good evening friends we start tonight with what republicans love to talk about taxes and tax cuts calling it a once in a generation opportunity the president rolled out the largest tax cut in america's history it's a big plan and the trump team is taking a big bite out of the republican playbook and offering up a refined pro growth tax plan. under the plan the individual tax rates will be reduced to twelve twenty five and thirty five percent every income earner will see a reduction the corporate tax rate would drop to twenty percent the earned income tax credit for families will double to twenty four thousand and the alternative minimum tax along with the inheritance tax will be eliminated we want tax reform that is pro growth pro jobs pro worker pro-family and yes tax

reform that is pro american. it's time to take care of our people to rebuild our nation and to fight for our great american workers trumps plan was received on capitol hill with open arms and plenty of promise to get it done instead of a source of pride our tax code has become a constant source of frustration it's too big it's too complicated it's too expensive today we are taking the next step to liberate americans from our broken tax code but true faces the inevitable task of helping industries he promised to help candidate trump made a big splash at the carrier plant in indianapolis indiana which had announced the

export of jobs to mexico. some jobs were saved although union workers think trump oversold the outcome of the place to measure that is carrier. ok he being nothing happened there carrier they saved a few hundred jobs with a grant of seven or eight million from the state but that seven or eight million dollars is there to put in new technology for the people that are left are going up with less of them. now if the president had been serious about carrier he would have found some way to put the brakes on he could have said to united technologies if you move the jobs to mexico i want to review every contract that you have meanwhile the steel industry is still suffering waiting for the commerce department to finish a report on unfair trade china and especially south korea are dumping steel at a rate which threatens the entire steel industry in america tax cuts are an easy sell in washington. but increasing wages and workers' rights is what the middle

a passing is this something that maybe you think the democrats might go along with . i think eventual a what we're saying today at is simply the first proposal obviously there are going to be changes made some of the blanks need to be filled in but i think if if trump does what ronald reagan does and i know this is not does not fit necessarily with the way trump seems to do business if trump stops insulting people and beat a little and people in both parties on both sides of the aisle and looks for ways to bring them on board to make some concessions i think that this proposal in a final form similar to what we see today but not exactly like it has a lot of merits it really does help families it really does help the middle class it really does help small businesses like mine and atlanta georgia where you basically get double tax i think there's

a lot of merit here it's not perfect by any stretch of the imagination but you know to hear people whine against a like chuck schumer you know like the sky is falling on the bottom is going to fall out is uncalled for work with trump and see if he'll work with them alan grayson will the democrats accept a twenty percent corporate take tax rate or is that just too big of a bite what do you think. i think there's enough democrats who are sell it democrats do something like that and i expect that from bernie sanders but there's sort of a threshold issue here that nobody is willing to talk about why are we cutting taxes when there is a one hundred billion dollars deficit this year two hundred billion dollars more than projected two billion dollars a day two thousand dollars for every single american why are we making sure that the rich get richer and the poor get poorer well when the government can't pay its bills alan that's an interesting point will americans by this i mean you know the republicans have been squealing about the federal budget deficit for years and too

much spending will the american people hold on to this what do you think i think it will be sold to the american people the same way that you saw candy to children of course they're going to lunch for it because it's something sweet but that doesn't mean it's a good thing for you in fact if we're not going to try to cut the deficit when unemployment is four percent then when are we going to do it mr barr something to say that the republican motive here is to starve the treasury to lead us down the road of privatization and cutting government programs what's your response to that is there merit to that. well i don't i don't necessarily see the connection between those two things cutting government spending is good and i agree with alan that we republicans have not done a good job of doing what they said they would do and that is to cut the deficit to cut government spending what we did back in one thousand nine hundred ninety seven when i was serving in the house along with newt gingrich and bill clinton was

president by the way a democrat we put together a balanced budget act that had some measure tax cut tax cuts to capital gains for example that cause the economy to do very very well it had some of what president clinton wanted some of what we as republicans wanted and it was good for the economy but the one thing missing now that we insisted on back in one nine hundred ninety seven was cuts to government programs and lest you do that we're going to continue to see the debt. bolu not the way it has been it would seem to me this is going to be an easy toss in the house alan grayson but will there be senate democrats that come on board and will they get sixty votes on this that's a big number yes they'll buzz them one by one that's what they'll do corporations that hand out the ten thousand dollars checks will start writing bigger checks to super pacs and the this by the votes that they need that doesn't make it right alan

medicine ship to puerto rico is proving to be challenging with debris and downed power lines still blocking streets puerto rico's governor says they're also lacking enough drivers to transport the goods senator marco rubio visited puerto rico says challenges on the island are extraordinary some of the areas outside of san juan where there's still no communication and no powers logic tells you there's probably some very critical medical needs that are met in those areas and assuming we can even identify them how do you deliver medicines and lifesaving supplies across roads that might still not be navigable and so the challenge is a storm and it will take a much more aggressive federal reaction than we would traditionally see in order to kind of turn the corner on some of this. hurricane maria was the most devastating and powerful storm to hit puerto rico in more than eighty years an estimated forty four percent of residents on the island still don't have clean drinking water and
