2:00 pm
right. i. fifty eight people have now been confirmed dead at a las vegas music festival in what's been called the deadliest mass shooting in united states history. islamic state has claimed responsibility for that attack but the federal bureau of investigation is saying that the shooter has no connection at all to any international terrorist group also to come.
2:01 pm
to believe and suppose that's the. prime minister mariano rajoy had to say following the independence referendum in catalonia in which almost nine hundred voters were injured in assaults by military police. very good evening to you my name's neil harvey this is art and. fifty eight people confirmed dead more than five hundred others injured after a gunman went on the rampage at a las vegas music festival the incident has become the deadliest mass shooting in modern u.s. history a warning you may well find the following video disturbing. i
2:02 pm
. i. i. i. i. i shooting took place during an outdoor performance by the country singer jason dean this was a three day music festival in attendance were around twenty two thousand people the government fired the crowds from the thirty second floor of a nearby hotel and casino there were multiple rounds of rapid fire witnesses say it lasted somewhere between five and ten minutes and here's how some of the witnesses that we spoke to describe what they'd seen.
2:03 pm
and we can show you another video now from the scene of people taking shelter in a tent at the festival as they heard multiple shots outside. i i i i. i. yeah panic and confusion i clear to say we spoke to an eyewitness called abdi he told us how people were scared but had to remain quiet as nobody knew if the
2:04 pm
shooting was still close by. the time i was actually working security at the. capitol as i walked away from my post which i'm glad that i did and where i was supposed to be standing was actually there for me was in front of the main stage where the jury of this stuff was happening and. i left my post and i remember walking towards my friends when i heard the first round of gunshots and i thought to myself that it was the music when the second round of gunshots came it was clear that it was gunshots and it wasn't the music messing still once i heard that i seen people started running i could do it we just dropped everything and just rent. there was police officers maturities everywhere i actually ran into a complex and just remember going inside this guy's house and there was a whole bunch of people already in there and they had all the lights turned off and
2:05 pm
they were telling everyone to be quiet because he was still nearby and we didn't know if the shooter is walking around or not from nine hundred ninety six until june of this year the united states a c. one hundred thirty mass shootings almost nine hundred adults and one hundred forty five children have been killed but these numbers don't include the latest massacre in las vegas and there are question marks over what is officially classed as a mass shooting with more is on the scale of open. the attacker has been identified as steven craig paddick a sixty four year old man in his hotel room he apparently had ten different rifles now when the swat team broke into the hotel room from which he was shooting at the concert attendees they they determine that he was already dead it appears that mr paddick took his own life after opening fire and killing fifty eight people outside the concert at this point he's being referred to as a lone wolf the ice still terrorists have claimed responsibility for the attack and
2:06 pm
said that the shooter was associated with them but the f.b.i. disagrees and says that no link to any international terrorist group can be established we have determined to this point no connection with an international terrorist group as this investigation continues we will continue to work with our partners to ensure that this is factually thoroughly and absolutely investigated now the shooter did live in a retirement village just outside of las vegas and in the home of the shooter it is apparent that there was some additional ammunition law enforcement is saying that they don't really have a profile on this person meaning that he did not do anything to attract the attention of law enforcement prior to his act the shooter's alleged girlfriend a sixty two year old a stray and woman is considered to be a person of interest in police investigations the police say that at this point they have many hours of surveillance footage from security cameras to look over to determine exactly how the shooter was able to bring the ten different firearms to
2:07 pm
his hotel room now following incidents like this there's almost always a cry for gun control is fifty eight people dead this is being called the largest mass shooting in modern u.s. history let's take a look over some of the incidents that have taken place over the last few years in the united states. it was mentioned that the f.b.i. has said that it has found no link to any international territory despite eisel
2:08 pm
having claimed responsibility from f.b.i. agents and global security training consultant james cole my belief that the massacre in las vegas doesn't bear the whole marks of an isolated. we've seen this in the past and isis does this they claim responsibility for a number of things around the globe because of their desperate situation but there are and it's early in the game the f.b.i. the police will drill down in social media they'll drill down on the subjects who was involved in the shooting they'll drill down on all of his connections his e-mail and so forth and they'll make a determination if there was a terrorist ideology behind this but at this point it doesn't appear to be he certainly doesn't meet the profile of an islamic jihad as terrorist and you may rest assured if there are any pertinent developments in this story of the shooting in las vegas will bring information straight.
2:09 pm
now in other news almost nine hundred cattle and voters were injured in assaults by military police that was during the spanish region's independence referendum on sunday the dritte deems the vote to be illegal but spite its efforts to stop the referent of are actually going ahead the catherine government has already published the results with ninety percent of voters supporting catalonia as break away from spain the spanish prime minister addressed this country just minutes before the end of the referendum which he denied that even taken place. or you don't. build that i mean if you think of them. we have been. one of those you would oppose that she would go the list of. you're not you're not one of your human. emotions on the simple but i don't.
2:10 pm
violence erupted moments after the polling station tad opened people were still standing in line to vote is a recap for you of what transpired on sunday. well
2:11 pm
the way that civil guard officers try to disperse the crowd has raised concern understandably here you can see people holding up rubber bullets that were fired into the crowd madrid claims the police response was professional and proportionate do you think so take a look at some of the videos that a spark quite an outcry in the public first of all this is peaceful protesters facing the police the demonstrators you can see it here the hands held above their heads a sign of nonviolence we're not a threat the officers though clearly seen hitting them with their batons this incident took place in your own northeastern catalonia another video has also sparked outrage this one i'm going to show you but i must warn you might find it distressing it appears to show one of the officers trying to remove a woman and actually twisting her wrist in the process the woman there claims that her fingers were broken and done so intentionally after a day of wide scale violence in catalonia the protesters have been taking their action to the streets there decrying this police brutality as they see it r t
2:12 pm
correspondent dina cocina has seen it one such rally in barcelona. this is not like that only elsewhere as you can see the protests continue here on the iconic sware of the barcelona says he hundreds of students had gathered behind my back to against protest. the events that we saw here on sunday they're protesting for the independence of catalonia they're clapping they're shouting slogans including goodbye mr president good bye mary i don't doubt for you now there are trying to remain peaceful and they're also protesting against the violence unprecedented crackdown on polling stations that we saw on sunday and indeed there are a lot of unhappy people here on the streets of wasilla. we didn't deserve this kind of treatment i think our people deserve more freedom and not the oppression that madrid is putting us under we have seen a lot of repression against the people people who are just waiting in line ready to
2:13 pm
vote so i have seen brutal scenes on the part of police on the side his rights have no place children and now the a.p. points front of the potent stations. some of my friends were in schools building barricades to defend the polling stations from police forces my friend told me that he was grabbed by police and this one he wanted. he was also hit in the head but i think these facts should be made known to the public. we have been receiving more reaction coming out from the consul on the story to us this monday now the presidential council said that the government has decided to create a special commission to investigate the events of sunday and to create a special commission to investigate possible crimes against humanity that might have taken place here are over the weekend he also believes that in order to find a compromise between madrid and barcelona independent party is needed so as you can see the comp the situation here is so complicated that even authorities are ready
2:14 pm
to acknowledge that there are unable to find a way out without the house and now there are independent sides now the president of consul demands that the forces of national police will leave the region he says that for many years. and many times people have cancelled on your work protesting and never there has been violence on the streets so it is really the biggest constitutional crisis spain has seen in decades and it really seems that it is time now for both parties to sit down and try to negotiate in order to avoid further escalation. deputies from the european union of now proposed holding a session over what happened in catalonia but european officials have remained largely silent previously stressing that the issue is an internal one for spain and his police has been taking stock of the international response. well it's been quite a muted european reaction the european commission has finally come out with a statement today but it condemned the violence but backed up madrid in reiterating
2:15 pm
that the referendum in catalonia was illegal under the spanish constitution yesterday's vote to cut the loan you know was not legal this is an internal mother for spain that has to be dealt with in line with the constitutional order of spain well essentially we can see the e.u. there sticking to the same line it's had all along in the run up to the vote as well and journalists in brussels have had a lot of questions about the e.u.'s tongue tied response to the crisis in catalonia now will you have a double standard in the freedom of this british whilst found out for. another for. you condemn it when they shut down cambodia daily would you stay silent when a member states starts playing with freedom of expression should private websites
2:16 pm
if they start arresting jewelries how can you say this is a constitutional that we don't have anything to say i mean this is presumably expression anything else that we're going to help you with today where you can see the spokes person squirming there and there is a sense that collectively european leaders are squirming over this crisis as well there's a degree of discomfort is seems a few have come out and condemn the violence the belgian prime minister the slovenian one but critics say that overall the response has been much milder than say it would have been if this crisis was unfolding in a new european member states say hungry or somewhere like vogue area now in terms of the media reaction sky news has drawn a bit of attention to itself for a tweet that many people. i have said it was inappropriate you can see it up on your screens now it said the people of catalonia are finding out what happens when
2:17 pm
an illegal referendum is held the tweet was deleted soon after it was put up but not before quite a few people managed to screengrab it and express a lot of anger about it as well people online have accused the news outlets of supporting what they see as violent oppression in catalonia others have called it disgraceful some have called it fascist at the very least it does seem unfortunately word it carries sort of an air of i told you so about it there's a suggestion in it of some sort of political alignment to madrid side of the argument and probably a degree of insensitivity given that some nine hundred people in catalonia were injured in clashes with the spanish police yesterday. can discuss we now with the you know he's a european parliament member for a mile and
2:18 pm
a very kind of you to join me this evening so much to talk about but i want to start with mariano rajoy because he's played this so cool in the sense that he saw no evil he speaks no evil he saw nothing wrong with what transpired yesterday he says that spring was set an example without a deal with the referendum or illegal as he sees it but there were plenty of scenes of brutality that need no explanation do you think it was a good example. i would just love it if spanish administration come together collectively and read a history book let's make no mistake about what we all witnessed yesterday we saw a need new member state government deploy a police force to physically and violently prevent people from actually voting no make no mistake about it had this happened in the middle east or in south america or if it happened as was mentioned in europe or in some of the newer member states we would have. leaders lining up with the most vicious words of condemnation it's
2:19 pm
not good enough the response from the your opinion has been pathetic it's quite clear to me that democracy talk a big hit yesterday but so too has in the intervene and hours the credibility of the european union itself because this is to my mind great threat to democracy but it's also a threat to law in order to every sense of justice european people feel that european leaders preach across the world and it's happening right in the heart of europe as you say your government has gone to extreme lengths that are more reminiscent of dark past eras gone by your own took a bit more about the reaction i have to say the lack of it because the silence was absolutely deafening in the spokesperson the e.u. commission really didn't have anything to say what could he say but should they be held to account now the top officials do they forget that politicians are there to
2:20 pm
represent and to protect the people and they're just turning a blind eye big one to all of this. the response of the european union collectively has been pathetic and including member states and countries who should know better are all my own. prime minister leverage car in ireland some money comes from a contract that battle for its own independence should be today lead in the front calling for south determination and for their very existence of democracy in catalonia to be upheld and protected unfortunately the best we've got from many european leaders is condemnation of the place violence absolutely doc should be the very force thing but i think now we need to move it to the next level we need to be saying that you cannot possibly have a situation where somebody says that it will be forever and a terribly illegal or contrary to the terror meant by it by democratic by. means of referendum to decide its own its own future so it's not good enough it's not something that i can accept i think it's not something that the vast majority
2:21 pm
of european union citizens can accept because as i mentioned right across the world of this was happening anywhere else there would be revulsion and there would be stronger statements possible comment from e.u. leaders and unless they match those same type of words and responses to this instance well then they will be forever seen as hypocrites whenever they try to intervene or x. dollars democratic values on another part of the world. really appreciate you taking the time to come on my co-author is my guest from ireland thank you. now one of the news a top u.s. congressman clothes that he was prevented from talking to president about a possible deal with julian assange on the correspondence the recount has the story . it has only recently emerged that republican congressman dana rohrabacher contacted the white house trying to negotiate a deal that would pardon julian assange in exchange for evidence that russia wasn't
2:22 pm
the source of the d.n.c. hacks and the congressman claims he's been trying to bring this to president trump's attention but wasn't allowed to do so by staffers it's an undercutting of democracy when the guy who is elected his staffers take it upon themselves to make the decision rather than let the actual president make the decision when asked about a possible deal with assad president donald trump told reporters he hadn't heard anything about it now julian assange is the founder of wiki leaks the website that's been responsible for releasing tons of information much of it very embarrassing for the u.s. government has been hiding it from extradition in the ecuadorian embassy in the u.k. for the last five years now a white house official confirmed that more about her talked to white house chief of staff john kelly about his plan however kelly reportedly turned him down and said that the plan should be left up to the intelligence committee congressman rohrabacher believes the president's aides are preventing president trump from learning about the possibility of a deal with a sanch this would have to be a cooperative effort between his own stuff and the leadership in the intelligence
2:23 pm
communities to try to prevent the president from making the decision as to whether or not he wants to take the steps necessary to expose this horrendous lie that was shoved down the american people's throats so incredibly earlier this year by this live a congressman is most likely referring to russian collusion speculation that russia was responsible for the d.n.c. hack assad has always insisted it was non-state actors who leaked the d.n.c. files to wiki leaks now according to congressman rohrabacher a songe is ready to tell the truth but it looks like washington doesn't want to hear it. don't trump has downplayed recent remarks made by secretary of state who called for a diplomatic solution to the north korea crisis the us president says that negotiations with pyongyang are a waste of time if you do get pics of the story. for the past two months the world has been watching the escalating tensions on the korean peninsula and while some in the trumpet ministration continue to strive for a diplomatic solution the president himself sees those efforts as useless. i told
2:24 pm
rex tillerson our wonderful secretary of state that he's wasting his time trying to negotiate with little rocket man so term things negotiating with north korea is a waste of time honestly adding that the u.s. will do what has to be done the u.s. secretary of state rex tillerson was in china talking with top diplomats there and trying to find ways to ease the nuclear tensions i think the whole situation is a bit overheated rights now i think everyone would like for it to calm down obviously it would help if north korea would stop firing of missiles that have come things down a little but it's seemingly impossible for things to calm down with trump lashing out and insulting north korea and almost every chance he gets we are totally prepared for the second option totally destroying north korea that's called the military option by their theory a military option like the world has never seen devastating. deficit devastating
2:25 pm
never see the rocket man mad man is on a suicide mission for himself rocket man shooting rockets all over the place suicide mission for himself he has been very aggressive should have been handled a long time ago that's called the military option by fury it will be handled we handle everything over the weekend u.s. trails were again carried out in the south china sea and all that is within washington's rights to conduct those drills many have called for them to be paused for the time being at least given how they currently provoke p.r. netting but despite terms insults and international disapproval of his handling of the situation some in washington still speak highly of his diplomatic skills i think the pick the president is an effective communicator i think people know exactly where he stands we have had a good deal of success in pushing forward with our diplomacy campaign that hasn't changed one thing that definitely hasn't changed is the deadlock in the north
2:26 pm
korean crisis and the world's level waiting to see what exactly trump leaves has to be done. police in san francisco have broken the logs and entered the residence of the russian consulate general in the city sparking an angry reaction from the foreign ministry in moscow russian diplomats and their families vacated the building a day ago as part of the diplomatic tit for tat with washington let's get more on the story now from the drinker elizabeth as i understand the premises have been vacated does that mean this is the end of the of the spat. neil good evening well you know it was quite an experience to watch how the authorities on the scene were acting the people who are responsible for this final seizure of the russian diplomatic premises in san francisco what they did was first they put a covering of blue covering over the gates and then the door and then apparently broke the logs so it seems that the police didn't when the didn't really want the
2:27 pm
journalists that were there who gathered in the area to see what was going on and the places that you can see were actually the homes for the people who used to work at the russian consulate in san francisco that was the very consulate that washington ordered to shut down about a month ago with only two days notice and the thing the promises that the russian foreign ministry also lost a war or two trade mission buildings in washington d.c. and new york now all this is part of a diplomatic war that we have seen for quite some time right now being fought by the u.s. government and the russian government and usually these kind of things remember resemble ping-pong when one side hits the ball and then they get an immediate head back from the other side of the table but there was even a period in that confrontation when moscow wasn't willing to retaliate at the end
2:28 pm
of his storm barack obama expelled thirty five russian diplomats for america but a lot of our putin did nothing the russian government wanted to leave all the obama era negativity behind and move on with the donald trump administration but under mr trump the still it never disappeared we saw the anti russian sanctions bill being side in congress that some are being. adopted i should say rather than. donald trump of course signed it russia and retaliation reduced the number of u.s. diplomatic presence in russia to four hundred fifty five members of staff and then of course and the very late august washington and now it's that it was going to take the washing consulate from san francisco and the other properties now of course this is an immensely tough period for us wash relations and earlier we heard
2:29 pm
the russian foreign minister sergei lavrov say that it wasn't that initiated all this and that he deeply regret it that the latest reaction from the russian officials is of course they still see these actions as a violation of international law the russian side never accepted the decision to close the premises mainly the consulate in san francisco and what the russian top diplomats are saying right now the latest statement has appeared on their website is that they reserve the right to respond to this because rather today a correspondent thank you and thanks you guys i was staying with there's more news at the top of the hour. being when it was only about maintaining peace between states as an essentially symbol.
