4:00 pm
well. iran is rocked by mass pro and anti-government rallies with at least twenty one people killed external pressure and fake images of protests online further fueling tensions. also while the u.s. and north korean leaders engage in one upmanship over the power of their nuclear buttons there is new hope for a possible deescalation of the crisis has agreed to talks with the south for the first time in several years. also this hour thousands of migrants are still sleeping rough on the streets of paris that's the spark president promised to find a solution before the end of twenty seventeen but some of the stories coming up later this hour you look at this many people who believe the story
4:01 pm
is this the life you thought you would have moved. by their welcome as well to international live from moscow daniel hawkins wherever you are thanks for joining us this hour this week has seen a series of mass rallies in iran both for and against the country's government it began with protests over the economic situation in the country but later these turned first political and then violent twenty one people have been killed in clashes. or since the protests began washington has been openly supporting the anti-government activists ignoring the mass rallies in support of iran's leadership
4:02 pm
the u.s. also called for an emergency un security council meeting over the situation other members of the body doubted that internal political unrest in iran is a matter of international security. in the past week what has happened on the ground throughout the nation of iran is something the world must take note of. warning given for the last few days in iran may be they do not constitute per se the threat to international peace and security every un member state is sovereign but member states cannot use sovereignty as a shield when they categorically deny their people human rights and fundamental freedoms money will elicit curacy counsel should not discuss things so no issues of any country or its human rights issues if the founding principles of this institution mean anything we will not only hear their cry we will finally answer. we are witnessing an attempt by some delegation us to bring to the attention of the
4:03 pm
security council issues that do not fully correspond with the mission of this body the united states stands unapologetically with those in iran who seek freedom for themselves change in iran will not come from outside it will come from the iranian people themselves nothing will stop americans from standing in solidarity with them no but you don't know someone who works with let iran deal with its own internal problems since this is precisely what is taking place when you are wasting the energy of the security council. has threatened that the european countries will pay for turning their backs on the us. why is it that our top european allies failed to support us on this and in fact france when we brought it up before the emergency meeting of the united nations security council joined with russia and china and said this isn't a fit subject to bring up yeah they'll have to answer for their behavior. ok we're
4:04 pm
joined now by a pool hero he's the matter of the u.s. city of massachusetts state thanks for joining us on the program say good to have you with us today what exactly do you think the cia director meant i mean is this some sort of indication is going to be consequences of some sort for european countries. well historically the united states has tried to stay out of least publicly stay out of any internal oppressed was going on within iran happened in one thousand nine hundred nine to happen again in two thousand and nine but with the change in the administration the administration the current administration trumpet ministration want to take more of a hard line against iran and you know lend it support to the uprising and when you it sort of has a mentality where if you don't agree with us you must be against us and therefore you must be punished and that might not be the most prudent course of action when dealing with some of our allies especially our longest standing allies in europe. i
4:05 pm
mean why do you think europeans countries like france have decided to go along side with russia and china on this matter i mean historically you know there's been a bit of a split in opinions on matters such as syria you know north korea etc but seemingly there is a bit of a different vote in part on this. will on this when we have the joint comprehensive plan of agreement which is the iran deal that could be one of the reasons that they don't want to isolate themselves from iran because that plant in iran plan the iran deal has been shown to be really effective and the you know economic ties iran has with both china and russia are. you know something that they want to try and preserve and siding with the protesters or in this case over the protestors in the united states that could undermine some of that economic cooperation that we've seen a bit of a split at times recently in the u.n. as a body between the u.s. and some other longstanding allies you know the status of jerusalem for example as the capital of israel that's what example previously only iran nuclear deal as well
4:06 pm
. do you think there is a split here between the u.s. you know foreign policy and their allies which you know do you go along with a lot of issues but recently there have been this sort of divide of opinion. absolutely there as a reason the past year of during the trumpet ministration the united states has taken more of a i wouldn't go so far as to call it isolationist approach but certainly a more nationalistic one where you know the sort of concentration of special interests of the united states domany as opposed to be more of a global leader and mr trump as you know president trump has not been shy about his support for some different issues like the status of having the embassy in jerusalem for example these are things that were very controversial and have been long avoided but in for good reasons you know a lot of the other and longstanding allies appreciate the consequences of doing
4:07 pm
some of these things but you know mr trump i want to take things a little differently and it is more of a nationalistic approach. there's been a lot of discussion about a switch from a sort of uni polar world to multi-polar world over the last few years i mean do you think this saw of other countries you know going on a different line to the u.s. on you know global matters at the u.n. etc is that a sign that you know that while this finally taking some sort of full. well yeah if you were to look at the book written by freed zakaria most a decade ago it was called the rise of the rest of the post american world. subtitled the rise of the rest he talked about the way that china or india rise up and create a multipolar world but what's actually happened more recently and i don't think anybody's really really saw this coming was that the withdrawal from of the united states from the global international order has actually kind of exacerbated or sped
4:08 pm
that up and as a consequence of the you know some of these other countries china russia india you know the you know can fill a power vacuum that we are leaving. that's all we've got time for tonight's poll hero matter of juices thanks for joining us here today on the program great to get your take on that thanks everyone. thank you. has more on washington's selective approach when it comes to protests outside of its borders. when they ask for a better economy when they ask for the government to spend money on their own country as opposed to terror exploits overseas or in other countries sure we would certainly do when they say that to you i support mat i'm not going to go i'm not going to see that's why you're trying to trap me into something like that i'm not going to go there to try that is no that is not our that is not our policy but we here with the iranian people are saying poverty corruption and economic uncertainty
4:09 pm
have the potential to trigger protests in the world over. and they can quickly turn ugly. but the international reaction to such unrest seems to depend on the country and question this is the precise picture of a long oppressed people rising up against their dictators it's a little bit when you know i mean in any country people can protest against high prices but when have a such them astray sions happen in our country opponents of the establishment come out and support them and some western leaders are barely able to contain their enthusiasm for regime change and are rushing to throw their weight behind the demonstrators we are now seeing an organic popular uprising organized organized by brave iranian citizens on the largest scale since two thousand and nine the great a rainy and people have been repressed for many years they are hungry for food and for freedom along with human rights the will is being looted time for change it is
4:10 pm
essential that western powers britain britain think. america i mean the west the power is. back in the arena. because it's only with. that being the iranian people secure and can go all the way and securing their freedom of the of the previous regime what we've seen where this apparent pro-democracy fervor can lead. to. the american president says he supports the protesters but these protests are not protests against the government these kinds of demonstrations happen in any country and they are against rising prices but each time these demonstrations happen we see that the authorities opponents use them for their own purposes the majority in iran i believe want evolution not revolution or. the spring
4:11 pm
style which has brought so much suffering elsewhere on the other hand the west seems oddly quiet about the massive rallies that are being held across iran in support of the government. the root of it is just a canard it's the problem of youth unemployment i personally haven't been able to find a job for a long time but if people have a job they don't have any problem with the government of course most of iran's economic problems are domestically generally but another reason why investment and thus new jobs has been slow in coming is that contrary to their obligations under the nuclear agreement western countries notably the united states have not taken sufficient steps to facility normal financial flows when it comes to iran the west says it's listening but clearly selectively as co-opting democracy for its own ends is a difficult habit to break and r.t.
4:12 pm
london. now is the protests in iran began to gain more international attention a number of fake images were circulated widely on social media we can take a look at some now of the following tweet shows one attacking police officers it's captioned iran it turned out to be from a screenshot of on a rainy a movie after being exposed the man who posted it claimed it was supposed to be symbolic this video was going thousands of views and was said to show a march in iran was actually proved to be a protest in bahrain back in twenty eleven other fakes were perhaps less clear one post claimed to show the uprising what in fact it was actually a photo of a pro government running. hopes of a diplomatic resolution to the north korean crisis at our own site after the current country agreed to hold formal joint talks with its neighbors south korea ahead of the winter olympic games it didn't take long no for the u.s.
4:13 pm
president to take credit for the possible crisis deescalation lot of people have said a lot of people of britain without my rhetoric and without my tough stance and such a stance i mean this is this is what has to be done if it has to be done that they wouldn't be talking about olympics that they wouldn't be talking right there and this week it was confirmed that a few days north and south korea will meet for the first official talks in two years the meeting on the ninth of january will discuss the upcoming winter olympics in south korea it's also hoped it will address recent tensions in the region it's going to be held in the so-called peace village in the demilitarized zone on the border between the two countries or another diplomatic breakthrough this week saw north korea reopen a telephone hotline with the south that had been closed since twenty sixteen on thursday the u.s. president finally accepted souls request to perspire on joint military drills during the olympics despite the u.s. taking credit for a potential deescalation of the crisis the dean for the law school tom brooks
4:14 pm
thinks that the white house has actually only made things worse. these moves to have dialogue between north and south korea didn't start a year ago when trump was elected president they've been going on for some time and i think you know the white house has probably something close to nothing to do with this with these steps i think this is something by the efforts of others and not of him i think here to the white house and help this progress happen the white house has really done a lot to endanger it and i think it's a credit to both sides the north and south korea that they've got to stick to open talks to open dialogue and one of only hopes for the sake of the people who live on the korean peninsula that some good comes out of that irrespective of what tweets
4:15 pm
come out of from donald trump but despite the progress being made on the diplomatic front donald trump pozen pulled any punches when it comes to twitter exchanges with the north korean leader this week the insults reached a new level after the u.s. president bragged about the size of his nuclear button it seems that for donald trump size really does matter. look at those hands are they small i. referred to my hands if they're small something else post baseball i guarantee you this no problem. i have the biggest crowds big ears at the biggest standing ovations best the best in the world the greatest health care plan very very successful i would build the greatest world you have ever seen minus i happen to be underrated by the way. overhead bragging about who has the bigger butt who got the big smile you should be
4:16 pm
bragging about the size of your soul i. still got the program israel is offering a stark choice to thousands of african migrants a payment to leave or face jail story and more often this short break.
4:17 pm
what politicians do to. put themselves on the line to get accepted or rejected. so when you want to be president. or somehow want to. have to go right to the press it's like before three of the more people. interested always in the water.
4:18 pm
welcome back to the program now as the first week of twenty comes to an end thousands of migrants are still on the streets of france waiting for power when it's shelter president vowed to clear the streets of rough sleeping longer it's by the end of last year that pledge seems to fall flat. but the first battle is to house everybody in a dignified manner by the end of the year i want no more women and men in the streets when the last. ati's charlotte durbin's can speak to migrants living on the streets still hoping to start a new life in france a new year may have begun but for these my quince the problem is still the same ahead is yet another freezing night on the streets of paris. president said he wanted to resolve the problem by the end of the year it's not
4:19 pm
resolved in the neighborhood there are another thirty camps which are settled like this and these migrants are seeking asylum there is a problem with violence between the people who are waiting in the queue at the reception center because they want to be the first whose fault is that so many but it's not the fault of the migrants it's the fault of the system is poorly organized which is posed problems for two years is completely dysfunctional and creates a situation of confrontation and violence people have been injured at the reception office the people are angry at the situation because it continues in the same way and because there is no solution. one of those waiting to find a way off the streets is rafi he's been in france for seven months you look everybody's lips to him he had a very cordial about nor for no water but there were about you know you know very well in here local one hundred one one another one another this is my life you know look this man i knew in three people sleep with me we hear the stories you hear.
4:20 pm
is this the life you thought you would have to move. across france thousands of migrants a living in similar conditions all hand to mouth some are found shelter in tents along the canals and streets of paris others in the metro stations all a just looking for a place to call home in the last two years more than forty thousand migrants have set up camp at chavez metro station. this is why they come it's a reception center where my kids' school possibly start. every day hundreds side is like this and this is just simply cope with the demands despite a pledge that no migrants would be sleeping rough by the end of two thousand and
4:21 pm
seventeen president has failed to keep his promise and my clients across the country see no end in sight to their suffering. paris. except they pay off or go to prison that's the choice offered by israel to african migrants money to get out of the country the israeli prime minister has labeled them infiltrators and said force will be used if they don't comply. with something here that is completely illegal and completely essential infiltrators have a clear choice cooperate with us and leave voluntarily respectively humanely and legally will have to use other legal tools disposal of the cheese to cooperate with us. all migrants who voluntarily agree to leave by the end of march for being promised three and a half thousand dollars and a plane ticket stay have the option of returning to their home country or going to
4:22 pm
a third one the alternative is incarceration now is where your thirty's say most of the migrants come for economic reasons that despite the fact they claim to have fled persecution and conflict back at home now officials estimate that around sixty thousand migrants have crossed from the border from egypt since two thousand and five a third of those have already been deported of those that remain nearly one and a half thousand are held in detention centers one of the detention centers is whole lot which some refer to as an open air prison. the whole lot i just exist it's not a normal life to live in a lot is not easy ten people sleep in one room you have to queue to take a shower to do anything the doctor is only here from one to three there's only one
4:23 pm
doctor for about twelve hundred people why did i leave eritrea because eritrea is a dictatorial country that i couldn't live there you cannot do anything you work there like a slave for them it's all you can do you can only call it slavery and first i didn't choose to come to israel i didn't think about anything and i just wanted to see where there's peace where i can take care of myself where i can protect myself or soon as the deportation plot appeared the u.n. refugee agency reminded is right about it duty to protect those who need it were invited to get to discuss the controversial issue. and not refugees they're criminals who crossed the border illegally and they've done quite a long way they didn't want to stay in egypt for example for some reason they crossed for via so done via egypt they came to israel they're not refuges not asylum seekers they want to benefit from our reach from our
4:24 pm
merciful society they are looking for rescue in their spirit didn't do anything possible to save their lives some of them of course behaved fine and they've made it here that the government of thieves the world pays each one of them thirty five hundred dollars puts them in the nature of the environment whatever they are from or close to there i think israel must be admired and praised by everybody by doing so how we face the problem so-called problem of some city seven thousand asylum seekers refugees who lift part of them have children here they should stay here they have to stay you know human regime would expand and if israel is going to expel them by force it will be one of the most shane still ever taken note less than this. place and instead

of thanking israel for the years they spent here earned money were treated by the way by israeli medicine which is one of the best in the world instead of faking they what they're going to protest they're going to do it and then they can't come back but by the way of stories wherever they are they're welcome everybody is welcome but you have to keep the law they broke the law provide to time it's also good to stick to fix and the fact is the rate of crime but among those migrants is much lower than the ever interest of crime it is good it's not true gold it's absolutely no need. those. false statement i'm not going to speak as though because this man is interrupting me eighty percent over there we. are recognized as refugees in israel less than one percent how can you. how could you. well so headlines for myself and the team here at
