2:01 pm
this by the way just a stone's throw from the national parliament over our shoulder that's why we're here the bundestag there when you people there in the coming months i'm kevin zero in with me i'm delighted to say nikki. so tens of millions of voters have now decided how they want the parliament to look in europe's most powerful nation over the course of the evening we'll be keeping you upstate as the results continue to come in and we'll be getting live reaction from all the major parties had courses and of course we'll also be joined by many experts enjoyment german and european politics to hear their views on the significance of this vote for palin and the e.u. so we're here for the next ninety minutes and a lot more after that as well let's get this not in the way first of all because it's changing as we speak the results continue to come in the count is still on the way the postal votes being counted in the moment lisa next six hours let's check out these graphics of the moment leading the way as expected the angle of merkel's christian democratic union currently with thirty three percent of a. she hoped for
2:02 pm
a bit more martin scholtz than his social democratic party there and second he's talked of austinite there twenty two percent he wants divorce from any future grand coalition i want to go it alone big games this year as expected for the alternative for germany party with much million people are in the studio earlier on could barely contain his excitement they're going to enter parliament for the first time and so far scoring just over eleven percent they hope for a bit more than was top of fourteen the not there yet but i'd say those postal votes are being counted as well very early on when the polls closed two hours ago we got the first initial exit polls it's all pretty much done electronically but because a lot of the population are a little bit older here in germany apart it's a really high proportion i don't know there's still some of the postal votes right now we're going to continue to be counting days i suppose that you're going to talk about i think in a round about seven hours to you you're going to be only here three in the morning you say to the evening and i think you have a fair idea of then although it will be the final official one but that's when you
2:03 pm
can pretty much say that's what it's going to be and of course it's going to be another month of ramifications then and must the nations before they actually decide who's going to. go in coalition or not over there behind our shoulder it's a big job in this of course the most powerful country within europe as we said we're going to continue to stay with you throughout the night at this early early hours in the morning when those counts are still being and still being counted now listen have a look at how the main parties reacted when the results started coming in sally. saying i . think this is the day in history of our party we've made it we've entered the blunder star and we will change this country. we have achieved what is really a particularly revealing action which is. and they are at six o'clock today.
2:04 pm
we don't need to beat about the bush obviously we'd have hoped for a slightly better result that goes without saying it is our job to form a government and no government comes to be formed again stop without it well not really and of course there is a big new challenge ahead of us the party will be joining the parliament we would like to reclaim voters i think by solving problems by taking seriously their. and their fears but above all by waging a good policy. thank you thank
2:05 pm
you mr dewees a difficult day for social democracy we missed out on our electoral go after losing our central region and we lost the federal election after. just over seventy five percent of germany's sixty one million eligible voters have cast their ballots and that's according to the early estimates that's the same time in the two thousand and thirteen election year roy what a great move for angela merkel hawkins's of the c.d.u. h.q. get along q to get in the yourself didn't you because although you had accreditation as a big q tell us about what i mean really that's not the few i suppose the issue is that the c.d.u. the serious you are the worst result tonight since nineteen forty nine tell us about your problems first and then tell us but i'm glad merkel's. so it was a long queue to get in kevin luckily we just missed the rain that. again just after
2:06 pm
we go to wal-mart must be here though lots of press for round the world to be treated to a german beer german sauerkraut sausage and burgers so the party hasn't really been spoiled but frankl of michael this victory and it is a victory is very much britain's sweeter victory like it's the worst result one of the worst result since world war two as you say it's also the worst results for the social democrats the s p d they were officially rule themselves out of the coalition now any possible coalition as well local came on the stage to give a speech there was a very loud cheer as she came on traffic and shared throughout a small surface waters off pragmatic she's providing herself she said germany faces a challenging time but she will listen to the concerns and worries of nationalist voters who voted for the if the tried to bring them back with her policies she said she would rush to form a new government but no government of course can be formed without the c.d.u.
2:07 pm
c.s.u. alive still take months to form the new coalition old weeks rather could take a couple of months given the differences between the party policies in the meantime russia relations have been pouring in for mrs markle from the premie is a blow stony of the netherlands to. belgium premier brix its chief negotiator as well interesting to see what impact that will have on breaks it of course as well as what is the european parliament president and tony are to join he's a resident of merkel and paul going to work together for a stronger europe now i'll just watch took a bit about the possibilities for coalition governments because there were several before the results came in that'll change though with the s.p.d. rule themselves out now it's all bust was it cool to make sure that's because the colors of the three parties potentially involved the c.d.u. the freedom credit quality and the greens black yellow and black gold and green make up the flag. to make that is doing feasible combination now that lists of
2:08 pm
crunch the numbers that is the only way to get a majority we've had no word from the the freedom democratic party as far as i believe yet the greens have said they have a lot of differences with mrs merkel and have policies but they added somebody has to govern said lottery two weeks will go ahead mrs merkel has a force of one hope for thomas charles and that as well that will take her up to sixty years in charge of germany if she stays of course coat issues and longer serving shots in the old germany that will go up to four three two this term if completed would make the germany's longest serving shots in modern history apart from prince von bismarck many many years ago but this would make germany's longest suffering child so so long seventy five that many young people have known there was a leader let's just take a look at that but rather. the
2:09 pm
time i remember she was always there i mean i can't really remember a time when she wasn't like the chancellor and i don't even know who came before me . as only madonna's tatiana the makah said i think she was elected in two thousand and five for the first time i was like seven she's just been around forever she's always been an image she's been in power a long time i think there's a piece that is kind of us myself. i've never been an adult without under american government. in two thousand and five she was elected for the first time i was only thirteen. i pierced my ear lobe
2:10 pm
. a boy from my school died in a traffic accident. in fukushima the core melted people died. i went to mississippi for a year as an exchange student. blacks voted obama whites mccain barack obama became the first black president. studied. back and our own that. america. are just some of recollections asli some of these young people more known anywhere else and so she said twelve emotional go through to a number to mind with merkel she said it being fun come earlier on you can get the results she'd hoped for but nonetheless she said that they've been popping some champagne corks that's where the doing instead they are the alternative for germany
2:11 pm
but not outside those initial results came in it was immediately clear that the controversial terms of too many parties going to went to parliament for the first time protesters have been stationed outside their fifty h.q. with party members the anti fascist party have been demonstrating there but next million cross on the stage here earlier on to me is very happy to not only supporters being very very happy but a lot of people of course in germany and the greater europe as well are far from happy this is the first time since world war two that they're going to have a over our shoulder some some right wing opposition now the people have been outside demonstrating i think we could just show you the pictures maybe we'll we'll show them again anti-fascist parties or some strong language by the way that i think i've heard of getting the slightly delayed if there was we don't want profanity or swearing on this program we apologize for it we don't you to be offended so we're going to try to filter that so it's a bit of an issue for trying to bring. live pictures you never know what i was going to say maybe we can go to some of these demonstrations earlier on outside the
2:12 pm
fifty go yes we're going to bring you the latest pictures now from outside the f.t. headquarters that there is a police presence scuffles have been reported so not all celebrations tonight there are a lot of people very angry with the results that have been coming in over the past few hours so we're going to bring you the the live all the latest pictures as soon as possible and we do and apologize in advance for any profound i.c.'s that do manage to come out to us and here it is. was was was was. was. was was was . let's go straight that now shall we let's go live to polly boyko she's been
2:13 pm
tracking the developments at the alternative for germany camp here in. cali thanks for joining us now it looks like a if the will into the parliament with double digits has been a great turnout for them what has been the reaction of the parties come. they're very happy. that i'm going to michael this is obviously bittersweet because the a.n.c. is the policy go ahead hosted here this evening raining on the way this is an unprecedented result but make well you know that the san francisco needed to get him into the national parliament very nice now one of their top candidate that is to be seen with a little bit earlier on this is aiming to bring it to celebrate the speech and taking what she had to say. the first thing we're going to do is to deliver on that first promise. i'm really are going to start
2:14 pm
a commission of inquiry against angela merkel. which will clearly look into what this lady has done to contravene look at how the reason why we were able to come on board and. accept for germany with sasha back in two thousand and. well these live events are so we got our crews in all the main spots probably. some problem with a connection that has been raining tonight just to be said because charlotte going to her little bit later she's at the left part of east berlin we'll tell you a whole can see is also an about to get more reaction for the c.d.u. not been a great night for her for all the party because she still got
2:15 pm
a car and on the last we all spoke peter all of the f.t.p. it's been a good night for them by the thirty eight year old as well of course that while the ladies go well after apparently parents. were joining. by our guest dr hans day to claim them and our professor at the university of applied sciences in berlin thank you for coming into our studio here in l.a. and. michael you haven't done as well as she wanted to see this evening but just doesn't very well what do you think is the secret to have success why swimming so popular over all these years i think she is a very unusual leader because she isn't arrogant she is relatively modest but she is also a story and if it is required she is saying what she thinks been very clear birds i mean think about what she said to donald trump when he tried to intimidate her very calm very determined.
2:16 pm
modest but. crystal clear i think this way to present for. her. the issues that she wants to solve i think this has made her reliable and respected. as the challenge of forming a coalition doesn't she what do you expect to happen in the coming months and how difficult with the negotiations be i think we are going to live in difficult. the social democrats has have as you know. decided to be in opposition so the social democrats are not available for recall issues. the christian democrats have said that they do not want to form a coalition with the left party and the populist a.f.d.
2:17 pm
so what remains are two more parties the liberals who have removed. and the greens who have done little better than expected but none of these two potential coalition partners would give or a majority that she needs to form and doesn't think now with colleagues on the crowd they have tea party saying it was good it's going to broaden political discourse it's going to go into play when it brings some some fire and some spots but what the point of all of this it's all been a bit watered down angela merkel as she stands now with everything to go into coalition with and it won't be the f.t. as we know it is going to be less strong than she is at the moment surely in pushing any policies through. this is one aspect. because the policy positions of these two smaller parties are in part. not very well you know connected to the greens want more environmental protection close down the
2:18 pm
brown coal. enterprises put an end to the combustion engine in the automobile industry which they called it so badly here of course in germany absolutely and i mean the only policy field that i could think that they could reach an agreement would be to have let's say immigration law that's what both parties want but on the other hand i mean they are really. difficult because they know result us. no coalition you know so. it's a three party game it's not so easy to to lynch we'll see i'm not so optimistic it will take a long time and what i'm really surprised that is that up to now nobody has brought the minority government into play i mean the scandinavian
2:19 pm
story all the time and that could be an option to go with either the greens or with the depending on which way they want to travel in the future how much of an inconvenience is this long drawn out process of forming a coalition going to be to uncle america's just say much on her plate at the moment with the migrant crisis with terror attacks with the euro zone crisis relations with the us how much is this going to affect her but see what she has planned for the future. well the longer it takes the less time they will have to implement the policies that are needed not just in germany but in the european union i mean think of the german french projects they. want to do. with all these difficult problems and. is yes. they try to finish these. issues.
2:20 pm
very very quickly but i think the difficulties and the differences in their policy programs will make it a protracted the prolonged process social services little bit longer to come back to the second we just want to show our viewers something else will come but she was more common if you will come budget a minute or two. years at the helm of the merkel has become a divisive figure for the blocs politics lot of people like her but mostly seems unlikely to people doubt. not every decision she's made been welcome by member states. for a way europe is being challenged as opposed it has to find the answer as one we germans have every interest in playing a leading role in this world that. i
2:21 pm
don't like because of this migrant issue she was the one who told them to come write. that it has been very. tiring we say. we. are in the city we have. lived. with who still believe you so special the very next income from some of the new pushers of the old german interests their strengths the interests of the individual countries especially recently for not giving. a single i mean i see a man who is going to make a for the first time college and i was like let's hope you are doing good job so that you are the kind of guy to let's close in the goals we really need.
2:22 pm
this to work together money unfortunately germany has joined greece into a lab rat has turned it into a german colony and through greece of course the socially demolished old europe and its workers right. now as we were saying that of course is such an. powerhouse germany whoever's in charge here it does have ramifications across the broader europe as well or be the best coalition now all the best way forward as far as the rest of europe would like to see it happening in germany who would be the best powers to get into bed with angela merkel so to speak well i very much depends who rules in these other countries i think the response is probably different in france as it is in poland
2:23 pm
or in hungary but having said that i think the next government will if it consists of these three parties these three parties are all very vivid in our group protagonists of a united europe they have different ideas about how to achieve it. the liberals i mean the the f.t.p. are not so fond of a transfer union you know they are probably shying away from another package for greece or. these types of ideas of much to. have a european finance minister in parliament for the euro zone etc but in general i think. the solidarity with the european union which is more united is present in all three parties and merkel i think is the guaranteed
2:24 pm
standing but practically because if you're not a great follower of the german elections you know germany comes in quite complicated this coalitions of what could happen who could get together and there's an awful lot of seats to fill in that place as it stands at the moment all this might not really count what the whole of europe wants to see because there are only a certain number of ways that any coalition can can go now on their they're only what two or three options two maybe options or is going to have. my i mean i don't know but my prediction is that we will have. christian democratic christian social i mean it's also the. how different ideas than the christian democrats and the greens and the liberals i mean we will have that kind of correlation because the social democrats. this all time low in public support. they would be dead if they would enter another coalition so
2:25 pm
that's out of the question and that leaves us with this only one option if as i've said before if. they are not contemplating a minority government which of course would be a possibility. the most likely scenario now would be a jamaica i think you make a coalition the black to get the green as the state is you have to be in greens but poll said only twenty three percent spring support of such a coalition so what kind of aftermath for people will be looking at what's the option i mean the voter has spoken and you have that kind of parliament with six or if you can't see is seven parties and you have one of the bigger players who could enter a coalition and then make the government the social democrats who have explicitly said they don't want to do that. so what should you do new elections i think the
2:26 pm
acceptance of such a decision would not be so easy so there is this one coalition on the table and it will be a long process because the they don't square so well with their policies. like a doctor has said to take lincoln at a presser at the university of applied sciences in berlin thank you for coming and we do appreciate your insight it was my pleasure thank you. so that the projected results come in still the postal count still on the way leading the way as expected angular merkel's christian democratic union with thirty three percent of the. vote martin shows the social democratic party but my for them was an icky company just good only twenty percent of the big bang's this year though for me also a different germany party they're having a bit of a syndicate right now those protesters outside of the venue so they're not just when you someone's coming on the violence scuffles or the police is. quite
2:27 pm
a bit of trouble outside the house to be expected people shouting probably not see the police or the massive squad on the ground we saw a little chunk of we're going to. be caught at the moment if you see a fair bit of police there this is. a fascist protest a lot of people very unhappy tonight no no and it's grown quite a lot over the last half hour or so now close behind is the the f.t.p. the free democratic party with ten percent that seems unlikely coalition partner for christian lind the thirty eight year old who heads the party's already praised the return of his party to the poll just comment on the possible coalition every started to guess though remains also like that again going to stand left behind to eight now for the main tea party's base just a father was to reserve back and world war it's incredible isn't it a good vote for the s f t p so with polling stations now close very close to enough
2:28 pm
to go the party is preparing to give news conferences what actually does most of it but peter all of us at the free democratic parties he joins us now live peter i've lost track of the f.t.p. spoken yet or not i'm sure it's a christian listener earlier on. yes christian linda has spoken he received a raucous reception from what is continuing now is fairly subdued celebration here at the free democrats headquarters here in central berlin a lot of thought going into this next now what goes on in those. negotiations very tough negotiations that a stalling. almost immediately as to who joins the coalition or how that coalition will be managed now christian linda when he took the stage he said look if you go to applaud every every line that i say we're going to be here all night he is very well received among the supporters of this party that thirty eight year old former dot com entrepreneur is really driving this party hope from the diabolical state it
2:29 pm
was in four years ago no it was that was after it's been four years in coalition with angela merkel they were and niall ate it at the polls in twenty thirteen they took less than five percent they were out of the bundestag in the wilderness for the last four years they're back now with more than twice what they took in twenty thirty and it seems that a lot of that is being pinned on christie and linda and his successful leadership however how that pans out in coalition talks huge questions to be asked just off the top of my head if we look at greece and potential for a future bailout any potential future bailout for greece the free democrats they would be completely against not but when it comes to trade something that the free democrats are very much in favor of well look at big trade deals such as seats or tea tape the green party would be against those so how these two parties are going to come together with angela merkel on to.
