they don't want intermediaries like china and south korea so i think a lot of it is is saving face and being very egocentric nobody knows this guy except for one chinese on boy and dennis rodman because he won't talk to anybody he won't see anybody so we don't know what to make of a but i think he's more crazy like a fox but very unpredictable and dangerous over the weekend senator john mccain battling brain cancer declared that the united states needs to make sure the jungle knows that if he acts in an aggressive fashion the price will be extinction what's the impact of this type of runner it bill. well i i have a lot of respect for senator mccain i think he's a hero he's contributed so much to our country i do worry about this saber rattling on both sides preemptive military strikes threatening bluster by

both countries. because that can breed for a miscalculation a mistake an overflight by by one of the countries that will cause an incident the shooting of a fishing boat some kind of artillery shells landing in the wrong spot causing trip wire effect that could lead to war so i worry about comments but you with kim june you have to show him where we stand and i think secretary mabus and even john mccain statement there are appropriate but but i just think the plough massai is the answer and there is not enough talk about dialogue and the blome and see a negotiation in mid on this you wrote an op ed piece in which you said in the new york daily news south korea may be in the best position to help brute grew much needed compromise between the united states and north korea how so

because the new leader of south korea i believe the new president he's realistic he got elected as a reform candidate against corruption he has talked about dialogue with north korea i think that makes sense they're right next to each other humanitarian exchanges family reunification i think that kind of soft power some soft. family human diplomacy is going to be the way that the two countries north and south korea come together it's an important first step so that's why i'm saying this south korean should not be dismissed that the president should not go after his policy of talking to north korea or try to change the u.s. south korea free trade agreement leave it alone there are friends there are allies we're bound together let's not disrupt our alliances let the mess with a political base geopolitical base that we have to see it on like from calling him

an appeaser. no i doat this is a good president he won overwhelmingly he's got experience in oh i think he wants to send a message to his people in south korea especially the twenty five million people in seoul that you know let's have a dialogue with north korea and stead of threatening a nuclear war or an artillery attacks and land mines that could jeopardize those twenty five billion people in seoul american troops in the whole country of south korea so i think he's taking the right steps we should leave him alone and support him was germany's merkel has suggested that the twenty fifteen nuclear agreement with iran could serve as a model for negotiations with north korea she said germany's ready to play an active role what do you think. well i i believe we need new actors in this north korea situation the pope the secretary general of the u.n.

who's done a good job antonio with carrots and angela merkel i think is one of the great leaders today in the free world she's bold she's strong she takes in refugees she's a leader in europe europe germany's the biggest economy i think they can play an important role and we should listen to her she is by far the strongest leader in europe along with matt crone of france and maybe give her a role as a mediator that's what i would consider doing all right let's get to some other things your reaction to trump's dealing with dhaka. i think it's a terrible decision look we've got close to a million young men and women that are here that are contributing that are patriotic that were part of america just because their parents came here illegally they were given a promise by the government that they could stay i think it's an unfortunate

weapons is off the table for negotiation for discussion that they are bent on completing the nuclear program bent on perfecting the nuclear arsenal and that's all there is to it they've said that they will continue to test nuclear tests and that they won't test intercontinental ballistic missile tests and they're said nothing we can do to stop that and of course this was in june and in july we had two intercontinental ballistic missile tests and now a six nuclear weapons test so what they said they've done what what dr terry do they want. they want to complete the nuclear program they want to have a capability to hit anywhere in the united states with nuclear tipped intercontinental ballistic missile because north koreans believe having this capability is the only way to guarantee the regime's survival they've drawn wrong

lessons from libya from qadhafi qaddafi gave them nuclear weapons and now he's dead look what happened to saddam hussein new iraq so they say north dead nuclear weapons program is only way to for them to guarantee their own resume survival does he have a point. he does in the sense that it does make sense from kim jong un's perspective that he feels that he must have nuclear weapons to survive i mean in the end they kept pointing to our various adventures in the world and they said look what happened to these other guys why would we give this up we are so close to completing it we're so close to perfecting this arsenal we've spent billions of dollars why would we give this up. former u.n. ambassador bill richardson just told us that he believes that and that angela merkel of germany can play a part she can play an active role in some diplomacy here she's advocating for

a deal similar to the one made with iran do you see any possibility that. i really don't because i think we're in a different situation north korea is already a nuclear power they already have nuclear weapons that can reach japan and south korea and they're so close supercomputing this program i just don't see them giving up nuclear weapons for any price and i think this korean leader kim jong un is different from his father his father was interested in potentially to go shooting with some part of the program for concessions and so on i think this leader is bent on just completing this is the un stable or is he putting sly i think is very sly very shrewd ruthless brutal just based on what he what his don't want in terms of purchase executing his uncle assassinating his have brother

using ben to w m d and so on but i don't think he's. he's crazy i think he's very very shrewd and calculating and from his perspective what he's doing makes sense do you think he would start a war i don't think he were preemptively start a war with the united states because i believe that the regime's number one goal is regime survival so again kim jong un might be ruthless but he's not suicidal the region is not a deal logical they are not like terrorist groups these people want to continue to preserve like they want to preserve the regime so they know the moment they attack the united states it will be over for them what do you make of our u.n. ambassador saying that that jiang kim jong un is begging for war. well i think united states is extremely frustrated because we have very limited options when it comes to north korea so we want to make this point to north korea

that you know if you know if the kim jong un regime continues on this path that you were lead to some sort of a destruction for the north korean regime the problem is no matter what we say it's not really credible because i'm not sure if military option is truly on the table even though we keep saying it is you are korean correct yes i'm korean born how do you regard i guess the other way to put it is your fellow temperament in the north where it's very sad you have to separate the region from the people the people are not all different different from south korean people they are these are the same people and they share a sip thousands of years of the same history they've been a united country for thousands of years they've been only separated since nine hundred forty five also the people are the same they speak the same language the koreans are the most homogeneous people in the world but of course the rejean is

brutal and it's very sad the north korean people have to live on their this very poor old regime just because they were born in north korea my entire put us out of the family by the way came from north korea so i'm the product of do these kind of divided families how do you how do you regard trump policy visa via obama's policy . well. beyond the rhetoric and a lot of bluster the fire and fury unlocked unloaded and so on the certainly the rhetoric is very heated and i think the trauma demonstration is certainly trying to do more in terms of pressure because we are trying to elise incomes of sanctions go after the secondary boycott of chinese banks and entities and so on but at the end of the day we are faced with the same limited options as obama administration face as the bush administration faced as a kryten of ministration faced so we don't have a whole lot of different new innovative options when in when it comes to solving

north korean problems so really the obvious question dr what is the answer unfortunately you're not going to like my answer i think we have very limited options going back to a dialogue doesn't quite make sense to me just because north korea is not interested in talking about nuclear weapons anymore a military option is off the table so we are really looking at containment and deterrence but that doesn't mean we can just you know we should just sit around it also means that we can continue with pressure sanctions missile defense trying to get information into north korea and so on but we in the short term might have to move on to deterrence and containment like we live with nuclear russian nuclear china nuclear pakistan and over the long term i think we need to get information into north korea and try to help people in north korea because the only solution is if north korean people bring about a change in the regime and change in the north korean state do you think at some

level we are talking to someone there. we are trying i think there is some what you some sort of a new york channel discussion but again the problem is we're stuck because north koreans do not want to talk about denuclearization and we are the system that we have to talk about nuclear weapons obviously so we're still stuck and we're not really it was a breakthrough from that doesn't china have some clout with them well that's the big question if any country in the world has any kind of crowd you should be china because ninety percent of north korea straightest with china china provides the consumer goods the fuel and everything else and north korea needs to survive problem is china's interests in priorities fundamentally different from ours in that they prefer to not have instability in the korean peninsula they prefer to keep north korea as a buffer state they don't want unification certainly not south korean led unification or unified korea that's pro united states so they were never do
