but the republicans would do the same thing they're holding out hope that donald trump will be impeached when they take over the house so what why why would they why would they want to go cut a deal now with the guy way i mean it just when i know i know what i know what the answer should be because it's the right of the country for beyond that unfortunate really i think we've reached a time in a place where we're beyond that i'm pollyannish on it and so you think it's not going anywhere by august i think that we're going to have a bill out of the senate and the house but it's not going to be reconciled and they're going to talk about getting it done in september that may be a pipe dream but i hope that's a case conservative t.v. and radio host steve malzberg i think he should be in my pleasure shit. time now for a quick break but stick around because when we return we get the latest on what is being called a day zero in south africa as they head towards a time when they will actually run out of water plus i sat down with an utterly inspiring business entrepreneur involved with social change also
5:01 pm

back cape town the south african coastal city with a population of roughly four million people is on the verge of running out of water and people are talking about an apocalyptic apocalyptic sounding the day zero for like the zombies right it's april twelfth is the day and unless it rains a lot it will be gone all the water the local reservoir is nearly bone dry and there are already traffic jams and long lines to fill water containers but voluntary rationing hasn't worked as officials had hoped the cape town mayor's office released a statement which read we can no longer ask people to stop wasting water we must
5:04 pm
force them so today residents are limited to fifty liters of water just a little more than thirteen gallons each day residents are requested to take showers of no more than ninety seconds and some have resorted to recycling bath water to flush toilets last year's south african drought along with climate change generally and the growing population in capetown are said to be the causes of the crisis meanwhile the hope is for a long period of rain at this point but in the next two weeks the weather says there is a zero percent chance of precipitation on all but two of those days and even on those two days there's only a twenty percent chance of rain forecast it will keep an eye on in our hearts hoping for an end to the dire circumstances which are impacting residents and businesses alike. and we stick with south africa for today and on one more inspiring story one that you may be more inspired than ever before i know i was in
5:05 pm
davos last week i sat down with tracey chambers who had an interesting idea about her professional business career and how to take what she'd done in the retail sector and turn it into something that was good she's taking wasted retail stuff clothes shoes etc and it's a wonder and it work and through her passion her program tracy chambers is helping build business women in south africa i ask her to first explain how that all got started. you know my pasta finding that was i work for one of south africa's best retailers it's called wallace but it's not the same as the american will this is the equivalent of marks and spencers in south africa i was head of finance and i knew that we had a problem with waste it's part of the retail model is into impossible to get supply and demand matched there's always going to be customer turns there's always going to be indices and merchandise and the retailers really struggling with that as
5:06 pm
a business problem and what do they do with it they were trying to donate to charity but you can imagine it's at the store level so they would allow a store to select a charity the store selects an orphanage and you know every quarter they call it off an engine say would you like to come and get some boxes of of stuff and it would go back and they would it would be christmas and they would go through the boxes. and maybe ladies' dresses and high heel shoes and bra's and if they were very very lucky so really they really weren't able to match the needs and so that the my business background and on the other hand i've taken a sabbatical just really looking to find my purpose in life. and in that moment i had a woman work for me a name is her name is beauty she raised my children she's now seventy two she's still in our lives and you know every year every quarter i used to or every twice a year i used to clean our own wardrobe and i don't with fancy clothes and i had
5:07 pm
given to say to bt would you like these and monday morning we used to celebrate how much money she'd made and i really threw her in her and she was very entrepreneurial single mother of five children i knew that there was money to be made in the informal sector i knew there were hundreds and hundreds and hundreds of thousands of single mothers so the statistics and so that freke are frightening sixty eight percent of all children all mothers with children under the age of two or single. and the only safety net they have is about thirty dollars a month per child and you can't even buy milk and bread for that the other problem is that many many south africans haven't finished school our education system is really failing. previous generations and this generation listen fifty percent of children finish school and in order to pack shelves of the retailer that i worked at you needed a grade twelve certificate so you're education and your inability or you the lack
5:08 pm
that you didn't have in your life to finish school actually became a life sentence and the other thing is that south africans given our history when particular entrepreneurial particular black south africans they were particularly blue collar workers a lot of families had been torn apart through migration and culturally we really needed to try and in cultivate a culture of i call it self employment you know we're almost one step back from entrepreneurship where you're not necessarily inventing the business you're executing a business and really trying to get that inculpated show women that they can create their own wealth that they don't have to rely on somebody else to create their wells and secondly try and get that message to the next generation because i think if you had a great role model in your life the chances are that you going to aspire to being self-employed and entrepreneurial is much higher so we really put the two together . my business understanding my networks within the retail sector my understanding
5:09 pm
of my limited understanding at the time of the need in the demand for single mothers and my co-founder and i really had a cup of coffee we call it divine intervention the idea wasn't really there before we had the cup of coffee we threw it all in the mix we also threw in our selfish needs i wanted to teach and mentor but that all in the mix gave us and really in two thousand the end of two thousand and nine artpop the idea of the clothing bank and we've been running ever since and the dog. it's just keep printing in terms of the work that we do so none of this would have happened had you given your access professional close to your child care provider she saw him on the weekend comes back on monday a giggle about how great it is that she made this money but that was sort of the genesis of this whole idea and then you got the concept at this divine coffee right yeah absolutely it's a great overall success story but since you have been mentoring people individually tell me of some specific stories or one or two if you care about you don't have to
5:10 pm
use names if you don't want but let our viewers have a little bit more texture to what it means yeah so the typical mother that we work with is single. she might have might not of us finish school but if she has finished school the quality of his schooling is very basic math she can hardly work out a percentage that kind of thing but the main thing is that she's she comes to us with with an icon mentality she's had so many failures she said so many traumas she's often been poorly parenthood and you know in the beginning we thought it was in the really easy fantastic product because we really do get fantastic but this is the second one clothing this is almost brand new clothing some business skills everybody is going to be successful and in our early years we had a lot of failure. i can think of one particular woman she was in a jet six she was bright she really wanted this but she kept coming back to that
5:11 pm
self-doubt and i think the psyche the human psyche their minds it's that we have the poverty mindsets they're very powerful and even when opportunity presents itself we if you've been stuck in that mindset you can't reach for the opportunity it's like your feet are stuck in cement so we had to learn so much about what it really takes to move people and sort of two years in we started to become more psychologists than the business special. and now we really look for women who are have high self motivation but they also have a thing that we call internal locus of control and that means that they have a fundamental and mental belief that they're in control of their own life that life is a series of choices from every choice i make i get a consequence from every one of those if i learn and seek. understanding my life i will make different choices and if you find people like that you can work with them so we've had many many success stories i've actually bought your pack of success stories but the one that i sort of like to talk about is a is
5:12 pm
a mother she has seven children when you oscars she had a great great interview when you ask her why did you have seven children she said well every child was a stepping stone to a roof over my head. and those seven children of from fathers so as she was out of a home found a new boyfriend had his child thinking that that would mean that she would stay but of course it just doesn't it's almost the opposite so interest came to us she had her children were hungry. she was really relying on her community to help her she tells us about the headmaster who help to feed a child children clothe their children but she's a very very driven person and she has really grabbed this opportunity with both hands she's now not just trading in the product that we we saw she's trained she has she has found the spirit of the trader in the but the most beautiful thing is that she has two oldest children she has now signed up for college and she is
5:13 pm
so proud that she has paid those fees you know relying on anyone else on a government subsidy she paid them and the the satisfaction that you get from that is incredible the other second thing with her is that she's gone back to that school and she said if any child in the school live needs clothing i can give you that because you help me she make sure that every child in a. each as a birthday is celebrated and i think it's that kind of individual that really want to cultivate you know you might need help at a time but it's it's what how do you possibly on how do you pay it forward. and it's that really spirit that we're back to cultivate and it makes me think you won this prestigious award last year the western cape premier entrepreneur recognition award and i wonder if you have any advice that might be helpful for others were inspired by your story tracy but maybe they're going to do something in
5:14 pm
a different light what's your advice to them either non-governmental organization or others who want to do some good like you've done yes and i think the what i've what we've certainly learned in our work. is that charity she is probably the worst thing you can do you nobody wants charity nobody feels good when they get charity we could be giving these clothes away what we do is we sell them to the woman so that they're learning real business principles but also it's like if a sense of i didn't get a handout i actually can do this and that is it's catalytic in someone's life so i would say to any other nonprofits out there if you're giving charity you're actually trapping people in a state of dependency you destroying this self-esteem secondly i would say that if you're going to work you know with the with the type of woman that we work with there's no light touch approach you know average age of a woman is thirty five she's had thirty five years of trauma you're not going to
5:15 pm
undo that in a in a morning's life skills course or you're also not going to be able to teach business in the classroom so figure out a way a way and understand that this is a long term ginnie you're not always going to find the right person at the right time in their lives people are people and not everyone is going to be successful sometimes they circle back when they're ready and and that's not a failure but make sure that you have to have a holistic program. you know we sort of i look at it since two thousand and ten we came in there with two pieces of the puzzle one fabulous product second i was a business woman times did business that was two pieces of the puzzle we now probably have twelve pieces of the puzzle so as we learned my goodness we didn't understand that we need to put that in place and we really really hold and nurture in an environment bring she just she finds herself again and that's really important if you're going to work with people it's they're not machines and human beings that complex and you need to get them given the environment and the
5:16 pm
ecosystem which in which they are going to flourish he said earlier in the interview that you were trying to find your place in life and wanted to do something else and certainly this must be one thing it's incredibly inspirational highly admirable more power to you thank you for the good work you're doing not only in south africa but the inspiration you're providing around the world tracy chambers c.e.o. and co-founder of the clothing bank in south africa thank you so much for being with us thank you thank you greg thanks very much. we have a few more of those interviews from davos which are also inspiring we'll bring to due to those in the coming days and before we go thursday night football is changing networks for the next five seasons and will be seen on fox networks pay roughly thirty five to fifty million dollars per game for broadcast rights although the new fox deal with the national football league values each game at more than sixty million dollars and as it relates to a program noting
5:17 pm
a programming note here tomorrow's program we're going to talk about the business and economics behind the n.f.l. coming up on super bowl weekend with the patriots and the eagles and we're not just going to talk about the crazy commercials we'll do a little bit of that but we've got lots about what do they do for example with all those jerseys that say they won the super bowl and then that team didn't anyway i hope you'll check it out that's it. now if you hope to catch boom bust that boom bust on you to youtube dot com slash boom bust r.t. catch you later. this is says harlan kentucky. over all of this move them places you can go to st families are you.
5:18 pm
a co money city with almost no coal mines left. the jobs are gone all the coal miners have said. that it was a laugh to see these people the survivors of disappearing before their eyes. i remember thinking when i was younger that if anything ever happened to the coal mines here that it would become a ghost town but i never thought in a million years i would see that and it's happening it's happened. they are imposing their sanctions we just started developing our domestic capabilities and topping our internal resources because remember how during the previous u.s. administration they said that the russian economy will be in shambles but pointing to falling oil prices and sanctions and all that stuff if you will are we in shambles now quite the opposite.
5:19 pm
across europe municipalities are taking their water supply back from private companies who give it to me to peep out of the holes with simple song alone even if i company guess what else with they invite private companies to take over the utilities many by the telescope of. the actual miss you guys who got booked but you buy them to come out because. this is a map of us to quote them out put it up. for you. locals are ready to stand up for the basic human right of access to water it's about water but it's also much more than law it's about the hurt and the redistribution of. it downwards if you want to.
5:20 pm
extortion theft and drug peddling we report on the huge police corruption scandal unfolding in the u.s. city of baltimore where no lead unit tasked with taking guns off the streets went rogue. also ahead the world down the doping agency saying it's seriously concerned with a decision by sports top court to overturn the olympic posed on twenty eight russian
5:21 pm
athletes also ahead. five migrants are shot dozens more injured in a mosque brawl at a food bank in the french port city of cal a number of residents we've heard from tell us they are living in fear. because i think we need a structure put in place to protect us there's a lot of delinquency here it's a catastrophe for the french and it's. actually for the people in cali the violence is really damaging. just on a minute past eight o'clock here in the russian capital this friday february second i'm you know me and welcome to our to international first this hour some news coming into us donald trump has approved the release of a classified memo alleging the f.b.i.
5:22 pm
abused its surveillance powers during trump's presidential campaign in twenty six however the document is too big directed buck to congress where they'll decide when exactly to publish it now if released it could discredit the f.b.i. the department of justice kalam open picks up the story the pending release of a classified government memo is shaking up washington d.c. if indeed the obama administration used the department of justice and the f.b.i. to spy on trump during the campaign this could be quite a scandal it would discredit the d.o.j. of the f.b.i. as nonpartizan a law enforcers and destroy the democrats now the democratic leadership doesn't want to be destroyed so here's a few of their last ditch efforts to keep their boat afloat. now adam schiff from the democratic side of the house intelligence committee says that he's preparing
5:23 pm
a counter memo he says the republicans edited the document to fit their political agenda he says he's preparing a memo of his own that will expose the misleading character of the document. that the f.b.i. says that they haven't been given sufficient time to review the document and they have grave concerns about the facts that have been removed from the memo as expressed during our initial review we have agreed can. it's about material emissions a fact that fundamentally impact the memo's accuracy. but. democrats say the document was altered before the president saw it they say that these changes were made without their knowledge so the vote to release it is invalid. discovered late tonight the chairman knew news made material changes to the memo he sent to the white house changes not approved by the committee the white house therefore reviewing a document the committee has not approved for release however some of these changes
5:24 pm
came at the request of the democrats and the f.b.i. themselves others included minor edits and grammatical fixes. but. now leaving house democrat nancy pelosi says that releasing the document poses a significant threat to national security intelligence is that it's the cia that d.n.a. at the end i. national defense everybody has their element of it and sources and methods must be protected. but. if you absolutely cannot stand the message go after the messenger and it never hurts to throw russia into the mix is it possible that the republican chair of the house intel committee has been compromised by the russians as a possible nuclear threat are russian agents running the house intel committee on the republican side i hope that's not the case i mean this is behavior speak of that i mean i'm not the first person who's raised this he's behaving like someone
5:25 pm
who's been compromised now keep in mind this whole big stir is over just for pieces of paper but those four pieces of paper contain vital information information with potentially enough voltage to light up washington d.c. for months if not years. r.t. new york we took the chance to speak to the executive director at the eurasia center think tank in washington d.c. who believes the. memo's release could cost over the russia related investigations you know he's frustrated with russia gate. investigation of which after a year and a half we have no evidence whatsoever and now what we've got is actually evident texas could have backlash on the democrats absolutely i think that's the primary that's the fundamental reason why they do not want to release it really puts in the question this entire investigation it shows at least indications that could be further investigated but from the initial appearance severe bias
5:26 pm
with senior levels of our law enforcement agency i think what he's concerned about here i personally don't think anything in the memos probably is that embarrassing yes is that against threaten national security i don't think so so the classification is probably more because it's sensitive information and the president has the authority to release that. yet we'll be keeping a close eye on that story in the coming hours but let's stay right now in the u.s. where a major police corruption scandal is on full ding in baltimore with astonishing claims of wrongdoing continuing to emerge six former police officers responsible for reducing gun crime have already pleaded guilty to running a criminal rockets four of them are now testifying against two other ex colleagues who denied involvement. they came at me like a gang or something i remember one of the officers saying i looked like someone who
5:27 pm
needed to be robbed everybody's life is destroyed because of this my kids are afraid to go in the house the gun trace task force was made up of plain clothes officers and was supposed to be tackling the city spiraling murder rate it was however dissolved in march last year the officers arrested the units the tech to face the slew of charges including not they stole from the extorted residents as well as committed fraud and falsified evidence in criminal cases. or smear accounting reports from baltimore on how the units crimes were actually exposed. well it all started with an investigation into drug trafficking in new jersey then as the case unraveled federal authorities found out that the baltimore police department was also involved mostly its elite gun traced task force unit months of recordings recovered from a device planted in a police cruiser reveal that officers were involved in drug trafficking robbery
5:28 pm
falsifying reports and planting fake evidence in one case a high speed car chase resulted in a crash which the officers tried to cover up one of the indicted acts detectives involved actually broke down in tears in court it was a really bad accident none of us stopped to render aid to see if anyone was hurt we were foolish although i was doing so much wrong it got to a certain point where too much was too much altogether six officers have already pleaded guilty and two are still being tried but there are indications there's more to the story than just one rogue police unit court records show that the city paid over half a million dollars to settle claims of misconduct and falsifying reports involving the very same officers and dating back as far as twenty fourteen so why did they all forty's choose to sweep it all under the rug kind of you see this those offices of very well known industries for door what are they doing and this isn't the first incident where it came up it's been it's probably been plenty of complaints you
5:29 pm
can't go an extra help because you're afraid it. might just do some so you might pencil it's common when we see them coming we go to opposite direction if we can and if we can we deal with this circumstance this has been corruption for a long time you know just because this is one as in a way as though they decide to you know come forward or you know they got caught for what they've done is stops that particular but at the same time as not going to stop the corruption has to be done to stop the corruption from these criminals are cops and the cops are criminals then there's the unsolved murder of detective shawn souter that took place in. november last year souter wasn't part of the country's taskforce but worked with some of the officers were now under indictment and the day before he was set to testify in the corruption probe he was shot in the head with his own weapon while on duty and another unfortunate twist which some might find suspicious a patrol car transporting the dying officer to an os but all got into an accident
5:30 pm
there's no suspect in the murder so far and no eyewitnesses except one unnamed partner and when the police commissioner tried to redirect the investigation to the f.b.i. the agency refused saying that the case had nothing to do with the corruption probe i'm growing increasingly uncomfortable that my home aside the texas did not know all of the facts known to the f.b.i. or the u.s. attorney's office that good if revealed to us assist in furthering this murder investigation in the wake of the scandal baltimore police have launched an overhaul including a new commissioner vowing to rein in city violence but investigators still seem to have a very complicated plot to unravel samir khan r.t. reporting from baltimore. the world doping agency sees its concern by the decision of sports top court to overturn the lifetime a limping bones given to dozens of russian utley.
