it reports the hiv epidemic is sweeping across russia poured into health experts more than a million russians are in fact it. almost one in a hundred people in russia are diag no state hiv positive. despite a year of increased efforts to tackle the spread of the virus the country's on course to see annual infections pass one hundred thousand again which accounts for almost two thirds of all infections in europe and central asia. world aids day so quite a few depressing headlines in russian like russia is losing the war on. in most countries around the world the number of new cases of hiv is going down the sad truth is here it's going up i went to see the country's top hiv prevention researcher to find out what was going wrong.
1:31 pm
i'm about to enter a lab where the staff work with samples from people diagnosed with a child and who say there is no defeating the virus without their work. that would not move a muscle for quite a long time in five years not nearly enough attention has been paid to the issue of h r v aids there has not been enough funding the war and h.i.v. requires decisive action without it's this academic told me the virus spreads far beyond the two main so-called risk groups drug users and men who have sex with men . from the. move we've lost time that's for sure while health authorities were losing time people known as aids denial lists wasted
1:32 pm
none online spreading fake h.i.i. the news of the next the on russian social networks in blogs and elsewhere online aides to nihilists are clearly ahead of us and that's really dangerous if you refuse therapy an early death is guaranteed we started looking for denial lists who were willing to share their thoughts with us finding their social network communities which of thousands of members was easy but arranging an interview required over a week finally one woman who used to refuse therapy a choice that almost cost her her life agreed to talk on condition of anonymity. she asked to be called ileana the ex aids denial list struggled to maintain her composure as she recalled how she was diagnosed with hiv. you're going to go to my new. you know. so not those things that only are you

petitioned the show to systematically. because. even as initial treatment had put her health back on track until she met a man who introduced her to the online world of aids denial the dream eventual he convinced her to give up hiv treatment her desire to get rid of the stigma prevailed over common sense. when you write. it's just you know when you can. chop an onion or there's a. good mom and a couple of years later after wild ups and downs and health she did just that with a form of cancer up north but it's to do. number. one hundred yard up on your plate you most of all presidents were in your store. years stop it is a forced him choice. and the focal. point now in prison all.

of whom took on the persona. lock. up was after several rounds of surgery chemotherapy and renewed hiv treatment in a managed to survive unbelievably she was then bullied online by the denial lists for taking medicine again but says she can put all that behind her hoping that in a country with a worsening hiv problem her story could help others avoid fatal mistakes. r.t. . and israeli politicians being filmed hurling abuse at palestinians travelling from gaza to visit relatives held in jails in israel. but don't have. much of an eleven. year old.

or shortly before that video was filmed the m.p. or and has and tweeted a photo of himself with an israeli flag saying he had come to confront the families of what he described as animals he claims he was trying to garner support for a new bill that would prevent palestinian families from visiting prisoners in israel the israeli parliament media service i can tell you this for us declined to comment or in his own mean time is certainly no stranger to publicize the stunts a member of prime minister binyamin could party as and first gain notoriety with the godfather style political ad he also tried to discredit a left wing ngo by creating a false identity in order to provide made up testimony and he wants even threatened to to execute the family of an alleged palestinian kremlin of facebook video for their part the red cross that were scolding the bus from gaza to the israeli prison of rounded on israeli authorities for failing to prevent the incident the charity said it was the juta of officials to ensure family safety during visits. human dignity as a human hearing are going is an action that is extremely important to last so

people being treated this way so one of the buses that were provided to the now to be able to go and visit their families is something that is acceptable because there were elderly they were children and there were lots of women on that class so that is why we are all on these right now the right is still how it was hopeless for sure there. are happen in the future. human rights organizations have expressed their concerns before over the plight of palestinian prisoners held in israel the prisoner support and human rights association says there are currently six thousand one hundred fifty four palestinian detainees among them over five hundred twenty five serving a life sentence for a hundred eleven or under the age of eighteen and international says the policy of holding people who are arrested in palestinian territories in israeli prisons breaches the geneva convention. this is art international good afternoon for me

president donald trump's two thousand and seventeen national security strategy report tells us how he sees the world or rather how the washington foreign policy leads to clearly washington's neo cons are running the show. and country of china's ias demanded an apology from the united arab emirates it's off emirates airlines banned female choose ians from boarding flights to the u.a.e. last friday citing a possible terrorist threat at the time the move caused widespread. no i just him she believed my would i go to a country that wonder exactly if that's the case and we should also be opposed visas on the united arab emirates. disapprobation

zahraa force preventing an arab from visiting arab countries is unacceptable when we see the westerners going from country to country freely than most as one of the state must defend the rights of two new zealand women and force the us to apologize . well but passenger ban was lifted the same day the gulf states foreign minister later tweeted that the ban to be necessary for security stressing also though that the u.a.e. respect and values june is in women but i was in the end of it wasn't enough for june is here it's retaliated by banning all emirates flight from landing their ports this tweet was posted by the informant customers the flights have been suspended we talk to each new zealand blogger and activist who said the u.s. initial passenger ban was an insult because of that what happened is file ation of of the nation women the rights but it's a violation of women rights and general the spokesperson for the national

presidency talking about security problems but this doesn't justify what happened if a small female babies were not allowed to go on planes i don't think that. the tunisian government is still asking for official apology and it happened under the pressure of people here in tunisia. it's holiday season of course if you're still enjoying the last bits of christmas so all is gone well each culture puts his own stamp on making at this time your special doesn't it so when next we will talk about the african american community where there's a relatively new festival for them known as kwanzaa although its origins are a bit unusual as colored mopin explains next. the holiday season in the usa is rather intense there's lots of shopping lots of t.v.
1:41 pm
specials now with christmas festivities still underway americans are waking up to find donald trump sending out greetings for yet another holiday today marks the first day of kwanzaa a week long celebration of african-american heritage and culture that's a celebrate the richness of the post and look toward a brighter future never heard of kwanzaa don't worry you're not alone according to a survey taken in the last three years this holiday season is the african-american christmas is actually only celebrated by less than three percent of african-americans do you celebrate kwanzaa no i don't celebrate kwanzaa i don't so it kind of. i try not to get too involved with so much hype of all these different festivities you know anything about the history is it something you identify with i really don't. i haven't really been exposed to much about kwanzaa actually don't think too much about it i grew up celebrating christmas the thing about donald trump sending out a statement for kwanzaa you know today
1:42 pm
a lot of stuff that he does it's pretty hypocritical so nothing he does because it fries me now kwanzaa has been around for quite a long time it's been endorsed by many presidents including george w. bush and barack obama the media covers it quite extensively this time of year kids are static at the start of kwanzaa why is that a holiday that millions of people around the world hold dear a secular celebration to honor african-american and pan african heritage and values all week long holiday that inspires african-americans to take pride in their cultural roots and reinforce principles to live by see it in a number of places whether it's m s n b c whether it's the new york times whether it's the l.a. times there's farming coverage of this event as if it's a real event more coverage i would dare say is given to kwanzaa considering. how few in here and there are then even christmas and hanukkah so what
1:43 pm
is kwanzaa what is it all about well the holiday was started back in one nine hundred sixty six by dr melodic harang he is a black nationalist and he felt like the holiday would strengthen the african-american community and resist the white majority i wanted to give black people a holiday of their own so i came up with kwanzaa and said it was african because you know black people in this country wouldn't celebrate it if they knew it was american now just five years after he came up with kwanzaa kurang actually went to prison for torturing two of his female followers now the media generally chooses to ignore his jail term and his nationalist views when they do coverage of the holiday and they also still invite him on to talk about it however at this point we've learned that not everyone in the african-american community is a big fan of kwanzaa there is no holiday in the on the continent of africa associated with this set of events this is all made up by a person who when the radicals in the one nine hundred sixty s.
1:44 pm
the black panthers were operating thought he was too radical for them and he wasn't able to be a part of what they were doing and he helped put this forward as a way of distinguishing himself and trying to build a greater following african-americans have a diverse and rich history but kwanzaa seems to have very little to do with it many african-americans don't see a need to celebrate what they consider to be an artificial holiday kaleb moppet r.t. new york. whether it's cause or christmas not everyone's getting the chance to get totally stuck into festivities we hear two going to which the french president has surprised his ministers but demanding they stay on standby this festive period and not ventured too far from paris during the holidays it's not going down too well we hear what some of them.
1:46 pm
bunch more serious matters though threw up so far before ago keep in mind that the ongoing situation of that moscow confectionery factory where a direct is killed on site security guard seems a ghost in the on the loose the not quite sure where you can follow the common course of twenty four seventh's place full of news stories for now for me kevin oh and thanks for watching next live update out international for most go in minutes.

los angeles the city of luxury and fame but also an alarming number of people living in the streets. simple fact in l.a. he's there's just not enough shelter even if people on the streets right now decided to come in there's nowhere to come in it's been a struggle. this man phoned his own response to the problem and constructed dozens of tiny homes for people in need of shelter when you have nothing in order to go. you know having something like this may as well be a castle but do the earth already use except such solution. on a parking space is not a solution her someone wanted touring the site otherwise it will be

author of bet the farm how food stop being food fred kaufman joins us from new york fred thank you for being with us the department of agriculture released a recent report which documents that the cost of food for families is about seventy one hundred dollars per year that's only up just a little bit over last year and that has really impacted iowa and south dakota where in the second quarter of the year the g.d.p. the gross domestic product which actually negative but as important there are twenty three other states so you combine that all of all of those that's half the states of the nations are being impacted negatively by these food prices because of the commodities that they grow obviously and many people don't realize how many states of the unions have a role in producing this food that makes us really the most plentiful nation in the world with regard to food at the lowest cost but what does that mean for these rural communities fred. well that's it it's a real hit part because one of the things is that we're looking at that that
1:52 pm
grocery bill and we're looking at bread xin crackers for instance which are coming from the grain from those from those states really when you're buying a ritz cracker most of that cost in the grocery stores for the packaging is for all sorts of other subsidiary costs of the grain itself grain is tanking it a much more drastic way and this is going to spell tree auction really there's got to be some intervention here right and you know it's tanking you're absolutely correct and you know this stuff cold but we did see this huge spike back you know two thousand and ten eleven where all commodities were were on a tear and one of the things you know people don't actually understand that these cost of production are actually tied to the commodity be it corn wheat beings or. live cattle we produce all this food fred but how much of the prices actually get
1:53 pm
back to rural communities at the same time the question just real quick at the same time fred we've got hunger and malnutrition all around the world how do we deal with this problem. we've got eight hundred fifteen million people around the world who are hungry we have all this excess wheat in this country so much access that the price is going down in terms of this spike you have to realize that even during those years one of the reasons for that spike was the unbelievable influx of wall street money which is just been sucked out of the commodity sector because this overheated stock market so this is actually a really old problem this is not something new since the beginning of civilization farmers have come to market all at the same time with an oversupply of their grains and the prices have tanked and there's a really old and simple solution to this from mesopotamia to egypt to ancient china up until the present day this is the moment for government intervention
1:54 pm
either to go in there and set price floors to. buy the grain and put it in a grain reserve and what will happen is you will stabilize that price you will bring it up the food is too important to be messing around and driving farmers out of business now some might ask well what does the government need to do with their grain in fact every country on earth except the united states has a national grain reserve to guarantee food sovereignty why doesn't the united states have this it's absolutely absurd so once we have that grain what can we do with it well there are a number of things we can do with it either put it in that grain reserve or do the traditional thing we've done with foreign relations and use a plow shares in swords diplomacy and start getting that food out to the world where it's needed most which also happens to be places where we need to get some political clout places where terrorism has been breeding in eastern africa and places like that where the united states can really come in and do the savior. fantastica but do you think this is ministrations able to comprehend and get on
1:55 pm
that task fred that foreign policy component of commodities this administration is . particularly unable to understand any of these subtleties they've been events aerating the diplomatic corps they have no sense of the of the pushes and poles of how foreign diplomacy works and they also don't understand foreign trade i mean they're putting up all these tariffs and barriers and what's that what's that doing it's making the e.u. and france in particular putting up their own tariffs and barriers to protect their own farmers so they're not put in the position of well really the farmers let's say in a country like india who are losing so much money that farmer suicides are are very common people are drinking the pesticides which were meant for their crops it's a global shame. fred thank you so much you know i've heard there's vacancies at the state department middle try to smuggle you in fred kaufman author of bet the farm

how food stop being food our gratitude for your time. the u.s. homeless population is on the rise for the first time since the great recession new york city's homeless population rose four percent in two thousand and seventeen and several cities in the west including seattle portland san diego and sacramento all reported surges in people living on the streets r t a correspondent natasha sweet has more on that. it's arguably one of the worst one movie disasters in any first world country even though millions are being spent to combat the issue of homelessness in the u.s. those in the middle that the price is the same the numbers are only well we. we've never seen anything like this driving through the streets of los angeles it's

juggalo it was one of the lucky ones his relapse last seen at the union rescue mission let him to get the help he needed now he's been clean for a year working as an apprentice at the shelter i would hope that we do it just because of our hearts we will not allow somebody to be devastated by homelessness but if it's if it takes a lot then then we need to pass a law bill says with more than one thousand sex offenders on skid row alone you know how women and children sleeping on air mattresses in their chapel only a band-aid for now the bills hopes the country will wake up and fix this it growing epidemic in los angeles and sweets r t. stay right there are plenty more best of buses on the way we'll be right back.
