11:02 am
of the women that's how she died and apparently according to passers by he screamed out bar or god is the greatest while he was carrying out that attack now the security services at the station waybill to respond fairly quickly and shot the man dead at the scene and what we understand now is that this is being treated or a probe has been launched in treating this as an anti terror organization and what the prosecutor's office has said in paris is that while the motives are not yet clear what they're doing is that they treating this as a killing linked to a terrorist organization so two women dead including one who had her throat slit by that attacker before the attacker was shot dead at the scene now the security services have been praised for reacting responding so quickly to this attack with officials on the ground saying they fear that this could have been far worse happy nort and the security services are part of some seven thousand troops who are
11:03 am
deployed across france and have been for the last three years as the country has been under a state of high emergency since january two thousand and fifteen that's when the offices of the satirical newspaper. were attacked with twelve people being killed and then the country was put into a state of emergency in november two thousand and fifteen after that deadly night of attacks in paris were around a hundred and thirty people were killed in kuwait. ordinated see recent attacks now since then francis seen a number of attacks including in nice which is also in the south of france and this year in two thousand and seventeen a number of smaller attacks it means now that since january two thousand and fifteen more than two hundred thirty people have been killed in fronts in terror attacks now. current president emanuel wants to end that state of emergency in
11:04 am
france and wants to do so by november of this suggests next month and in fact this week the first draft of his new controversial legislation which will consolidate some of the powers that some of the security forces have had and that state of emergency will be consolidated into their jobs as normal will actually be voted on this week but the latest in france is that the anti terror probe has been launched after two women were killed including one woman who had her throat slit the perpetrator the man who carried out those attacks was shot dead at the scene by the security services. that france correspondent do bensky thank you. meanwhile police in canada are treating the ramming and stabbing of a fellow officer as terror related after finding an eyesore flag in the attackers car the thirty year old driver has been apprehended a manhunt followed the ramming of the officer who was stabbed several times though
11:05 am
his injuries aren't life threatening the driver was stopped later but fled in a truck and hit at least four pedestrians in a high speed police chase through the center of the city well no there so been reported though the condition of the victims is as yet unknown. got to learn is independence referendum is well underway but has been marred by numerous scenes of violence over four hundred sixty people have now been injured in clashes with military police according to barcelona's mina. was. was i thank i was that was. the so it was living in paris and this is not the first
11:06 am
people that disorder to see her in the attic or your bike helmets so disappointing from their early hours of the morning it seems to be escalating was i. was right sunday spanish civil guard officers have been forcing their way into polling stations across the region they've broken down doors as activists inside to try to prevent them from entering with a number of people being dragged away. or police have been using rubber bullets to disperse the protesters this type of ammunition is used worldwide and considered to be non-lethal however they use soft rubber bullets is associated with cases of lungs trauma to the brain damaged organs and these could lead to permanent disability and even death. while the spanish government official has tweeted that police actions are professional and proportionate but some think the videos that have been imagined suggest otherwise. it was. well
11:07 am
hey you can see protesters in sharona in northeastern catalonia facing off against officers demonstrators have their hands up in a sign of nonviolence but police apparently started hitting them with batons and we spoke to one man who was injured in these cash and. we saw there will be trying to take off from your station and we never thought that they would be such a byron's from the police. but to be all people he says it is simply unacceptable we were seeing again we saying not by humans was thing we just want to bolt we're seeing we also sounds funny he does with the props. many people. order before i don't know what they fear exposure but we know one year i was doing nothing i was i'm sitting in them and asking for our freedom what would you say we're not making any distinction at all they were getting
11:08 am
a very what they were not looking at and it's just. another video from castillo here shows police jumping on him violently kicking protesters as well as dragging the activists out of a polling station. where video has also appeared online of officers confiscating ballot boxes and voting papers from a council on polling station with voters trying to stop them. was was. was was was was was. was. was. and these are pictures of police taking the ballot boxes away you can hear people in the background heckling the officers and police also reportedly seized boxes and voting papers in the days leading up to the referendum. when our correspondent in
11:09 am
a question of her was at one of the voting stations in the capital on capital. people over here in barcelona never expected such a violent approach people are in shock really we've got a lot of people here in this neighborhood very close to the polling station that is still operational people are still trying to vote here but we do know that it just two blocks away there was there was another piling station on the other building of the school that was just basically raided by police forces and police forces used force and they were violent and you spoke to several students who managed to ran away from that school and they're over here now they told us that the police forces arrived and they moved real quick and they push people out people tried to lock themselves with them to school to protect the building of the school so they broke the window sills of school and they got inside and they tried forcefully to
11:10 am
remove people out of the school and they were removing them by their hair and they pushed an elderly woman out of a cell eight went of tense and violent real quick what's happening right now is that we are we expected police forces to iraq if crowds are getting bigger and bigger here by the minutes we know that a lot of people came over here from the school that was just raided by police there are a lot of students a lot of young people here there are also families with children we see a lot of elderly people and everyone we can feel the fear within the crowds and people expect police forces to iraq but they keep telling us that they are determined to vote and they're determined to defend their democratic rights and they're determined to stay here and protect the polling station and this country has been mobilizing for the last many years just with these objectives to be able
11:11 am
to express ourselves and to say what do we want to hold for this country for the future he does a mother but it's raining on. to get it out because we love that. we want to we have needed to do extreme actions such as sleeping in score such as coming here hundreds of persons at five o'clock in the morning specially if i have been standing here for hours and we will be here all day if necessary because they don't want to let us speak. or are part. of me while in madrid hedonists have been staging a rally in one of the central squares the activists were waving spanish flags and shouting slogans in support of spanish unity and the national police catalonia is a crucial economic region and this may be one of the main reasons behind the unrelenting opposition over madrid to the independence vote. well catalonia covers six percent of the country's territory but accounts for twenty percent of spain's
11:12 am
g.d.p. the region is also responsible for more than half of all start up investments and almost a quarter of spain's foreign tourists go to catalonia and other key reason why majority so keen to stop the region breaking away. well to discuss this issue further that's now across life to god drink beer offer a former member of the catalan national assembly thank you very much indeed for joining us i mean what we've seen the reaction here we've seen the voters we've seen the spanish authorities they seem pretty uncompromising in their approach to this referendum why do you think that they are so determined to prevent it taking place. well i have to say that it's really a surprise for me i mean we only have the space program and we're. seeing thousands of police officers from his or police officers being. in the last week but it has been quite a surprise because i like boiling all the spies bali's us face to be.
11:13 am
based peaceful resist them by all in the system of people that just feel or sat down in front of them and where i've met by. police brutality that you can see in the moments in which is that you really were asked well do you think that this particular approach that could backfire do you think those people who were perhaps more neutral in their in their in their beliefs or people that had fixed years anyway would be more inclined to go towards independence for cattle and he to think this war hardened the lines on both sides. well that's definitely not stopping anybody from pushing for independence i mean in station i've been all day. everybody was the only two ball and when we were receiving news of the right. dawning on the audience they sure nobody to leave left the police station no why do
11:14 am
you want to leave some point and we actually thought about letting the older people to go away because we were worried about worst beauty of the people but everybody refused to go away as they say they want to vote and they know it's going to go away so i don't think that's going to stop any. anybody. to express their people to go over the years and people. and also i mean it's not only catalonia where they have independent secessionist sentiments within spain what message do you think that madrid is sending out to the rest of spain with this particular this course of action. well basically the. mark asked them about because they we didn't go we thought we have. got the i mean we have the. decision ask them the.
11:15 am
ability basically there was a large. there's been some some box of that that fast. that had been passed on on the. get to the. song we see when we see delays the you go not thought you can or. there's no way do. they all walk or go up the cell phone or whatever. political future of. my one two three four or something initial don't just balding i mean it's not it's not an endeavor known as the bridge and i think it's just that i've walked a referendum you were trained to have sort of people who could express. clearly in on what you were going in spain were not and finally from a i mean we were looking at the reaction here from europe as
11:16 am
a whole and it's been pretty silent actually we don't we don't seem to have had much reaction from the outside do you think if there'd been a situation like we've seen in catalonia today where your soldiers had reacted the way they had there would have been more of an outcry had it been elsewhere in europe. well yes because we always start out the longer goal. and all of europe work on them that strong so we have those actually people. are surprised that there's the you know been you know nice no not mean much nobody can say in anything of that. and. there's definitely a reason i brought up all of the ducky for example did we leave it really there god it been your to have former member of the catalan national assembly thank you for joining us thank. you while police try to stop the voting catalonia our teams here in moscow and barcelona will be updating you about the situation on the ground
11:17 am
throughout the rest of sunday. for. now let's return to our breaking news story from france where prosecutors have launched a terror probe after a knife attack left two women dead in mass a main train station where for more on this story let's cross live now to military this kamaal i love come off thank you for joining us well although the motives aren't yet clear i mean the reports are already calling it a terror attack i mean does this suggest that there are fresh worries over terror after a string of what have been similar attacks. i think so unfortunately this is almost become a weekly occurrence in europe because islamic state loses territory in iraq and syria some of the fighters perhaps will return to europe others will be inspired
11:18 am
this is very difficult to stop these kind of low key attacks. i mean how do you such incidents to happen though when france is terror attack the threat level it's already been at its highest and has been for a while. very hard to stop these kind of attacks because they're not very sophisticated there's not too much planning or communication required for this so any person who has a motivation perhaps is linked to the group in iraq or syria or not even that just goes out and carries out an attack one just needs vigilance and perhaps more international cooperation rather than overt surveillance because this kind of attack is virtually impossible to stop or we've also seen another attack today in canada as well so i mean do you think that the number of such incidents in the west can be partly explained by ourselves growing losses in syria and iraq. definitely shrinks more of the fighters will escape many of them are western
11:19 am
citizens who've been going to fight in iraq in syria for the last six years or they have friends or other people in continental europe or north america which might carry out these attacks and this is to make themselves still relevant and indeed news because obviously on the ground they're losing to syria and iraq so they will carry out more of these attacks to make themselves still in the headlines and looking forward as well i mean should we expect further retaliation after i sell is completely defeated or do you think the terrorists will give up or do you think there's more to come. i think there's more to come especially with these kind of tactics. as i said they're very hard to stop them at the last stages what needs to be done as a strategic response and what we seeing in syria now with the russian military in the syrian government says that the taking back territory from the terrorists i think the international community needs to work with the syrian government and the russians and the iraqi government to tackle terrorism that is the best way because
11:20 am
these go to small attacks will keep increasing unless there's more cooperation in the global strategy on how to fight and stop supporting insurgent groups in other people's countries and finally come on i think just look at some of the tactics that have been used by the terrorists they're using different methods i mean it's now naive than vehicles and their weapons in themselves i mean is that why it's so difficult for the security services to prevent the attacks. this it's very hard to track down who's driving what car or lorry a van and the same knives are a very basic weapon that you can buy anywhere in the supermarket or a grocery store so it's very hard to track unless some of these fights is already on the system but we're already hearing that the french attacks these people on the system and they were already known to authorities that is worrying because that also happened in england well if you know someone is on the system if someone has been to fight in the or the middle east they should be put behind bars rather than
11:21 am
being allowed to roam around freely. the military analysts come out along thank you for your time thank you and coming up after this short break we'll have more on the stories that have shaped this week's news. make manufacture consent to public wealth. when the ruling class isn't protect themselves. we can all middle of the room.
11:22 am
welcome back and now to some of those stories that have shaped the week's news major tech firms are cooperating with u.s. authorities by hunting over information apparently related to russian meddling in the twenty sixteen presidential election in a statement twitter also took a swipe at all it's a juggling video that looks at the latest efforts to root out alleged russian trolls. the internet is now trying its hand at hunting down even the slightest sign
11:23 am
of moscow lurking in the shadows facebook twitter and now google are all gearing up to testify in congress on pesky russian meddling next month. twitter has released a report with that name just made to fill headlines russian interference in two thousand and sixteen u.s. election bots and misinformation now it sounds spooky but the findings are more than a little vague twitter apparently found and shut down a grand total of two hundred one suspicious accounts that broke their spam rules and while russia is mentioned in the report those accounts aren't actually proven to have concrete links to moscow what was clearly laid out however was this channel spending on ads shockingly proving that r.t. uses social media and by his advertisements. facebook released similar findings earlier revealing four hundred seventy in authentic accounts then admitted most ads run by those accounts didn't even reference the u.s. presidential election at all so the kremlin is so sneaky that it was able to rig an election without mentioning the actual election pretty impressive facebook also
11:24 am
said russia spent one hundred thousand dollars on those ads and other words less than one percent of how much candidates spent campaigning on facebook. while stories of how moscow sway u.s. voters with a bunch of social media ads continue to dominate the mainstream media the most shocking social network revelation is all but ignored wiki leaks has posted an email conversation in which facebook's chief operating officer seemingly proposes helping hillary clinton's campaign head. i still want hillary rodham clinton to win badly i'm still here to help as i can i'm thrilled at the progress here louise making. looking forward to working with the first woman president of the united states. google is also accused of having close ties to the clinton camp a leaked memo written by clinton's digital strategist surfaced online. i'm in it he talks about eric schmidt boss of google's parent company and the work that he's
11:25 am
done for clinton i have been kept apprised of the work being done by eric schmidt's group and others working directly and indirectly with your team on the whole i am comfortable with where we stand and confident in our roadmap to launch day and beyond but if you're waiting for these special committees and investigations to be set up into whether facebook or google actually help the clinton camp don't hold your breath just in case but i think it's a which i think they don't care about what hillary was doing and they want to they're very biased against that from pain so far they haven't showed me and that was a that was a pro trump that was paid for by the russian government i just see what's happening in this post-election period as a result of a bunch of sore losers that were shocked that they didn't win the election but i think that the responsibility for us ought to be is what has our government done has our government been involved after they're in power and unfortunately we're
11:26 am
involved too much around the world. in syria government forces are clearing remaining terrorist pockets in. islamic states three year siege of the eastern city was recently broken by the army and allied forces these are exclusive pictures from the western side of the euphrates river where government forces have made key gains driving out i still the russian military has now also established a bridge allowing ahmed cost across the river. the remaining terrorists and areas all are now surrounded by both the syrian army and u.s. backed kurdish forces and this week the russian ministry of defense said these remaining terror pockets will also soon be driven out while i travel to the city to witness the fighting conduct correspondent what i guess the if as this report from the frontline. four out palace once that is sort of most exclusive resort now a modern day fortress out of necessity. for three years the
11:27 am
garrison here has thwarted isis attempts to cross the river at times it was a close run thing and you don't have saudi going on and from the onset coming up to the roof was very dangerous because of the snipers it was really bad but when the army broke the siege they fell back a month ago it would have been suicide to film up here not anymore. these five star hotel seem better days but thanks to its grandiose design and height acted as something of a fortress here indeed as sort and just to show you how close we are if you have a look through this hole at that hospital well everything behind that is isis part of the city of that is or across the river they also hold sway this is all their territory that's the euphrates river and across it is isis it's from there that
11:28 am
they shelled the city at will and from there that they launched the occasional raid across the river taking the other bank is key to liberating the city entirely isis still sends fighters and alms back and forth across the river at night it may take weeks but it is inevitable isis in syria is on its last legs its collapse has been as spectacular as its rise since the beginning of the year the so-called caliph it has lost thousands of square kilometers losing precious oilfields and strategic towns to the advancing syrian army and the u.s. backed rebels that is. not to say it's cool that it will be easy isis has nothing left to lose according to the syrian military and the families of isis fighters and diehard supporters have allegedly retreated to the town of. they have

nowhere else to go in the shrinking caliphate this is the final act in the dream of an islam mix state has been shot but even in its death throes will inevitably claim more lives guys do you have. from that as author syria. to have more news at the top of the. economic development is all about numbers really more of this quarter we heard six point. but what do we know about the other figures. that. were twenty million dollars.
