i. the blame game over the poisoning of a formal russian double agent in the u.k. generated more questions than answers this week the british foreign secretary to account for his anti russian accusations as the test of the nerve agent used so it was unable to identify the source. meanwhile doctors say both former russian spy and his daughter are no longer in a critical condition a close relative who's been refused a visa to visit them has written to him to recently. these are scared that i will find out something more like you would tell me something yes they try to make me not the problem but i might die. if i fail here i will go to the. headlines at least ten palestinians are killed after israeli forces used live

ammunition against demonstrators in gaza. and this is really dangerous towards the sea and one of the largest u.s. media groups comes under fire for telling its. scripted promo. fake news. welcome to the week here on r.t. international with me daniel hawkins. joining us this. war of accusations has been raging this week over the poisoning of a former russian double agent and his daughter a british military laboratory admitted it couldn't identify the source of the nerve agent used although the government has consistently claimed there was a direct link to russia what takes up the story. it's
6:02 am
a right old kid on drugs on the one hand you skip the trial screamed guilty and jump to the punishment part on the other your own guys come out and say hold on there's no evidence and now this is by we're living experts at the defense science and technology laborde three at porton down made clear that this was a military grade not be choked nerve agent produced in russia we have not verified the precise source you have not been able to establish that this was made in russia as i said it's our job to provide you know the scientific evidence that identifies for the particular nerve agent is there to be clear you're not able at porton down to say where it is from we haven't yet been able to do that well that's embarrassing alright keep calm first goo back on your word and just to be sure delete any old tweets then riposte experts who say the
6:03 am
opposite of what you said our experts have precisely identified in their region as novacek it is not and has never been our responsibility to confirm the source of the agent now pretend that nothing happened which is hard to do in the into that really the brits ended up having to explain themselves and conveniently scapegoated the poor fellow who transcribed the briefing. one of the tweets was truncated and did not accurately report and past his words we removed this tweet you remember what i said about scapegoating he really did but barge johnson himself had said almost the same thing said it's on video you argue that their source of shock is russia how did you manage to find it out so quickly when i look at the the evidence i mean the people from from porton down they were absolutely
6:04 am
categorical and i asked the guy myself i said are you sure and he said there's no doubt wouldn't want to be in their shoes right about now yet they did find a way around it a simple statement saying that boris johnson didn't mean it like that where the foreign secretary said then and what putin donna said recently is fully consistent with what we've said throughout having taken things so far so fast they can't afford to do a u. turn this investigation could end in two ways with proof of russia's guilt or with an uncomfortable silence and hope that everyone forgets until then boris keep doing what you do every day you work for the figure on the. russian. russia.
6:05 am
well there's also going to rate of criticism on twitter from britain's main opposition labor party over johnson's assurances russia was behind the poisoning one commented on his a notorious german t.v. interview asking if you want to delete that as well other stressed the need to check the evidence while labor m.p. chris williamson called johnson downright dangerous and claimed incidents being used as a diversionary tactic. it seems to me the government were indulging in political point scoring particularly boris johnson who raced ahead of the evidence and use this terrible incident not so much as a smoking gun but more of a smokescreen really it was a very convenient wasn't for the government to use this as a way of diverting attention from their own difficulties of a. policy let's be absolutely clear before we start raising international tensions in this way this is huge implications for more sensible to take a measured approach and be clear about the evidence and lead all the evidence so a script and his daughter were found unconscious on
6:06 am
a park bench in the city of salzburg on march the fourth british officials later revealed the pair had been poisoned with a military grade nerve agent called novacek a type which was first developed in the soviet union at the time prime minister to resign may said those subjected to such a powerful nerve agent may never recover for tourist group art is the niece of the former double agent she's been trying to get to the u.k. to visit relatives a visa application though was rejected says she's since written a letter to the british prime minister. just for a few new people but now the whole world is stuck in about a political scandal does the heart of the scandal are real people who put together all documents missing from their placation and i hope you know you're a critic tricks will prevent me from seeing my love once i ask the u.k. and you personally to reconsider the decision to refuse my visa they are scared that i will find out something more that he will tell me something yes they try to
6:07 am
many please me not the crime one but m i five i will fight to the end if i fail here i will go to the u.n. . well some british media outlets have suggested the application was blocked because the government fears she was being coached by the kremlin others claimed the russian government's using victoria script as a pawn in a political game of victoria herself says she was not surprised that having her visa request rejected she is questioned whether the british authorities have something to hide by preventing a relative from visiting in an exclusive interview to the roughly video agency victoria claims that in a phone conversation with her cousin you are of course being prompted pachelbel at first i was happy that you were called but it was clear that she wasn't speaking her own words she was being prompted you can't hear it in the recording but there's a start she was told yes you can talk which meant that she was being guided she had the number dialed for her because she obviously couldn't remember all nine figures

ambulances are already here too pretty to take on the injuries that we're now the injured from days really i mean that by live bullets and i mean nation and it tear gas canisters this is one of the injuries that was injured just right now from the alley for both bullets and at the tear gas and the red cross ambulance and on the medics are trying to save all the injuries as you see the palestinian protesters are running away from the tear gas canisters that were thrown just right now on the protesters. so these are unexploded did gas canisters that are being targeted and suited on the palestinian protesters thousands of hundreds of palestinians have been here and we saw palestinian protesters burning view as flags and israeli flags and also saying slogans against the israelis and the americans. on
6:10 am
a wave of rallies began at the end of march with organizers claiming the last four weeks during the past seven days more than twenty palestinians have been killed many more have been wounded during what's being called the great march of return several journalists have also been injured in the clashes one of whom later died yes some more target works for a local t.v. production company gaza health officials said he was shot while filming close to the border and died later in hospital and this photo you can see he was wearing a jacket marked press these very military said it only fired at those who called instigators of the violence a spokesperson for the i.d.f. did post on twitter they said rioters attempted to cross the security fence and set off explosives in an attempted terrorist attack or fourteen of the fifteen members of the un security council back to call for an independent investigation into all the deaths caused by israel's use of live ammunition during the rallies it was blocked by only one nation the united states we discussed the issue with

a human rights activist from palestine and an analyst from israel. no record that mentioned that there was fire from the palestinian side there was a few who could cross the fences to hang the palestinian flag on different things only and they are that they were only throwing stones or burning wheels on the border every day is razor thin that while not accepting with the americans the inquiry commission to come to gaza to investigate of the killing of the twenty nine b. will and the injuries have been here some of them were actually hamas fighters and some us dollars and most of those who were killed last week well among them was with people who are paid by hamas. and actually work for hamas as terrorists so would really want to organize to what attacks against israel and and what and

the sinclair broadcast group which owns almost two hundred television stations and broadcast on around six hundred channels proudly proclaims its mission statement that it provides stories that make a difference the key to our success is concentrate. on all platforms well and its recent promos there's not much of a choice or a difference it seems our ratings are misrata libya is just sort of our treasure valley communities deal pass a loss christmas communities eastern i was. in communities we are extremely proud of the quality balance journalism that c.b.s. news produces but we just. do your. stories very plaguing our country as you can see anchors from different channels reading the same script there which was by the way leaked to some media outlets and it looks like they only had to fill in their names. and i'm the greatest responsibility is to serve on northwest communities. and if you look closely you'll

well all three leaders have once again confirmed their commitment to preserving syria's territorial integrity each of the countries though has their own views on how the situation in syria should be handled particularly the turkish leader has reaffirmed his stance against the united states providing support for the kurdish fighters in the north a lot so with conflicting reports from washington over whether america is planning on pulling out of the country. it doesn't seem for now though that the u.s. is willing to give up its kurdish allies in syria in favor of its nato ally turkey any time soon this exclusive footage was obtained by a video news agency filmed on the ground in northern syria shows that american military base with u.s. made military equipment our reporter spoke to kurdish fighters at that base here's what they said about the purpose of the set up. at the heart of the base was

welcome to worlds apart from this couple saga is far from over but it has already had its toll on russia's relations with europe prompting nearly two dozen countries at britain's urging russian diplomats home but as the british narrative continues to unravel can this rush to judgment pave the way to a more measured policy down the line well to discuss that i'm now joined by eric

jones director of european and eurasian studies at johns hopkins university professor jones it's great to talk to you thank you very much for your time well thank you very much for having me on your show now we are in the midst of this really unprecedented u.k. russia rao a rally that has already the entire world in the vault to be just witnessed pretty heated exchanges at the united nations security council the other day and if you put the political posturing aside what lies between russia and the u.k. both geographically and economically and to some extent politically is europe is it clear to you at this point what stance europe is going to take in this whole controversy well i think i think it's pretty clear that europe has been united in its russian policy particularly since about two thousand and fourteen and that europe has been united particularly in response to this incident so i don't i don't suspect that we're going to see deep divisions emerging in europe either around
6:29 am
this issue or or and russia pie. more generally a lesser of a substantial material reason for that to happen now you said that europe is united and from what i know it's only about two thirds of the e.u. countries that actually showed solidarity with the u.k. which is not a small number by any means but at the end of the day expelling one two or even four diplomats like germany for example is more symbolic than practical joe many after doing that actually approved both the construction and the alteration of the second and those stream pipeline so i wonder if there is perhaps a bit of a gap between what the european leaders say and russia and the what they actually do so ok but but there's a big gap between what we mean by russia and when what we mean by the russian government right so the particular conflict the screwball conflict is not a conflict between europe and russia per se it's a conflict between european governments and the russian government over what they believe in europe to be russian government actions in
6:30 am
a particular european country now does that mean we're going to shut down all relations with russia as a country no but does it mean that we're going to change relations with russia as a government yes and in that context expelling diplomats is not just a symbolic gesture it's a very practical gesture to signal displeasure from one government to another well but if it's a very practical gesture i wonder how does it actually address day of this rather if you using chemical weapons in europe because i would think that even that was indeed the case of the european governments blood the narrative that the u.k. government is now trying to put forward that would call for military action don't you think that expelling a diplomat. to lead for kind of a front if we try to solve every problem like this with military action the world would be a much more chaotic place than it is today of course you don't address chemical weapons use only through the expulsion of diplomats the expulsion of diplomats as a symbol of displeasure or or discomfort.
