rumors up there are like all these now up there that's like now i know that career politicians like that they're just in it for the photo well you know they know they don't have that melts away right because then i don't want to sell what the kids want even the pros and i'm going back to often and buckled to the n.r.a. last week and it was the same thing you said well it's not a lot of political is on a poll lot of political poll will tell you that every single poll is saying that over half of americans want to deal with this situation and using guns as they say i think just using guns as second moment we talked about that's non-lethal weapons are also all arms you know and that you're only saying i'm going to protect you know nobody's protecting me with bias not on regulating or deregulating non-lethal weapons that i can use to protect myself you know i do know that you have milk if you have a billion the billions of dollars on lobbying great but these kids have the power they can be just as strong as a lobby oh yeah and you know and i think this is one of those issues too that there's so many different great facets to this issue because you can talk about you
7:01 pm
know better security at schools you know physical security things like that you know it's not just the gun debate it's not just the you know it's a magical place in debate as well exactly and i think that is where we get too caught up on and i think that i hope i hope that the these kids out there these seventeen year old kids sixteen younger who are taking this movement and running with it i just hope don't let the adults hijack it no no stick to your guns don't let all the adults come in and hijack it and turn it into a you know a commercial one nike you know a nike commercial down the line you don't want that keep it pure and keep speaking your mind. because all right as we go to break court watchers don't forget to let us know what you think of the topics we've covered a base book and twitter see our poll shows that are to dot com coming up we have deep into the burn pits of iraq and afghanistan with documentary greg love it and burnt his victim military veteran jesse baka you don't want to miss this so stay tuned for watching the hawks.

7:04 pm
you. thank you thank you. thank you thank. you there is nothing the united states collectively enjoys more than lavishing praise money and adulation on the ranks of our nation's fighting force with the pentagon sprawling and unaccounted for budget growing decade by decade at a pace unseen in the modern world and the president apparently making a military parade down pennsylvania avenue one of his biggest domestic priorities for twenty eighteen there appears to be no limit to the love and appreciation we show our troops but it turns out there's a very hard limit indeed of that appreciation and it affects our troops exactly when they need it most and they need our support documentarian greg lovett producer and director of delay deny hope you die explores the long ignored military use of
7:05 pm
burn pits crude throwbacks to a time before modern health and science that leave many returning veterans today physically in limbo for their life earlier we sat down with love and u.s. air force master sergeant jesse baka to learn more about this facet of our military capitol hill has long chosen to not celebrate. thank you so much gentlemen for coming and joining us today and talking about this important important documentary delay deny hope you die how america poisoned its soldiers i want to start and ask you greg what has the reception for the film but like so far. well i've gotten really positive reaction but it really runs the whole scope of emotions from anger and disappointment for. a lot of people who weren't aware that this was going on are really shocked that this is happening that it's still happening that soldiers aren't getting the help that they need and a lot of people that are going through it can really relate to the some of the
7:06 pm
stories that they hear from but from the other soldiers and a lot of people really want to know what they can do to help when it's all over they feel pretty moved and motivated to take action just the what was what was your experience when you're sober for the real thing for the first time i was i was shocked and it because it brought back the reality of what i went through it just brought it all back he did such a good job and showing all that and the emotion like he said it rollercoaster a lot it was it was crazy. now the screening greg was here and d.c. recently and i wonder because i keep hearing this story over the last few years you know i got a rolling thunder every year and i talk to the guys there and those vets are still talking about you know agent orange and now this this is sort of the new agent orange monks that that community. when you were here in d.c. or ever are you hearing any movement from politicians are there any politicians that are standing behind the fight to take care of the soldiers who were affected
7:07 pm
by the burn or just make help more accessible at all there are a few just the senator baka. help get a registry started he actually hosted a private screening for some of his colleagues on capitol hill. we had a congressman from florida at the screening of the rockets was trying to help you can't really say that it's that it's gone mainstream yet it's not a majority of people helping but there are. some politicians here and there that are trying to take up the fight and do what they can do i think that let me ask you as a vet. how what does it feel like to see something that obviously was in the line of duty it was part of your job how do you how do you react as a feel when you see that it's a few senators there congressman like this seems like something that should be across the board that every senator and congress person should be on this shouldn't
7:08 pm
be a question how does it feel when you see things not happening or it's not a mainstream issue you know it's in its infancy right now and our senator from new mexico tom udall and then our congresswoman michele the home. they were just supporting it big time and with senator udall he's a senior senator and very very respected man and when he helped us with the birthday of bill it went like fire the hard part is to keep it hot keep it going and it can die down that's probably the biggest thing right now is we just can't let it you know just focus and with the documentary i believe it will bring it to light that's good that's really good you know i was curious to see you are you mentioned earlier you helped get the burger registry for the off the ground it was regular twenty terrible you know you helped in that process. how many veterans right now are our software are suffering from that associated illnesses that we
7:09 pm
know it's in the thousands it's not just a small number i can't even be accurate on it it's a lot of people and it's more is coming to light and when i get to talk to veterans there are huge frustration there is they're not being they're not being looked at it's not recognized and the reason being is every veteran has. as an individual fight for the veterans administration you can't just take one hundred people on this just get it done it's on you by yourself with your paperwork is that there's no human research for the film is there any idea of how many you know afghanistan and iraqi citizens get affected by this at this point and that's the home another story unfortunately there is research that shows that children are being born with high rates of cancer because of course the smoke from the burn pits doesn't stop at the the border of your base it floats into the communities they were in footage and maybe you've seen a few jets i don't know but of iraq and afghanistan this is actually scavenging in
7:10 pm
the burn pits because you know one man's trash is another man's treasure and so they were exposed to it too and because they come from a different kind of society than we do i don't think they're really doing any research i don't think we know but that wasn't a positive thing that's for sure. do you. are the pits first i think i wonder are these pits still in operation is this something that hand that is actually being done or is the pentagon come up with a new way pardon my says there's probably did they come up with new ways to poison ourselves because it seems like every time if it's not you know things in the soil the bullets everything it's a toxic job so are they being used or have they come up with some safer alternative . they're still being i mean i can only give you and i don't have evidence i don't have details but i have talked to soldiers who contacted me after they heard the document was being made they wanted to provide additional information if possible
7:11 pm
whatever and i've run into many who said that there's still a new unconscionable i just from my personal but my personal feeling i mean it's unconscionable like these men and women are serving their country and whether i agree with that war i'm totally anti-war but whether i agree with it or not putting them in harm's way like that when they're already in harm's way just the horrible thing about it too is a show in the documentary that there was information as far back as two thousand and six that the military themselves knew that these burn pits were reporting those soldiers i have copies of memos that were just completely buried and soldiers were never informed of the hazard of toxins that they were being exposed to so they knew about this they knew the potential for harm and they did nothing about it what was the cost benefit analysis not that you know you were walking in their shoes but what was their justification what was the cost benefit analysis of white or what we know this is harmful but it was just just kind of keep it quiet and just keep dumping and burning and dumping and berdych what was their justification if any in
7:12 pm
all honesty it's a money thing in the military years ago they'd be they cut and cut the military so much that the soldier and the airman the sailor marine all they could do is fight the war as far as love just sticks all that went to a contractor and it was one contractor that didn't have to be at any. eddie he just he was the big fish in the pot and he won everything and it was a money thing i'll give you one example small example i was there in two thousand and four during that summer the incinerators were sitting on the loading dock they were there american taxpayers bought paid from ready to go. contractors didn't install them they were fighting over money to install them while i went back in two thousand and seven and eight they were still sitting in the same spot covered with dirt so these incinerators which you could have put all the trash in which could have cut down on the entire issue whatsoever of inhaling you know the toxics in your lungs never to use simply because it was all kind of
7:13 pm
a body and white with contractors yes another thing i think that's important to remember is that there are also very little legal consequences k.b.r. which was responsible for managing some of these burn pits a subsidiary of halliburton they received indemnification from the us government meaning if they act in any way that is harmful to a soldier or even an iraqi national they will not be held liable so there's a lawsuit going on now it's been going on for about eight or ten years the outcome is kind of pointless because even if they are found guilty in a coup in a court of law it's not going to be k.b.r. who pays for it it's going to be you it's going to be a viewer is it's going to be the american citizen taxpayer that has to foot the bill so there's no consequences so it doesn't really matter how they act is that is that really the issue the all of the springs from at the end of the day is our reliance our sudden brand new warfare reliance on contractors over soldiers you know over men and women have joined up and said ok i've going to serve in the
7:14 pm
military i'm going to you know make the food i'm going to do all the different parts of the military all soldiers used to do that are now contracted out as really this is kind of the ugly result of yes absolutely that it seems i mean in. any any book you read about warfare you know before this century mercenaries are looked down upon the. trust there not that's considered sort of inappropriate in sort of national wars or in words like this and i i think it's odd that we sort of comfortably went into this idea of mercenaries just paid people to do things and they have no consequences that's a really difficult it's of it's a very difficult job as well especially as a citizen or your taxpayer as well very tax money went into all of this. at the age of seventy six stephen william hawking passed on from this time space this week on the anniversary of fame physicist albert einstein's birthday and the

honoring of the mathematical constant known as pie and all special day for the person who fought to degenerative disease you valiantly battled for over fifty years people from around the world made their way to cambridge university to pay respects with a line stretching out the chapel door for a chance to leave notes of condolence for the famed physicist thomas reiter former astronaut and european space agency official was also inspired by hawkins love and fascination for the space beyond our humble planet. posts he was very fond of human spaceflight in fact it's not too long ago that he mentioned that it is important for you to. try to stay on this planet for ever know the motivation behind that by stephen hawking was slightly different one because he said we will manage maybe sometimes to destroy this planet. stephen hawking made us strive farther than we thought possible may we honor his work and memory so far

of the swiss alps this is a place probably more secretive than the pentagon more mysterious than the cia god . is controlled by them and they impose the opening to. the procedures in place of the strictest in all europe masterpieces by artists like picasso and camped and sold inside this warehouse that's where the report comes. naturally discreet commercially discreet but also discreet because they concern fraud. and some of those paintings are linked to dark secrets nobody knows how many of these secrets kept inside the geneva freeport. you'll never obtain an inventory of all the works in the freeport who knows how many there are three hundred three thousand three

hundred thousand is it a matter of confidentiality only is it the world's black box of the art business. more than five thousand people leave syria's militant controlled on klav of eastern guta with many more expected to make it to safety by the end of. frankly. should go away should shut up. the u.k.'s defense secretary results one diplomatic language as tensions between moscow and london increase over the poisoning of the former spy sergei scriptural and his daughter. the investigation into the murder is yet to produce any concrete evidence with u.k. police no saying it could still take weeks to establish a suspect plus my comic ukrainian lawmaker. claims top government officials were involved in organizing the deadly my down the square shooting in kiev in twenty forty.
7:21 pm
nine in the evening this thursday moscow this is r.t. international with me kevin no in here with you thirty minutes latest live update and first significant development to tell you about in the syrian on clever eastern ghouta more than five thousand civilians is said to escape the rebel controlled area of a humanitarian corridor that's been set up by russia and syria is the latest pictures in earlier today from that area the russian defense ministry center for reconciliation in syria believes up to thirteen thousand are expected to reach saved by the end of today humanitarian corridors were set up as part of an effort to implement a u.n. resolution ceasefire in syria however civilians rarely use them till now with reports of militants taking hostages and opening fire on anyone attempting to flee the syrian government's anti terror operations force many militants to cut deals and agreed to let civilians go in exchange for their own evacuations r.t.
7:22 pm
arabic correspondent reports from eastern guta left on my record and i've been in there as a civilian. and we being good right now by the humanitarian character you can see behind me the passage has been recently opened by syrian forces perhaps it's allowing crowds of civilians that many of them are children to live in battle area people are coming from different districts and many civilians were telling about the suffering they face from militants also said they were previously prevented from we and we left you were so difficult when we tried to leave earlier but we were not allowed as it was controlled by terrorists but i doubt if the army advanced on the town and asked us to leave thank god we are safe and sound and we have arrived here at least a good seal which is close to the couple damascus came under rebel control back in two thousand and twelve since then government forces have been trying to recapture the area and fighting intensified their last month the militants have been driven into three pockets with the syrian government holding large parts of the territory
7:23 pm
is the latest but the situation for civilians trapped in the embattled areas remains dire people have been caught in the crossfire and they're suffering shortages of food and supplies. for the big story tonight the defense secretary has told russia to quote shut up and go way over moscow's alleged poisoning of the former spice scriptural of his daughter as the diplomatic fallout over the incident continues. it is absolutely atrocious precious and outrageous what russia to it in seoul sri we have responded to it frankly russia should go away it should churchill up we've certainly raised eyebrows because it begins to fs and feel a little bit surreal when this kind of language starts being used in this kind of language comes into play especially if you're expecting to be taken seriously certainly in the world of diplomacy if u.k. foreign secretary boris johnson today talked about how there is quote overwhelming
7:24 pm
evidence that russia was behind this cripple incident although however when he also was asked about his certainly a certainty on a scale from one to ten he described it to be at nine point ninety eight and he talked about russia being full of smug sarcasm we also heard from nato secretary general talk about this whole ordeal let's take a listen to those i'm afraid the evidence is overwhelming that it is russia and something by the way in the kind of smug sock stick response that we've heard from the russians the to me that indicates their fundamental guilt detract console spirit has taken place against the backdrop of a reckless pattern of russian behavior. over many years we do know that the u.k. has plans to provide a sample of the nerve agents that has been discussed in rebel in connection to this poisoning to the organization for the prague bishan of chemical weapons which
7:25 pm
russia is also a part of but it's not providing a sample to russia despite requests and messages multiple times from russia throughout this past week to be able to analyze this nerve agent and try to assess what exactly it is and we do know of course the foreign ministry in russia has been saying they would like to know what the substance is we've heard from foreign minister sergey lavrov said russia that russia will definitely retaliate in connection to the expulsion of the twenty three russian diplomats certainly a quid pro quo scenario is sort of traditional in these kinds of scenarios but he did underscore that russia will continue to use diplomatic language correspondent in london so as it stands at the moment germany france america and the u.k. have no issued a joint statement on the poisoning which say that it was highly likely to have been orchestrated by the kremlin it requests that moscow provide the organization for the prohibition of chemical weapons with information about the novacek nerve agent
7:26 pm
program comes full of british government's decision wednesday to take measures against russia it is address to parliament promises to reason that twenty three diplomats will be expelled from the u.k. she said high level bilateral meetings will be suspended for them or other measures she said that includes a visit from russia's foreign minister sergei lavrov that's been rescinded that invitation and on top of the the no official delegation from the u.k. attending the upcoming football world cup this summer we spoke to the russian ambassador to the u.k. alexander about the instant backlash it's triggered he says he doesn't believe the case is being handled appropriately. things were going. under the british course of occasion agent a two three four. is the russian region we asked the british officially by a node to share the samples of that in order to make our own conclusions and we would knight so all the investigation about the scruple is classified we don't have any
7:27 pm
information we don't have any access nobody saw even the pictures of the people in the hospital whether they alive or maybe the just in the good health. so nobody talked to the doctor you know the reason absolutely no transparency in this case and this is worries us but whether we under the international law in the vienna convention we have to give the access to these people because they're russian citizens and we're also being denied so basically britain doesn't respect the international law and the way how they're behaving. is just. puts a lot of questions. that full interview will be airing on friday just to let you know for now let's get more on this as cross to international affairs commentator marco gas ha there marco what do you make it of your head that clearly or the russian ambassador is claim that there's not enough transparency or he's saying no transparency on the part of the british authorities does there need to be i guess
7:28 pm
cripples daughter is still a russian citizen since she's gone but was before was to moscow so i guess had a russian passport as far as mrs cripple's concerned i don't know if he had a russian passport or not i mean i ate how much effort should the u.k. be making here now to try and be more transparent. well it almost doesn't matter whether they're russian citizens or not we have an instance where someone in this case russia is being accused so the someone being accused is not being told what the evidence is against them in fact they've been denied sight of the evidence that they could then question investigate and contest so in in the british legal system in any western legal system that would be viewed as utterly scandalous but it seems that the british establishment thinks that that's the way to treat russia which clearly is illegal as the embassador mention it's also immoral and it also prevents a proper investigation which may indeed be the point of making all the evidence
7:29 pm
opaque where you think that now it's latently obvious to the british authorities are suppose there's an element of heat at the moment and political pressure and public opinion at the moment over there in britain and you think behind the scenes we are going to see some more transparency very soon though. well it's a question of of motive really who benefits from the whole thing and what we would see transparency if there was a desire to end all sorts out the situation also comes on final understanding of what really happened rather than rushing to judgment as is happening now but it does seem that this the timing of this whole episode before major events in russia including the world cup is really designed to discredit the russians in the court of public opinion without giving them a chance to address the basis on which they've been demonized so i don't see this stopping anytime soon because as we saw before the olympics there's always a raft of issues suddenly come up to accuse the russians with designed to leave
7:30 pm
a sour taste in the mouth of people who would otherwise commend the russians for organizing successful events without it i said he is ready to plant at least an hour any diplomacy to the russian vent seek ceterus side to even try to sort out what's going on here it's not going to be helped by the fact today that the u.k. defense secretary was telling moscow to basically what he did he said shut up and go away it's not exactly very diplomatic or a helpful way forward in practical terms is it to try and get to the bottom of this well that's right but i mean this is a politician over lesser competence who's trying to punch above his weight who doesn't really care about russian sensibilities because of course in fact the angrier the russians get with his words the more money he's likely to get back in his military budget for so-called defense against the the good russian bear so he doesn't mind offending the russians what he really wants to do is to impress the british at home with how hawk like he is at the moment every.
