than follows from the start. moving in these in these are different and involve constantly involved in. our other headlines the u.s. government has admitted to helping the lebanese armed forces in the fight against the islamic state however it's fear some of the money and equipments ending up in the hands of hezbollah which washington of course for gods as a terror group the issue was recently raised in congress and levanon hizbollah a terrorist organization you just towns to see all the its balance of tens of thousands of illegal rockets a violent extremist organization like this or lebanese. is
10:33 pm
a menace lebanese hezbollah a terrorist organization official figures show that since two thousand and six the u.s. has provided nearly one point seven billion dollars to help the lebanese army the security assistance funds were mainly used to provide equipment facilities and training and after the disclosure a state department official said the u.s. does keep track of all equipment handed over that decreases the risk of hezbollah using it however some members of congress along with regional experts argue there's no difference between the lebanese army and hezbollah which is supported by iran experts told us they're not convinced. to not only put money with love these were she to put u.s. security forces that's a bad mistake on the united states perjurer made this decision because it is below basically used to trolling the entire lebanese armed forces and destroyed them just change for months worse. there's. major terrorist were by iran

and of course the conflict between the united states and iran knows very great as well as a conflict between us ally israel and hezbollah and iran to just doesn't make sense to me we didn't do our own work correctly states we don't want to work there we don't want to support the lebanese army worst the us administration. quite bluntly. puts it as if it has only one objective in believe on the syrian lebanese and even jordanian area and death is the defeat of isis they do not care about all the rest of course they don't want the conflict aeration between israel and hezbollah but as long as they believe that the lebanese armed forces are helping them against isis they would rather ignore all the rest for israel it could be helping. him directly and

10:38 pm
a so-called texas. if you really want to drill down to why texas has had such an increase in support over the last decade it really boils down to one thing texans are sick and tired of being governed by one hundred eighty thousand pages of federal laws at the core texans believe that the best people to govern taxes are texans this idea that somehow this political and economic union called the united states of america can be fixed is a myth it is a fallacy what we have seen is in any attempt to repair or reform the federal union has been met with nothing but lip service and outright insult and outrage here in texas they proposed as a political support in texas for texas independence or at the minimum a vote on texas independence and right now even with the president donald trump in office we are still facing significant structural issues in the united states and
10:39 pm
texas independence needs to be on the table this texas nationalist movement was formed back in two thousand and nine it since gains more than three hundred fifty thousand supporters they're actively campaigning for an independence referendum and want restrictions on government spending to further reduce economic integration with the united states according to polls small town hall fall of independent supporters all republicans we took to the streets of the state to see what locals think about a potential texas. ridiculous . oh yeah that's a good idea in the pens definitely you know. i. we are in it in that we rely on the rest of the country you know some people are right so you take it from a car here. you don't really like you know we've had this discussion about texas

was. doing this. with. the so i needed to see this because i think it is disrespectful and clearly beyond the limits you don't present a play dealing with out of hitler hitler's birthday literally incite some people with far right views to come to the theatre i think that's wrong because it takes only him i would not do it like that i think it's very provocative i would have done something like that but we should not restrict freedom of speech or the arts i doubt that i wouldn't wear a star of david or a swastika just because someone tells me to. want to upset because i think i can
10:42 pm
show solidarity without a davis star and show compassion for the victims of the holocaust as for those who take a swastika i find that outrageous but generally i like the idea behind this performance in hackney bloodstock if i choose to wear a swastika which i think i will do my motive will be to see how people react by him come. local authorities have denied the play breaches german laws banning the display of nazi symbols. sparked a row among residents though a local action group has the squad the production unacceptable and called for a boycott the play's director though says he only wanted to create an environment for debate. we need more awareness and we cannot miss with simple discussions but through action i want to provoke a discussion and get people arguing and that's exactly the idea behind this production. time magazine's released its annual list of the top one hundred most

influential people in the world appear to have missed one thing that most media do talk about a fair amount. to criminal. influence afraid to say negative. while in the pool. it's highly likely that russia was responsible we do hold russia culpable culpable culpable for the attempted murder. is culpable. is with. overwhelmingly likely that it was his district.
10:44 pm
look if i were to say how many times has his name appeared or russia or combinations thereof just mention it does that not indicate influential good or bad info bunch of those immediate positive or negative agle be it could be negatively influence i guess but just by virtue of how many times you mentioned it how many times has this picture bit of the cover how many times has the word russia russia and russia those russian interference how many times on every single day and you mean to tell me despite the foregoing he's not influential comma. splices from the team here at all to international join us in about thirty five minutes time for the latest global update.

10:46 pm
time after time soon we're going underground is today u.k. prime minister tourism a metre australian counterparts as the nato back to war in syria threatens to cripple fuel supplies to the island nation within a matter of days coming up on the show from south america to syria we talk about the history of international gangsterism a new liberal dries ation alleged by the man who could have been mike pence twenty sixteen usa vice presidential candidate john and stole it well folks commonwealth what was this week's meeting of leaders representing two point four billion people actually like we talked to one premier about i.m.f. imperialism cambridge analytic i assume is and the tourism a deportation scandal plus the public are absolutely despise that type of behavior
10:47 pm
from where. it takes place despicable behavior in britain's house of commons civil coming up in today's going underground but first this week marks nearly fifty years since ever more violent u.s. bombing in vietnam sparked protests across the united states with images of veterans discarding their medals to fight a war that would go on to kill millions. of. medal in a country that doesn't mean anything but pretty medal. so i got a medal. so i got a medal i got it. all right on becoming an air national. guard. now from south america just syria the u.s. and nato nations continue to practice what our next guest describes as international gangsterism he fought in the vietnam war and ever since it's what against new liberal interventionism by nato nations right around the world joining
10:48 pm
me. after new york city and the u.s. is the founding executive director of the u.s. human rights network and twenty sixteen u.s. a green party vice presidential candidate john mubarak agilent thanks for coming and going on the run white calling on the u.s. to pull out of syria well thank you for for inviting me we we are making the call like many people around the world for the u.s. to seize is intervention into that nation we say see that as a intervention that is illegal and immoral there's no objective right that the u.s. has to are to intervene into syria and certainly not to quote unquote punish a no other government and their leaders so we say this is a continuation of the kind of of minelli immoral but illegal international gangsterism that will seem the u.s.
10:49 pm
authorities involved in for quite some time and so we say now is the time to draw a clear line to clear up people's lawyer and if you will and say us out of syria us cease the the illegal interventions around the country around the world cease the international against a rhythm that has undermined international credibility with a concert at national level and created a very dangerous environment in which. many many states believe that they can operate above it outside of meant to national law and morality the leader of the opposition it does call it legally questionable why do you believe president trump and mccrone prime minister may bomb syria before u.n. inspectors are allowed to investigate the alleged chemical attack in the damascus area of syria i think to the u.s. was it has the objective of the stablish being a a justification for
10:50 pm
a. remaining and syria and of course they needed the political coverage from there to their two partners if you will and so i think both great britain and and and france have their own particular reasons but you know those three states are part of the the what what we refer to as the axis of domination the us navy so the axis of domination so these three states operating as they do these three states that are a part of the western european colonial project have operated together before and it's quite clear they have objective common interests in the middle east so it wasn't surprising as unfortunate and we're glad that there are significant numbers of people in all of those nations they're happy express their opposition ironic
10:51 pm
then of course your call for the us to leave syria was echoed by president donald trump shortly before the ask right well of course and that was what appeared to be the the rational response from of from his administration but it's quite clear that there was a very powerful forces inside the u.s. state. that the a withdrawal from syria as being against objective u.s. interests and almost like clockwork then we have this so-called chemical attack in syria and then the response from the top administration and the other two political is if you will so it is quite clear that there is there is real attention think even contradictions within the u.s. administration and donald trump. who appears to be always in charge is quite clear that he may not be as in charge. as people might think
10:52 pm
i'm sure the well they have in these a palace and number ten have denied that they're pujols of your president why you doing powerless to the. to this situation in syria to the anglo-american backed israeli bombardment of gaza. what we clearly show that there is a proper see here but if the concern is supposed to be to protect human life if if the activities of the of the syrian government that supposedly was involved in this chemical attack was so egregious that it required international intervention then we raise a very simple question as the israelis are involved in shooting with live ammunition on protesters murdering people on the gaza border one would assume then that there would be calls for some kind of of interventions
10:53 pm
of sanctions. un security council resolutions when it comes to to israel but clearly it appears that palestinians are killable that there is a different set of morals involved in these two situations and we say that basically. yes if you want stand one standard of morality one standard of it's national law and that no nation no nation state should be above the law so we point that very simple. example out to show that basically the must be other kinds of interest and motivations involved in this intervention then a supposedly concern for international peace or for humanitarian interests the israeli government denies it's deliberately targeting civilians and has said it's conducting inquiries into footage that seems to be shows the i.d.f. killing civilians m.p.'s in this country routinely tell the british public the gaza
10:54 pm
is run by terrorist hands and you being to gaza how was your experience that when i've been to the west bank and they would allow me to go go to gaza. and i could tell you though even the horrific conditions. in the west bank indicates that the conditions in gaza are i have to be even more horrific. we have always said that if people had a chance to really experience life under occupation. people in the west that is. the support for the israeli state would evaporate in a moment it is absolutely incredible absolutely inhumane so the very fact that people live and they are in essence an open air concentration camp in gaza still living in the rubble from the last israeli attack in that strip of land and that now they are attempting to raise their issue to the attention of the international
10:55 pm
community by marching to the borders of that concentration camp i reminding the international public that you know they are under occupation that there is a land there that they still believe belongs to them because they were kicked off the land and then they are met with life. ammunition it is absolutely incredible that that kind of activity is allowed to to continue without massive international outcry but let me say this there is massive international outcry not as action unfortunately though we don't see it as intensely as it should be in the west. and of course iran has been bombing syria and there isn't anything to be a reproach moment in israel and saudi arabia which opposes yemen with british weapons how would you gotta drive your president's relationship to saudi arabia is consistent with the relationship of the previous administrations but basically the
10:56 pm
saudis. are part of the u.s. strategic. plan for maintaining control of have very important part of the world it is a state that provides billions of dollars to the u.s. arms industry and therefore. it gets the support from the administrations even when it is when that government is involved and a clear violation of international norms and standards. be it in bahrain are the current vicious war being waged any m. and they get of they get a pass but again this shows the they how paderewski of western opinion and the hypocrisy of policymakers both in the us and throughout the western european theater that this kind of relationship continues that the saudis and that don't find themselves in the dock in the hague with the other war criminals along with
10:57 pm
people like tony blair and george bush and run straight out and not rocket it demonstrates that the west a commitment to something called international law is a fraud so we say that own lives are in fact precious and that the law of the palestinians the lives of people in yemen are just as precious that the lives of people in syria and the lives of people on the in the the ghettos of detroit and the southside of chicago we say that basically what we see happening globally being actually. shooter by the western powers led by the us is just the flip side of the kind of repression that we see a domestic league in the us and that's why we have building in attempt to rebuild an antiwar movement in two minutes rest movement in the us to confront these contradictions and yet nato his military has failed to install proxies arguably
10:58 pm
from iraq to libya do you think though it may yet what in venezuela which will see presidential elections next month we have seen that these attempts to try to circumvent the will of the people who have not been successful they can in fact put in place repressive governments that can be installed in a place for a few years but it is things that the trend in the last thirty forty years has been a trend going toward. establishing more and more progressive governments that are committed to upholding the objective human rights of the people that they think they'll be success have been successful in venezuela that the world's number one oil superpower ocular no i don't but it's very it's a very dangerous situation because we don't believe i'm really concerned whether or not they're going to allow the election to take place and next month if that takes
10:59 pm
place the less it takes place the basically we're going to see the situation become more normalized in venezuela because the the opposition has to come to terms with the fact that you have a much newer government in place for six years a gem of iraq and thank you my pleasure. one rule did disgrace take you from cambridge on let's go play in the elections of a small caribbean island we also foreign minister of state gets an even smaller brantley about i.m.f. destabilization and then that you see a female and raul castro and tories of a gets question on their policy on the rates of the poor at pm give his goal the ball coming up about to i'm going underground.

way the system should work is that every stock bond security underwritten by wall street or any bank in america one percent should be carved out and put into salsa security so that americans whether they have a job as minimum wage workers or whether they're c.e.o.'s all across the spectrum everyone gets to participate in this thing called the american economy because if you don't always stocks are not part of the american economy. for a man or sitting in a car when the flips get shot in the head. all four different versions of what. one of them is on the death row there's no way you could have done it there's no possible way because the owners do not shoot around a corner. about
11:02 pm
your sudden passing i fondly just learned you were a south and taken your last term. here at the top to you as we all knew it would i tell you i'm sorry i believe i could so i write these last words in hopes to put to rest these things that i never got off my chest. i remember when we first met my life turned on each first. but then my feeling started change you talked about more like it was again still some are fond of you those that didn't like to question our arc and i secretly promised to never like it said one does not leave a funeral the same as one enters the mind it's consumed with death this was. a speech because there were no other takers. claimed that mainstream media has met its make.
11:03 pm
you go through street mankind has been cruel and destructive over and over again and some go our cities have come back and many are quite beautiful and wonderful places. if you look in the middle east in places like syria it's it's i agree with you it's totally depressed. and i wish they had the political issues involved with it could be resolved but i think until that is done there's very little hope that the cities will be able to turn the tide of. welcome back i made calls for the british prime minister's resignation who exactly was to blame for the deliberate destruction of landing cards of british people so as to allegedly deport them to the developing world dry as it may blame the blairites de facto now attacking jeremy corbin over anti semitism the to see. to
11:04 pm
destroy the minds and hearts was taken in two thousand and nine and as i seem to recall in two thousand and nine it was a labor home secretary who was a. clarification from number ten would later have to be issued for that and jeremy corbyn said the blame lay with your résumé doesn't the home office keep records it's been months since these cases were first brought to the government's attention we know of at least two british citizens languishing in detention centers in error and a small annoying the jamaican prime minister has said he knows of people who are unable to return to britain remember this is all while leaders of nations formally under imperial british rule the commonwealth of so-called stolen wealth are in london this is a shameful episode and the responsibility for it lies firmly as the prime minister's door pandering to bogus bogus immigration targets led to. it will lead to
11:05 pm
a hostile environment for people contributing to our country it will lead to british citizens being denied any chance treatment losing their jobs homes and pensions through engineered changes to centers like criminals and even deported title historical records straight in and ministers claiming officials corbin called it shameful may pay tribute to those who might be deported the interest generation did come here after the war they did help to build this country many of them worked in our public services they contributed they have they have zero right to be here not only that but as for korban i will not say you cannot play station of violence from a man who allows anti semitism to. after three or in corbin with anti semitism to resume was asked by the s.n.p. leader in westminster ian black about the tories i'm a rape cause for poor women affected by how men do. tree two child policy for poor
11:06 pm
people scott would have been clear paying benefits on proving trauma isn't a choice it is a disgrace and one which we will retry the women involved the chief of the british medical association in scotland that's it it is fundamentally damaging for women forcing them to disclose really been abuse at that time and in a manner not of their choosing even of financial penalty mr speaker this is the form with the box for the child's the what kind of society do we live in this type of society we live in a society where we have taken every care to ensure that this is. in as sensitive. as possible well after a week of dealing sensitively in london with around fifty two heads of state representing two point four billion people what has the commonwealth heads of government meeting actually been like one nation that took a lead on the tourism
11:07 pm
a deportation scandal with st kitts and nevis the smallest sovereign state in the western hemisphere which finally won independence from britain in the one nine hundred eighty s. joining me now is its foreign minister mark brantley who's also the premier of the caribbean island of me this foreign minister welcome to going on the ground so how did it feel to walk into a huge political storm here during the what was supposed to be this commonwealth governments of it when it all the thing to be coming down to the destruction of landing cards and to raise them is home secretary and prime minister deporting people to your region who are british but thank you for the invitation how does it feel i think that we are satisfied that's true attention from the media and through pressure from the caribbean led by a high commissions here in london that we've been able to get the attention of the british government and this to getting that attention i heard one colleague say that politicians for us this feel the heat and then this is the light. so i think
11:08 pm
that this was an example here and the timing of it coming as it does on the eve of the commonwealth heads meeting i think it was a distraction that the government here did not want at this particular time didn't want an absolutely haven't presumably prepared for it probably because you are quoted as saying tourism is best placed you are supporting it all through absolutely i think she is best placed i mean she certainly was the home secretary when some of these measures were introduced that have now led to this problem the british government said it was an unintended consequence but the reality is that lives have been destroyed people have been affected we have families that have been ruined the pot we have a situation where we have reports that people have actually been deported or denied entry haven't left the country this is a very very busy in the caribbean as a whole preserving an existing kids to live it so we had to jamaica and booklets being published by the government telling people how to cope with life in the caribbean you didn't have any people we didn't we didn't we we're told again by
11:09 pm
a high commission that he is now looking at a few cases but certainly this is a caribbean issue and so in having these conversations we are trying certainly to ensure that the government here on the stands of the caribbean is united on this particular issue so this is even going beyond just the mere question of an apology i think this is now a question of compensation for these people to try to see how if at all they can be made whole again wow and around that table with your fellow foreign ministers from all around the british they kind of share your view about oh i think that this view is a view that is is very closely held by colleagues of some that we're passionate about because that's been mine and i think you know your viewers must be in mind that when the when russia arrived here empire when we sort of arrived in one thousand forty eight in fact this year marks seventy is this was immediately after world war two when great britain our mother country who reached out to the curb. and
11:10 pm
said to its colonies and to its subjects who were then of course all of us were not yet independent and said you must now come come to england and help us rebuild in fact my own father came in one nine hundred fifty five so he was part of that generation and he used to regale us with these tales and said you know in the windows when they tried to get a flock to let to rent to do would say you know no irish no blacks no dogs but what about that region they left behind some might argue the same kids and nevis swapped the colonial masters of london for the colonial masters of washington d.c. in the i.m.f. what is the you are prime minister dougherty we have been doing meeting the i.m.f. certainly knows what is the telling you to do what we need to the i.m.f. quite regularly we are members of course of the i.m.f. we are contributors to that and we get advice and we get what record article for assessment so they come in from gives them the right to tell you what to do and
11:11 pm
govern well i don't know if it's you give them right i think they come in and they make suggestions or recommendations or look at the economy let's bear in mind there's a lot of us in the smaller countries we do have a scarcity sometimes of the technical skills and the technical expertise so they come in they have to be invited in and so it's not a question that they impose anything on us we decide of course whether or not we accept in fact we had a program on a stereotype program that the form of government incentives the u.s. had introduced in response to an out of control debt situation and they are not that the pill is any less bitter but they argue quite success was a home grown program rather than an i.m.f. imposed telling you and you were doing it to involve yourselves in a land for debt program basically privatizing was to save kids and live this well most work too well not most but clearly there's a price to pay and i think that the lesson of saying it's in the us is. there is
11:12 pm
a price to pay for profit spending for an approach to governance which is all about tax and spend and you get to a point where our debt ballooned now in fairness but it did not just balloon on the basis of profit spending there was some of that there was one to the wastage but it also ballooned because we've been hit by climatic conditions storms we have to rebuild because we are treated by international organizations as a middle income country we know and have access to overseas development assistance or concession we finance and so what that resulted in is that we were forced to go to the market to borrow often times of commercial rates for building infrastructure and so that naturally affected our debt position in the numbers the lenders yeah you talk about climatic conditions because there's one country in your region which famously under the castro. fidel castro and his brother not only the castro is in power it was cuba he said they owed their success to the fact they never did have
11:13 pm
an i.m.f. obligation to have cuban doctors come to your country to help in the wake of a testament to their medical system over yours well this is not so much odd because i think the cuban revolution has done one thing and it's shown the strength of human spirit cuba has been on the embargo blockade from the united states now for nigh fifty years the reality is that they have suffered as a people but through that suffer indeed build resilience and one of the areas that have excelled is medical care medical. care of all kinds so the truth is that cuba is not only because they have it with this they call it brigades that come out and have assisted countries not only in the caribbean but in africa and elsewhere in times of tragedy but they also have over the years train our own doctors so we have many of our own doctors from sink is in need so we trained in cuba and so it is part and parcel of that cooperation we have always supported cuba and cuba is reintroduction into the world we have all. is virtually every speech you make of
11:14 pm
the united nations we condemn the embargo which we think has a horrible effect on people and their standard of living and their lives and one must with all the other i'm sure things that one can say about cuba one must admire the resilience of the circumstance what sort of payback from washington do you think you get for those kinds of speeches because the european union finance ministers are just blacklisted your country is being an uncooperative jurisdiction for being in the panama papers you know what so late after the papers do you see that as a smearing of your country it is a smear and it was an unfortunate smear and because i think that we have been very responsive we were assessed two years ago by the global tax forum and given the rating of largely compliant the same rate in the united states of america gaap we have been very responsive legislation with the e.u. do this i think they did this because the e.u. required of us a commitment last year and in our commitment to this it at one particular commitment was too vague we didn't use the precise language of the e.u. wanted part of the problem with the e.u.
11:15 pm
and all the organizations you know the g seven the g twenty you name it they make rules for the rest of us but we're not at the table when those rules have been made so whenever there's a meeting you're sort of watching and waiting with bated breath to find out what new world order we're going to have after this that we have to comply with because there's a lot of fear in going on living with you think the cambridge analytical story was a smear against your government i mean this video footage of a opposition politician apparently being caught in a million dollars sting hurdle trouble is everything cambridge analytical is being complained about is based probably is where we have a smear against you i think it is a smear but of course is what we call dirty tricks in politics frankly i don't know if it was cambridge analytical but a similar effort was made in addition to me. as a picture of you with i think julian as a lawyer yes i did time i didn't even know that he represented julian saw he would write this yes we were having a conversation about
11:16 pm
a. operation sentence and it's in the it was that he wanted to set up so it was only afterwards of course that this connection became clear but that aside i feel that the whole issue of cambridge and live it was to expose sort of the most sordid side to the politics and the sort of mind bending techniques that people are now getting involved in trying to sway public opinion it's a who did offer this opposition. to millions of well there's a lot of finger pointing going on i have no evidence as to who might throw your government all i can say is it didn't it did not benefit him it didn't benefit our side of the island so one can presume that it was the other side that was involved with this and that would have been the form of government they were placed voted out in two thousand and fifteen so we're leaving the european union how far are you thinking about the alba economic union in that region obviously venezuela very much one of the big stories of that hemisphere from the old show the foreign affairs

that nato nations have destabilising is going to be where do you see alberta economic trading i think i think algos important i think there's some suggestions now do that arguably needs to be reformed but let us not forget that when oil prices were at the highest and our economies were on the knees and at the brink of extinction that menace whaler provided relief through alba through pressure they offered us the opportunity to continue to run our economies because clearly you need fuel in order to run your economy they offered us that opportunity terms that made it a little easier for us and to lower prices again got back to some semblance of respectability you know if you so the truth is that alba has for us certainly in its membership very useful purpose at that time because of the difficulties that we were experiencing and i was a fossil suggests that we're not for in the world not for picture or even that our economy is in the caribbean would have been in even worse shape than they. right no

international with me. today you're very welcome with us on the program this hour. now a mission from the global chemical weapons watchdog the o.p.c. w. has visited the syrian town of doomer to investigate an alleged chemical attack the team will send samples to elaborate tree in the netherlands as well as other labs the findings will be compiled in a report there p.c. w.'s considering another possible visit to duma the russian foreign ministry doe has expressed concerns over alleged attempts by the organization's experts to limit the number of visited sites and interviewed witnesses last week unconfirmed reports of the incident were used as a pretext by the u.s. u.k. and france to launch missiles against syria the u.n. special envoy for the country has said peace efforts have to be relaunched following the u.s. led assault we never expected it to be. in very

very good thing shal danger of. peace and security is this what happened last week. and it's not looked after now for cheap engineering group or the three countries the u.s. the u.k. and france have not only bombed imaginary chemical facilities in syria but also bombed the geneva peace process i mean while the u.n. security council's gathered for an informal meeting in a secluded farmhouse in southern sweden secretary general antonio again stressed there could be no military solution to the conflict he nonetheless admitted there was still a long way to go the remembers of the security council together on the issue. now although no solid verifiable evidence of chemical weapons being used has been put forward the assad government spin accused of gassing civilians even before the watchdog could begin its probe the u.s. u.k. and france launch strikes largely on the basis of social media reports.
11:23 pm
it is. they've already launched their attack based on the lack of evidence or you know there were there are allegations i'm a big concern o.p.c. w. have not spoken to all the witnesses apparently they have been there today in the taken samples which they are going to ship back to their laboratories across europe and maybe further afield. but the important the important point to make here is that the attacks were launched to the investigation even prior to the o.p.c. to the fact finding team arriving in the country. assembled in beirut on friday didn't actually get to syria all of them until saturday by which time the missiles

of cruise missiles a little be struck. and the west as described the missile strikes as a humanitarian intervention here's a slightly different angle from artie's police work. after allegations of a chemical attack syrians were immediately reassured because in case you missed it heavily armed westerners will play a role in the way with a humanitarian intervention. missiles from france britain and the us are like no other because they combine high tech killing power with good intention there are plenty of other countries involved in the syrian cluster but it's only the really nice ones doing it for humanitarian purposes and the anger saxons on the poles all traditionalist self or old when it comes to weapons they prefer the conventional kind they've tried the chemical was on the biological arms and used to be a lot wilder one world war two korea vietnam iraq one i'm drawn

of that fact japan had a skeptical reaction to the news with the japanese prime minister promising to keep a close watch moscow which has long been working for a diplomatic solution to the crisis pointed out that this is just the beginning of a long process and other powers will need to be ready to make concessions as well. we are glad to note that the situation on the peninsula is the other thing in a positive direction in line with the road proposed by russia and china for resolution of the korean issue through stages assume a mutual freeze on military activity in the region as well as setting up direct contacts between north korea the u.s. and south korea followed by multilateral talks aimed at a comprehensive resolution of issues on the korean peninsula including the nuclear issue the north longtime ally china stressed its continued role in the resolving the conflict while expressing hope that p.i. nyang will continue on the path to peace through dialogue with the international community which is something that planning vowed to make

a priority just the day before we saw direct phone links being installed between the north and south korean leaders as they prepare for their first summit since two thousand and seven and a much anticipated meeting between donald trump and kim jong un is also in the works trump tweeted that he is looking forward to that while praising the news of the program suspension meanwhile u.s. vice president mike pence so this progress could not have been achieved without trump and his strategy of maximum pressure however analysts we've heard from believe the latest breakthrough comes because of the work of many players in the region not trump stream of threats president has been threatening north korea all along and don't forget north korea. firing this testing missiles and and carrying out tests until felder. acquire the ability is to deliver a sort of devastating nuclear deterrence the united states even before president trump has given the cold shoulder to north korea and the north korean united states

moving in these in these things if you don't involve constantly involved in. the. u.s. government has admitted to helping the lebanese armed forces fight the islamic state however it's fear that some of the money and equipment is ending up in the hands of hezbollah which washington regards as a terror group issue was recently raised in congress and levanon hizbullah a terrorist organization you just towns to shield its balance of tens of thousands of illegal rockets violent extremist organizations like this or lebanese. is a menace lebanese hezbollah a terrorist organization official figures show that since thousand and six the u.s.
11:33 pm
has provided nearly one point seven billion dollars to help the lebanese army the security assistance funds were mainly used to provide equipment facilities and training after that disclosure a state department official said the u.s. keeps track of all equipment handed over it decreases the risk of hezbollah are using it however experts told us they're not convinced. to not only put money with the love of the storms were she to put u.s. security forces with the bad mistake on the united states perjurer made this decision because it is below basically used to trolling the entire lebanese armed forces and destroyed them just change her mind sure. there's. major terrorist groups reported by iran and of course the conflict between the united states and iran knows very great as well as a conflict between us ally israel and hezbollah in iraq that just doesn't make
11:34 pm
sense to me that we didn't do our own work correctly in the united states we don't want to support them we don't want to support the lebanese armed forces the us administration. quite bluntly. puts it as if it has only one objective in bill of on in the syrian lebanese and even jordanian area and death is the defeat of isis they do not care about all the rest of course they don't want the conflict aeration between israel and hezbollah but as long as they believe that the lebanese armed forces are helping them against isis. they would rather ignore all the rest for israel it could be helping. him directly and contributing to further bloodshed if a new round of fighting. starts the lebanese government of course takes

a different view on the things that president has praised has said it helped avoid civil war has been a fight as also join the country's army in islamic states operations and in the meantime a german play about hitler is being slammed for offering free tickets to those who wear swastikas we'll have more on that controversial story after this short break. thank.

a power grab. and of course led the country as president for more than eight years and had to step down through to a law on term limits now in his new role as prime minister he remains the country's most powerful politician due to constitutional changes over the past nine days thousands of opposition supporters have been blocking roads calling for new elections. over to the states now a group of texans are campaigning for independence from the u.s. there's even a new book that explores the practicality of all we spoke to its author daniel miller and also media commentator john griffin who both think the mentum is building for a so-called texas. if you you really want to drill down to why texas has had such an increase in support over the last decade it really boils down to one thing texans are sick and tired of being governed by one hundred eighty thousand pages of federal laws at the core texans believe that the best people to govern taxes are
11:38 pm
texans this idea that somehow this political and economic union called the united states of america can be fixed is a myth it is a fallacy what we have seen is in any attempt to repair or reform the federal union has been met with nothing but lip service and outright insult and outrage here in texas they proposed as a political support in texas for texas independence or at the minimum a vote on texas independence and right now even with the president donald trump in office we are still facing significant structural issues in the united states and texas independence needs to be on the table the texas classless movement was formed in two thousand and nine it now has more than three hundred fifty thousand supporters they want an independence referendum and i have a duction in texas to the federal government. according to polls more than half of

11:41 pm
just so i needed most of this because i think it is disrespectful and clearly beyond the limits you don't present a play dealing with that of hitler on hitler's birthday literally incite some people with far right views to come to the theatre i think that's wrong because it takes to make him a i would not do it like that i think it's very provocative i would have done something like that but we should not restrict freedom of speech or the arts now that i wouldn't say our star of david or a swastika just because someone tells you to. want to do that said kind of i think i can show so darity without a davis star and show compassion for to victims of the holocaust as for those who take a swastika i find that outrageous but generally i like the idea behind this performance in hackney bloodstock if i choose to wear a swastika which i think i will do my motive will be to see how people react. might come. local authorities have denied the play breeches

german laws which banned the display of nazi symbols the show sparks around among residents there were local action group was described the production as unacceptable and even called for a boycott place director says he only wanted to create an environment for debate. we need more awareness and we cannot miss with simple discussions but through action. to provoke a discussion and get people arguing and that's exactly the idea behind this production. time magazine has released its annual ranking of the top one hundred most influential people in the world one of the media like to portray is having plenty of global influence at least was missing from the list. russian influence afraid to say negative.

williams yes. as the missiles rained down on syria. anyway i'm not going to get into the details about the strike because i've already done that on a half dozen other videos in interviews that are up online and said i want to talk about all the things off by. covered up this week some of the good bombing serves as a great distraction from whatever the ruling elite don't want you to know about they use it like you like like throwing a blanket over where the dog just vomited on the couch hey you know now we can have company over again. you know it's it's basically like like a stain remover like stayed away you know you can't rid of all the nasty stuff stormy daniels giving too many interviews try some bum doing. their lawyers office getting raided to find out the details of all the hush money you paid various people through the years but. former f.b.i.

director james comey suddenly a darling of the mic resistance running around selling a book about how you're all. boy what a great time for some bombs away all right and right. you get the point but after i started writing this segment i noticed that the fake left wing was also pointing this out which is bizarre because they're part of the same old con alliance that has forced trump into bombing in the first place people like rachel maddow are running around like trouble after bobby after bob to prove he doesn't love assad he doesn't love putin and obama and then when he does it they go because the story did you oh yes in fact this gets a frantic idiotic argument brought rachel. to cheers. announcing new military strikes on syria.
11:50 pm
point of personal privilege if the president of the united states is believed to have issued the order to launch this strike tonight even in part because people think he wanted to distract from a catastrophic domestic scandal that is blowing up at home so people are going to say it's just because the boards are. charters our country is. over bobby and a few people for the right reason. like because we want to avoid all in power in a strong petrodollar and tell the stocks or the weapons industry we don't have to distract from ports to our rice fighting. each other throughout. the summer. over our work you know if you've been murdering just three.
11:51 pm
thank god we have rachel to defend the honor of organized human murder but in reality there's something rachel won't tell you there are other stories that this bombing covered up more important then stormy daniels and in a roundabout way rachel and the other neo con friendly corporate media or working with trump to cover those things up first off the same week from bombed syria there was growing international concern over the israeli massacre of the norm civilians that happened just days before israel also shot six journalists killing one and these were not you know top secret journalist taking notes on a secret spy pad no these were people with press written across their vests which means the israeli soldiers were aiming at journalists wow that sounds like something to me. stream media stooges would want to talk about you know you they
11:52 pm
are you guys i know we do and everything israel ever does but should we be upset when snipers take out fellow journalists. you know sounds like a good time for bombs. rachel maddow covered the recent massacre at all and if she did i doubt she did it with the same teary. inflection as she reserved for porn star scandalous. here's another major story covered up by our illegal bombing campaign trump has been talking about rejoining the trans-pacific partnership the same deal which dropping out of was perhaps the only good campaign promise that he kept well except for his promise to replace the oval office calif with a couch made entirely of what the pies that that was pretty awesome but yes trump has proposed rejoining the transition partnership in case you've forgotten the t.p.

is the largest take a corporate takeover that the world has ever known if a corporation in brunei i decided it didn't like the clean air regulations in say california it could take the us to a corporate run try butyl where they would go you have to let bruno i pollute a or so now you're a harken up brown it all over your baja fresh tacos because of bruno i and most of america will remain blissfully ignorant you know. i i've covered gallons of the yeah you're coming down with corporate rule mother. i feel bad. for her corporate. challenged airiness and that's how the p.p.p. is and there is something very basic everyone needs to understand about trade deals they're not about trade they're not going to train less than. third of what the
11:54 pm
t.p. says has to do with trade is designed to set rules to minimize the risk of democracy for corporations who are said to hate democracy all right they've made they day they hate democracy more than carty be hates when her money don't move. forbes will let you know america loses play not rejoining the t.v. the threat of trade the president trade wars have unintended results but few could have predicted how quickly grassroots politics in america would pressure the administration to reconsider its position on the t.v. big yeah magazine for ridge creative all farmers in nebraska are showing up at trump of events with signs that say they know their dot. you see this forbes writer is involved in the age old tradition of boom she. farmers may be upset if soybean prices suffer from the trade war drums creating but none of
11:55 pm
them are demanding the t.p. be in fact most of the t.v. big enough you know this doesn't have to do with trade as the wiki leaks file stated the t.p. is basically a corporation's charter assigning a variety of rights and powers to corporations in the name of free trade and that's why the t v p is a grave threat to freedom of information civil rights and access to healthcare but have no fear trump then reversed course again saying well japan and south korea would like us to go back into t.p. pay i don't like the deal for the united states. why is from perversity himself so much on this because he doesn't know what the p.p.s. are right and he hasn't. he hasn't he hasn't read the thing at all. ok in fact he doesn't even realize south korea is in part of the caveman.
11:56 pm
he has no idea what he's talking about but mark my words the american corporate state will continue to push to get into the t.p. this is not over so to sum it up we have a reactionary manchild president who pathologically lacked empathy he can fire missiles on other countries when ever he wants thereby getting our pathetic dumpster fire media to do nothing for the next three days but wave a flag and sing. for the well gee i guess the answer would be to take those crazy unconstitutional war powers away from him just like you wouldn't you would let us. just like you wouldn't want to taunt her play with electric saw ok it's very much the same. what if a static congress now wants to give trump more war powers yes tim kaine and bob
11:57 pm
corker claim the new a un that they presented to congress does limit trumps powers however most legal scholars including the a.c.l.u. have noted not only was the corker as you him out almost irretrievably cede to the executive branch the power to declare war but it also would give this president and all future presidents authority to engage in worldwide war so basically it would cause exactly what we have already have so basically the two party corporate con men have sorry con people have. given. dictators tool box to trump most of it created under bush and obama and there are no hurry to decrease it and guess what right will maddow and the rest of the war hungry corporate talking heads are in no hurry to cover the real stories because this board starts scared joe. charted our rescue.

come to watch the d.c. ghai. our all while call. and lead can analyse take the news from behind the breaking news there has been a chemical attack in america apparently took place in flint michigan they water there is filled with lead and sadly this chemical attack has been going on for years the government that it wait this just in there's been another chemical attack in the united states in fact it's all across the united

yes that's my bad you have anything else yeah yeah i think. this just in there's been an attack in the us and it's killing a hundred fifteen americans a day apparently the cause is opioids but luckily someone actually is standing up to try to punish the drug dealers behind these murders bernie sanders has put forward a bill that would send opioid exacts to jail the bill would threaten big pharma executives with that least ten years in prison should their companies be found guilty of contributing a. price. if you look at market marketing practices and it's about time we lock those mother. was locking them up would send a message to all the other criminals out there like you know bank robbers neck grow

sean hannity's sole it's ok that's impossible since he never had one but it makes sense they get money from the companies making the drugs keeping them alive you want to really is just one of fourteen companies that gave patient groups one hundred sixteen million dollars in two thousand and fifteen alone plus if it's another golden compass would have included them years ago in the position payment sunshine act a law that required payments to physicians from drug makers and devices to be registered on a public website but patient groups were not trusting the bill so this is more like an act of charity like voluntary at a soup kitchen or catherine zeta jones having such difficulty. she's doing the lord's work. as is the lord of the so there. is this or that they believe she was the vehicle because these are groups who spend

glad to have you with us a mission from the global chemical weapons watchdog the o.p.c. w has visited the syrian town of duma to investigate an alleged chemical attack now the team will send samples to a laboratory in the netherlands and their findings will be compiled in a report. is planning another possible trip to duma but the russian foreign ministry has expressed concerns that the number of sites visited by the team and the interviews conducted with eyewitnesses may have been insufficient of a chemical incident in domo supposedly happened on april the seventh and will lead to missile strikes by the u.s. the u.k. and france the u.n. special envoy for syria has said peace efforts have to be relaunched following the u.s. led salt. we never expected this to be. in very very potential danger of. peace and security is this what happened last week

it's not helped us time now for cheap in geneva two by the three countries the u.s. the u.k. and france have not only imagine we can recall facilities in syria but also bombed the geneva peace process meanwhile the un security council has gathered for an informal meeting at a farmhouse in southern sweden secretary general antonio again stressed that there could be no military solution to the conflict with government has been accused of gassing civilians although no solid evidence has been put forward and even before the watchdog could started to probe the u.s. u.k. and france launched air strikes largely on the basis of social media reports.
12:23 am
they've already launched their attack placed on the lack of evidence or you know there are there are allegations i'm a big concern the o.p.c. w. have not spoken to all the witnesses apparently they have been there today and they're taken samples which they're going to ship back to their their laboratories across europe and i'm a bit further afield. but the important the important point to make here is that the attacks were launched to the investigation even prior to the o.p.c. to the fact finding team arriving in the country and. assembled in beirut on friday didn't actually get to syria all of them until saturday by which time the missiles of cruise missiles a little destruct. the west has called the missile strikes a humanitarian intervention but here's a different take from party's political. after allegations of a chemical attack syrians were immediately reassured because in case you missed it

heavily armed westerners will play a role never way with a humanitarian intervention. missiles from france britain and the us are like no other because they combine high tech killing power with good intention there are plenty of other countries involved in the syrian cluster but it's only the really nice ones doing it for humanitarian purposes the angry saxons and the poles all traditionalist self rolled when it comes to weapons but they prefer the conventional kind they've tried the chemical was on the biological arms and you pay a lot since world war one world war two korea vietnam iraq one on their own too so when they tell you they really rather you didn't use them they are all tools even from experience there's a message to just put some terrorists in six inventions and weapons on the possible by the from western homs deal is because that way you can fire them safely from the

i am air stars or this is the kaiser report. oh so sick max in the second half you have mitch firesign who has lots of charts but in the first half we have lots of data you know the empire state manufacturing survey came out and it looks like for the next six months looking into the future many factors in new york are not so optimistic but actually the i.m.f. who is also meeting in washington d.c. well there they've revised their forecast to look more optimistic for u.s. growth they've increased the u.s. growth rate for twenty eighteen by point two percent so they're saying everything's looking good through twenty twenty through the next elections but we're going to get to that in the next episode this episode i want to focus on the tax cuts so who's right the empire meant state manufacturing survey or they i.m.f. well wage growth well short of what was promised from tax reform the latest
12:48 am
employment situation report from the bureau of labor statistics shows weekly employee earnings have grown seventy five dollars since tax reform passed well short of the four thousand to nine thousand dollars annual increases projected by president and house speaker paul ryan so the tax passage basically americans have seen on average six dollars and twenty one cents increase in their weekly earnings which obviously falls it's like three hundred twenty three dollars a year they had promised forty six thousand nine thousand dollars that was also good now they know it's all about optics sounds good but you know there's a lot of gatekeepers and intermediaries and those generally are the big corporations that will always glob the majority of possibile gains by anyone at any time that's right and we'll actually get into that so in a in the next headline about how basically all the tax cuts indeed did inject well
12:49 am
over a trillion dollars and they cost over a trillion dollars most of it is gone to the top but back to the bottom we're assuming a full fifty two weeks of work the six dollars and twenty one cent. increase in weekly earnings would result in a three hundred twenty three dollar annual increase nowhere near the minimum four thousand dollars promise and a nine thousand dollars potentially annual increases projected by president chum and speaker ryan a significant cuts were made to corporate tax rates whether it out that's going to lead to anything we don't know but there were those thousand dollar bonuses that doesn't count those things that happened from the likes of wal-mart gave a thousand dollars to every employee american airlines delta airlines all these airlines gave a thousand dollars to employees so this doesn't count that as well yeah to me it's a weekend beer you know party but other than that it's meaningless and i've said all was now for many years that the way the system should work is that every stock bond security underwritten by wall street or any bank in america one percent should
12:50 am
be carved out and put into social security so that americans whether they have a job as minimum wage workers or whether they're c.e.o.'s all across the spectrum everyone gets to participate in this thing called the american economy because if you don't own stocks you're not part of the american economy that's true most of it is owned by the top ten percent but let's go into one of the specific so you know there were a lot of headlines that were captured in the first few weeks of the year and that was that you know thousand dollar bonuses that was the big number right so let's just show how paltry that actually was compared to the savings that these companies had so they talk about navvy and they announced that it would be giving a thousand dollar bonuses to ninety eight percent of its six thousand seven hundred employees paying out nearly seven million dollars in bonuses while that may seem generous it pales in comparison to naveen potential tax savings using navea its two
12:51 am
thousand and sixteen net income is twenty sixteen effective tax rate estimated annual tax savings of nearly two hundred million dollars and it it's announced bonuses week out. late that announced bonuses represent less than four percent of naveen its potential tax savings so we give them you know hundred million and they get four million away and i was in my teen years to do magic in times square and to watch the three card monte guys very carefully and the tourists would come in and they'd lose thousands of dollars but it's very important when you're doing three card monte in times square to avoid having a tourist beat you up to let them win once you know particularly at the end so they may lose five thousand bucks but if they win twenty bucks at the end in their minds they're thinking see i'm a winner i'm a winner i beat the guy same thing in this instance they take millions and billions of dollars worth of fraudulent tax engineering but they give you one thousand
12:52 am
dollars and in your mind you're saying see i'm a winner on the big winner at the table and it's sad that they use such base psychological tricks to fool millions of americans into thinking that they're not getting completely wrecked over the coals but it does work well it's also not a thousand dollars to most americans remember we know that something like sixty five percent have less than four hundred dollars in savings for an emergency well you know if on a relative basis that might be a lot of money but the fact that the likes of nabby and her collecting ninety six percent of a bonus and only four percent go to the bottom ninety eight percent of their employees well that's the income gap and that wealth gap and america that's the problem not necessarily how much money you know when you when you talk about all the billionaire that that wealth and income gap people say well the poorest americans are doing better than the poor you know the richest africans in somalia or something like that so i think it's well within the society and that's the
12:53 am
that's the problem i think in the long term for economic growth is that income gap but in terms of just how much of those tax cuts over chile. in dollars and tax cuts are going to the top well tax cut savings float to company stockholders trickle to hourly workers and the first three months of twenty eighteen investors received one hundred nine point two billion dollars in dividends more than eight percent from the one hundred point nine billion received in the same period a year earlier according to s.m.p. dow jones indices in fact the s. and p. five hundred quarterly dividend payments set a new record and on top of that j.p. morgan has come out with an estimate of what the share buybacks this year will be and that will be a new all time high which is eight hundred billion dollars eight hundred billion dollars and share buybacks about
12:54 am
a trillion dollars in tax cuts financial part whether it's the way interest rates are structured to penalize the poor or a why their dividends are structured to enrich the coptic rat its financial apartheid we live in an apartheid state here in america engineered by wall street so eight hundred billion dollars a share buybacks this year five hundred twenty seven billion was the number last year this also by the way you know reduces the amount of shares outstanding that the public can own so it's taking more and more stock off the stock markets by the way were also your pension funds have to invest so there's less and less available for anybody to participate in the public stock of this the stock market's being taken. with the help of artificially cheap interest rates and after this capitalist failure comes feudalism and on top of that by the way they're also they're not just
12:55 am
buying their shares back with cash they're buying back with debt and part of that is tax shenanigans like apple has hundreds of billions of dollars overseas but the only way to get a. back without being taxed on it is to issue debt here and buy share backs they want to alternately go it goes from bank a bank bait a bank say to a bank data foreign bank the bank bank you all where the federal reserve bank how did they get multi trillion dollars of debt oh is it financial engineering and financial part time who will bail out the federal reserve bank oh it'll be a bill in that's right all of your savings will be given to the new federal reserve chairman because otherwise there would be a humanitarian crisis we need to avoid any humanitarian crisis so another story to put into this context of workers hourly wages not increasing and i'm not seeing any benefit to the tax cuts but the tax cuts will add to the deficit and the

medicare payments actually are are not counted now but the debts the they actually cost now but the debts are written they create debt which doesn't isn't paid off and. a couple decades from now so they pretend it didn't happen this year all right they say that the federal debt is twenty twenty one twenty two trillion dollars but if you account for the total debt picture it's sixty seventy eighty trillion dollars to donald trump i have this message mr president tear down that wall that wall being the interest rate apartheid wall i think you are saying that well a debt that will get you know just the internal financial apartheid state first and then go address these other problems in mexico and syria and all the others foreign adventures that the founders warned us against so the warning comes here from sheila weinberg and she's the c.e.o. of truth in accounting government budgeting works on

a cash basis she says that enables them to leave many of their expenses and liabilities off the books so they calculate her group calculates that the federal government's unrecorded social security medicare and other debts have increased by four point seven trillion dollars a year on average for the past decade that's on top of the unfunded liabilities and then there's the national debt and then this the national deficit so right now they're saying the deficit that our budget shortfall per year is four point seven trillion but in fact they're saying this truth and accounting is saying that actually it's closer to nine trillion a year that we're spending which is almost like what our g.d.p. is thirteen trillion ok so to be clear this is talking about the deficit yet not the debt the debt which includes unfunded liabilities that i made reference to is many more chileans of dollars then we are led to believe yes this is attacking the deficit which you're saying the deficit is many more chilling of dollars more than we're being told the deficit is your annual budget how would you go over your
12:59 am
annual budget at the end of the year if the year has ended and a new year starts so you put the four point seven trillion or that in this case nine chile on top of the debt. the national debt so that goes back on to that pile that keeps on going higher and higher in terms of the unfunded liabilities and total the national debt what they say is that is one hundred to one trillion at september twenty seven teen less fifty four point two trillion when calculated on the same basis at the end of twenty seven so the debt the deficit is rising the debt national debt is rising rising rising right and a candle in other and the payment of the even of these low rates is hundreds of billions of dollars in escalating incredibly anyway we gotta go to a break don't go away stay right there.

about your sudden passing i've only just learnt you worry yourself and taken your last wrong turn. up to you as we all knew it would i tell you i'm sorry suddenly i could so i write these last words in hopes to put to rest these things that i never got off my chest. i remember when we first met my life turned on each day. but then my feelings started to change you talked about war like it was again still some more fond of you those that didn't like to question our arc and i secretly promised to never be like it said one does not leave a funeral the same as one enters the mind it's consumed with death this one quite different person to speak to now because there were no other takers. to claim that mainstream media has met its maker.
1:03 am
welcome back to the guy as a reporter i'm ask either time now to turn to mitch fire stein he's the author of the internationally acclaimed planet ponzi now available in. various languages mitch welcome back hey great to be here why did you bring your pen around this time this one the one that breaks you know that's a very expensive pen and how many of these of my broken so far michel lives it's so tough to come on this show i think thinks that it's great you know credit month blankies fantastic show the people your shoelaces. before the end of the show them that let's go to the summit interesting topics that are most forest on the federal reserve balance sheet. you know because this explains everything you are the man of the charts you really you brought some charts what's happening we've got some charts today yes the first one we're to look
1:04 am
at is if the federal reserve's five trillion nearly five trillion dollar balance sheet this explains how we've got the most grotesque asset bubbles in history so the fed just keep printing money and that's why markets keep levitating and we've seen the most grotesque ball was in bonds stocks property and credit markets that you know in history around the world and the other central banks like the bank of japan european central bank and the bank of england have jumped on the money printing bandwagon to jump in for a second because you talk about asset bubbles but it also leads to mal investment because there's no accountability if some industries know that every mistake is met with more free money and thinking about the military and the defense contractors who do very well by just bombing people with no accountability then i go to congress then i go to parliament they don't ask to bomb people they just bomb people because they know that there's no end to the money there's no accountability and there and at the central banks in a large way is that a fair statement you know well i mean look at some of the military industrial complex characters like boeing and lockheed martin there are. couple of them that
1:05 am
are almost two thousand percent since the war on terror but the war on what is the war on terror really it seems to more like it's a war on democracy and look i mentioned this on the show a long time ago first what you have is a currency war which we had nine eight or nine years ago we're still seeing currency wars currency wars lead to trade wars and trade wars lead ultimately to hot wars now the war on democracy i mean this is propaganda squared i mean you can't believe anything that's in the traditional media anymore c.n.n. for example you know own c.n.n. turkey which is a propaganda network c.n.n. america's not much better in terms of propaganda but we never say the u.k. the u.k. think about the propaganda b.b.c. and think about what to reason may and boris the liar johnson have done to bring a war into syria and the events in cells barry where they said oh the russians did
1:06 am
it after five hours and then of course assad bombed people you don't need evidence anymore to start a war they don't go to parliament they don't need the people who say it's ok if they want war war it is in the military duster a complex makes money and we lose the taxpayers lose ok and to keep this in the frame of the kind of my perspective that i'm trying to put across here is that a lot of it can be accounted for by having an economy that has no accountability and that not accountability and mound usman that goes back to the central bank because there's a natural bank is not healing to any known standards of accounting that would require for example tying at tying what they did with gold for example as they have done in the past they simply print with reckless abandon there's a new guy in charge or own powell at the fed took over for janet yellen what's the story with him now well i mean he is janet yellen except you know he's just wearing a different mask so he's the bernanke yellow and they've just shifted the baton let
1:07 am
me just i guess. jump in we're talking about central banks now russia you mentioned russia they have a central bank from elvira is a first time i remember a last name i love the first time how would you contrast these two central bankers because a lot of people like james records for example says that there's such a bank to leave the russian central bank is the best the world why does he say that well i think you know if you look at the economies you can't compare the united states economy to russia's economy and you know you have to identify you have to analyze and identify what are you know the global threats and what are not global threats and if you look at what's the economy in russia it's under two trillion dollars in real terms united states economies around seventeen trillion to one thousand trillion depending upon what numbers you look at it's miniscule but the united states has debt to the magnitude of around two hundred fifty trillion dollars when you include all the social welfare and total net programs like social
1:08 am
security medicare was the palmetto you have america it's negative what's the book value of bankrupt what's the book value of russia there's no there's no real debt that's a positive to russia as a positive book value america as a negative book is value what i'm getting at there's not really a lot of debt which is really significant in the in the global scheme of things so if you disrupt the global narrative which is what we have going on right now globalism is a big narrative if you look at what happened you know going back digressing a bit to the central banks of the central banks supporting the zombie institutions with low interest rates so you've got a bunch of companies that should have gone bankrupt tesla is a perfect example that lives off of government sector subsidies and the fat of the land if you didn't have a zero percent interest rates in the european central bank meddling in the corporate bond markets and the swiss national bank buying equities you wouldn't have support like this but then you've got you've got other you know narratives in the background that are running to try to run globalism have the military
1:09 am
industrial complex and the characters of the deep sea. they are pushing propaganda out to everybody who will believe it is all about the dams in the system you know you put up a dam it cross a river and the water goes over that dam and it produces hydroelectric power. the reason i mention that is by way of analogy to get to my next point and chart which is money velocity here's a dam in the works of finance that's not producing any energy is producing kind of like constipation in many ways my evil us of a we've talked about it before it's still trending lower despite all of this money printing walk us through it right well this is this is this illustrates that we're in an environment where eventually we'll have hyperinflation and it will not be controllable by the central banks who think they know everything and this is going to catch a lot of people off but look you can never pick as i've said before at the top of a bubble but i can tell you we're definitely in a ball war right now and in every market if you look at the chart on the velocity
1:10 am
of money you'll see that it's crashed to low levels not even seen in one nine hundred fifty nine yet the governments keep telling us that we're in economic recovery so it's a fake economic recovery the narrative is a total lie and most of the people watching the show will realize that things haven't gotten better economically and there is lots of asset inflation so if you take for example the prices of tuition up two thousand percent from the one nine hundred eighty s. but your real wages when you inflation adjuster stagnant so how do you explain that risk or the circle ok let's say the small to medium enterprises that are the lifeblood of any economy they can't get loans from banks but if i walk and see a big money center bank that's getting his money from the central bank and i need a billion or two billion to buy a multi-billion dollar property on central park south they'll say sure they'll give it to me well because in other words it's crony capitalism writ large and what we
1:11 am
have here is a situation where the money is now. flowing to the economy to support small to medium enterprises because the banks simply don't want to take any risk whatsoever they hoard the money they participate themselves in these loans as merchant banks you know they've all become merchant banks they're all becoming equity holders in the money that they're lending you know out to capitalize on the inflation of the assets that they hold in their own balance sheets which then pump the stock prices higher which pumps the option prices higher which pumps the compensation for guys like jamie dimon lloyd blankfein higher so they by putting attorney get on the economy by stopping the economic flow by dropping money. velocity does their oh they have inflated their net worth of in and historic way right they have but i mean what's worse with that problem and what the government should be doing is they shouldn't be playing paying banks interest the federal reserve shouldn't be paying excessive reserve interest and they should receive retool that entire corrupt
1:12 am
system where the banks make money by holding excess reserves that are from money printing so and to get it to be clear that not only is the banks cost of borrowing zero exactly it's. creative pay to borrow money for the banks borrow money from the central bank and then they put it on deposit at the central bank so the more they borrow them or they make so there were the risk reward and the whole idea of capitalism of taking a rest for we were is inverted here you're saying that the more risk we take the more. reward we may without any penalty whatsoever well if you look at look we had we did a program with gregg's it for example when they had regs that you remember what the fear mongers were saying theresa may was one of them saying it would be the end of the world markets would crash sterling would go to zero look sterling is right back at one forty four where we were when bragg's it began yet the stock market's twenty
1:13 am
percent higher and today it was announced in the u.k. that they had record low unemployment not seen since since one thousand nine hundred seventy one so can you believe is that credible is any of it credible absolutely not so you know that the situation the production situation hasn't improved that house house prices have skyrocketed there and to bubble territory everywhere in real wages haven't gone up so what's happened the banks lend money as you said to real estate property developers at ridiculous low rates but they take a piece of the action and as these apartments get build built three years later down the road they're not going to sell any of them and these special purpose of vehicles are they developed are all going to go bust but this time there's going to be no will to bell them out and that's going to happen in the united states as well as in the. united kingdom right the real wages as you say are not live whatsoever so if you get to a gig economy job and you're delivering a bicycle full of food at a minimum wage and you're out there and dodging traffic for it before you get it and end up in the n.h.s.
1:14 am
i mean they count that as job a job growth however when you add back all the variables into this equation you end up with the average wages that dating are depreciating but the numbers on the top line are being showcased as being proof of recovery and yet there is no proof of recovery ok so let's talk about the shiller national home price index tell us about that what's going on you've got a chart right we've got a chart here that explains house prices from one thousand nine hundred seven to two thousand and eighteen and basically we leave if you look at the increase in prices you know ben bernanke he said that subprime was not a problem don't worry it's all under control and then you saw prices i guess two thousand and six start to peak out and then dropped down quite a bit all right i want to jump in because i want to cover to think rental prices in new york city are tumbling what's your quick take on that well i mean there's too much supply not enough demand and high paying jobs of course they're going to keep keep collapsing as i've said to try continuing to down thirteen percent writing
1:15 am
yeah i think i think real estate prices property values can drop up to eighty percent or even what eighty percent really tokyo only one hundred that's exactly right that's like good minutes prices and all right let's move on to thirty seconds gold gold gold is the only chart that we have that is not an asset bubble and prices are realistic on gold and will keep going higher so physical gold is really a place that everybody should look to hide out ok well you heard it here first eighty percent drop in property prices a tokyo asked collapse in manhattan is coming and author of plan a ponzi the internationally acclaimed tone that is translated into over two languages and that's going to do it for this edition of. come on this show should take you let us go to this ship leave the ship and look let us look at this this is where your money manager famous in new york that's the kind of show you where ok keep that money. you can find us on twitter a cause

1:21 am
a mission from the global chemical weapons watchdog the o.p.c. w has visited the syrian town of dumont to investigate an alleged chemical attack the team will send the samples to a laboratory in the netherlands and their findings will be compiled in a report the o.p.c. w. is planning another possible trip to duma but the russian foreign ministry has expressed concerns that the number of sites visited by the team and the interviews conducted with eyewitnesses may have been insufficient of a chemical incident and do most supposedly happened on april the seventh and led to missile strikes by of u.s. and the u.k. and france the u.n. special envoy for syria has said peace efforts have to be relaunched following the u.s. led assault. we never expected to be. very very quick to. do peace and security this is what this happened last week. it's not helped. in geneva. by the three countries the u.s. the u.k.
1:22 am
and france have not only imagine we can recall facilities in syria but also the geneva cleese process and meanwhile the un security council has gathered for an informal meeting at a farmhouse in southern sweden secretary general antonio. again stressed that there could be no military solution to the conflict. i mean assad government has been accused of gassing civilians although no solid evidence has been put forward and even before the watchdog could start its probe the u.s. u.k. and france launched airstrikes largely on the basis of social media reports.
1:23 am
they've already launched their attacks based on the lack of evidence or you know there were there are allegations i'm a big concern the o.p.c. w have not spoken to all the witnesses apparently they have been there today in the taken samples which they are going to ship back to their laboratories across europe and maybe further afield. but the important the important point to make here is that the attacks were launched to the investigation even prior to the o.p.c. to the fact finding team arriving in the country they were assembled in beirut on friday didn't actually get to syria all of them until saturday by which time the missiles of cruise missiles a lot he struck. the west has called the missile strikes as a humanitarian intervention but there's a different take from politics. after allegations of a chemical attack syrians were immediately reassured because in case you missed it heavily armed westerners will plays bolero way with
1:24 am
a humanitarian intervention the. missiles from france britain and the us are like no other because they combine high tech killing power with good intention there are plenty of other countries involved in the syrian cluster but it's only the really nice ones doing it for humanitarian purposes the anger saxons on the poles all traditionalist self or old when it comes to weapons they think the conventional kind they've tried the chemical was on the biological arms and you pay a lot of well who won world war two korea vietnam iraq one on their own too so when they tell you they'd really rather you didn't use them they are all tools you can from experience say the message to death put some terrorists in six inventions and weapons and money possible buying it from western homs deal is because that way you can fire them safely from the moral high ground these three
1:25 am
amigos dump them friday for a into syria i think humanitarian intervention they need via millions of dollars worth of humanitarian aid into the country storm shadow missiles humanely into eating out and million bucks apiece while every total cruise missile represents a one off a million dollar aid package only premier thanks and getting help to the people who really need to look to the syria mission really achieve apart from going up a few empty buildings where everyone has been told to take them myself anyway for leaders under the carpet in washington london and paris this kind of p.r. is the ball subject a striking a lesson into an area makes for a much better headlines that storm. gregg's. right now is getting a release thing of their. mission as.

we are glad to note that the situation on the peninsula is developing in a positive direction in line with the road proposed by russia and china for a resolution of the korean issue the first stages assume a mutual freeze on military activity in the region as well as setting up direct contacts between north korea the u.s. and south korea followed by multilateral talks aimed at a comprehensive resolution of all issues on the korean peninsula including the nuclear issue the north longtime ally china stressed its continued role in the resolving the conflict while expressing hope that p.i. nyang will continue on the path to peace through dialogue with the international community which is something that planning vowed to make a priority just the day before we saw direct phone links being installed between the north and south korean leaders as they prepare for their first comment since two thousand and seven and a much anticipated meeting between donald trump and kim jong un is also in the works trump tweeted that he is looking forward to that while praising the news of the program suspension meanwhile u.s. vice president mike pence so this progress could not have been achieved without

the way the system should work is that every stock bond security underwritten by wall street or any bank in america one percent should be carved out and put into social security so that americans whether they have jobs as minimum wage workers or whether they're c.e.o.'s all across the spectrum everyone gets to participate in this thing called the american economy because if you don't own stocks are not part of the american economy. will go up twenty eighteen coverage we've signed one of the greatest goalkeepers of all children but that was one more question and by the way who's going to be our coach. you guys i know you on the list is a huge star a month and a huge amount of pressure to come out you have to go meet the center of the shuttle with you and we will show you all the great. you are the rock at the back nobody

to the. international inspectors arrive at the site of an alleged chemical weapons attack in syria amid concerns from russia that the scope of the investigation is too low. north korea halts all nuclear and missile tests ahead of a meeting between kim jong il and donald trump. and the u.s. admits to funding and arming the lebanese military despite warnings that weapons could end up in the hands of hezbollah fighters. are broadcasting live director of syria's moscow this is our international thomas certainly glad to have you with us now a mission from the global chemical weapons watchdog the o.p.c.
2:21 am
w has visited the syrian town of do much to investigate an alleged chemical attack the team will send samples to a laboratory in the netherlands and their findings will be compiled in a report on the o.p.c. w. is planning another possible trip to dumas but the russian foreign ministry has expressed concerns that the number of sites visited by the team and the interviews conducted with eyewitnesses may have been sufficient chemical incident until more supposedly happened on april the seventh and led to missile strikes by the u.s. the u.k. and france the u.n. special envoy for syria has said peace efforts have to be relaunched following the u.s. led assault we never expected this to be. very very potential danger of. peace and security this is what this happened last week. it's not looked. cheap in geneva. three countries the u.s. the u.k.

have not only. chemical facilities in syria but also the geneva peace process. well meanwhile the u.n. security council has gathered for an informal meeting at a farmhouse in southern sweden secretary general antonio gutierrez again stressed that there could be no military solution to the conflict. i mean assad government has been accused of gassing civilians although no solid evidence has been put forward and even before the watchdog could start its probe the u.s. u.k. and france launched airstrikes largely on the basis of social media reports.
2:23 am
they've already launched their attacks based on the lack of evidence or you know there were there are allegations i'm a big concern o.p.c. w have not spoken to all the witnesses apparently they have been there today in the taken samples which they are going to ship back to their laboratories across europe and maybe further afield. but the important point to make here is that the attacks were launched to the investigation even prior to the o.p.c. to the fact finding team arriving in the country. assembled in beirut on friday didn't actually get to syria all of them until saturday by which time the missiles of cruise missiles a little be struck. or the west has called the missile strikes a humanitarian intervention but here is a different take from public way. after allegations of a chemical attack syrians were immediately reassured because in case you missed it heavily armed westerners will play a role in that way with a humanitarian intervention as. missiles from france
2:24 am
britain and the us are like no other because they combine high tech killing power with good intention there are plenty of other countries involved in the syrian cluster but it's only the really nice ones doing it for humanitarian purposes the under saxons and the poles all traditionalist self to roll when it comes to weapons they prefer the conventional kind they've tried the chemical was on the biological arms and used to be a lot and well who won world war two korea vietnam iraq won on their own too so when they tell you they'd really rather you didn't use them they are all fools even from experience say the message to just put some terrorists is to be a bunch of weapons on the possible buying it from western homs deal is because that way you can fire them to safety from the moral high ground these three amigos
2:25 am
dubbed them friday for a into syria i think humanitarian intervention they need to buy it millions of dollars worth of humanitarian aid into the country storms out a good humanely into eating out and million bucks apiece while every poll christmas sell represents a one off a million dollar aid package all the extraneous mission and getting help to the people who really need to look to the syria mission really achieve apart from going up a few empty buildings where everyone has been told to take them myself anyway releases under the carpet in washington london and paris this kind of p.r. is the ball such a case striking a lesson into an area makes for a much better headline home than storm. and there is your page that is getting at least.

we are glad to note that the situation on the peninsula is the other thing in a positive direction in line with the road proposed by russia and china for a resolution of the korean issue the first stages assume a mutual freeze on military activity in the region as well as setting up direct contacts between north korea the u.s. and south korea followed by multilateral talks aimed at a comprehensive resolution of issues on the korean peninsula including the nuclear issue the north longtime ally china stressed its continued role in the resolving the conflict while expressing hope that we'll continue on the path to peace through dialogue with the international community which is something that p.r. vowed to make a priority just the day before we saw direct phone links being installed between the north and south korean leaders as they prepare for their first summit since two thousand and seven and a much anticipated meeting between donald trump and kim jong un is also in the works trump tweeted that he is looking forward to that while praising the news of the program suspension meanwhile u.s. vice president mike pence so this progress could not have been achieved without

a mission from the global chemical weapons watchdog the o.p.c. w. has visited the syrian town of to investigate. an alleged chemical attack and the team will send samples to a laboratory in the netherlands and their findings will be compiled in a report the o.p.c. w. is planning another possible trip to dumont but the russian foreign ministry has expressed concerns that the number of sites visited by the team and the interviews conducted with eyewitnesses may have been sufficient now the chemical incident in domo supposedly happened on april the seventh and related to missile strikes by the u.s. the u.k. and france now the u.n. special envoy for syria has said peace efforts have to be relaunched following u.s. led assault we never expected it to be. in very very potential danger of. peace and security. what that happened last

they've already launched their attack based on the lack of evidence or you know they were there allegations are i'm a big concern o.p.c. w. have not spoken to all the witnesses apparently they have been there today in the taken samples which they are going to ship back to the laboratories across europe and maybe further afield. but the important the important point to make here is that the attacks were launched to the investigation even prior to the o.p.c. to the fact finding team arriving in the country. assembled in beirut on friday didn't actually get to syria all of them until saturday by which time the missiles of cruise missiles into the struck west has called the missile strikes a humanitarian intervention but here is a different take from artie's public. after allegations of a chemical attack syrians were immediately reassured because in case you missed it heavily armed westerners will play a role in that way with

a humanitarian intervention as. missiles from france britain and the us are like no other because they combine high tech killing power with good intention there are plenty of other countries involved in the syrian cluster but it's only the really nice ones doing it for humanitarian purposes the angry saxons and the poles all traditionalist self to roll when it comes to weapons they prefer the conventional kind they've tried the chemical was on the biological arms and you pay a lot of it in. world war two korea vietnam iraq one on their own tears so when they tell you they'd really rather you didn't use them they are all tools the people from experience say the message to death put some terrorists in six inventions and weapons on the possible advice from western homs deal is because that way you can fire them safely from the moral high ground these three amigos
3:25 am
dump them friday for a into syria i think humanitarian intervention they need to buy it millions of dollars worth of humanitarian aid into the country storm shadow missiles humanely into eating out and million bucks apiece while every total cruise missile represents a one off a million dollar aid package old extremely efficient in getting help to the people who really need to look to the syria mission really achieve a ball from going up a few empty buildings where everyone has been told to take them myself anyway for leaders under the carpet in washington london and paris this kind of p.r. is the ball such a case try taking a lesson into area makes for a much better headline than story. greg that. is getting a release thing of their. mission in.

none of welcome to the part of much of the twentieth century of rising levels of organization it came hand in hand with rising incomes moving to a big city more often than not than a ticket to a better life that still holds true but everywhere the majority of people leaving for big cities in the global south particularly in africa may actually see their fortunes more sun rather than improved is a turning from a blessing intercourse well to discuss that i'm now i'm joined by robert buckley senior fellow in international affairs at the new school in new york mr barclay it's a pleasure talking to you thank you very much for your time thank you now almost every country in the world. it's a version of the breakfast at tiffany's movie about a young man or young women moving into a big city attracted by its opportunities but i understand it from your writing that it is a rather mythologized perception of what are been a station is like more and more people are moving to bigger cities not because they
3:48 am
want to not because they're attracted by big life but because they have no choice is that right that's right you know let me qualify that. the general phenomenon or how it started of is that indeed cities grow more rapidly and urbanization happens as incomes increase and so in some countries in particular in sub-saharan africa we've witnessed a settlement in which people move to cities because the conditions in the countryside are to their conflict or drought and so they're moving to cities in a situation where their income is an increasing but that doesn't mean their situation isn't improving relative to where they were they were in dire straits in the countryside and came to the city so urbanization is not correlated with increases in income but it doesn't mean that it's causing their situation to cure i heard you say that many cities are now. prepared for the kind of and the flocks of
3:49 am
new residents and their planning. making planning changes only after the occupants have arrived rather than before as was the case with let's say new york or barcelona in the nineteenth century. and that in your view leads to the proliferation of slums i wonder if you consider slums a kind of c.d.'s in the in the broad sense of the world i think the sense of. kind of the mythologies of how urbanization fits into an economy was generally the notion that as urbanization increases societies become richer. and that people coming to cities would often come particularly poor people and say in a slow as a way station on their way to becoming integrated into the city but no we're finding that in many african countries this is the third generation of families living in the same slum and they're not integrating into the society and so and
3:50 am
slums are increasingly according to u.n. data in most african cities it's a majority of the population indeed lives in slums without sanitation facilities and often without clean water as you said before that moving into a bigger say did does not necessarily mean that doesn't mean that all that the all life fortunes are going to war senate but i think. at least here in russia we associate living in a city with higher living standards down in the countryside high levels of hygiene high levels of health care but from what i understand living in very high downs communities like slums for the proper access to health care are sometimes met nox as to health care at all what actually increases your likelihood of contracting disease it sure. is that do we understand at this point how those communities even function how do they address those kind of challenges you know not extremely well
3:51 am
for example. growth there's been almost no improvement in access to urban setting patients and it's forty percent of the population has access so when you have figures that low the evidence suggests that no one benefits from the provision if you increase from forty to forty two no one benefits because you still have people desiccated in ellie's and you still have feces everywhere and so the sense of the health effects of something like that could be extraordinary and then if you compound that with many african cities are in dire straits already and there urbanization rates are at some of the highest levels ever so you're compounding a problem that's already severe with an influx that. could create really nothing short of the catastrophe i think well i think in the end of five years or do you describe it as a looming catastrophe here on our hands do you think. their world community at large is well aware of what i don't think why not i don't know i think there is
3:52 am
attention to it but i think things like senate a should it's a topic that a government official wants to discuss it's something that you don't get a lot of ribbon cuttings for opening up a new sewer system you know that you would with redesigning the bolshoi or something like that. that's conjecture about why that's the case but frankly i don't know but there is. and don't let me overstate it there is attention to it but i don't think the resources correspond to the need the argument that is often used to persuade donor countries to. provide resources for that kind of effort is the theory for migration if you don't want people coming into your cities you need to spend some money on making bad lives more livable do you think that is a persuasive argument. and it's one that as you say it's i think. a myth that i'm coming to the cities i know in some countries they in fact
3:53 am
subsidize people to take a bus back to the countryside and they get on the bus and they go back and visit their relatives and then come back to the city and so it goes to my earlier point and the one the way you are take you laid it is cities throughout history have offered bright lights and learning and occupations cities are a great thing and it's just how do you deal with this demographic movement is has always been a difficult process but i think right now in some countries it's a particularly difficult process i heard you say that almost all of the world's next two billion people will leave and they celebrate islam saturated community community problems already do you think they have the problem of slums will ever be resolved is that even possible given where we are at this point of time. you know and so i think you know there's a joke in economics where people said this is unsustainable and if it's unsustainable it indeed will stop. so i think. given
3:54 am
the potential problems here you could get people not moving to cities at nearly the rate that has been interested you could get a reaction from government. and so economists are tend tend to be cynical and they tend to believe that in the long run things work out and so that's one view but i think there is a need to prompt people to react to this so that you react before the. problems occur but i mean the problem of migration especially from the south. africa is i think has been in the making for over a decade i mean it precedes the war in syria and if you think about billions of people moving to very poor conditions regardless of whether they provide sanitation there are no it seems that the only way out of that situation is no the op. to build more housing there but actually it's you are going to leave
3:55 am
it's you you know the thousands die in crossing the mediterranean into europe and the world probably hasn't had this many migrants. in fifty years since world war two i mean it's it is an incredible situation in that we see a lot of the news about international migration but the same thing is going on within countries and there's a rapid movement to cities in the same kind of phenomena now you're alluding to the fact that not many. politicians are policy makers. very key in. that problem or perhaps do not take it as the first priority and. there is a i think a very romantic. urban circles that c.t.'s will find solutions to all the world's problems since these no nation state is that they'll do that do you subscribe to that point of view so i don't think they care and i think cities have been far more innovative the national governments and i do think there's
3:56 am
a sense in which cities are becoming politically more important and the ideas that are generated in the world are you know i think so much of our culture and ideas come from cities and the comes from just one writer jane jacobs talked about the only place where you can see some stranger or other traveler by going to a city and so there's just so much going on ideas are generated and so cities are i think are a fulcrum of change like that but nevertheless central governments are still important very important in terms of addressing larger issues like income distribution and climate change you know what makes me concerned about this kind of discourse is that is the fact that they have long seen a gab that then politics and policies you know ideally politics is supposed to be a facilitator of policies but i think they're increasingly diverging especially in the western countries and my concern is that if we think this way of cities you
3:57 am
know leading the way we will essentially leave all the major issues of life you know war and peace of life and that the politicians. do you have that sense and i wonder if you believe that politicians. care enough about the things that you supposedly care i think there's an awful lot of politicians talking . about ideas that are clearly not only not evidence based but based against evidence and that to me is i don't fully understand but i do observe it a lot and. it's quite distressing and. i don't know how to explain it but it is a it's a real danger and i think measures to. policies that are shown to not be effective is but create political value in some way.
3:58 am
is quite peculiar i don't want to make this into a political it's strictly about the state is where obviously recording it at a time when there is a major fear over confrontation between our countries between the united states russia over syria and you know it just strikes me that. so much attention is paid to delivering a strike on a country whereas as you say we have millions possibly even billions of people living in squalor conditions and nobody ever would even discuss that on on television how do you gather a chance to talk about things that warry you so i think there's. an active discussion it's just there's not much action that's kind of depressing and there's a lot of action. as as i said things that are clearly not only not evidence based
3:59 am
but against the evidence. they're used there's a famous old conservative economist milton friedman who said that economists roller to provide the information and people like the right choice what we see today is something quite different and that information is provided and actions are taken that have very little to do or in fact are the opposite of what mr buckley we have to take over. short break but we have been back in just a few moments stay tuned. we'll willingly accepted the risk of being shot wounded taken prisoner but noone has signed up to the flag and poisoned by our own people i've seen stuff that was nuclear biological and chemical products the said do not truck tires all types of
4:00 am
styrofoam all polystyrene batteries trucks there was a complete denial i think at all levels of government that there was any connection between berm pits and what these brave soldiers were suffering from to compensate every soldier marine airman and sailor that was on the ground that are complaining about illnesses from their exposure from the burn pits would really literally send a v.a. growth and they don't want to pay it so the way to the decades a lot of those soldiers will die in time and they will have to pay and. called relevant because the middle finger the movie is too mild is. delayed and i hope you die. for a world cup twenty eighteen coverage when you've signed one of the greatest goalkeepers of all time but there was one more question and by the way who's going to be our coach. guys i know who you are nervous is

4:02 am
a struggle. nothing in this man's bone his own response to the problem and constructed dozens of tiny homes for people in need of shelter when you have nothing in order to go. you know having something like this may as well be a castle but do the authorities accept such solution. me house on a city parking space is not a solution you're. someone wanted to ring the site otherwise it'll be a free for all the news there a better alternative to end the homelessness crisis. welcome
4:03 am
back to all the part that we think your fellow in international affairs at any a school in the arts. based in brooklyn just to finish. where politicians. attention to. syria is a lot. on my mind a lot and i think there is also something. you know that country also requires an archon how specialist like yourself because it has lots of formerly urban communities where the infrastructure was damaged a great deal some of those communities and now trying to go back to normal but obviously the resources lacking or a very short i wonder if we understand as a global community at this point how do you try to rebuild those cities not only syria but perhaps also in iraq in a way that would encourage reconciliation between various ethnic groups rather than
4:04 am
strengthen the divisions that provoked those conflicts in the first place. the famous english economist lord keynes who said. should be to be like dentists and to say we can repair this tooth and so terms of working in cities you have to have a context that the environment the broader political environment is reasonable and that people can read that politicians will be responding to the people when you have a state of war. there's nothing i can do with my motor skills. the works. and suggesting to go to syria and tried to do it from from from their own ends i'm just asking whether it is no commitment rosabelle to carry out something on that scale that has already i mean to rebuild something on the scale that they have in syria. i think we've had if you go through history it's been cruel and
4:05 am
destructive over and over and so our cities have come back and many are quite beautiful and wonderful places. if you look in the middle east and places like syria i agree with you it's totally depressed. and i wish the political issues involved with it could be resolved i don't begin to understand it or how to do that but i think until that is done there's very little hope that those cities will be able to turn the tide i think it has to come from the broader political context rather than from the city context kirkley from wrong i understand that the a specialized set of matching. or correlating the city's layout its morphology to the economic activity and. we have an interesting example here in russia of the capital grozny which was destroyed two decades ago which has now been the belt of having a federal subsidies but i think there is
4:06 am
a mismatch between how the city looks and how it operates in terms of the organic self-sustaining growth i mean if you have the money you can get out of the city will exist but the question is how you make it self-sustaining. how do you figure out how to do the latter part of what doesn't require so we just did some work what we referred to as trying to avoid what they called the. syndrome and it's this man who thought he was the king of kings and had a statue built of themselves that said all you who look at me despair because i have such a beautiful place that i've designed and it's in fact in the middle of a desert building a city is a very organic spatial structure that responds to economic incentives and it's impossible for one player to know how to allocate make the investments for the entire city i think as you mentioned earlier in new york in barcelona the plans
4:07 am
there and what they did was quite quite basic in terms of set up a structure so that people can respond to the incentives and build in paris and places like that they're just there as paris is a city of. light still it's still quite beautiful and building a city that organically responds to the incentives and structures long live structures that can take advantage of where people want to live how they want to live and so forth is unquestionably the most important thing to do so a public policy maker to assume that he or she could do that is the highest degree and almost certain to fail now i know that you've also started the morphology off largest thirteen largest cities in russia and you suggest that it's my fellow g. is less than optimal in terms of encouraging economic growth what do you see as the major impediments so let me qualify that in
4:08 am
a couple of ways first of all i haven't been to russia in eighteen years i worked here during the transition and now i've come back and it's delightful to be back and meet many old friends and just russian people are so friendly to me and. so my investigation was with the co-author who in fact is my son and he's a geographer who worked through satellite images of russian cities and what we did was compare those images to would cities look like around the world and what we find is that the types of structures of the cities the density of the population is such that it's unusual it's very unusual and so. papers written during the transition suggest that was quite costly to the russian economy and it was one of the reasons that the government was seeking to reform the way cities function. what we've found is that those patterns seem to not only persist but in some places to intensify so twenty five years after the reform you still have cities where instead of having most of the people living in the center of the city you often have most
4:09 am
of them living on the outskirts of the city and so the idea of the city is that people get together and they congregate and they. exchange ideas with a western city but i guess for us the russians. that kind of martha. you know something deeper about our culture we are very centralized people with some authoritarian tendencies so i wonder if that layout is ultimately going to reflection of not only our city planning but also of broader things in our culture you know you could as we say in the paper you know number one we're not sure it matters that it's different and if it does matter we're not sure that it's as costly as it could be but if you look at the studies in america these kinds of distortions they matter they matter a lot and they have. limits are the reduced economic growth in the united states by
4:10 am
fifty percent and so did see ability to move to cities that have the highest productivity if you can't move and you can't move to the places within those cities that afford you the opportunity to exploit your skills it stands to reason that you would be less productive whether that matters on a broader scale or whether it's something cultural we don't know we're just reporting that it is different here. russians to say do they agree to take think what the causes are that we think what can be done about it and what can be done about it is quite difficult question. also attributed to a. problem which you describe as too many people having too many rights to control the property which makes consensus very difficult and i think part of the reason is also that. the russian people after a long history of collective existence have also become very automatized they have void collective solutions collective action even their fifth objectively
4:11 am
that to their benefit is that something permanent or do you saying that may change over time to have we seen in other cities how this collective muscle collective from the positive way how does it form so that was yesterday i gave the presentation and for russian experts responded and people from the audience responded that was almost the continual theme. it's not only the difficulty of negotiating it's the lack of desire to do so and that while the buildings the units were privatized many people don't feel that the building has anything to do they have anything to do with and that they should that should be provided to them and so one commenter said they're not real owners their view themselves as residents and there is this very collected feeling and so that's something that i think is profoundly difficult to change and it will take. i also think that in terms of the transition that some people take for example
4:12 am
a person living on the outskirts of for example. in a quite a distance from a job who has. transport heavily subsidized utilities heavily subsidized and not many job opportunities there are not as many as there were in the old days. what does a person do if you think of this the house with been given if you put the real cost to the utilities there are opportunities and there transport in fact they weren't given an asset they were given something that detracts from their wealth and so that person is in a tough spot and so a lot of russians i think are in that spot and it makes it a very profoundly difficult political question it's an interesting observation especially given that there are authorities like to complain. the lack of social mobility on the part of the population but you can also i guess think about the policy is that and courage that social mobility by for example restructuring some
4:13 am
of those subsidies or how paying people to make. rational decisions about their property but i think they are making rational decisions and it's difficult for the government to move away from subsidising the transport of utilities simply because those people are in such a costly spot in the killer for it particularly pensioners what do you do about that and that's just a transition from one type of system to another it's a very costly system change this is one that i don't think is from the discussion yesterday people were saying this is something we need to look at more closely now you mentioned that there haven't been in quite some time and i'm sure you've noticed that there must have put a lot of thought a lot of resources and various beautification. projects they have really trying now to make this environment a little bit more hospitable but i think an interesting phenomenon here is that. many of the residents are not actually excited about the kind of innovation and
4:14 am
what it also reveals as they. scale of community cation on the part of the authorities or perhaps on the part of the population is that. a particular russian phenomenon known as is this something that you see in other cities as well. i'm not sure i guess i should say the city. center here but it's quite lovely and it's really it's not what it was when i was here when the transition was going on it's no it it's a european city feels a little if you see incredibly russian but it just it's delightful. so to me as an external observer in the person who goes to lots of cities. it's great to come back and the people are very warm. it's just the delightful experience that he was speaking on that first of all and i guess my question is more professional and. more off your profit professional expertise i think they the idea that the mosque
4:15 am
authorities have is that if you crave the right kind of environment that you know how to bring. more people into the city not only tourist but also on business as it will also how keep the most agitated within the city do you think that kind of rationale is going to work especially given the. kind of times that male even so what i think. this is. a fascinating historical moment and it reminds me of. new york when there was a man named robert moses who they say that he's the only man in the twentieth century who you can see from the moon see his creations on earth and he really carved up new york city and he built a lot of it he built lincoln center he did a lot with the central park but he also destroyed a lot and he destroyed and they cut through neighborhoods particularly poor
4:16 am
neighborhoods and avoided the rich neighborhoods and so his movement restructuring a city. you know for better or worse must goes in a point where it needs to restructure and so how do you do those things when you have all the millions and millions of people who have different ideas you have to listen to them and i think the. robert moses was a woman named jane jacobson very much getting community participation but that slows things down a lot and you can understand when there's a need for change what people don't want to engage the community but nevertheless if you don't it doesn't work and so i think it's a very difficult i don't begin to second guess the things that have been. but i wish them well. mr buckley thank you very much for this conversation it's been delightful after. retire and i also encourage our viewers to keep it going on our social media pages as for me i hope to see you again same place same time here on worlds apart.
