this is trying to solve it one tiny house at a time the tiny house idea is very simple it's shelter. food water and shelter are not optional they're required for human survival so it's a. temporary solution and like the first stone and foundation if you will to helping people who are homeless. according to elvis these cheap and portable tiny homes are meant to be on the streets of l.a. . and do need to fix. but right now they're not moving anywhere because city already he's banned them so they used to belong to somebody. being used no now they've been sitting here for a better part of a year collecting dust. people are struggling and suffering. so yeah it's really sad i mean it's you know this is human life here. los angeles authorities
6:30 am
have accused his tiny homes of threatening public safety but elvis has seen the tiny house movement go viral online with support coming from right across the world so with the help of internet crowdfunding he's going rogue once completed they all have a new carbon pad they'll be alarms on the windows i put the vents these holes in the top you know it's really hot this summer here so that way the heat will rise and go out in the city of angels elvis isn't considered one by the powers that be. but to the homeless he's one of the few struggling to get them off the streets i don't quit and i don't give up and i definitely don't bow down to bullies people need shelter now if i have to build a tiny house for every last person to live five hundred years old then that's what i'm going to do.
6:31 am
elvis is building his next house for a woman called raven. so there's a few people that live. ravens living under this top hole and next to a freeway. it's unhygienic and far from safe. the situation much worse than when elvis last saw. even his check of this rare yeoman service. i. could see. ravens being on and off the streets most of her life for walks in the area yeah sure after fleeing violent home when she was just thirteen years old. she once had a time but since the city forced most of the street she's been out here so you do not. tired after getting that house i happen to be pretty well you
6:32 am
know a pretty good life but there are times when they. when they do it. like during the. good. elvis is worried by the state of this communal camp and he leaves to buy raven a tent until he can build her a new tiny house so i'm going to have a tent and around the back you guys in a little while. alone . up about a situation. it's been a struggle. and. the city always kicks us out from your state. to create those.
6:33 am
who wants to costly move their stuff every day. to the. ravens out here because she feels emergency shelters are overbooked or unsafe but city law was designed to move these camps on. and as a phone queue she receives a visit. he said we've got to. get a move on by saturday. elvis. raven given orders. she's running out of places to go they want everybody downtown they were ready one section. not going to happen yet or branch out. is going to get away from downtown they want everybody downtown but six downtown
6:34 am
skid row. the worst place in history to be homeless downtown. if you're homeless and l.a. city laws to keep streets clear give you two choices. keep moving. to grow. this is the only place that you can sit up a tent without the city forcing belief. but elvis is tiny homes aren't allowed here . skid row is. unlike anything else in the united states. i call it the worst manmade disaster in the us why. are you. doing ok. and he fails runs a big the agency shelter. in the middle of skid row which i'd like to he's seen the
6:35 am
numbers of women seeking help in a trip in just a year but you me get daedra nice to meet you unless you've got pretty eyes. and he's on crutches because last year he lost a leg to the flesh eating bacteria that exists here still every day he's out inviting new arrivals to his shelter because he knows just how bad it gets more than two thousand people on the streets forty nine square blocks of skid row it's the worst that we've ever seen are just a good idea you really need to look down that street there's not one open spot of cement sidewalk. for half a mile down that way. elvis is tiny houses designed as an option to avoid sleeping on skid row. because he is the increasing numbers of women and children a sleeping alongside drugs crime and the mentally ill. and police are the only
6:36 am
source of protection starts a pretty constant yes day and night. for maintaining order here can be struck running with and. commanders running with us through this fast. spend one night every once in a while and streets and i can't sleep because it's so dangerous and you just stay alert rats are running around running over people running in their trance and often people get beaten or assaulted or raped and that in effect can damage your health pretty quickly.
6:37 am
so i'm all for tiny houses but there has to be restroom facilities and shower facilities because otherwise we're putting people in treacherous living conditions just as if they're living in a tent. and this is why andy's shelter keeps an open door policy but he's struggling to keep up with demand. you see right here right across the city shelters are full up many have to turn people away the simple fact in l.a. is there's just not enough shelter there are not enough beds forty seven thousand people experiencing almost this and there are about twelve thousand shelter beds or transitional housing beds even if people on the streets right now decided to come in there's nowhere to come in there's no place to go. up against with limited access to emergency shelters and low cost housing life on the streets in l.a. is an endless game of cat and mouse. because the city is charged with keeping the
6:38 am
streets clean morning everybody this department of sanitation crew is about to move through the homeless encampments of skid row. watch out watch out for hazardous materials watch out for human waste. industrial operations like this happen daily across los angeles to keep the streets clear the homeless to be constantly on the move. we are here every day in skid row every street is cleaned once every two weeks so the cycle that's the big effort we're doing. but i think it's essential it's essential to the cities . to the cities growth and also the city's image this team will put more than five tons in the gadgets truck today anything they deem to be unsanitary. most of it will be rubbish but some of it will be people's tents
6:39 am
and the few positions by pleading that. have been brought about for something. like. this if you don't this. guy you're in a way. that says he gives advance notice of the clean up but not everyone gets the message today there are so many lucky ones out of. your ass until. they like it because you're feeding i mean if you want a homeless person living on the street you want to live more if we sidewalk decide to devalue a loss leader. but the city's focus on keeping the streets clean means further instability when you're living on them.
6:40 am
it's also one of the main reasons elvis is tiny houses a band playing to hampering operations like this. you know we have the suburban on the street. and if you go inside it's my safe conditions to live it so we basically the city has been a determination that those should not be on the city streets. here's what people have been saying about rejected in the us exactly just pull along awesome the only show i go out of my way to launch you know we live in the really packed a punch. yampa is the john oliver of marty americans do the same we are apparently better than booth. and see people you never heard of love redacted tonight president of the world bank pate. good woman it seriously send us an e-mail.
6:41 am
and it always gives yeah well you know until you go into her show you also the you know mr wolfowitz told you. to go into other things are good and to permit the that the little you have. received your oil for fuel your view of it just to believe all of these blows the glad i wish had gone but not the number that i think you're letting nobody take the money but. i feel this way or my got up out of the wind down because you know i can recall in the state of the impulse you know you know that we're not a stumble we're going to run the truth. using is always. going. to be in a. few will become worthless. a
6:42 am
world without borders no longer seems desirable even europe scales back its welcoming migration policies is there a way of addressing the global migration challenge without being swept underneath. it. later that day right back can't. they made a mess they took out of the great. basically to. find out that getting your
6:43 am
belongings can. devastate. their property destroyed it. and if i ask you. i know that. they came in the midst of. you know. this it killed me the rules they had to be tempted away from the driveway. they didn't ask to be down from sixty nine. and this is rainy. and that is to me too i wish to move most of. christine is new to the streets priced out of the winter she's desperately trying to get back . she says many thankless cycle. that the authorities just take an entire week's work. but there is that i think that being
6:44 am
a i. the city's cleanup means that christine will be out here even longer. before i did before was better. than taking to the to. know is they. are well. for many homeless people in l.a. a lack of affordable housing makes it almost impossible to get off the streets. liston three percent of the city's rental market is fake and.
6:45 am
we walk around most of the night and then christine shows me something breaking. this is the famous blue house. that i called my home. and other memories here in. so that was home this is home for me. this home is four walls. f.l.t. cheering. that i have that again. which is the god's timing that mike. and he says in mind. this is my back. don't be a stranger ok. well
6:46 am
this is tiny high. could help people like christine until they get back on its feet back in compton the pressure is on for them to finish raven's tiny house. but he still needs to locate a place we can put it some way the city clean up one easily find these are just two of over eight thousand lots of the city controls. but. often stuff more love is not allowed. and while searching he gets a call from raven with an unexpected update. for you all right affan your turn around. yeah i'm pregnant. it's more that i'm pregnant hard right now and i've only i'll pray over it our time here and i have my
6:47 am
life together elvis is already worried about reagan but he must to some enthusiasm i will listen i got to run right now but i'll call you back later that's that's great news we have to celebrate. and i want to. i want to jump for joy and like cry of this and on like. this is how quickly a change in circumstance can see your life go from bad to worse when you're on the street. with the stakes raised for the tiny house i want to see how raven's coping with the news of her pregnancy. despite getting orders to move she's still here at the same campsite. you don't want to go.
6:48 am
they're. a little concerned guarding the conditions. living at this time i got a lot of business to take care of. don't know if i'm never enough time to. that's what makes me. like. like getting off the streets. but getting off the streets is difficult for raven. we talk more and she reveals the devastating level of violence she fled as a kid. on the streets. i was listed as that they were not runaway.
6:49 am
my dad. my dad been in prison or. mama's. side let's pray that would mean. that in a murder. place. basically we had no choice but to grow up before we were time. raven's had to learn to be tough. but she's right on the edge. like more and more americans take care. she strips deep in the cycle of long term homelessness. with no immediate way of getting out. so when your life is the size of a teen can be a powerful tool. it's almost delivery day and with the news that raven's pregnant
6:50 am
elvis is adding a special finishing touch to her tiny house. so i'm ok with. her feel better and you know help her feel like she's got a look at elvis knows how important little details like this can be he's watched too many people lose hope on the streets. houses away from people three people have died mainly due to being stuck out in the not having anywhere to go so it's criminal. picture of smoke in the doorway of her her tiny house one of the people who died was his close friend smokey who received the very first tiny house new year's morning they found her dead in somebody else's tent not even her own because the city took that too. so. it's pretty simple without shelter people die. so. it's been
6:51 am
a few months but she was a good person and she was my friend. inside city hall the pressure is on to create more housing. the city has approved a multi-billion dollar strategy to help the homeless but it will take ten years to build ten thousand new units which is. officials refuse to embrace elvis is tiny for me a tiny house on a. parking space is not a solution. we're doing that this service to those individuals who stayed in these tiny homes without the out of. infrastructure in place city council. opposed to tiny houses in his district because of concerns from angry residents.
6:52 am
someone wanted turning the site otherwise it'll be a free for all it'll be sex drugs and rock'n'roll and i think they would absolutely have to have some rules and price. see if they are here why put these guys out back with elvis and the city is clear intense yet again this time even in christine's camp right now that load open up there was a pristine show. that's considered a bulky items so it's going in the dumpster. almost christine's belongings are taken by the department of sanitation but residents not around so only christine is here to see it they say you know you're welcome i mean to hit rock bottom this is my run fight every year. all that money.
6:53 am
you can spend half of that and get these people a place to go but instead they're treated. with ravens camp demolished most of her positions gone and with a baby on the way elvis must deliver her tiny house before nightfall. with. i finally found a suitable location for ravens' tiny house in a quiet area mostly industrial. affect anybody. elvis and raven hope this part of downtown l.a. away from skid row will be safe from the authorities. with already he's must continue to keep l.a. streets clean days finally. for the tiny delivery feeling
6:54 am
very good by very. good to drop a lot of. good through a lot of hardship and so this tiny house it's. after the week that she's had and everything she's gone through on top of being fragmented it's more important now that she gets the house because i don't think she can go much longer with not getting any rest. you really feel if. i do. think. i think. i'm going to think. most things i do in life are out of principle. i was taught that when somebody falls down you pick them back up. that's what we should do in life. to remember that you know you got things. you called me and said. you know people
6:55 am
sit on the back porch. look at the stars that was looking up a tarp you know you have to see your city not look at the tar but look at the stars it's got a magic. so finally raven gets her own private space. and hopefully the first time in over a year you could not sleep and you think it's really just. that was said to say with us forever i wish it could last forever. abramovic god's hands. the a book.
6:56 am
funny you know more of the. underworld. total. war not me didn't you know. all your money go to post gets a good move for your. i mean always gives yeah you know until you go into her shows are those are the you
6:57 am
know mr wolf that is still. telling the other things are true that into turn it be that then it will go. to your or your will your view of it just you believe also or just blows the glad i wish i got the time to remember that the ones who nobody can take a look at. feel to it or mock you got up out of the line down because you know often enough when the state of pm pulls you know you know that he's not important or stumble into the room the truth. to you that he's always been this you. know who he is. you become worthless. what we want is to put an end to nuclear testing and then to move towards
6:58 am
a world free of nuclear weapons and to do that we have to bring countries who seek or who out of this ambition to understand that their national security doesn't depend on the possession of nuclear weapons. thanks guys or financial survival guys. when customers go by to reduce the price. in elf well reduce of flour. that's undercutting not what's good for food market it's not good for the global economy. we all willingly accepted the risk of being shot wounded taken prisoner but noone signed up to be friggin poisoned by our own people i've seen stuff that was nuclear biological and chemical products the said do not truck tires all types of styrofoam polystyrene batteries trucks there was
6:59 am
a complete denial i think at all levels of government that there was any connection between berm pits and what these brave soldiers were suffering from to compensate every soldier marine airman and sailor that was on the ground that are complaining about illnesses from their exposure from the berm pits would really literally send a v.a. broke and they don't want to pay it so the waiting decades a lot of those soldiers will die in time and they will have to pay and. call for help and get the middle finger the movie is the model is. delayed and i hope he does.
