father and little sister all died in the fire. and another news moscow says it won't tolerate borish nurse and will respond as two dozen countries worldwide expelled russian diplomats in a show of solidarity with britain which blames more scope for the poisoning of a former double agent. a warm welcome you're watching r.t. international with me nicky aaron in our top story this hour anger is running high in the russian city of camera for where people have gathered at the headquarters of the regional government sixty four people including many children lost their lives in a huge fire that broke out at a shopping and entertainment complex on sunday wednesday has been declared a national day of mourning in russia the protesters on demand. and justice for the

victims people have been rallying throughout the day and the crowd has been repeatedly chanting the word truth. president putin put aside official business and flew out to siberia he laid flowers at a makeshift memorial at the shopping center he also visited survivors at a local hospital and said that the tragedy brings mixed emotions. when you hear for the first time how many people have died children died so you don't just want to cry if you want to scream. but after you hear what's happening here frankly you feel very different because the deputy governor of the region was seen asking the crowd for forgiveness. you don't you stupid boy you look at history when you're going to make a good. speech ya go out those good no it's got the right yeah yeah yeah yeah even though i'm there with the thank you. yes sure especially the christian if he

ever spoke up about it before but we've yet to know you don't know yet if you didn't hear him did you know that. and you've. been talking to locals in kemah about the tragedy here's his report the city is a royal dump the. emotional. and probably the perfect metaphor to sum up one question on everybody's mind in one way or another or another is this kid. should be cut off from the soldier in the middle should the sleep this is not the issue in the tough tough tough tough tough. tough tough. week there was a virtual fence at the first let's take a look at how much you have will help the cause i'm here for you'll see. something
8:04 am
for such a class for the first one so that it's not just what god says i must clearly the emotion here the emotion level is borderline hysterical people want to know why why the five prevention system we didn't see why people had to break through fire exits the very bad students were supposed to lead people to safety were locked soon people had to do limited window for their lives running for their lives they wanted to know why the person knows all the shopping mall you're snowed trained how to behave how to help people he said you and such an emergency show you state of helping they actually competently rescue. yes. there are some i ran upstairs cinema stuff didn't let me say they pushed me my daughter asked me why no one was saving her i asked if i meant to do something but he just stared. around two third
8:05 am
floor firemen stood there do nothing in front of the door my daughter saw me that she loved me and that she was suffocating i told him to get down on the floor and back her not to die the children are dear it isn't a matter of how many are dead now unless we change something hundreds of others could die no matter how long we stand here no matter how loud we shout no one will hear us. this is of course is only a portion of experiences inside that shopping mall talking to people here talking to survivors we know that security guards actually often warn people about the beginning fire instead of a fire alarm and we've heard some stories of security guards heroically carrying children out of the blaze now another very important thing people want to know he is whether or not the authorities are lowering down the number of the dead in the
8:06 am
blaze because. everyone we've talked to from taxi drivers to bystanders passers by and people who brought flowers to the vigil all seem to believe that the actual number of people who died in the blaze could reach three hundred and five hundred people and that the authorities are trying to shoot down so to speak now of course it isn't a stand of all these that people are afraid that people are scared that this will repeat again this cared of losing more of their own because of course every person here is living this tragedies feeling this tragedy on a deeply personal level just to give you an idea some people went to the morgue to see with their own eyes whether or not the rumor is true and here's here's basically the. two different points of view on this the authorities claimed sixty four bodies were found and a few are missing so numbers are not that high and. no one believes that's why
8:07 am
because it was a sunday there were a lot of people it was a school holiday free movie tickets were handed out people arrived on tour buses that is widely known information yet luckily i was at the morgue on volgograd street there are sixty seven bodies there sixty four of them from the shopping center burned bodies three others are not related to that incident there are a lot of children that i was it is very small so everyone knows someone from the hospital or in the emergency services they may have access to some exclusive list people exchange information and say that you shouldn't believe the number is it's not sixty four it's three hundred so it creates a chain everyone shares it all social media messages video and screen shots appear but there is a huge possibility that some of the video is not from the shopping center but from another fire some people are exaggerating it i just couldn't take it any more i
8:08 am
wanted to find out for myself or my putin who landed here in camera in the morning and he has already laid flowers at the vigil and talked to some of the citizens to comfort them over their loss he promised the investigation to be tried as transparent as possible his words war by the deputy governor also promised for everything to be out there in the open the russian investigative committee is in its turn putting under arrest five people who they had earlier detained in connection with the blaze now among those people is the owner of the shopping mall the fire safety chief and one of the security guards the investigators believe that it was the security guard who actually switched off of the fire prevention system and that's why you didn't. work so right now it looks that everything is being done to bring all those responsible to justice that plays in camera for has been called one of the deadliest in basra in the past one hundred years here's
8:09 am
8:10 am
so it's sort of what it. people in hungary ukraine and moldova have been laying flowers at the russian embassies in their capital cities in cities all across russia vigils have been organized to remember those that lost in the tragedy here are the pictures from the eastern city of micah down flowers were also laid at the russian embassies in the former soviet republics of kyrgyzstan and to g q stan. here were drawing pictures

now from the scene it shows the ferocity of the blaze and the scale of the devastation the surrounding streets of still blocked off and we can clearly see the roof has collapsed emergency teams are still working inside the building artie's mind takes a closer look at the human side of the story. these people tired of those mincing their words of understating of keeping information back this is what these protests in the world were about people demanding action people demanding information to be kept in the nude to be kept abreast of the investigation demanding that those accountable be brought to justice and when putin when putin came out he said that you know reading about this talking to people who had lost loved ones it makes you so sad you want to cry it's devastating and then talking to officials you get
8:12 am
a completely different picture each people presumably trying to cover their own hides trying to protect themselves but putin didn't mince his words and he said that those responsible will be held accountable. for. the mind tonight. literature if you just give the shit. in your. book you were premature. with just a little of. the he said this is a huge tragedy i mean this is a small city and that to this lee many people will know someone who had lost a child a son a daughter in this horrific fire but the thing with the with the trauma the psychological trauma is that people need an explanation it is part of our psychology we need an explanation we need information we need to to have a picture of what is going on and we need someone to blame when the fire itself
8:13 am
began in the arcade room in the play room it began as a result of an energy malfunction or perhaps faulty wiring short circuit it was either that or the second version which is that it was an open fire that it was said someone. lighted matches the something and bang it all escalated very quickly though that version is less likely say investigators and once the fire began everything that could go wrong went wrong the fire exits were locked they were blocking the far alarm system had either been disabled or was broken malfunctioning for more than a week since the nineteenth so that was out of service there was a backup alarm system that security have to press a button and everybody would be aware that there was something wrong evacuate that didn't happen for whatever reason security did not activate that system and as
8:14 am
a result you had you had people and their first warning that something was wrong is a huge thick wall of smoke rushing towards them and smoke is the real killer it isn't the flames the body shuts down in the smoke but the the other problem is and this is perhaps as a human being this is perhaps the most traumatizing is that the doors in the cinema in the screen rooms the doors were shut so all the people inside were trapped usually you have someone on the door demanding checks tickets lets people in they shut these doors and the door man left so once it all began the room began filling up with smoke and you had cartoons running in them many of the many of the people in there with kids they can't get out because the doors are shut and they start calling their mothers their fathers begin them to come rescue them eventually got to the point where you had kids realize that new rescue was coming when you realized that they were going to die who in their mother's live loved ones and

saying final goodbyes you know i love you so it was it was horrific what happened in them earlier i put together a report about you know names and names and numbers and numbers but when you realize that with these people we're just like you and i when you get to new. i'm just a little bit you understand the gravity of this this tragedy but the view is may find some of what we're about to show the stressing for rural youngsters a visit to the big city is always an adventure these twelve year old classmates went to town and they went bowling ice skating to the cinema it would be their last adventure to leave. this. monument. we didn't use it.

dozens and dozens dead but they aren't just numbers they all had names lives all the compensation in the world won't cover their family's loss especially given that so many of the victims were children masha was there with her grandmother and she only turned ten last week and posted this photo in line exactly a decade is all she got in this world. both she and her grandmother perished. tiana an english teacher she was there with her daughter who survived that yana got out of the building before hearing that others was still trapped she went to help rescue who she could strangers but she never came back out you were the best teacher in the world right of former students you

didn't deserve this we will all remember you did ask if you could tell it to you. this is what you did. little ratable or pictured here with his mom and dad she wasn't with them but imagine her pain when she had to identify the bodies of her child and husband or even surviving is easy. some say he jumped others that his father threw him out of the window in a desperate effort to save his little boy before succumbing to the smoke him self there are too many to mention here but the point is made a list of names is one thing but it's only when you get to know them just a little that the depth of this tragedy really hits you. we do have an update on

the little boy who jumped out of a top storey window to escape the inferno he was put into a medically induced coma due to the severity of his injuries but is now consciously again however he doesn't yet know that he lost both of his parents and his little sister in the fire. meanwhile donations have been flooding in for the victims the russian red cross alone has received fourteen million rubles that's almost a quarter of a million dollars so far today yesterday the russian red cross announced a fundraiser to help those affected by the incident people have responded extremely well they are not indifferent to the suffering of others as of today we've raised over fourteen million rubles from all over russia and also from abroad to greatly think those who have contributed. well there were doubts he will of course be following the developments over the coming hour as a reminder for you the fire and the wind to tear a shopping center that claimed the lives of sixty four people many of them were

children six people still missing recovery teams are continuing to work in the burned out complex in the siberian say as that is happening though people are rallying in the city center demanding from the author i say yes president putin has flown into the area has promised that everyone responsible for the tragedy will be brought to justice. was. was. what politicians do something to. put themselves on the line they get accepted or rejected. so when you want to be president i'm sure. for some want to be rich. but you'd like to be first this is what before three of the people that i'm interested always in the why. should.

expulsions are to show solidarity to britain which accuses moscow of orchestrating the poisoning of a former spy and his daughter earlier this month the u.k.'s foreign secretary has already thanks to london's allies for their robust response i've got a number of discussions with card courts across the u.s. and elsewhere which has helped foster and on president jude. international response let's reduce russian art. let's get more now from our correspondent aneesh sethi good to see you talk us through boris johnson statement some strong words out there . here save just had the u.k. foreign secretary boris johnson pairing before and peace at westminster following the news of the mass expulsions of russian diplomats now he concluded that the u.k. has had a number of discussions with the e.u. and the u.s. which helps with this international response now he said it was
8:22 am
a considerable gesture from the twenty three countries that had made this decision now it's a very similar response in fact to the u.k. prime minister to reason may who said that the u.k. stands shoulder to shoulder with the with nato as well now on monday more than one hundred russian diplomats were expelled from twenty three countries is the largest collective response of russian diplomats in history now with many of the e.u. member states as well saying that they stand in solidarity with the u.k. now russia house repeatedly denied the involvements with the poisoning of his daughter on march the fourth and the russian foreign minister has responded to this wave of expulsion saying russia won't tolerate these measures let's listen to what sergey lavrov had to say. but. no one would be willing so it's all right says burgess. so we will soon see
8:23 am
moscow's response now there have been countries that have said they will take no action and they have no intention of expelling russian diplomats now these e.u. member states of austria greece portugal it's a list of eleven other countries that perhaps want to keep an open dialogue with russia it's what the president of the european commission stressed summits last week but the largest response that we've seen has been from outside of the e.u. to the u.s. now where a sixty russian diplomats will have to leave u.s. soil let's take a listen to what's washington had to say the president spoke with many foreign leaders or european allies and others and encourage them to join the united states . in this announcement. now these measures have been taken despite the ongoing investigation despite russia saying that they will want to cooperate with the investigation and despite the chemical weapons bodies saying it will still take two to three weeks before they can finalize their results and they said thank you
8:24 am
for the update let's get some more analysis on this now with our guests tara mccormack here's the international politics britain's let's say university mr clark thank you for joining us on the program what do you make of this blitz in replicating britain steps in sending russian diplomats out the country why is that not all countries want to get on board. well i think this reflects very real splits in the e.u. regarding their relationship with russia. so we have countries such as austria that want to repair relations and actually so to do is a totally and we'll see also there will be a change of government in italy sooner this is under negotiation and i imagine that again there may be more positive overtures made towards russia so i think it does reflect real splits within the e.u. i think that also there has been a wide a number of countries expelling diplomats i think what we have seen in the u.k.
8:25 am
or in the e.u. is that these numbers are towards the token and of reactions britain as we start i think twenty three that. ukraine thirteen but france and germany four and other countries fear diplomats so these are sort of fairly token reactions i think the most. the largest kind of expulsion has surprisingly been from america. it's the left the gate into the square power poisoning is not yet concluded it could take another week another two weeks what do you think could have convinced these countries to be so sure that russia's responsible for those poisoning. well i'm afraid this has been a total scandal you know because the british government we have the british police saying this investigation could take months we have the organization of prevention of chemical weapons testing now again this could take weeks months we have all

sorts of questions that are unanswered for example the sun newspaper at the weekend reported that now police are reporting about st paul and his daughter's phone was turned off before. price of the attack the sort of interest where was a. we have reports as well again in the sun which actually suddenly is doing it seems to be a little bit about actual journalism on the case that scruple is reported to have been travelling an awful lot you know so all sorts of other questions now we watch we have seen no proof or we have seen is also in our session from the government and. as far as we are to believe newspaper reports it was on thursday night at the. dinner that carries them a basically made an argument her fellow.

greetings and salutations spring is here hawk watchers as we grow in the summer you can feel a great energy charge in the air we saw in action over the weekend as roughly eight hundred thousand protesters took to the streets of washington d.c. demanding an end to the uniquely u.s. nightmare school shootings and gun related violence but as the old saying goes the more things change the more things stay the same you see as these kids teenagers parents and teachers applauded the powerful speeches demanding an end to violence their elected officials both democrat and republican went about business as usual and guaranteed over seven hundred billion dollars worth of violence worldwide i present to you the great one point three trillion dollar omnibus spending bill
