidal the region is not a deal logical they are not like terrorist groups these people want to continue to preserve like they want to preserve the regime so they know the moment they attack the united states it will be over for them what do you make of our u.n. ambassador saying that that jiang kim jong un is begging for war. well i think united states is extremely frustrated because we have very limited options when it comes to north korea so we want to make this point to north korea
6:53 pm
that you know if you know if the kim jong un regime continues on this path that you were lead to some sort of a destruction for the north korean regime the problem is no matter what we say it's not really credible because i'm not sure if military option is truly on the table even though we keep saying it is you are korean correct yes i'm korean born how do you regard i guess the other way to put it is your fellow temperament in the north where it's very sad you have to separate the region from the people the people are not all different different from south korean people they are these are the same people and they share a sip thousands of years of the same history they've been a united country for thousands of years they've been only separated since nine hundred forty five also the people are the same they speak the same language the koreans are the most homogeneous people in the world but of course the rejean is
6:54 pm
brutal and it's very sad the north korean people have to live on their this very poor old regime just because they were born in north korea my entire put us out of the family by the way came from north korea so i'm the product of do these kind of divided families how do you how do you regard trump policy visa via obama's policy . well. beyond the rhetoric and a lot of bluster the fire and fury unlocked unloaded and so on the certainly the rhetoric is very heated and i think the trauma demonstration is certainly trying to do more in terms of pressure because we are trying to elise incomes of sanctions go after the secondary boycott of chinese banks and entities and so on but at the end of the day we are faced with the same limited options as obama administration face as the bush administration faced as a kryten of ministration faced so we don't have a whole lot of different new innovative options when in when it comes to solving
6:55 pm
north korean problems so really the obvious question dr what is the answer unfortunately you're not going to like my answer i think we have very limited options going back to a dialogue doesn't quite make sense to me just because north korea is not interested in talking about nuclear weapons anymore a military option is off the table so we are really looking at containment and deterrence but that doesn't mean we can just you know we should just sit around it also means that we can continue with pressure sanctions missile defense trying to get information into north korea and so on but we in the short term might have to move on to deterrence and containment like we live with nuclear russian nuclear china nuclear pakistan and over the long term i think we need to get information into north korea and try to help people in north korea because the only solution is if north korean people bring about a change in the regime and change in the north korean state do you think at some
6:56 pm
level we are talking to someone there. we are trying i think there is some what you some sort of a new york channel discussion but again the problem is we're stuck because north koreans do not want to talk about denuclearization and we are the system that we have to talk about nuclear weapons obviously so we're still stuck and we're not really it was a breakthrough from that doesn't china have some clout with them well that's the big question if any country in the world has any kind of crowd you should be china because ninety percent of north korea straightest with china china provides the consumer goods the fuel and everything else and north korea needs to survive problem is china's interests in priorities fundamentally different from ours in that they prefer to not have instability in the korean peninsula they prefer to keep north korea as a buffer state they don't want unification certainly not south korean led unification or unified korea that's pro united states so they were never do
6:57 pm
anything to cause instability or region collapse in north korea that's the problem thank you so much for your time we hope to call on you again thank you sue absolutely thanks for having me on and thank you for joining us on this edition of politicking member you can join the conversation on my facebook page or tweet me of kings things and don't forget use the politicking hash tag and that's all for this edition of politicking. about your sudden passing i've only just learned you were a south and taken your last wrong turn. your act caught up to you as we all knew it would i tell you i'm sorry. so i write these last words in hopes to put to rest these things that i never got off my chest. i remember when we first met my life turned on each breath. but then my feelings started to change you talked about war
6:58 pm
like it was again still some are fond of you those that didn't like to question our arc and i secretly promised to never be like it said one does not leave a funeral in the same as one enters the mind it's consumed with death this one quite different i speak to you now because there are no other takers. to claim that mainstream media has met its maker. for decades the american middle class has been railroaded by washington politics. big body corporate interests just wrote out a lot of voices that's how we use them a new culture in this country now that's where i come in. i would feel i'd move on our feet america i'll make sure you don't get railroaded you'll get the straight talk in the break through. or through.
6:59 pm
our culture is awash in law that's dominated by streams of never ending electronic hallucinations that merge back fiction until they are indistinguishable we have become the most deluded society on politics as a species of endless and needless cold. the computer politicians more than just celebrities are two ruling parties are in reality one part of corporate and those who attempt to puncture this. breathless universe of fake news just signed to push through the cruelty and exploitation to be a little more up for so far to the margins of society including by a public broadcasting system that has sold its soul for corporate money that we might as well be mice squeaking against an avalanche. we must.
