the in no the syrian border so it might go deeper into the iraq direction i saw one expression of a senior turkish people that will say we'll go until the border of iraq but i don't think this is going to happen. just how strong of the kurds in this region and how much support if at all did they have from america who once called them allies kind of unsure exactly what their relationship is now how much support the u.s. is offering first of all because of the long war in syria the kertesz forces gained a lot of territory in the north of syria mostly north east of syria. because of the collapse of isis they became a major force with the aid with the support military support of the united states turkey sees them as a terror organization so turkey declared an attack on terror that is inflict
7:01 pm
in their eyes that is in fact back by the united states so these clashes can lead to almost clashes. almost physical closures not only diplomatic with the united states a loss been said about the u.s. announcement of this border security force. was this the final story in terms of turkish u.s. kurdish relations here. i don't think so because there was a similar operation. about half a year ago of turkey and turkey always indicated that it will not allow. the kurdish forces to pose a threat to turkey so i think the fact that the united states and now this special force was
7:02 pm
a trigger but it didn't really change the situation the turkey is determined that the kurdish forces all along the northern syria border will not be a threat by the way this is a little bit similar to the situation that israel has when it speaks on an iranian threat form form syria so israel is trying to create its round of security belt and push the iranians back in turkey is trying to create its security belt and book push the kurdish forces away for weeks border i would go so far said there was a kind of cautious optimism that perhaps hostilities were going to fade away in syria now that the turks have launched this offensive how far do you think president added one will go and will we will we see this over fairly quickly or not . first of all i think. he's trying to cash
7:03 pm
in the fact that he was part of the russian iranian turkish correlation during the last year that in fact while the war in syria he wants he's part of this story i think in the back of his mind he also wants to cash the fact that in the last six seven years turkey absolved four million syrian cities is with the alessi of economic and social care for anything so it doesn't have to pay. the price for it any it needs syrian territory or at least quiet border and syrian turkish border so i think he will go on with the question mostly is russia and not the united states i think at this stage is ready to risk a diplomatic of course confrontation with the united states if not even more he
7:04 pm
feels that throughout these week internally and regionally but i don't think he will risk a confrontation with russia and i think they're called the nation between turkey and russia will determine how far this will go. into to hear your views appreciate your time my guest dr allan liril former director general of the israeli ministry of foreign affairs thank you again. thank you very much. ok service evening of breaking news let's head to a story that's come out of afghanistan where several people have been reported killed after a group of up to four gunmen attacked a major hotel in the capital kabul witnesses say that there are up to fifteen fatal it is at this point there is no official information yet though on casualties media reports citing officials who say the gunman started shooting at guests the perpetrators reportedly include suicide bombers and some of them are still believed
7:05 pm
to be inside the hotel security forces are attempting to engage with them as i speak we're also getting reports that there were two explosions in the building part of it being engulfed with fire local journalist blowouts are worried has more . according to an afghan special forces commander from c.r.u. the crisis response unit that's a unit that's trained to fight these sort of attacks there are several attackers there were in the kitchen of the hotel then they moved to room one hundred three in one of four on the fourth floor there's a lot of confusion according to the commander of the afghan special forces who are fighting a very complex attack now this is a hotel. is historically a jewel for afghanistan is all it was built in the more peaceful times it said sana held tarp it's very difficult to secure almost not impossible and this is also a hotel that got attacked in two thousand and eleven and we only heard in the last
7:06 pm
forty eight hours or so from the u.s. embassy in kabul putting a security alert saying a number of hotels in government buildings in other locations were at risk of an attack obviously this sort of an attack shows the constant security an intelligence failure but it also shows how the afghan government and its international allies are finding themselves fight another fight on a very difficult front line which is the city's air at this moment i really don't know more than what i have told you there's a lot of confusion but this is also a hotel which houses a lot of people and i think that will be a nightmare for afghan special forces because their priority will be to protect lives. british student has been making headlines after she appeared on a radio show and confessed her support for communism and the four year old told
7:07 pm
a b.b.c. programme she felt communism was never given a chance to develop in the soviet union and therefore didn't actually fail the story of a strong debate over how universities alluring students to the left one professor who add their views repeatedly said that the guest the downplayed the crimes of starling we spoke to ourselves about this media storm. i think it's completely hypocritical and very typical of academics like him to kind of passionately you know talk about the deaths under the save even but i think this is you know very much selective outrage the media in general obviously don't paint marxism or socialism or really any kind of left wing politics in there in a positive light and that's because obviously in you know the media is owned by a certain group of people in the media is owned by
7:08 pm
a billionaire class they have certain interests they want to protect i think people can think for themselves and i wouldn't take their headlines general opinion of the british population. perhaps not surprising the story was seized on it seems red alerts have been flashing in the british media often of late much was made of the prime minister or in a bracelet featuring frida kahlo a communist no her concerns about the poor or a buzz feed science editor felt compelled to lock down her social media account over abuse that she received for writing she wanted communism for christmas but does the public share the read fear of the media according to a recent opinion poll nine percent of young adults view communism as a danger to the world compare that to global business which nearly a quarter think actually poses the biggest threat. to us george barda shared his views. what one needs to remember is that anybody of my age and older in this country and certainly in the us and across much of the west identifies communism in

the soviet union and the like hard left or extreme left as pretty much different aspects of the same thing in the one nine hundred fifty s. when when the soviet union was showing very significant great significant rates of economic growth the mainstream foreign policy journals were very much kind of writing these defensive narratives to trying to explain away why the demonized system was apparently doing so well i think one needs to distinguish between the propaganda and the historical realities. in france right police have moved in on europe's largest prison firing tear gas not that inmates but actually had guards and rest there fled while the prison staff were taking part in a week long nationwide strike over what they say are dangerous working conditions including escalating attacks on guards elsewhere in the country the justice

prison guards and also the creation of a special high security wing for radicalized prisoners. some for more determine if we are really determined to make ourselves heard and to ensure that our demands are met and we really want work conditions to be changed especially in terms of security. north and south korea will perform as one team at the upcoming winter olympics that's just been confirmed by the president of the international olympic committee the olympic winter games in two thousand and eighteen hopefully opening the door to a brighter future on the korean peninsula and in writing the world to choice in in a celebration of hope. the north and the south will march together at the opening ceremony under the name career and they'll use the unification flag athletes from the two countries will also compete as a single team in the women's ice hockey and the korean folk song around will be

a bit more skeptical. it's an entirely transparent and legitimate public service tool aimed at protecting citizens from unfounded news there is not even the slightest intention to enter the political debate you cannot create a brew or people checking news because everything that we are talking about it's an opinion at the end you can check the region of the news you will never read aerial independent or to see what is truth and what is fake so i i think we should try to fix the all media system it took to have an independent media system and then we can talk about thinking is there not. a us disability rights foundation has hit out of film directors for failing to cast people with disabilities to betray the disabled the group's president says it's offensive and humiliate actors with disabilities

a great example of someone who has participated in comedy about. her disability because she thinks that it's important to make sure that people of disability are not treated as a separate class but are treated like everyone else so that is i think at the core of what we're discussing here today ok busy news hour that brings you right up to date with the new latest news headlines for you in just over two minutes. but it's rather sad to hear some of. the from what i saw. i know that i know right now that there are rather you know what are the four or six years that.

people have been reported dead after a group of gunmen and suicide bombers attacked a major hotel in the afghan capital one perpetrator has been neutralized by security forces three remain at large. so he starts a full scale military operation against kurdish positions in syria's afrin region launching airstrikes and cross border shelling with a ground invasion expected to begin on sunday. and his second year in office the government is shut down over a funding bill we take a look back at isn't the president from ten year so far. thanks
7:21 pm
for joining us this evening you're watching r.t. international. ok let's start by heading to afghanistan where a group of up to four armed men is attacked a major hotel in the capital kabul the perpetrators reportedly include suicide bombers are still believed to be inside with reports of heavy gunfire occurring local journalist joins me now live with details from. this point what what information have you managed to gather. speaking to afghan special forces sources inside the hotel there saying that the forest and second
7:22 pm
floor have been cleared third floor is where they are facing some sort of for assistance there's definitely fire. adding on the fourth floor and according to one afghan special forces fighter at least six rooms have been either burned down or some sort of fire extended to those areas there are also some numbers of casualties and fatalities at least two people or seen being taken away. ok i do apologize correspondent in afghanistan below so we've lost the connection clearly so let's move on now because we have another breaking news story that we've been covering for the last four hours since turkey began a military operation on syria's kurdish region free launched air strikes ordered shelling as well with a ground invasion expected sunday well most of the planes have conducted sorties
7:23 pm
all of those aircraft are now said to be back and base in turkey campaign which ankara has deemed anti terror has been named operation olive branch they say that it's. kurdish militia for free which has been held by them for five years the cross border shelling of the area started friday artie's with following developments. at least eight if sixteen's has been firing from the skies while on the ground you have the turkish backed syrian opposition rebels have moved into this enclave isn't on tape that is controlled by the kurdish militia the white p.g.d. from the ground we're also hearing that the free syrian army has been arriving in buses as well as in trucks that have been fitted out with machine guns we are receiving reports in terms of the civilian situation there and maybe you hearing there people have had to retreat into their homes and into shelters but there are reports coming through of people who have been wounded and injured and who are being taken to the local hospital now all of this follows threats over the last few
7:24 pm
days take the president the one that he was going to launch a ground offensive into africa it was really just a question of when and he said that this was really the only answer to root out what he has called terrorist elements there take a listen through it but as soon as he asked for an operation has a factory been started on the ground this will be followed by man bitch i don't see the promises of not so nobody has a right to say anything. now man big is an area that is mostly arab it is waste of the euphrates and it is the next step in terms of the turkish military's way of dealing with the kurdish militia it is not far from the area that the army has entered now so that is where all eyes are turning for the immediate future the turkish foreign minister has posted a tweet which says that the country launched this offensive against syrian kurdish militias he says exercising the country's right to self-defense he added the
7:25 pm
actions are strictly in keeping with international law he went on to stress that the operation isn't dogs and civilians but aims only to take out terrorist groups. r.t. correspondent has done of joins me in the studio. so many different countries military groups of infighting in syria over the last few years i mean a very messy i would say situation and it's very hard to kind of visualize where everybody is can you help was clarify the picture well yes sure when it comes to this operation it is taking place in the north of syria so if we could just put the map here showing breaking down the situation in that region i'll be i'll be able to quickly show you how this situation has been unfolding and how it has been so the whole operation is taking place in the african region and you can see just here so this is the african region and it's highlighted yellow as all of the kurdish controlled territories so how lighted in green other turkey backed rebels they are
7:26 pm
helping out from the ground and syria of course is the syrian government controlled forces and they don't have a problem with the kurds by the but they do have a problem with turkey backed rebels because it's not only the free syrian army there but also some territory there is under the control of the four of the group formally known as no structure and man because here is what could be the invention or game plan of turkey because erdogan has already threatened that he may go and try to take that city as we can see a lot easier to see when you've got of the kind of split the kurdish forces but more significantly there are you know sovereign syrian territory indeed how do we get to this point well at this conflict has hardly been really that it has hardly been a coming out of the blue and so what we have here what we have here is. this what this operation hardly came out of the blue the kurds have historically been a major thorn in turkey is side but what catalyzed things now was the pentagon saying the are going to create
7:27 pm
a so-called syrian border force. the coalition is working jointly with the syrian democratic forces to establish and train the new syrian border security force currently there are approximately two hundred thirty individuals training in the b s f inaugural class with the goal of a final for size of approximately thirty thousand one very precise description of america's intentions there by that point turkey and had enough ankara beefed up its forces on the syrian border and deployed tanks and president erdogan valen to carry out quote infanticide and what he called this he calls this terrorist force your secretary of state rex tillerson try to do some damage control but that wasn't enough to contain his fury and has been keeping the united states in the loop about their operation against washington supposed america's called on turkey and the kurds to focus on the fight with ice or pretty much the same as saying it's every
7:28 pm
man for himself in this conflict turkey has also notified syria about the action an ultimatum which is not making damascus happy at all russia in its turn has been cautious and called for all parties to restrain from confrontation the main reason behind the developing crisis in this part of syria is the provocative steps taken by the united states which were aimed at isolating areas with predominantly kurdish populations uncontrolled deliveries by the pentagon more than weapons to pro american formations in northern syria contributed to the rapid escalation of tension in the region and led to special operation by turkish troops. so loose lips sink ships they say well this time we're looking at a potential all out war. many thanks. ok let's move on to another breaking news story this hour is coming out of afghanistan we mentioned it a little bit earlier a group of up to four armed man has attacked
7:29 pm
a major hotel in the capital kabul the perpetrators who reportedly include suicide bombers are believed to be still inside the building the been reports of heavy gunfire we got cut off from local journalists are aware of it i think we can go back to him now he's in kabul. just take us through first of all what you know at this point in terms of the major facts and figures. according to several sources within the afghan special forces the forest and second floor has been cleared some rooms on the third floor either burned down and some of them of cart fire and there's definitely some sort of sporadic gun fire on the third floor and there's definitely a gun battle on the fourth floor according to multiple sources within the crisis response unit team one fighter told me that he saw two people who were carried away from the third floor he couldn't really tell me whether they were injured or they
7:30 pm
were killed this is still an ongoing situation almost forty five minutes ago two loud explosions were heard afghanistan's best and most elite forces the members of the crisis response unit team are afghanistan's best hope to fight this sort of an attack they have experience they have been fighting these attacks for years they have been trained by westron special forces but we still don't know who is really inside the hotel how many casualties and fatalities we're talking about in a war and family members already taking to social media into local media simply wanting to know what exactly is happening to their loved ones i think it's also a failure on the part of the afghan government that this still have not been able to stablish some sort of a helpline despite years of these attacks.
