8:00 pm
media is not telling you about how we're going to filter it through some satirical comedic lenses to make it more digestible that's what we do every week hard hitting radical comedy news like radack it's a night is where it's at. on the news tonight president trump pitches hard for a brand new tax plan on the heels of the republicans latest failed attempt to repeal obamacare and over three point four million americans in puerto rico are without power tonight as the island faces severe food and water shortages. and syria's government continues to push back isis as iraq moves troops to confront the recently independent kurds and kirk up i met charles reporting tonight from washington d.c. this is the news on r.t. america.
8:01 pm
good evening friends we start tonight with what republicans love to talk about taxes and tax cuts calling it a once in a generation opportunity the president rolled out the largest tax cut in america's history it's a big plan and the trump team is taking a big bite out of the republican playbook and offering up a refined pro growth tax plan. under the plan the individual tax rates will be reduced to twelve twenty five and thirty five percent every income earner will see a reduction the corporate tax rate would drop to twenty percent the earned income tax credit for families will double to twenty four thousand and the alternative minimum tax along with the inheritance tax will be eliminated we want tax reform that is pro growth pro jobs pro worker pro-family and yes tax
8:02 pm
reform that is pro american. it's time to take care of our people to rebuild our nation and to fight for our great american workers trumps plan was received on capitol hill with open arms and plenty of promise to get it done instead of a source of pride our tax code has become a constant source of frustration it's too big it's too complicated it's too expensive today we are taking the next step to liberate americans from our broken tax code but true faces the inevitable task of helping industries he promised to help candidate trump made a big splash at the carrier plant in indianapolis indiana which had announced the
8:03 pm
export of jobs to mexico. some jobs were saved although union workers think trump oversold the outcome of the place to measure that is carrier. ok he being nothing happened there carrier they saved a few hundred jobs with a grant of seven or eight million from the state but that seven or eight million dollars is there to put in new technology for the people that are left are going up with less of them. now if the president had been serious about carrier he would have found some way to put the brakes on he could have said to united technologies if you move the jobs to mexico i want to review every contract that you have meanwhile the steel industry is still suffering waiting for the commerce department to finish a report on unfair trade china and especially south korea are dumping steel at a rate which threatens the entire steel industry in america tax cuts are an easy sell in washington. but increasing wages and workers' rights is what the middle
8:04 pm
class seems to be focused on when do you hear people getting on the talking heads whether they're democrats or republicans on political talk shows getting up and say you know the reason that wages have been flat in america is that there's been an attack on the labor movement since ronald reagan and the labor movement has gone from thirty percent to thirteen that that didn't happen as an accident that happened because there's a plan by corporate america corporate global companies to push wages down to reduce workers' right to have a vote in the society work reduce workers' right to have a voice. for more on this we go to former florida congressman alan grayson tonight and also former georgia congressman bob barr gentlemen good to have you with us tonight part of this tax plan that the president has put forward is to repatriate money that has been put overseas to create jobs over there mr barr let me ask you first what chance do you give this
8:05 pm
a passing is this something that maybe you think the democrats might go along with . i think eventual a what we're saying today at is simply the first proposal obviously there are going to be changes made some of the blanks need to be filled in but i think if if trump does what ronald reagan does and i know this is not does not fit necessarily with the way trump seems to do business if trump stops insulting people and beat a little and people in both parties on both sides of the aisle and looks for ways to bring them on board to make some concessions i think that this proposal in a final form similar to what we see today but not exactly like it has a lot of merits it really does help families it really does help the middle class it really does help small businesses like mine and atlanta georgia where you basically get double tax i think there's
8:06 pm
a lot of merit here it's not perfect by any stretch of the imagination but you know to hear people whine against a like chuck schumer you know like the sky is falling on the bottom is going to fall out is uncalled for work with trump and see if he'll work with them alan grayson will the democrats accept a twenty percent corporate take tax rate or is that just too big of a bite what do you think. i think there's enough democrats who are sell it democrats do something like that and i expect that from bernie sanders but there's sort of a threshold issue here that nobody is willing to talk about why are we cutting taxes when there is a one hundred billion dollars deficit this year two hundred billion dollars more than projected two billion dollars a day two thousand dollars for every single american why are we making sure that the rich get richer and the poor get poorer well when the government can't pay its bills alan that's an interesting point will americans by this i mean you know the republicans have been squealing about the federal budget deficit for years and too
8:07 pm
much spending will the american people hold on to this what do you think i think it will be sold to the american people the same way that you saw candy to children of course they're going to lunch for it because it's something sweet but that doesn't mean it's a good thing for you in fact if we're not going to try to cut the deficit when unemployment is four percent then when are we going to do it mr barr something to say that the republican motive here is to starve the treasury to lead us down the road of privatization and cutting government programs what's your response to that is there merit to that. well i don't i don't necessarily see the connection between those two things cutting government spending is good and i agree with alan that we republicans have not done a good job of doing what they said they would do and that is to cut the deficit to cut government spending what we did back in one thousand nine hundred ninety seven when i was serving in the house along with newt gingrich and bill clinton was
8:08 pm
president by the way a democrat we put together a balanced budget act that had some measure tax cut tax cuts to capital gains for example that cause the economy to do very very well it had some of what president clinton wanted some of what we as republicans wanted and it was good for the economy but the one thing missing now that we insisted on back in one nine hundred ninety seven was cuts to government programs and lest you do that we're going to continue to see the debt. bolu not the way it has been it would seem to me this is going to be an easy toss in the house alan grayson but will there be senate democrats that come on board and will they get sixty votes on this that's a big number yes they'll buzz them one by one that's what they'll do corporations that hand out the ten thousand dollars checks will start writing bigger checks to super pacs and the this by the votes that they need that doesn't make it right alan
8:09 pm
grayson bob barr gentlemen great to have you with us tonight thanks so much thank you hospitals in puerto rico are facing power outages as the island suffers from shortages of fuel and water three and a half million americans are without power with ten confirmed deaths are ts breena porton i has the latest from miami tonight according to sema fifty eight out of puerto rico sixty nine hospitals are without electricity or fuel for generators now a lot of the minimum amount of hospitals currently functioning i'm not i lent maybe around eleven official. say they are i pull capacity and face frequent power outages in one case desperate tweets have been sent by a physician from the stand george children's hospital in san juan warning that people will die if more assistance is not received at another hospital in san juan two people reportedly lost their lives in an intensive care unit after ran out of diesel for the backup generator officials say distributing the food water fuel and
8:10 pm
medicine ship to puerto rico is proving to be challenging with debris and downed power lines still blocking streets puerto rico's governor says they're also lacking enough drivers to transport the goods senator marco rubio visited puerto rico says challenges on the island are extraordinary some of the areas outside of san juan where there's still no communication and no powers logic tells you there's probably some very critical medical needs that are met in those areas and assuming we can even identify them how do you deliver medicines and lifesaving supplies across roads that might still not be navigable and so the challenge is a storm and it will take a much more aggressive federal reaction than we would traditionally see in order to kind of turn the corner on some of this. hurricane maria was the most devastating and powerful storm to hit puerto rico in more than eighty years an estimated forty four percent of residents on the island still don't have clean drinking water and
8:11 pm
many are standing in line for up to twelve hours for fuel jones act for him it's foreign flag vessels from picking up and delivering fuel and goods between u.s. ports so this means all shipping to puerto rico is limited to u.s. flagged vessels as a result the people of puerto rico are often forced to pay at least twice as much for food clean drinking water supplies and a letter to d.h. as arizona senator john mccain called the department's decision unacceptable citing the agency's willingness to waive the jones act for relief efforts in texas and florida following hurricanes harvey and irma senator mccain urged us to rethink its decision warning that puerto rico faces a humanitarian crisis as the island's three and a half million people struggle to survive without electricity or clean water officials estimate the island could be without power for up to six months now following the outcry over the rejection to waive the jones act for puerto rico president jumps said that the white house is considering issuing
8:12 pm
a waiver for the island but the us leader noted that the shipping industry has voiced its opposition because of course it hurts their business interests to rico's governor ricardo or seo says he is confident that the president and his administration will help the island in puerto rico is should be grateful for the federal response so far however many residents in puerto rico feel president trump who has yet to visit the u.s. territory has failed to evaluate the real level of damage to the u.s. president visited texas and florida just a few days after the states were hit by hurricanes but mr trump won't be until it's to puerto rico until next tuesday take a listen to what residents there have to say. if he could show his power in puerto rico things would be different very different many people don't trust him. all he knows to do is make money just money for the united states but it isn't
8:13 pm
think about talking to people to see what is better to communicate with the locals to see what we need all the things about is sending money home without money they haven't evaluated the real level of the damage they are doing what they can however they can but since there is no communication people don't know what to do or how to do it the shelters have collapsed i heard from the federal. obviously you hear their frustrations and anger among many puerto ricans as the island faces a very long road of recovery and rebuilding thank you tonight despite the senate g.o.p.'s repeated attempts to repeal and replace obamacare president trump still believes he has the votes on the health care bill. one. big. weather center nothing. but problems
8:14 pm
but right. to do it. but i feel we have no. remember. what. we cannot claim. for more on this we go to our political panel tonight mitch caesar former florida democratic party chair and also sean steele former chair of the california republican party gentlemen good to have you with us i don't know the math wasn't there yesterday why did they take the vote mitch cesar is the president living in some alternate reality. well it seems we're all living there with him since he got elected the facts seem to have a very kind of lucy goosey situation with him the votes are going to change if anything they can get harder the other way perhaps the things because he's going with some weird plan now that rand paul had recommended he picks up that vote but he may lose other votes elsewhere the other problem is that he's talking about an
8:15 pm
executive order which frankly will not be legal will be challenged by democratic attorney generals much like they did the immigration situation there's no way what he's recommending will be able to hold up you can't use an executive order to preempt existing state law sean steele i just watched the president today and i just felt like i was really listening to a real estate agent i mean there's a swamp here but you could still build on it there over a three on health care if they had had the votes they would have taken it one vote they could have given up one vote and still had the vice president come in this is hard to sell jobs i've seen the president make what's your take on it. you know what he is a salesman he never gives up i think people like fighters but time is on a side obamacare continues to kid more expensive covering fewer people more people are opting out of it it's a disaster it's going to hurt democrats in a way it's kind of like a slow bleed now the republicans are trying to cobble toughen together to satisfy
8:16 pm
their coalition and that trump was trying to push it forward i don't know if he makes it or not he makes it exciting but time is on the side because nobody really likes obamacare and clearly this democrat that's not going to hear democrat well ok well half the country is in the neighborhood here's the bottom line the president made news today saying that he's going to sign shown an executive order to allow people to to purchase insurance across state lines what's that do what is that going to do to this whole debate. well the implications that's something that has been a republican dream and a conservative dream for decades because some states have such onerous requirements for health care that nobody wants that's very expensive for certain special kinds of therapies that aren't even pre-computer mainstream or f.d.a. approved other states don't have those requirements so you have bizarre situations now if you're just a regular middle class working person and you want basic insurance and you know
8:17 pm
what hypnotic therapy you should be able to buy that from another state what about it that state that you live in misses that change the dynamic of the debate. it does because it's not possible this experiment is a republican pipe dream that has been tried before and failed specifically in two republican states wyoming and georgia consumer groups are against it insurance groups are against it talking about why are we under a state regulation and yet under an executive order so when you go to another state that he create and allow them to buy without regulations this is a failed pipe dream i think he literally said all this off the cuff without any discussion advance of congressional republicans i think they were probably caught off guard i think the only thing that might have been truthfully said is why i like to work with the democrats because he likes to throw that out put pressure on republicans and of course the last time he did that his poll numbers went up it has everything to him. mitch caesar and sean steele gentlemen thanks for joining us
8:18 pm
tonight i appreciate it so much. thank you when the president is upset with his secretary of health and human services tom price secretary price is under fire and under investigation by the inspector general for using taxpayer funded private jets for government business. but. i will tell you personally i'm not happy about it i'm. not happy about it. legendary basketball coach rick pitino has been placed on unpaid leave by the university of louisville his lawyer says today that he was fired the f.b.i. has charged two unnamed lupul coaches with bribing two high school recruits the payments allegedly involved the university's apparel company adidas but tino was in ducted to the coach's hall of fame back in two thousand and thirteen. the taliban

struck a bull's airport today with mortar fire the attack targeted defense secretary james madison's plane as it touched down for the official visit mattis is in afghanistan with nato secretary general u.n. stoltenberg for a tour of military facilities in the country the two pledged continued support to afghan forces as nato secretary general stoltenberg said last week that the united nations this is about making sure that afghanistan doesn't want to get to become a safe haven for international terrorists and the best we have doing that is to enable the afghans to have defense security forces which are strong enough to do just that. stoltenberg pledged one billion dollars a year from nato until the year twenty twenty the war of words between the united states and north korea has real life consequences but what is the line between
