i also know he perjured himself in a senate hearing planned three months for the revelations provided by edward snowden he denied to be n.s.a. was carrying out wholesale surveillance of the u.s. . the hyperventilating corporate media has once again proved to be an echo chamber for government claims that cannot be verified you would have thought they would have learned something after serving as george w. bush's useful idiots in the lead up to the invasion of iraq. it is vitally important that the press remains rooted in a fact based universe especially when we enter an era when truth and fiction are becoming indistinguishable. on larry king you are watching our america question more.
8:30 pm
lindsey francis is the boss broadcasting around the world from washington d.c. tonight who were nearly gets his license suspended in the lucrative london market now its new c.e.o. has issued an apology and german chancellor angela merkel wins another term we take a look at what this means for germany and the european union for from a business angle and u.s. warplanes flew over the korean demilitarized zone over the weekend as the war of words continue between donald trump and can draw moon what impact will the sanctions have on north korea former u.s. attorney commissioner bart chilton stand by for us starts right now.
8:31 pm
the october eighteenth new travel restrictions go into place for citizens of chad iran libya somalia syria and yemen also certain venezuelan government officials and their immediate families also north korea it came on the day that trump's temporary ban on visitors from six muslim majority countries was set to expire ninety days after it went into effect he tweeted making america safe is my number one priority we will not admit those into our country we cannot safely vet this is after he read tweeted a white house statement and hansing vetting capabilities and processes for detecting attempted entry into the united states by terrorists or other a public safety threat steady its intent there now new sanctions against north korea were signed on sunday and as relating war of words we've got up days. on that
8:32 pm
now between trump and north korean leader kim jong il in the trump administration has barred americans from traveling to the country after a u.s. student was sent home in a coma and later died after more than a year in detention there are. new developments in the relationship between america and north korea after president continues his efforts to address north korea's nuclear missile development program of course he spoke at the u.n. several times last week and over the weekend the war of words between north korean leader kim jong un and trump continue even more comes out today the key action item in recent days however has been new u.s. sanctions on north korea these new sanctions target individuals and institutions which engage in business with north korea the goal is to reduce funding to this dictatorship here to discuss if these new economic sanctions might have any impact
8:33 pm
is former u.s. trade commissioner bart chilton bart let's get right to the latest news what do you make of the recent developments in the declarations that the u.s. wants well the foreign minister is saying that you know we have essentially declared war on the north korea can shoot down bombers even if they're not over north korean air space but it's pretty troubling this back and forth bantering and war of words and you know if it were a reality television show and somebody was being kicked off an island or fired it might be mildly entertaining but we're talking about firing missiles in this case so it's deadly serious and you know the to do list act to mean both the pros both presidents seem to just tweet and talk and taunt like high school bullies and i don't see much diplomacy even in the offing so i'm concerned about it right you wouldn't be alone on that let's take
8:34 pm
a listen. line items on these sanctions how about energy and oil well on energy and oil the u.n. put sanctions on earlier this month this is that will be the there were six previous times since nine previous times i'm sorry since two thousand and six where they placed sanctions on north korea because of the nuclear proliferation program but with regard to oil petroleum they reduce the amount of refined products from four to two point five million barrels a day that could come into north korea right they didn't do as much on the raw crude oil they left that sort of frozen the u.s. was arguing to cut that down for whether or not it's having any impact it remains to be seen right now there are some gas lines in north korea but only eleven out of every thousand people in north korea even has a car so they could just be you know hoarding and stocking up so we'll have to see on the energy in the petrochemicals right another area that people don't seem to think a lot about are textiles in north korea and how it might be suffering and be impacted
8:35 pm
by that that that's their number two export textiles and what happens there is a lot of companies and these aren't just companies from nearby in southeast asia these are companies garment cunt companies right holland germany france china so they'll ship them to china for the low cost of labor but then china which has a higher cost of labor than even north korea ships it into north korea right the average per capita income in north korea is a thousand dollars a year in china it's eight thousand just across the border by the way in south korea it's twenty seven thousand so they're really poor people and they work for peanuts now the question is whether or not these sanctions that the u.n. put in place will actually be hold up because there's a port there along that eight hundred eighty mile border with china and the in the province or the town rather of dandong. and that's
8:36 pm
a major export club and supposedly even though these sanctions are in place they could smuggle across the river at night winds right so we'll have to see on textiles what are your biggest concerns here just as you watch this whether or not your opinion sort of anecdotal well other than nuclear war there is there is a obviously no i mean i am concerned that these new sanctions that were put in place last week by the president and the executive orders that those really are adhered to and that is with regard to the financial institutions that no bank whatsoever and some of the largest banks in the world that. will be doing business with north korea otherwise they'll be on a blacklist and the treasury department the u.s. says the office of foreign asset control and they actually put companies and individuals on this black list and once you're there nobody can do any business with them so it could be a big deal while all these sanctions to date really haven't seemed to have a horrible impact and certainly not anything this deterred all this wild talk i'm
8:37 pm
hopeful that this really will these new sanctions really will do something it doesn't seem to be putting an end to any sort of volley of words back and forth rocket man. those sorts of words what do you think about president trouncing on a farm and well i mean i was not impressed i mean it was not diplomacy i mean the u.n. is a place where people are you know coming together made and all that's supposed to be peaceful place right this is the place where you go when you talk of bellicose bully and again i mean to pick up on the elton john thing i mean i think he keeps proving that you know he's a madman don't you know madman across the water both of them and that is not the type of diplomacy we need i don't know why they didn't sit down with ridge on the hoe the foreign minister of north korea and at least talk it out that they are going to come to any resolution but at least have a dialogue so now they're just talking past each other and i just. i don't
8:38 pm
understand the game plan here and you know the president's focused on the n.f.l. in the flag instead of foreign policy so i'm not sure that anybody's in really firm control here and that's a big cause for alarm i think any pressure applied by foreign countries or and things for the president to come to the table you talk about the foreign minister of north korea he was there we didn't see any any sort of coming to the table any pressure that can actually override this from other countries or the u.n. or anything very bad to dominate or a really good question there are other countries could do what we just did on the financial institutions assuring that nobody does any business with them at all they could go back to the u.n. and do a total ban on oil imports right now you're having some cheating i mean i couldn't say contemporarily right now but in recent weeks and months we've had cheating where there is a boat that left
8:39 pm
a lot of lost dock and said it was going someplace else filled with oil and it ended up in north korea there were two singapore flag vessels that left and said they were going someplace else and ended up in north korea and there's all sorts of games they can play with the transponders the things that track the ship reuters has a great tool called ship tracking and they follow these ships around and know where they're going but there's all sorts there have been efforts to circumvent the sanctions but a so i think staying really tough on the sanctions and then other nations particularly those in europe being harsh and doing what we did with regard to the executive order last week that might help what do you say to people who say the sanctions don't work it's unkind to the people what about the people there is a lot of him but i am a hard time to the people i mean this guy is truly a madman and he's the one that's doing this there's no reason that they should only have eleven cars per thousand people that they shout of a thousand dollar a year per capita income that's not
8:40 pm
a good. leader that's somebody who's holding his people down at the price of his either you know his own personal satisfaction in the war mongering or something that we don't know but i think it's really troublesome do you think we're going to see just last question here do you think we're going to see a for their crackdown on the ship the shipping i mean we know where the ships are coming from we know what they're loaded with we know where they're going they're going to get put on if they violate now as a result of the executive order they're going to put on this blacklist and we did one on the shipping company i talked about what was stuck into the independent petroleum company they were blacklisted on june first the two singapore floyd vessels were by a company called serban they were blacklisted on august twenty second so blacklisting this company's gives them a black eye and people don't want to do business i think that'll help all right former u.s. attorney commissioner mark helprin thank you very much. days after london's transport authority said it would scrap the company's operating license it worse
8:41 pm
new c.e.o. has apologized the city's transportation agency said last week it would not renew the license when it expires on september thirtieth citing a lack of corporate responsibility and concern for the public security over c.e.o. dora he issued a letter to london's evening standard newspaper in which he acknowledges that the company has got things wrong along the way as it expanded london is lucrative for over it has three point five million passengers and forty thousand drivers who are has long been a target of complaints from taxi drivers and companies alike cab drivers say drivers don't have to comply with the same licensing standards giving the right handling service an unfair advantage. time now for a quick break but stick around because when we get back coming up artificial intelligence is set to take over branding and maybe the marketing industry as a whole also my gas from the independent women's forum. with me to talk about this
8:42 pm

8:44 pm
i'm not a pretty clear picture about how disturbing to look for it would be more these are stories that you know know. my parents or you're close to the american. west. over the weekend german chancellor angela merkel won another term in office where individual victory didn't come as a surprise the rest of her party suffered a loss in vote two other parties to talk more about this we're joined now by boom box of young bianca for she knew bianca tell us what other parties won out over her so it would be c.v. you lost a lot of votes to the a.f.p. which is the far right now party in germany and they performed better than ever this past weekend on sunday german chancellor angela merkel won her fourth term in office that has held since two thousand and five. but her party the christian
8:45 pm
democratic union won about a third of votes demonstrating a pretty big decline in support in fact the cd you saw an eight point five percent drop in support in the last election and meanwhile the alternative for germany party size seven point nine percent increase in support and the free democratic party which is expected to become part of the coalition government also saw a significant jump in backing since two thousand and thirteen while coalition talks will begin soon one group we won't see involved is the social democratic party martin scholz who leads the social democrats ruled the party out of consideration and wants to remain as the opposition party in parliament while that decision has ruffled some feathers scholz did that due in part to the rise of the date which is a concern that the rest of parliament shares and at a news conference on monday merkel said she wants to win back the voters she lost to them. just and of course we're going to hoping
8:46 pm
for a better result of growth and of course we analyzed as far as possible and the stage today immigration reform to last about one point three millimeters to the end of zero one million today i have to see it was an. inspiration to win them back. and problem solving. while she acknowledged the differences between all parties michael added that she doesn't think the f.t.'s performance will impact policy at home or abroad but the post-election sentiment was very different from leaders of germany's surging nationalist party during their own press conference leaders vowed to continue fighting against merkel's open door refugee policy let's talk more about the how did leaders accept the election result well they are basically taking it as a victory and it's also sort of
8:47 pm
a comeback last year the f.d.a. was polling at about fifteen percent kind of at the peak of the refugee crisis but then this year earlier in the year they were only polling at about eight percent it wasn't until a few months before the election when there were lots of disagreements between other parties in parliament that this maybe we should took take a look another look at the f.t. and then you know they came in third on sunday during sunday's election and then we saw a lot of other leaders throughout the other national leaders like marie le pen of the national front in france congratulate the f.t. and say listen you know we've kind of performed the same way during our elections and there are plenty of other countries in the e.u. where we're seeing similar movements so you know we're not going anywhere it is important to point out though that merkel as an individual leader has pretty high approval ratings you know her party that's not exactly not exactly her and also another thing that that happened that was interesting was one of the original leaders. d. announced on monday that she's going to take a role as
8:48 pm
a member of parliament but she's going to be independent and she's not going to be associated and. it was over the surprise no one really knows why but you know overall they're they're so happy with the results they're all making it as a loss before we go drawing voters the refugee crisis the economy bailing out other countries i'm assuming yeah so when they started i mean mind you there are only four years old they start in two thousand and thirteen and guy is a lot of momentum yes and for years when they started they were an anti euro party in the euro zone but then they really shifted from the refugee crisis and that's what's led to this surge in popularity for them thank you so much for the. brands may soon take a backseat as machines make more decisions for consumers it would really throw a wrench in the works for the marketing industry as it strives to measure consumer preference and a market's insider report aaron shapiro the c.e.o. of marketing firm huge says it's very disruptive for many countries. now it's
8:49 pm
important no artificial intelligence powerhouses like google are already in on this game for instance google has a new smart assistant apple features a facial recognition unlock tool and let's talk about food how you stock products in your house and refrigerators measure which type of product you prefer and order your refills by a simple connection to a satellite and your bank account or could it come up with delicious recipes based upon the contents it sees in your fridge one samsung product features some of these characteristics already amazon offers up alternate choices to your usual picks on its platform all of this means that marketing giants are swiftly turning into ai product reading companies in order to track preferences before you even know what's happening so we may soon be kissing goodbye to billboards.
8:50 pm
capitol hill and tax reform we've talked about corporate tax rates repatriation taxes and income taxes blood's talk about small business owners the female ones check this out when it comes to women there's just in the workforce around seventy four percent but that's down from seventy seven percent not too long ago what about those helping to run the labor market for more on this i'm joined by patricia lucas senior fellow and political analyst at the independent women's forum big topic especially with tax reform on capitol hill right now growth of female minority owned businesses is one of the remarkable trends over the past decade you've pointed out that it's had more than one hundred percent increase. what do you think is the reason for this what push this was it an ending of stigma was it tax breaks
8:51 pm
a societal acceptance of this social. economic i think a couple of things number one coming out of the recession i think a lot of black women and women of color couldn't find opportunities at the same level so they were put out of work they had to continue to feed their families and they created opportunities i didn't exist before and then number two the staying power that they have i think is related to the social media and to technology and how they're able to tap into kind of entirely new business people followers and you know fans who are able to buy products that they can produce so whether you're into a manicure as you're into hair care products you have a whole new world of people that you didn't have before technology was so prevalent what kind of incentives do we need for small business so to really be able to reinvest in their companies especially women oh my goodness so we do need tax reform particularly we need tax corporate tax cuts but also individual tax cuts what i think a lot of people miss is the fact that many small business owners are not big
8:52 pm
corporations they're actually people who do their taxes on their personal income tax as we call those passed through companies and so when you're giving them a tax break or a tax cut they're able to reinvest that money right into their caught into their businesses and i think we've seen estimates that the average american family will save about a thousand dollars in taxes if they get tax cuts done and that's a lot for the american family what have been some of the biggest hurdles for female business owners in america and i know over the years minorities have had a very hard time getting started because of discrimination and not just being a woman but being a minority as well and what have been the biggest hurdles for them i see for you need networks of people to encourage you to help you find opportunities you need to get over that fear of failure i mean and you also need people just to help you support your business but i think the biggest one is access to capital most minority owned businesses owned by women are self funding meaning that they are tied there and they're building their business as a side hustle or as
8:53 pm
a side job. that actually right and so when they have more money in there from their paychecks they're able to put that into their business and hopefully transition into something permanent and full time rather than just kind of splitting their time chances of seeing this get noticeable play on capitol hill health care north korea. the list goes on tax reform is being pushed forward the g.o.p. says let's focus on slashing corporate and individual taxes do you think there's enough focus on slashing. taxes as they are aimed at small companies and women owned companies i think there is a congress can walk and chew gum at the same time and while i mean the most recent health care repeal and replace effort just came up last week again they've been pretty laser focused on trying to figure out how do we cut taxes how do we also reform our tax code to make it less arcane and to take that stress off small businesses and so i think that they're going to they're going to they're going to get it done i've listened to tax senators staffers on the hill who are actually
8:54 pm
writing the bills and they're saying it's going to take some time but we think that we can get it done and there's a lot of outside pressure right now pushing for this occupational licenses at the state level we both know the side household the side there's a lot of women trying to get cosmetology licenses. massage therapy licenses what do you think of these requirements and the cost to female business owners this is actually the one bipartisan issue in washington d.c. i mean president obama in two thousand and fifteen said these occupational licenses cost millions of jobs and cost increase in costs for is for people who are buying the services so it takes and it takes opportunity away from women from immigrants in particular from people who have a record and so you know they're meant to be just barriers or requirements for you to get into a field. of work that you like or vocation but they end up holding people back and so i'm really excited at the state level to see how many state legislatures and
8:55 pm
governors are saying we need to take a look at whether the. the requirements make sense do you need one hundred hours of instruction and two thousand dollars just to learn how to cut nails or to wash to be a washer in a salon you probably don't so let's let's make it a little bit easier or entirely get rid of those occupational i specially since with a lot of these salons now that you bring up bring on apprentices you know people that are willing to learn ownership and that's just something you and i have probably heard a lot about let's talk of new york times article that made the case the best era for working women was twenty years ago the late ninety's and you find that to be true i laughed because i remember how right i was generally but i didn't want her life i mean i thought it was what she did was amazing and she had a great career but she also seemed really better a little bit angry that she wasn't getting to experience all of the life milestones that other women had i think millennial women we read these articles and we recognize yes women are not where they could be but they're also not where they
8:56 pm
have been in the past and so what are some of the things that are holding us back some of them may not even be holding us there they just may be our choices and when we decide to leave the workforce to to have children to have families and then there are other things that may be external factors that have an impact on our on our work trajectory but i read that new york times article and i laughed because you know what if you asked a middle aged woman today whether she would want to be murphy brown or she would want to be in the position she is today i'm pretty sure she would say she's much better off right now i think there's also been advocates in the following generation of work life balance and how important is to have a family you don't want to be a widow to your job and i think there's a lot more advocacy for that do you also point to health care costs child care costs and things of that nature that are astronomical that women even corporate women who pull a big paycheck can barely afford yeah well and i mean they're able to usually work that out with their employer but sometimes. but if you're if you are a low income one man you have to make some tough choices and so i think i'm excited
8:57 pm
. actually to see the attention from the white house and from even congress right now on childcare how do we provide. resources for women who want to or men who want to be able to take time off from work to welcome a new child into their family and i think that there are some private sector opportunities that are out there and some ideas that are floating out there it'll be interesting to see where this ends up on the agenda yes this legislative season thank you so much patrice and we've got a senior fellow and senior political analyst for the independent women's forum thank you thank you. thanks for watching be sure to catch on direct t.v. can find us on the r.t. channel three two one and if you miss us on direct t.v. when you go to youtube dot com slash boom bust our team thanks for watching the next.
