11:00 pm
my pepto new host of america. west. on the news tonight the investigation continues in las vegas as the country comes to grips with the worst shooting in modern day history and the president hands out supplies while promising local officials more help on a visit to puerto rico today and tens of thousands take to the streets of barcelona as a catalonia clay or as a general strike i michel's reporting tonight from washington d.c. this is the news on our team america.
11:01 pm
good evening friends we start tonight with the country coming to grips with the detestable tragedy in las vegas officials confirmed today it was nine minutes of hell on earth before the shooting and it fifty nine are dead and five hundred thirty have been injured and the ongoing investigation is on baling some unbelievable facts cmon del rosario brigand's our coverage tonight with the very latest simone and we're talking about nine minutes of continuous shooting and while law enforcement has not told us specifically what weapons were used for this attack we are getting our first look from inside of that hotel room. photos right they are linked. a local affiliate out of los vegas showing inside the hotel are in the kind
11:02 pm
of machinery that you can see there there were guns around the floor and tons of ammunition now law enforcement did not officially release these photos but it was leaked to the media clark county sheriff did mention that at least one weapon was outfitted with a bump stop which would enable the shooter to increase that ammunition discharge up to hundreds of rounds a minute interesting thing we learned today from law enforcement the shooter set up cameras inside his hotel suite and outside in the hallway now authorities don't know if he was transmitting at the time of the shooting that is investigating that but the sheriff thought that the shooter might have used those cameras to watch for people approaching his room i want to share two stories of heroes tonight those who stayed and help the injured even under active gunfire and those that ran to the hotel to confront the gunman this is what clark county sheriff joseph lombardo had to say about those who went to mandalay bay i want to say kudos to those officers
11:03 pm
that got together and said this is what we train for you have to shoot or we're put your no move together let's go and gauges the individual ok ok and that's what we did and when the security officer was engaged by the suspect we backed off for media apprehension and swat team formed media interest so as you heard right there the shooter was shooting through his hotel room out into the hallway hitting that security guard as the sheriff mentioned and when authorities had eventually broken into that hotel room he had killed himself now here's what investigators have found so far in that hotel room twenty three firearms nineteen more in his home in misc in the hotel room multiple loaded high capacity magazines which lead law enforcement to the conclusion he could have inflicted even more destruction and death they also found several pounds of ammonium nitrate in his car it can be used as explosives it's most commonly found in fertilizer now a separate search warrant for a reno home that he owns they found five more here. guns two shotguns and
11:04 pm
a plethora of ammunition now the killer's main home is in mosquita nevada that's where he lived with his girlfriend it's about eighty miles away from the los vegas strip that girlfriend sixty two year old mary lou danley she was out of the country at the time of the shooting as of today law enforcement says she is still a person of interest and they will be talking with her once she gets back into the country that's going to be as early as wednesday we hear she is cooperating with authorities i want to get back to the stories of these heroes now so many people with different backgrounds plugging bullet wounds with fingers transporting bodies themselves the international association of firefighters said they had dozens of off duty members in the audience that night they stayed to help twelve of those were shot two of them while performing c.p.r. working on strangers trying to save lives one firefighter jesse gomez was in clark with car clowney he was running out with his wife with the gunfire when he saw a woman on the ground she was bleeding from her head he didn't know if she had been shot or not he stopped and a few people carried her out and he decided in that moment he needed to stay this
11:05 pm
is what he said i called my wife and i told her i was going to. go home and choose crying and she said i had a key so i ran back to the car and i under the keys and she begged me not to go. probably one of the hardest decisions i ever made but she knew i had to go. and now these are the stories that we need to remember as we continue to hear more about this investigation but as far as the investigation goes right now for law enforcement it's not adding up why the shooter would do it he apparently obtained these firearms legally he underwent all the necessary background checks there were no red flags he does not have a criminal history authorities so far don't think he has any history of mental health illness or extreme political or religious ideology so a lot will continue to unfold and law enforcement is pleading with the media and with the public to be patient this is going to take time and the fact that the
11:06 pm
place cameras i mean in the number of firearms and ammunition i mean this was premeditation at the highest level no question about it but what is curious is that you monium nitrate i'm surprised that would not have raised a flag him getting that because he's not a farmer right and so there are just so many unanswered questions as this investigation goes forward thank simone pre-shared it for more on how the community is reacting on the ground in las vegas we cross live now to host of watching the hawks tyrrel ventura tyrrell great to have you with us tonight from las vegas you're i think experiencing the seeing firsthand the emotional strain that that community is going through what struck you today. you know what really struck me at is that this is not the vagas that i think you and i have seen in our past and coming here that anybody who's ever made a trip out here or seen on t.v. this is of baggage that that is almost kind of going through the motions of being bagus you know you see people at the at the roulette tables you. you see tourists
11:07 pm
walking the streets taking pictures but it you you almost get the sense that they're they're doing it with this tremendous emotional weight everything on the tips of everybody's tongues is what happened earlier this week and no one cannot talk about it and it's here and it's weighing down hard on this community but people are still out there still seeing the sites they're still gambling they're still doing that now you know you are seeing people and taking selfies with mandalay bay behind them and doing some things i think some people would be a little questionable but it definitely is a combat community that feels like it's been got punched tyrrel what do you hear from local officials about future security measures is there talk in the community about that. well right now i think most of the hotels i mean in talking to a few people at the hotel where i'm staying you know they said you know basically we're keep we're going to keep going with what we're doing until somebody you know
11:08 pm
comes along with a better idea or you really you know when you think about most of these hotels they're you know they have cameras everywhere they're very secure because they have so much money exchanging hands it really is kind of about one shot once in a tragic once in a lifetime deal that took place here at the same time i think it's important for people to understand that instead of you know everyone else kind of telling bagus what they should do next i think it's going to be more important for us to listen to what bagus if the community wants to do next and what they want from everyone as opposed to us telling them all right with us tonight from las vegas tyrrel ventura tyrrell thanks so much in the coming days investigators will look at the psychological profile of steven patrick what we know as of now suggests that he was fairly average guy no criminal record no history of mental disease addict like to gamble and he was also very well off and even wired one hundred thousand dollars to his girlfriend in the philippines the week before the tragedy for more on this
11:09 pm
let's turn to knight a former cia officer jack rice jack nice to have you on with us tonight in these tragic times stephen paddick clearly had some pretty big issues but nobody knew about it your thoughts on that. yeah that's really the difficult aspect of this right now is why why is that that somebody who seemingly had everything and everything to live for would go down this path as you put it and rightfully so this was carefully drawn out carefully planned carefully premeditated think of all of the effort that he went through to acquire all of the weapons all of the ammunition and then decide this was the spot to bring all of this weaponry with him into this hotel this was not a simple process he knew exactly what he was doing he knew exactly why he was doing it and yet at this point we know that law enforcement has little to nothing to go on because well this doesn't fit the average profile of
11:10 pm
a mass shooter it just doesn't match really much of anything that we've seen in the past and and jack what we're seeing on the screen right now is the forensic team on the scene in las vegas working the site of the shooting so they are certainly. and turning every single stone and piece of evidence that they can possibly find what happened habits are consistent with a person who would do something like this and you're profiling as a cia officer what kind of habits are consistent with a person who would do this. well again if you think about somebody who would typically have done this you would expect generally speaking a white male in their thirty's frequently we have seen this with anti social behavior again we've seen this with hate groups we've seen these with with. racial elements to them and again we've also seen this with those tied to various terrorist organizations and that is much different than this we're looking at somebody who has had multiple criminal convictions or at least contact with law
11:11 pm
enforcement we haven't seen that issue either and you know part of the problem here ed is that you can see the police are out looking at forensics but right now they can track where all of these weapons were acquired in fact all of these were acquired legally so the problem is you can do all the forensics he what he had these things because well at least at this point he had the right to have them there's really no talk of his medical history by any of the investigators or law enforcement i found that interesting that they would even mention that and also i think in our society just about everybody especially at his age would own a computer there's been no conversation from law enforcement about a computer being recovered or even revealing what is on it what do you make of that . well you know i want to start with the mental illness part of this and his health history because as i looked and i heard about this i started thinking about orlando i thought about manchester i thought about the bombings that took place in paris
11:12 pm
and elsewhere and you can go on word in to every other a mass effort i've seen here and there were the one common nexus was generally mental illness and the potential for exploitation hence we saw. others go after them but in this particular case i think that's a real issue that has to be dug into because that is really consistent here because this kind of behavior doesn't just happen and it doesn't jack rice great to have you with us tonight thanks so much for your insight. the vast majority of americans want gun laws in this country change the numbers are more than convincing over ninety percent of americans want background checks and almost the same number believe those with mental illness should be denied ownership some lawmakers claim the grip the national rifle association has on congress will prevent any changes. but as long as the n.r.a. makes ratings which is important to republicans and their primaries and also makes
11:13 pm
major contributions i don't think we're going to have enough support from members of the opposite side of the aisle. in other words our elected officials believe that their reelection is far more important than public safety lawmakers openly speaking about the power of the national rifle association and the dynamic and influence they have in our elections that's where the conversation in this country should go let's turn to maria teresa lieberman deputy director battle born progress and its institute for progressive nevada also with us tonight is chris brown of the brady campaign to end gun violence great to have both of you with us tonight from los vegas. maria the republican leadership said today that this is not a good time for the gun debate i want your response to that. my response is that it it's never too early to have this debate what happened in my hometown in
11:14 pm
las vegas was absolutely frightening and her ific in a place that is extremely safe we the entire community lately has been talking about how could this happen here we're one of the safest cities because we have so much tourism and so much international travel and so much manny money passing hands that how could this happen here we do need to do something about this so it isn't too early to have this debate it's also too late to have this debate were having shootings involving more than four people which is the last fight as a mass shooting almost on a daily basis in our country and this isn't normal we need to be having this debate as these things continue occurring chris your reaction to what you just heard the democratic congressman from tennessee steve cohen would you make about. what you know i think it's really important for everyone to understand that right now we have the opportunity to actually transform this debate and enact legislation that
11:15 pm
as you said to start off ninety three percent of the american public believes that we should have expanded background checks in this country instead up until a few days ago what the congress was poised to debate and pass was legislation that would have made it easier to acquire silence or legislation that would have provided easier access to cop killer bullets that's not what we need we are already debating things in this country that take us back it's time now looking at what happened here to move forward and advance the will of the people to both of you the same question there are roughly three hundred fifty million firearms coast to coast in this country if you want to stop shootings like this what are you going to do limit the amount of ownership i mean what law would change what happened in las vegas maria. you know there's never going to be one law that is going to fix
11:16 pm
everything but one thing that we have tried to do here in nevada is last year. voted for question one which was a ballot initiative to expand background checks now with that have fixed this situation probably enough but it would have fixed many other tragedies that could potentially occur here in nevada and it was something that nevadans voted on over fifty percent voted on it and that is not currently being enforced those are background checks i get that in percent of americans want it but what are you going to do chris about the number of guns that are out there right now that might curb something like this i mean is the brady campaign in favor of saying ok you can only have two shotguns and one rifle or whatever. the brady campaign supports measures that actually provide a layer of protection and have some states yes they haven't acted for example california limits on the number of purchases that you can have guns per month we
11:17 pm
think those kinds of sensible layered approach as make sense consistent with the second amendment the average gun owner in america today has eight guns in their home and some have many many more than that ultimately part of what we think we need to do with the brady campaign is to change the perception that the n.r.a. and the gun industry has profited by that people have in america that a gun in your home makes you're safer forty seven percent of americans a decade ago thought that now sixty three percent believe that we need to really inform the public of the dangers of guns in the home and we have a campaign to do that chris brown maria teresa lieberman great to have both of you with us tonight thanks so much for a few key themes stand out listening to the stories of survivors from las vegas the scene was surreal it was almost like a war zone for the survivors there is joy and relief getting out with their lives
11:18 pm
with the real pain remains what did those who died do to deserve this whoever whoever shooting they are loaded. put a new clip in new magazine and start shooting again so we get down that that happens probably four times before we even get out of the complex and there's so many people around here that are i mean they were all dropping. so they were hurt or they were injured or they were dead and we just kept running my boss he got hit in the back as he was fleeing with me he was behind me and then my friend got here he was in front of me so i was kind of in between don't make those shots don't stop you don't hear that it's like being in a word zone and you can just hear the rounds almost like creeping up on you. like they're just it's like hunt you down i just kept thinking late we just need to get a good. story.
11:19 pm
in just. to run over. to it. i. tell you the stories are just emotionally gut wrenching there's no question about it and for more on how the recovery is taking place for these folks in las vegas we turn to amy tarkanian amy thank you for being here tonight you know you i know that you have volunteered to help the last two nights what is your life been like since this horrific ordeal. i'm not going to lie it's been awful every word gone whether it's the grocery store the bank i took one of my children
11:20 pm
to a doctor's appointment this morning everyone looks at each other differently they all hug each other tight strangers are looking at each other differently asking did you know anyone who was there. we're glad that you're safe if that it's a totally different field people people are really. sad and they're in shock i think our community is definitely in shock is this the door to door neighborhood conversation that's going on that there is just now all of a sudden an unbelievable bond amongst the residents of las vegas. yes absolutely and i'm so proud to be a part of this community if you go to any of the areas that are actually. where you can donate blood they have tents set up where they've got flocks of water they've got food they've got people there that are ready to give you a neck a massage or a to give you a hug ready to pray for you give you free counseling if they're around the clock at
11:21 pm
the convention center from what i was told last pastor friend of mine was there this morning and said that it's wall to wall jam packed with food there so much food that they're now asking that the food be donated to food banks. it's been a tremendous outpouring of love and camaraderie and unification here definitely in las vegas amy do you get a sense that the people of los vegas the residents there are getting faith connected this is such a measure of viewing for so many americans when they go through a tragic event do you do you sense that. yes last night there were about a half dozen vigils alone set up i know again tonight they're going to continue. there are news stories after news stories being done on how to cope how to reach out to counselors how to reach out to faith based organizations to seek this help
11:22 pm
that so many people need people are traumatized there is a school teacher of one of my my children who couldn't even go to school yesterday and she's she said she's going to try to return tomorrow but she says she can't stop crying she was there she survived and she just she can't sleep she can't stop crying and you hear that over and over and over of the people who survived they just they can't get the pictures out of their mind they can't function amy tarkanian you stay strong thank you for being with us tonight appreciate it thank you. and other news tonight president visitor puerto rico today for the first time since hurricane maria ravaged the island the president handed out much needed supplies to citizens and during a speech the president praised the recovery efforts and promised more relief for more on this we go live tonight to our deep or spotted breed a fortnight in miami marino. president trump in the first lady met with hurricane

11:24 pm
and what is your what is your death count as of this moment seven sixteen sixteen people certified sixteen people versus in the thousands. now less than one hour ago the governor of puerto rico said the official death count for hurricane maria has climbed to thirty four however in published interviews puerto rico's public safety secretary of knowledge the death toll may be far higher officials say the dead can't be documented because logistics and legal aspects of declaring someone dead are not available death certificates are not being processed as quickly as they normally would now in total first responders and local authorities reach all seventy eight minutes apologies on the island and coordinate communication efforts we will not know the official death toll now that is a sad reality as most of the people of puerto rico remain mired in chaos ed thank you marina in other news tonight the russian allegations continue to dog the white house one law. maker is trying to broker
