hundred twenty seven people are injured here in las vegas and it's still a very active scene all around monterey bay hotel authorities are still picking up the pieces as we speak and kareen all of the dead bodies. as you have right now all of the first confirmed fatalities have been have been recovered and they have been transported to our office yes. i believe that that includes the shooter but again that's that number could be fluid so you know where that number unfortunately may go up and i don't want to give an exact number and confirmation at this point. ok thank you sheriff. now sixty four year old stephen paddick had sixteen firearms in his hotel room including two rifles with scopes law enforcement says that two of his run foals were modified to be fully automatic we understand that those rifles were powered so
8:06 pm
that they were able to pierce through police armor and he also was using a high capacity magazines according to investigators and also a modified bomb stock rifle was found in his hotel room as well authorities also raided his home in mosquito and another eight hundred firearms explosives and thousands of rounds of ammunition and patrick reportedly rented two different hotel rooms at the mandalay bay hotel one facing north the other one facing the east and authorities say they're not sure whether or not he used a sledgehammer to smash out the window so that he could get his sniper like position to take out the you know horrific shooting that did occur and we understand that authorities have gotten contact with two different gun shop owners and mosquito who have confirmed that they have sold firearms to patrick and of course both of them said that they have sold everything legally to him once that they sold him a shotgun no word on if any of those firearms were used in the actual shooting and
8:07 pm
we understand that patrick had somewhat of a gambling issue he would spend up to ten thousand twenty thousand even thirty thousand dollars in one day at a las vegas casino and so we understand her there pursue no casino gambling executives that he was there frequently and so again this case is very much being investigated lot of moving parts here but of course we will continue to update you as those developments come in thank you natasha president tried to address the nation this morning in the wake of the las vegas shooting the president emphasized the need for the country to pull together in a time of sadness shock and grief. my fellow americans. we are joined together today in sadness shock and grief last night a gunman opened fire on a large crowd at a country music concert in las vegas nevada he brutally

murdered more than fifty people. and wounded hundreds more it was an act of pure evil the f.b.i. and the department of homeland security are working closely with local authorities to assist with the investigation and they will provide updates as to the investigation and how it develops i will be visiting las vegas on wednesday to meet with law enforcement first responders and the families of the victims in moments of tragedy and horror. america comes together as one and it always has we call upon the bonds that unite us our faith our family and our shared values we call upon the bonds of citizenship the ties of community
8:09 pm
and the comfort of our common humanity our unity cannot be shattered by evil our bonds can not be broken by violence and though we feel such great anger at the senseless murder of our fellow citizens it is our love that defines us today and always will for ever in time such is these i know we are searching for some kind of meaning in the us some kind of light in the darkness the answers do not come easy. but we can take solace knowing that even the darkest space can be brightened by a single light and even the most terrible despair can be illuminated by a single ray of hope for more on how the president and authorities are handling
8:10 pm
this tragedy we go live tonight to nevada state senator dick segre bloom senator nice to have you with us this evening under these circumstances i know it's not easy. give us if you don't know any back conversation of authorities tonight of what a possible motive might have been of the shooter is there any conversation of that . there is that there's lots of discussion but honestly given the guy's background there is there doesn't seem to be an explanation for why other than the just the location in the particular concert there how do you think the president did today in how is his speech being received in las vegas. well i think everyone here respects the president see. you know truthfully given his background and going to there are a convention and stuff like that it's it's pretty it's just a property. how is los vegas going to recover from this you have a long history there your thoughts tonight as almost twenty four hours after this
8:11 pm
horrific event. we will get over it you know but we are going to have to start looking at that at a lot of these events that we do new year's eve and things like that on the strip public events so we're worried about shooters from other hotels and things but in the day this is something has happened throughout the country and and move on with it but i think some point we need to address the real issue which is we just got to hear guns out of people's hands in in las vegas are they going to rethink security what do you expect. we have the best secure in the world and we're always planning for this type of event maybe not exactly like this but what we really you know the . that's what we do is think about this so i'm sure they'll learn from this and start to worry about in the future how many people take luggage up to the stairs and things like that and watching outside the buildings but you can't prevent everything but will definitely take learn from it learn from this experience
8:12 pm
senator and many people refer to nevada as the wild wild west when it comes to gun laws there may be a federal discussion but will this push forward any type of state discussion on gun laws. it will we've actually been the center of a lot of this case the last few years we passed a bill requiring background checks the governor vetoed a few sessions ago this last year of two thousand and sixteen the voters approved background checks and the attorney general's refused to implement it so we've been ground zero for trying to push forward on gun legislation but this will certainly go back to the forefront and this is something you have to keep fighting for well that's no next question do you think this will reignite a fierce debate in the battle i hope so i hope the guy won here and also around the country we just have to say enough is enough that you can this cannot be tolerated
8:13 pm
and and somebody says to stand up and say in this country this is not acceptable whatever it takes let's just do it senator we've seen police officers shot from a sniper in dallas some months ago at that time did security in las vegas authorities ever think about something like this ever happening in vegas. you know i've i honestly think we've thought about almost everything you never know exactly how it's going to go down until it happens but you know that we have people that's all they do is think about this because we're such a you know so many people concert strip and we're such a tourist mecca that we know that it's a good target for people who are trying to make a name for themselves or get some type of exposure so this is this is of them we planned for we worry about but as you saw yesterday and we can prevent everything in senator segre room pre-shared your time tonight thanks so much the best to you the las vegas community has given an overwhelming response to local hospitals
8:14 pm
calling for blood donations for the victims of last night's shooting tragedy hundreds of potential donors have lined up outside of las vegas donations centers hoping to donate blood to over five hundred people injured in the attack authorities are urging donors to make reservations to expedite their trip to donation centers we have been to lose with donations people bringing sandwiches bringing water bring blankets bringing those sort of things it's also the point we can't handle anymore donations at the convention center the sheriff i spoke to earlier regarding the blood donations that we brought that out of this morning with a sheriff and i talked and we put out a call for blood and we have a sixty eight hour wait at all of our blood centers right now donations are being given appointments are being made for thursday and friday that's how far in advance we are. meanwhile the las vegas police department is helping family members locate their missing loved ones if you or anyone you know is looking to locate
8:15 pm
a loved one who was in las vegas at the time of the shooting or at the event authorities are asking you to call one eight six six five three five fifty six fifty four again that's one eight six six five three five fifty six fifty four for more on how nevada in the city of las vegas are responding to the tragedy we turn now to a native of the city and friend of ours here heidi harris conservative commentator as she has done a lot in las vegas knows the community years of talk radio heidi i'm sorry to impose upon you i know this is a very emotional time and so i want to call on you to just give us your thoughts tonight on how could this ever happen in your town i know you're feeling that tonight. it's just so shocking and you know it when you think about it we've got about forty million people who come here and you only and on
8:16 pm
a weekend we've got about three hundred thousand usually in the town and i want to give a kudos to the security guys at all these hotels everyone has a great security staff and you don't see them necessarily because they're not wearing uniforms and they prevent so many things from happening that we don't hear about in the public i know about some of that because i know people that business that kind of thing so it's a miracle that something like this hasn't happened before or what's amazing is that this guy was able to get into the hotel with we're hearing now reports of ten suitcases and i could see one or two but a guy with ten suitcases and you know how much am away so there are a lot of questions about that clearly he planned it he picked the room he had some actual purchase that he built in there as we could stand up and get a good shot and the scariest thing ed and i know you go through the same thing when you think about this in the media we're looking for the lesson here right what can we do to prevent this from happening the next time and as of now nobody knows why this guy went crazy and we're not going to say he snapped because he methodically planned what he did so nobody really knows the reason at this point that's scary
8:17 pm
very profound point i mean this was premeditated and then when they searched his home of found an arsenal with explosives i mean this guy had certainly planned something on a big level and then he carried it out what is this idea and you worked in this industry in las vegas the service industry for some time you had to suppose that hotels are going to be making some changes in the wake of those. you know it's interesting ed you've been to vegas many times you understand how these casinos are for those who don't you've got a lot of entrances you've got the parking garage you've got the strip and all that kind of thing and one of the great things about las vegas is you can walk from casino to casino down the strip with a cocktail in your hand it's perfectly legal here and that's one of the things that we you know make a lot of money on the free flow of people and i'm not sure how you stop that if every time somebody walks into a casino you check their bag their backpack whatever and that's going to be very very detrimental now on new year's eve they don't get around no backpacks on the
8:18 pm
strip they're very picky no glass very very picky about security on the strip on new year's eve but nobody ever thought about this or certainly not that they made public somebody with one in one of those hotels overlooking the strip on new year's eve and now there's a whole other level of concern and it's pretty scary i think it's definitely going to change the way we approach outdoor venues we have a lot of them here because the weather is great most of the year and so it's pretty scary especially considering mandalay bay was across the street from this it wasn't like it was right next door is across the street so it's crazy so much to discuss heidi thank you for joining us tonight will visit again all the best for shit things that ations grief is likely to give way in a few days to another intense debate over gun control in this country hillary clinton took the chance to respond immediately saying politicians need to stand up to the national rifle association for more in the future of the gun control debate we turn tonight to mitt caesar former florida state democratic chair mitch nice to
8:19 pm
have you with us tonight i'm sorry about the circumstances but there will be a debate on this what do you anticipate on the heels of several tweets today from senator blumenthal and also senator murphy you were very close to sandy hook no laws were passed or anything changed after that and now this what are your expectations. you know and i would have thought after sandy hook with all those kids passing away those little babies president obama got emotional and started to cry as we all would you would things something would happen you know quite a pack a man with a poll saying that by a ninety two to seven margin the american voters the american people are in favor of rational gun control and of that ninety to seventy eighty six percent were republicans and by a slightly less a majority republicans even supported you know getting rid of the assault weapons in the manner they are now we haven't done anything i'm frustrated every day you
8:20 pm
know i got a letter today from the president of a florida league of women voters not a radical group and we cosigned by a gun control group in florida and i want to remember the quote exactly it was something to the effect that we do not elect our government of officials just to be able to keep them in our thoughts and our prayers and that was the quote and i agree and that shows the anger the frustration we have not moved past sandy hook we've done nothing i applaud secretary clinton for talking about that and she talked about a few other issues in reference to some legislation being proposed to. to try to muzzle go to you don't hear them with silencers i'm actually going to you know we need to take to the streets literally this will not be the last greatest bands occur they will come again and again well you mentioned the poll numbers they're
8:21 pm
staggering americans want change but what's it going to take to end the hostage taking of the national rifle association because no elected official wants to go home and be vilified by hundreds of thousands of dollars on television ad campaigns that in a sense way voters what about that. i think it's going to have to end up almost like a social movement seriously like women's rights were civil rights it's going to have to take to the streets it's going to have to make enough people scared if the deaths of well these people a little children are going to do we're going something's wrong with this country and the fact that the n.r.a. has a stranglehold frankly on most republicans in congress and the few moderates are beginning to retire i think it's going to be have to be an activist movement i see no other choice i'm frustrated and guilt ridden is i'm sure rio caesar always a pleasure nice to have you with us tonight thoughtful conversation thank you thank

police from seizing ballot boxes in what the spanish government calls an illegal vote military and joins us tonight for more of the details this is heated it's getting hot and last night spanish police used to taunt and rubber bullets and other methods of crowd control that we might be used to. to here in the u.s. but certainly more uncommon in spain and across europe last night more than two point two million catalogs voted for independence from spain but crowds were met by police and other federal authorities who claim the local cut the lawn government performed illegal actions voters were violently dragged out stomped on beaten by spanish forces but many council say the time has come for their independence. you know now this is a real shame but please do that was disproportionate so i think this could have been avoided with. the government rejected the dialogue and it was beautiful what
8:26 pm
people did. that union i saw in barcelona in general and. i loved it but this is a general shame for us that we're talking about roughly twelve thousand square miles northeast parts of spain known as catalonia barcelona is considered the capital of that region it's home to more than seven and a half million people and accounts for about twenty percent of the spanish g.d.p. so it's no surprise that the spanish government wouldn't be up for their secession and spanish prime minister mario no real jorge told press that the cut the lines were fooled into taking part in an illegal vote leaders have also spoken out condemning the violence however still backing the spanish government independence leaders though say the catalans have spoken and have won their right to independence and now at it wasn't just the protesters and voters clashing with the police either in her own
