their way into manhattan are just packed full of people you know standing standing room only people you know people just possibly in there with barely enough space so if there were to be an explosion in in this area that potential for injury is quite massive as the area tends to be quite packed with commuters on mornings like this now the port authority building that's where the boxes that are coming into the city tend to deposit that's also you know at the site of the train station this is just a block away from times square and this is forty second street this is midtown manhattan as is quite a busy area and that is a very large security and police presence in that area at all times we've seen that there have been previous incidences there you know most recently there was that there was the incident where there was the individual who was driving through times square and trying to injure people with his car there were fatalities and that is

very heavily monitored and police huge amount of surveillance a huge police presence and as we understand now the leader of sort of police departments on the scene clearing the area trying to clear any any any people from the area just trying to evacuate the scene for safety purposes as we now are in an incident like this you never know if this is our or not you know so far we know there could be more explosions in the works so you can be sure that they're trying to evacuate the scene to get everyone out of the problem before they are determined so they're able to determine what happening that the building the safety of the thing is safe and if things can return to normal you know questions are still being raised as to what this explosion was whether to take place this kind of big building let's with this explosion on was this explosion in the subway or was it was it in the area where the prices were coming in was it on the on the street level of the building was it higher up on the on the higher math. where you know

. just had been planning this for a number of we did this in the name of isis. joining me live now to discuss the ongoing situation in new york is jim john triss former u.s. diplomat well hi there jim i mean what do you think could have caused this i mean what given what we know so far. well of course so much is speculative at this point we don't even know for a fact that it was a bomb but that's certainly the first thing that goes through every body's mind remember we did have a bomb some months ago that injured a number of people this does not seem to have been a massive blast there's no reported casualties except possibly one in the injured

person from the blast itself or maybe that was caused by the panic or a stampede that was reported afterwards so there's still a lot of question marks here if it was a bomb who was behind it did it go off prematurely reportedly the one person in custody has had a second bomb on his person this is somebody reported to be in his twenty's who may or may not have anything to do with it so obviously there are a lot of unknowns at this point. looking at the timing of all this as we were chatting about earlier it's been an hour now rhonda now since the initial reports i mean why do you think that the police giving away too many details at this point well i think it's prudent for the police not to do that now sometimes you do have the problem as we've seen primarily in europe and some extent here in the united states when there is a terrorist attack it is specifically a jihad attack they want to downplay that they want to explain it away as something else if that is the case and they know that they're holding it back that's not good but i think at this point they're probably just being prudent that they don't have

all the facts so we don't really know much about it why they one of the interesting things we'll find out is if they do have this person in custody and this person was connected to what happened is this somebody that was known to the authorities who's been under surveillance and so forth and somehow they weren't able to stop them here that has been the case with so many previous terrorist attacks where we find out afterward yes and this person was known to the authorities well and what good did that knowledge do. what we saw in a second you'll no longer mean could it be that it's being targeted ahead of the festive season say. it very well could be enough course we've seen again primarily in europe with the stepped up security around christmas markets and things of the sort that they they have more in europe than they do in the united states what's interesting here is when you compare this to the terrorist attack from the fellow from uzbekistan a few weeks ago who came under the diversity lottery he was using the you if you will to the new method which is to take the weapon at hand which is

a vehicle and run people down which unfortunately is quite effective and something you can't really guard much against because you're not designing a bomb you're not getting getting component parts for a bomb it takes no expertise if this was a terrorist attack of this was a bomb this is the way and in a sense going back to the older script which is to to have a little more coordination and detail knowledge about how to do something like this what i mean we all speculating at this point but it's also i look at the timing here in sort of the wind a foreign policy aspect and the fact that isis has been effectively declared to defeated there are now many pockets of resistance so it looking across the middle east into iraq and syria do you think that this is just a pure coincidence that the timing. well i don't think that i think the timing of first off on the time of day is not a coincidence if it was a terrorist attack doing something like this during morning rush hour where it was designed to have a number of casualties which evidently did not happen there are some reports that

maybe the explosion went off prematurely or only partially so it did not have the impact that perhaps was desired it could have something to do with christmas that could have something to do with the fact that isis is on its last legs territorially of let's remember even when isis was riding high in control big areas of syria in iraq we still had people who were describing themselves as isis soldiers where that isis claimed responsibility for afterward so it could be connected to that but as you say kate there's a lot of speculation going on and also i mean is this a case of this is something that then is to be expected in a way of is it a case of now that i mean as i said lots of speculation here but it's more a case of isn't this just a question of fairly looking at incidents that happened for instance in in central london not so long ago in oxford street where there was a fair there had been some sort of all to cation on the metro system there and people running fit with what we ports here in new york a stampede is a case of this is almost like an expectation that something could happen and this

is why we've got this ramped up favor as much as anything else it could happen it might happen therefore everybody's a west on high alert. exactly right and of course the phrase you keep hearing is the new normal that were basically being told by our authorities here in america and also in western europe to expect this that this is the kind of thing that we'll be living with for some time. again if it were turns out that this person in custody is responsible and be interesting to find out who he is he another fellow from someplace else in the world who maybe shouldn't be here in the first place you'll hear people in hungary for example where they're not living in a large number of migrants saying well it ain't the new normal here we don't have this problem now i guess again we'll have to find out who is that is what was written responsible for all that ok to turn out it was something else entirely was it was it was a gas leak or something i don't think that's likely but at this point we are just

speculating and on that note jim just looking so reports coming to the speculation here that it could have been a pipe bomb what do you think about that. well i think the interesting thing about the pipe bomb is remember the incident addicting place a few months ago i'm trying to remember exactly what it was that injured about a dozen people that was reportedly a pipe bomb not anybody least i am capable of making up by bomb just off the top my head you have to get instructions for you have to get the materials for it you have to actually know something that indicates some degree of coordination is not just somebody who pops up one day with a case of sudden jihad syndrome and decides to go do his bit so that that would be a little more indic indicative of some kind of coronation organization behind and also say just looking finally just looking at the location we've got some of the like we had some of the live pictures coming through there as well is it a case of as you said going back to ephesus a total speculation at this point but is it a case of going back then to sort of what's always known as vulnerable hubs this is

getting back to to travel this is going back to a central area as well all we can just see more vigilance from the authorities coming up to the festive season in areas where there are a big think well where you are and that's maybe one of the most dismaying things about this is that even if a lot of people were not killed what is the degree of uncertainty and fear that instills in the population that something that should have been one of the most hardened hardened targets most under most surveillance under most protection still could be hit because after all there's nothing new about targeting something that is a major transportation hub you think if any place should be regarded as somewhat safe and under under under surveillance and with various protective measures i don't know that there's much more they could do it a place like the port authority other to shut the thing down which they can do. so where as a site we're now waiting to see what exactly what what happens now with it looking for all the details to come straight what you think from now on is going to be the response from the authorities. it you know in new york it's hard to say kate
