1:07 pm
sebastian kurtz making him the e.u. youngest leader just thirty one years of age where for the latest on the polls in vienna we got. all this poll as we've just been saying we're not too far away from the final results coming in what's the picture there. well this certainly does seem to have been a victory for both conservative and right wing populist parties as you say exit polls are almost final as predicted we have in first place. who is the current foreign minister his party the people's party with thirty one point seven percent now he has said to quote i am overwhelmed we have made the impossible possible the second position is currently where the battleground is happening and it's between the social democrats who are currently standing with twenty seven percent and then just one percent behind them twenty five point nine percent and you have the right
1:08 pm
wing freedom party now the leader of the social democrats the current chancellor has stated again i'm quoting that we need the next five years to straighten confidence in the social democrats as you can well imagine this is a huge victory for the right wing freedom party until you have the leaders saying that this is a great success this shows a desire for change now the voter turnout was particularly high as it stood at thirty seven to nine percent which is focused and higher than the last election for her back in two thousand and two the question of course now the maiden said self to who will form the coalition government with the new chancellor who will be europe's youngest fifty one year old. and here you have the bad blood between the social democrats and the people's party which is why many analysts particularly those that i've been talking to say that it's an alliance that's likely to happen between the
1:09 pm
peace. party and the freedom party this will be a crushing blow to the european union because you will have a white alliance that will be in government it is also a strong vote against the liberal politics and this certainly is a trend that we have been witnessing it costs you it not only here in austria. the ethos was. revealed if you believe that you are. the r.k. no book of workers are. going to get married living here and. now sebastian kurtz's people's party has campaigned on
1:10 pm
a platform that is tough on immigration it's also made some of its policies more white in an effort to appeal to voters from the freedom party so much so that the freedom party has accused it of stealing some of its policies. like other nobody is coming into the country without registration without a passport or to you no one should be allowed to enter austria i just will do everything possible to stop illegal immigration so i am asking that social benefits for non austrians be significantly reduced i just will do everything we can to end the abuse of our social welfare system by immigrants. now what these results certainly show is the continued potency of the refugee crisis when it comes to european politics some part of the reason at least here in austria why there has been the swing to the right is because of fear of immigration because of high unemployment and because of a lack of the. kind of economic growth very nice right up to date from vienna paula
1:11 pm
slayer thank you. and the media has dubbed the austrian election campaign by the way one of the dirtiest it's seen acting chancellor christian kern accused of using facebook to discredit the opposition leader sebastian kurtz calling him a xenophobe the pages were allegedly set up by a former advisor to the chancellor with current himself denying any involvement and promising to investigate the scandal ok let's cross live now for more on today's developments go to hines gardner hines is a professor of political science from the university of vienna and we're very happy to have you on the program as so there we go the exit polls ninety percent of the votes counted we're waiting on the final results it looks as if sebastian kurtz will be chancellor considering his inexperience in politics and his age how is
1:12 pm
he going to fare on the world stage do you think. i do think he performed pretty well as a former new style or do you so he do very very. sort of just want to remind you again did she see period that you know nuclear agreement has been negotiated so last year was the host of it then almost it was one of the initiatives sort of nuclear treaty which has been adopted in new york just recently and also was to head to chairman strippers to always root. for and really see. i would not be. ok the current ruling party though they haven't had a great day by all accounts the social democrats there are no in second place according to the latest polls perhaps even could into third place. the freedom
1:13 pm
party why are they losing support in your country. or social democrats have had bad luck because with this kind with this affair of the. social democrats it did time it was a social democrats and so substance was not their main issue or the issues came up only in the last phase of the campaign and i promise to date as a sort of democrat so unfortunately for the social democrats just kind of dominated the debate and to get them each to two to cut trying i don't know how to exclude that that would be a government between the people's pockets as well as with a much older than a continuation of the grand coalition which had to be fought just. exchange of bodies so i do not think that knowledge chancellor can
1:14 pm
remain in coalition the people's party so there's a lot of negotiating to do in the in the next few days i imagine and just talking about the success story i suppose of all the other parties are votes for the conservative people's party on the euro skeptic freedom party are they largely dying to failed migration policies do you think. both parties have seen you make. so i would even say that quits was even harsher than the freedom party in each year so if we will have a coalition between the people's party and the freedom became expect that. laws so that might be a change but i have to say so because you said to us skeptics the freedom party is stay only that i'd be party to. colorful. to leave the european
1:15 pm
union so so maybe we'll have to presidency almost every night of the presidency next year and so the freedom party to not be isolated ok thank you very much for your note element of this our thank you heinz gardner professor of political science from the university of vienna beautiful back drop to you as well there thank you. all right so the world festival of youth and students is currently underway here in russia we go live to the city of sochi for the latest on this. what we want is to put an end to nuclear testing and then to move towards
1:16 pm
a world free of nuclear weapons and to do that we have to bring countries who seek or who out of this ambition to understand that their national security doesn't depend on the full session of nuclear weapons. manufacture consent to public wealth. when the ruling class is protect themselves. when the final merry go round. we can all middle of the room sit. in the real news room. here back with our team. international the world festival of youth students is
1:17 pm
opening in russia's black sea resort of sochi the week long cultural event is expected to attract off words of twenty thousand visitors from all across the world here's some highlights from the opening ceremony well come to the nineteenth the world festival of youth and students in sochi. as you can see behind me the opening ceremonies of the festival have already begun the aims of the song and dance performances that we've seen in technology human progress and development many people here all of them very excited quite a moment here so we'll be giving you updates on june and stay in touch and i will be letting you know what develops here on the next five days of the world festival
1:18 pm
of the students here in sochi well indeed let's not wait any longer let's go straight to sort you were joined by our correspondent daniel hawkins there outside the i still in sort she's a limp park at lots of exciting young people there are spectacular scenes as well what's happening there right now. well it's been a day of excitement we've had many concerts on this square here behind me as well of course as the grand opening ceremony which report from culminating in a pretty amazing forward display with fountains going off in the square here as well and managed to finally get out of that quite loud and noisy excited crowd to join us here on the square as well tell us a bit more about what was going on inside of me before this is your first time in russia but not your first time at a youth festival how is it compared so far wow i mean what a ceremony i mean that was something special now i attended the two thousand and thirteen festival in quito ecuador totally different experience nothing like this i
1:19 pm
was not prepared for what i saw in that auditorium that was that was a tremendous performance i mean music dance and the audience i mean the audience was just on the edge of their seat i saw people bursting into tears at the neutral of a numerous times people were just very emotionally moved by the ceremony it was quite powerful and to see so many young people just a sea of young people in there or their yellow jackets there the uniform for the festival all kind of moving as one body there listening to the performances seeing it was something special you had to have been there t.v. doesn't do it justice twenty thousand people from a hundred fifty different countries certainly set so i believe a bit of a record for sudden for the spectrum of arrivals coming over to speak to some of those people earlier to get some of their emotions and thoughts on their experience so far let's take a listen. came from the middle east from sri lanka we have to imagine the meaning a lot of countries is here more than one hundred fifty countries a lot of cultures
1:20 pm
a lot of people excited to meet the new people. youngsters a great opportunity to come and meet as one to get to know you all around the world there's like a sense of that the possibility of food right at world a world with more social justice is seen possible and here we can see that we can meet people. every country that can prove their experience is what they are doing in that country and that's what we came to do and it's really great. of course as well as a chance to ball them to network to meet new people it's also a chance for young people of all over the world to discuss and debate global ideas that caleb yes i mean a real emphasis on technology and scientific research that seemed to be a major theme in the presentations in the videos that were shown in the song and dance performances there seem to be this emphasis on the idea that if we can develop and if we can raise the standard of living around the world and get people out of poverty and out of the conditions that drive them toward drugs and terrorism
1:21 pm
we can raise the standard of living around the world we can have a more peaceful and interconnected world where people are trading with each other doing business getting along and just kind of building a better life for humanity a very clear message but it's one that you just couldn't disagree with you watch that you thought how could anyone possibly disagree this is this is what brings us all together this is the basic human emotions right the desire for a better life for the next generation young people being full of hope having dreams and aspirations it was a very very human presentational a lot of power a lot of power in that room and that was of course a key tenant of lot of the putin speech as well he made the hard anticipated speech on the screen use actually enough to see it live and let's just take a listen briefly to what the russian president had to say. seventy years ago the first festival was held back then young men and women were brought together by the belief that sincerity and kindness could break the ice of mistrust they believed it
1:22 pm
would help to release the world from injustice from wars and conflicts they prove that barry is a powerless in the face of real friendship. and of course it was a special year for this particular festival as a lot of us are a year is that it's been hell twice in russia before this is the third time it's been held i mean just a little bit about the historical by. it is still relevant today this festival these festivals have been going since one nine hundred forty seven and nine hundred forty seven was two years after the usa and russia and china all came together to defeat fascism in this beautiful moment where they they valued human freedom and dignity and and defeated the forces of fascism and after the second world war you know the usa and some of the some of the big money interests there were trying to divide the world and there was there was this division of the world in any country that was aligning with russia or china was basically being barricaded and the idea of the festivals was to bring the young people of the world together so we don't need a cold war we don't need hostility we can have connections and and share and our experiences and the youth of the world the world democratic youth aeration can come
1:23 pm
together and express these kind of anti fascist values that came out of that glorious moment the second world war and really this festival is just a continuation of that tradition if you look at it the theme is the same is that the world should be united young people from all over the world they shouldn't be hating each other because you're from this country and you're from that country your country has this ideology my country is that ideology instead we should be united in trying to build a better world in which we're sharing and cooperating with each other in trying to raise the global standard of living and that theme stays true the cold war may be gone the soviet union may be gone but that overall theme of peace through cooperation and development that seems to be very well alive and we saw it on the stage and that powerful powerful performance and we heard it from the lips of russia's president vladimir putin absolutely certainly something we've seen here today with those people from every country every confidence almost from. the experience over the next few days as well thanks so much for coming away from the states actually to be with us but i'm sure it's
1:24 pm
