nationally she won by three million popular votes she would have won by over seven million plus six in the battleground states let's just take the three you mentioned pennsylvania michigan and wisconsin on october twenty eighth she is ahead by substantial margins in those three states according to all the polls no. nothing out of what i just said all of them and then within three days in the afternoon of october twenty eighth comes to call me letter an avalanche of headlines across the country hillary clinton under new criminal investigation on e-mails all the networks all the cables twenty four seven all the media three days later her lead has collapsed in those three states and south carol in north carolina florida and arizona the entire electorate started to shift away from hillary clinton some of them stayed home many of them went over to donald trump and that is

a simple fact of mathematics and it wasn't until two days before the election on november sixth that james komi said in effect a two sentence letter which he put out on sunday morning two days before the election. sorry we looked nothing there six days they were able to look at all of the six hundred thousand e-mails and found the hillary clinton ones where she was mentioned nothing there that changed the decision and not to get it was too late by then all of her lead has cleared it was too late by then all of her lead has collapsed and she lost the election and remember that on october twenty eighth in the morning she was winning by a greater margin then at that time. and the election then barack obama defeated mitt romney so people who say she ran a bad campaign she made a lot of mistakes they were responsible for defeat too but the one decisive thing that we know statistically is that she would have won had james komi not intervened

improperly and written a letter to congress which he didn't have to write all he had to do is go look at those e-mails and earlier three weeks before he could have done that and didn't and he cost her the presidency and gave the country donald trump done a good bit of research well done let me but the question is not did my question is why so that's a mystery other than i never impugn motives because i'm not a psychiatrist i know that the character and conduct of james komi over the years is consistent with the pattern of extreme norse's cystic belief that everything he does is right and he does not have to follow the rules that everybody else does for example there has been a rule for over half a century democratic and republican attorneys general don't do anything at the

justice department within sixty days of a presidential election nothing wait till after the election don't do anything that might impact the presidential choices of americans he ignored you know about this he said well i had to ignore it because i wanted to keep my commitment to congress well excuse me mr komi. you're not entitle to ignore rule you are appointed and you report to the attorney general and the president you don't get to not follow the rules he should have been fired by barack obama that's the only thing i agree with donald trump on but donald trump fired him as part of what appears to be an obstruction of justice motive as he told n.b.c. i fired him because of the russian investigation he should have been fired because he violated a fundamental principle that the justice department does nothing that might impact a presidential election couldn't hold the attorney general have done something well he did actually write an op ed and said that james comey was wrong and made

a poor judgment but it was really learn how to lynch and sally yates who could have done something and but for their decision to not order him not to send his letter and they could have on october twenty seventh as i reported in my book they made a decision not to order him because they were worried about his grandstanding if they did and they thought hillary will win anyway what a sad understandable but said choice that gave us donald trump when they didn't order him not to send the letter you suggested that there was such over confidence that deep thought you could win anyway right so somebody very close to the dago she ations on the day he was considering writing that letter. has told me and i've reported on many sides of this including senior people in the intelligence community that james komi wanted to protect his political rights in the congress and decided to send that letter even though the letter said we don't know

anything we don't have any facts he specifically said that in his letter he wrote it anyway because he said there is no way that donald trump can get elected now he testified in may of two thousand and seventeen that he was not thinking that that letter might have affected the election a lot of people think that that he used the expression pissed off donald trump one of the reasons trump fired but we do know that komi had a choice of not sending that letter going over to look at the e-mails before he sent a letter and he would have found in six days because that's how long it took them there was nothing there he could have done it in early october this country would have hillary clinton as president had he done that rather than being gamed by think rudy giuliani and other people who went on the air and predicted something was coming three days before the letter had rudy giuliani you know when he went on fox and said ha ha something is coming we now know that a cell of f.b.i. agents in new york information to information to change his mind the notion that

donald trump in the right wing are now trying to sell that the f.b.i. is a left wing pro hillary clinton conspiracy are you kidding me so it's unfortunate that komi just didn't see the possibility that what he was doing would elect this reckless and dangerous man in my opinion who's president have you spoken to hillary about your book yes and. and and for before the inauguration of mr trump and talked about burying myself in my grief after the election and literally buried myself in data all the polls below the surface of. i told her i didn't just do you versus trump i did feelings towards you versus mr trump i did everything i could and the only thing i came up with was that you would be president had there been no komi letter and i want to know whether you

think i should write that book and she said you would write that book a lot easier than i could because i'll be blamed for blaming it on comi and we both agreed that lots of mistakes were made in the campaign no campaign doesn't make mistakes that might have caused her to lose but the last one on october twenty eighth in the morning she was going to be president and then called me write this letter and she encouraged me and has supported me and came to my book party in washington and did a very nice tweet about the book yesterday but today. is a popular think figure among democrats clothes near an adult kind of a democratic year old. you're great over the years digging right into the core ironies of life oh six the irony is right in the middle of writing my book in which i factually legally in all of the ways prove that james komi cost hillary clinton the election that he was too worried about politics rather than the rules and then

just at the point that i'm ready to finish up the book donald trump fires him and he becomes a hero i had to decide should i continue this book and then i realized it was still a fact that james komi has to live with he won't accept that he made the wrong judgment but he can't deny my statistics that's why i think he said he would be nauseated if he thought he changed the election while he was in it and now he is being made to a hero because trump and all the right wing are trying to suggest that he was pro hillary clinton that he should have prosecutor or recommended a prosecution all these silly things when you think about the f.b.i. for if i said judges the entire justice department are all part of a left wing conspiracy are you kidding me right now komi is liked by democrats simply because trump fired them and the f.b.i. and called me are being attacked as a good. well i was going says a good journalist you know the journalist you're a partisan but your hell of

a writer did you call me for a quote. i did i called everyone and i got everyone to sit down with me there not on the record and by the way i was editor in chief of the el daily news in my old the sunset is a great journalist and on c.b.s. and as the final four as you know so i'm a frustrated journalist and i did interview everybody many senior people in the intel it was not justice department and i called comi and i sent somebody very very close to him to ask please sit down with me and give me your explanation as to why you did what you did and he respects him for this he just declined once to tell his own version of the story in an in a book that i think he's working on and i resent that is you know i mean i don't i'm so i'm told i did speak to so many people close to him and there were many many articles written in the new yorker the washington post new york times that had quote friends of jim comi explaining that he made his decision sincerely believing
