consumer products to avoid advertising on one of the most prominent platforms today but what about the central actor in the whole story facebook platform has shown commitment to the battle against fake news and abuse but the floodgates have now been truly opened on the pressure left right and center to moderate to send such a sanitized and seems to have buckled under the squeeze well it has made itself very vulnerable because it has made these promises and it's even done some things to try to filter misinformation out of its social network even though they have tried to do things it doesn't appear to be working we're going to see a lot of pressure increasing pressure on facebook at unilever thinks it could fix it by giving putting marketplace pressure on facebook i'm a little bit skeptical that that will actually work facebook is tackling an ever growing list of coles and ultimatums first from politicians and security services now it seems corporations that shipping into facebook spending to dumond's could

well backfire. what could be so offensive about a kid's movie about rabbits to justify calls for a boycott. i just need to keep the wildlife out where they belong or to try to. go for. the animated film peter rabbit or the ology foundation of america because of the way of progress food allergies there's a scene in the movie where rabbits a very human arch nemesis is by throwing a lot for a use of him he's allergic and starts choking having to inject himself to stave off the reaction of the sea call some courage to call for a boycott of the movie claiming it makes light of a serious issue and paves the way for bullying sony pictures house already issued
5:32 pm
an apology. ok let's go at live knowing get some debating done because we've got live on the program tanya winters president and c.e.o. of allergy and network and also joan griffin a republican party official from texas you're both very welcome to the program thanks for holding on in this extended news hour as well to both of you told me it can we just start with you here the movie actually shows a person dealing with a food allergy is that not enough it's being brought to the forefront is getting offended on this a little too much. well we believe that food allergies are a very serious condition again two people die daily from life threatening allergies and there are approximately two children in every classroom with this condition so making fun of it taunting bullying and any fashion due to a disability or medical condition like anaphylaxis is simply unacceptable joe
5:33 pm
there have been issues when there were bullies attack children for food allergies calling them week one british child even died. thirteen year old dairy intolerance and was forced fed cheese on diet i suppose an understanding of this is a good thing is that it's. well look i don't think anyone has a problem with being sensitive to those who have the ability and conditions but i had asthma growing up and it was certainly debilitating and i think that the reason we should oppose this film is not this scene involving our g.'s percent a but rather the fact that we are changing a beloved child story that authored by beatrix part potter and changing the moral of the story the moral of the story was don't disobey your parents don't sneak into the garden or you'll die not that you'll get hit by blackberries if you're if you're in the garden so i think changing the story this hollywood license is the
5:34 pm
problem not necessarily the allergies themselves yeah just picking up in john's point there is this not a step too far are we finding something in today's culture really just to be offended by to try and get a twitter storm going trying get a few likes there and facebook sony has apologized is that not the end of the matter some would say so we shouldn't have done. you go ahead sorry. sure so we believe and we appreciate sunny's apology we think it's an important first step but again i also agree that it's important to have these issues raised in maybes like this maybe and to recognize life threatening allergies certainly this helps to raise awareness however making fun of one because of that disability or because of that condition or you know taunting or even putting them in that life threatening situation and making fun of
5:35 pm
it is really we believe irresponsible i suppose joan there would be some would say . there's hard to find a better way to a cartoon a movie that will be seen by so many children and their parents to educate. but food allergies it's maybe a good thing. well well look i grew up with looney tunes who doesn't remember of the number of things that looney tunes made light of including speech impediments and these are things that today would send parents an activist group screaming from the room demanding sensitivity and look i have again as i said i had asthma growing up there's nothing there's nothing and serious about asthma it's definitely a serious thing nonetheless this is a in issue of hollywood license rather than snowflakes sensitivity we need to look at the fact that they are changing a very precious childhood story and changing the moral of that story not so much the allergies tony i was flicking on my television screen we could go on i think
5:36 pm
i fun day it was a hollywood story a whole a we can movie a kid's hokus pokus i'm not sure if you saw it a lot of the premise is that a which puts a young girl into a cold of boiling water to kill or this is a children's movie it's beloved by many people around the world this particular movie we're talking about is about a block breeze being thrown out an adult you know are we not putting kids in cotton wool here there's a big bad world there that maybe that have to be aware that there's a lot of things can harm them. look we believe that again we understand you know that movies are to entertain but we just simply do not believe that entertainment should include harming another person you know again these are very serious conditions that people die from every day so making light of it or encouraging children to make fun of others because of this or top them with
5:37 pm
their food allergy or force them to eat it as they did with mr mcgregor and this story it truly is just you know a bizarre behavior quite honestly and in two thousand and eighteen we think that peace people should certainly be more sensitive to individuals and to those limitations that they may have and that we should be encouraging children to harm one another are bullying is never ok but they did allergy beling can turn deadly in an instant don't you go ahead you're one of the little wait a minute why does that assume bullying but what why do we assume that the consequence of showing this in the film is going to be bullying humor comedy being able to laugh at ourselves is one of the classic ways as a free society across the pond as well that we've dealt with these serious issues i know that joan rivers made a lot of jokes about being deaf and dumb about living with a husband who was largely deaf and she was she was criticized for that later in her
5:38 pm
life but these are ways we deal with the problems and by laughing at our own problems and our own challenges we actually can encourage education about them rather than discourage bullying i think bullying is a misplaced focus here. yeah. about encouraging education on this topic yeah i'm all about encouraging education on this topic as the mom of a teenager who's lived with a life threatening peanut allergy i certainly believe that there are times that we have had to laugh at the situation just to keep from crying or to live in such anxiety and fear but on the other hand i think that the responsibility of a filmmaker like sony is to put forth educational messages that are truth based and that elevate the conversation rather than hurting others well like any good hollywood we don't hold on just a moment like any good hollywood movie we've got
5:39 pm
a twist here because all the buns a food allergy patient a former elementary school teacher and she joins into the scotian. i will put the same point that i put to told you a moment ago but is this really not true for that we're finding things to be offended by every day it seems new things this was a block breathing through another adult in a kid's movie yes however the there never should be any sort of ganging up on someone having to do with food allergies this is a very sensitive topic for a reason because you know bullying in and of itself is a big problem in schools with children and even with adults and to show in a kids' movie that you know bullying is ok and bullying with food allergies leads you know potentially lead to something fatal which is different than really any
5:40 pm
other type of bullying so you know this movie really did go a step farther. as far as having the bullying and having it be about food allergies . in that case we need to ban viewing and this is delphi or for the cayenne pepper scene towards the end of the film we can just simply not take our children the movies we feel are inappropriate for them and furthermore the idea that we assume that this is going to lead to bullying is a false premise it's a false dichotomy why must this lead to bowling why can't it simply be an isolated scene in a film that we teach our children to interpret one way or another yeah that's the point as well tanya isn't it this is one of innumerable cartoons that were shows car attorneys at each other's throats i'm sure you remember tom and jerry as i do does this mean that those who are brought up watching the particular cartoon you
5:41 pm
know are going to become cruel intolerant it's just the movie. well i'm not certain that again there's any hard data around the impact of those. television shows and or maybe that portray these things i think the bigger issue is that we see this is an opportunity to raise the conversation to certainly help to address what we know is going on what children report day in day out and that is bullying due to food allergy again you cited the case where the child was forced to eat cheese and ultimately died that is not funny there is nothing humorous about looking into the mother's eyes of a child who died of a life threatening allergies and that is exactly what we're no one is laughing at that and are saying. i agree john i agree everyone has the have their own right to take their children to the movies that they choose to see if you
5:42 pm
choose to take your child to this movie that's your choice i simply hope that you'll use that to elevate the conversation and a positive way around food allergy awareness preparedness an anti bullying behavior . one of the points i put to you you wouldn't have heard this was you know does it seem as if our kids are not wrapped up in cotton wool much more than they used to be you know how are they going to be prepared for the wider world if if they're put out of joint by a children's movie it doesn't bear well for the future does it. no i mean i think kids now actually are quite aware of what's going on never mind what's going on in the world and. especially with social media and i think that kids are actually quite aware that's not they're not being you know wrapped up in cotton and unaware kept in a bubble. i think this is a different scenario because this is you know. they're watching these
5:43 pm
rabbits gang up on mcgregor and throwing what they actively know is an allergen into his mouth and then celebrating that and i don't think that that's ok and i don't think as you know as someone who grew up with allergies as someone who is an educator who has taught children for years i don't think that that sends the right message to to children and just in general to the general public who you know some people who don't really understand the severity of food allergies that you know it is lethal potentially and it's not something to joke around about and you know using using epinephrine is not always going to solve the problem and it's unrealistic to show you know to show that in. solving the problem it's good that they did that but it's you know it's important to know that this is this is
5:44 pm
a serious thing and you know there are are funny parts about certain things but food allergies are not one joe maybe it does give the point does the children. actually give them an idea to do something against the other kid in the playground but they're not happy with the might actually lead to a little bit more in the school. look as i said before i am against this film and the scene in this film for entirely different reasons i think it changes the moral of the story from beatrix potter original intent which was to show that it's important to obey your parents and that that will lead to a healthy prosperous life and that if peter rabbit indeed disobeyed and snuck into the garden he might die and that was the original premise of peter rabbit the original story so i'm against this film for unnecessary hollywood license but if if
5:45 pm
we assume if we assume the premise that yes that this is a damaging scene and that it might lead children to weaponize you know biologically weaponize allergens in school then i would at least point out that parents should give proper context to this scene when it is viewed by their children if it is viewed and that's the responsibility of parents not the marketplace to solve. new do you think that beatrix potter would be rolling in her grave by so many people getting offended. i think beatrice potter would be very disappointed and the way that the scene was portrayed and i actually agree with john that again that that they took too much creative license with the theme of peter rabbit and this particular scene in particular i believe does provide an opportunity for education awareness and we've created a website no appetite for bowling dot com where people can go and share their stories where they can also get educational resources to further those
5:46 pm
conversations with their children so they would love for people to visit that no appetite for bowling dot com site ok you want to make a point there are so you trying to get in. no. time to cover it i think i think it's it's just. i agree that education really here is an important point and john said this too that you know if parents are bringing their kids to the theater and seeing this movie it's him it's you know it's a good conversation to have with them because it is important for kids to recognize that this behavior is not ok that gaming is not ok that bullying is not ok you know as a teacher in a school. bullying is something you know is talked about a lot and seen in many different different ways and when you know these types of. messages continue to happen in movies it's you know really making it challenging as
5:47 pm
educators. and i think that you know it's important definitely to have those conversations at home and you know reach out to resources like the no appetite for bullying website and really try to educate yourself ok we're just nearing the end here if you want to offer a few concluding thoughts i'd love to hear them can we start with you. well i would just again encourage parents make your own decision about this but use it as a platform to have a conversation with your children to help them recognize that bullying really is never ok but when it comes to food allergies and life threatening allergies bullying can be deadly and that this is a serious issue it's not something to laugh about not something to joke about and certainly that this should elevate that conversation in a positive way and again i think we applaud sony for the apology we are here
5:48 pm
with resources that allergy now has been at work and the no appetite for boy dot com website to really help support those conversations in each and every home. would be in full agreement with. partially i would say again to my earlier point that the big issue here is that hollywood licens and hollywood values are not necessarily going to reflect those of the larger viewing public and it's incumbent on parents and it's their responsibility to decide not only what their children see in theaters but to explain it to them and to give them proper context for me the biggest issue here is changing a beatrix potter story from its intended purpose and its intended lesson and that really is the biggest tragedy here. you get the final say i never thought i'd be debating peter rabbit but it has been entertaining alley. i
5:49 pm
agree to you know to make sure that if you do see them we need to have a conversation about it as you call your kids and reinforce that bullying is not ok no matter whether it's food allergies or in general and with food allergies that it you know can lead to something lethal which is not. it is even worse so. there i think you know i think that's really important great. food allergy patient and former elementary school teacher of the thoughts all of whom told me a winter's president and c.e.o. of allergy and network of course john griffin republican party official from the great state of texas thank you very much for a good and spirited debate i think i'll be watching the movie off for all this week we've talked it up so much thank you paul. ok is all the news for a show and told us will be here in a few minutes time with more of the global news making your world go round this
