a gunman who show little to no signs of wanting to harm anyone leaving many to wonder how could this have possibly taken quaids joining me now is dr monica williams director of the center for mental health parity and brain sciences at the university of louisville kentucky and columnist at psychology today thank you so much for joining us dr williams why are these most of these mass shootings that we think carried out here in the u.s. carried out by white men well that's a really good question and i think the answer comes back to our culture i mean our society actually creates them white men are taught through everything that they see and experience in our culture that they're uniquely privileged special and entitle and they deserve all the great things like halfs has to offer so you know we basically inst still narcissism in our white men which clinically is only a stone's throw away from psychopathy and so sometimes when people with this mindset don't feel they have gotten all they deserve in life they blame everyone

else and in extreme cases this can be a mass shooting especially if someone is already mentally imbalanced dr williams you mentioned an issue here and us culture us society how can not be worth right well i think a lot of it has to do with reversing the the expectation of white privilege which is kind of a taboo topic we don't like to talk about but the fact is white privilege is the is the necessary corollary to racism and oppression you can't have one group that's oppressed without having another group that's unfairly privileged so we have to be willing to have these discussions to figure out how we can create a more fair and balanced society for now i want to talk about the gunman he has had no history or run ins with the law so how can someone that appears to have shown no red flags do something so extreme. right well i mean usually when you look at these cases there are warning signs and you know we don't we haven't really seen

a lot of warning signs in this case and we've seen a few small things that indicate that you know maybe he will route sometimes but sometimes you can't you can't always predict situations like this and sometimes they're they're just random now that being said i do think that this situation could have been predicted because actually there was one really big clue he had a room full of deadly high capacity guns and he bought those guns legally and i mean anyone who buys thirty three guns in one year i mean that right there tell the truth there's a warning and if anyone had been keeping track of it they might have looked into him they might have seen he had a psychiatrist they might have contacted his psychiatrist and said hey is it a good idea for this guy to have forty seven firearms a guy with a compulsive gambling problem and clinical anxiety should he have forty seven guns i mean if the police knew he was having those guns and that he had these mental

problems maybe you would have kept an eye on him through saying dr williams this could have been prevented if someone were monitoring him all right now and the gunman the actions they show a lot of rage and they can you explain to us what does this tell you about his mindset right well sometimes when people don't feel they're getting everything that they deserve when they think that they have a right to be happy and they're not especially if they have this narcissistic mindset. looks like we lost dr williams there hopefully we'll have her in the next hour on that with dr monica williams now to washington d.c. where the senate intelligence committee held its first news that briefing and months yesterday the committee has been focused on a russian meddling in possible collusion with the truck campaign and for more on this we now go to ad schulte host of the news with ed schulte senators burr in warner delivered a bipartisan assessment in agreement with the i.c.c.
