have you heard of them and how much do you trust them and that means what's to be believed is based on the opinion of the internet not necessarily facts even flat earth errors and bertha's may have cast their votes we put that data into the system and insights and is a booster of suppression and we're going to dial up the intense to that over time we feel that we have a responsibility to further break down polarization and find common ground some other wafted goals given that the internet isn't exactly known for bringing out the best in people there's also surely a risk that such a system will only cause people to further dig in their heels not break down polarization hopes a result that was seen with one of facebook's previous attempts at tackling fake news last year the company pulled the plug on its initiative which had third party fact checkers red flagging disputed articles as it didn't have the desired effect academic research and correcting misinformation has shown that putting a strong image like a red flag next to an article may actually entrenched deeply held beliefs the opposite to fact to what we intended the big issue here is what. they mean is this

credible or informative new source is it what fits mark zuckerberg political view is it what it's facebook's political view. in terms of unbiased independent journalism i don't see a big success at all i don't see anything which puts a private corporation like facebook who has shown to be not the most trusting of sources of light i don't see anything that putting them in charge of this kind of responsibility could turn out to be successful in a way shape or form for independent journalism so here we are again watching and waiting to see how facebook's latest attempt at social responsibility pans out. german police in the southern region of baton virtanen berg have conducted a large scale raid on a refugee center migrants there how to earlier obstructed the authorities from deporting one of the residents our europe correspondent peter all of our can bring
12:32 pm
us up to speed on the stories that are going to evening afternoon in fact where you are tensions clearly running high either talk us through just what house on fall did. well they saw the end of this saga which resulted in a adored raid but it's better if we jump back in time to monday for the background on the best place to start anyway what happened was police arrived at this refugee center in boston gotten bored in the town of el vegas near stuttgart the major city around there they arrived to carry out a deportation order against a twenty three year old man from togo while they had him in handcuffs the crowd started to gather in the amongst the refugees across got bigger and bigger we're told it was as many as two hundred largest they were demanding the release of this totally man. they eventually got that release the police hundred them overly
12:33 pm
released him from his cuffs or at least a hundred over the keys and he was released from his cuffs they then retreated now what we're hearing from senior police says they following this dawn raid is that they cast no aspersions over the conduct of those offices on monday they say that they did exactly what was necessary and were glad that they had retreated as they feared for the safety of those police we hear from. we hear that there were threats made against the police should they return to the to the refugee center well they just slap on thursday morning in very large numbers we're hearing as many as two hundred police involved in this dawn raid that took place they took the target of their air raid into custody along. with seventeen others what we know about the man at the center of this is that he was a is a totally national twenty three years old he derived initially seeking asylum and it registered in italy and it's to italy that he intended to be deported under the the dublin treaty in the e.u. it means that wherever a refugee first read just is their status as
12:34 pm
a refugee that's the country they should be and that's the country that has the. responsibility to look after them he didn't come here to germany and applied for refugee status again being tonight and that's why he was being supported but that's not the crux of this whole situation now the police have been accused and some say has been heavy handed on thursday morning however senior police figures locally say that they hot to move in in the way they did to stop this whole situation spiraling further out of control. structures were organized at the refuges santa that's apparently going to obstruct the tortoise were a season there was considerable danger of it emerging as a lawless area. also the twenty three year old taken to another facility along with seventeen others who were detained during that morning raid we understand some refugees were treated for
12:35 pm
injuries after they jumped from windows also that a number of police officers have been receiving medical treatment for mild injuries as well of course this whole incident to spark the real reaction here in germany with politicians from all sides coming out and giving their opinions one of the most vocally is one of the always one of the most vocal in german politics the rich recently appointed interior minister. the former christian social union leader he had this to say pulling no punches as usual. what happened there is a blow to the lower abiding population we shouldn't let them trample on our hospitality. there are plenty of questions over just how this situation was allowed to escalate to the level in which it did and also a lot more questions being asked about what's being done to make sure that it can't happen anywhere else. our europe correspondent peter all over with the latest on the thank you. they iconic boy scouts of america are
12:36 pm
set to undergo a rebranding of sorts of one hundred and eighty years and it seems that the city which will be introduced early next year isn't a holy popular one. i take it. right we wanted to land on something that evokes the best but also conveys the inclusive nature of the program going forward we're trying to find the right way to say we're here for both young men and young women. girl scouts is a premier leadership development organization for her we are and will remain the first choice for girls and parents.
12:37 pm
let's be honest the boy scouts as we knew it is now effectively dead goes on all supposed to be a part of the boy scouts they have their own organization to go scout as a form of boy scouts i say this is a terrible idea boys need to be with other boys at times without girls being present to be boys the boy scouts raping the dualistic girls g.'s losing membership and money feminists and nothing the boy scouts moves not realizing it may destroy the women run because counts. you know lots of reaction to this we heard both sides of the argument from political activist kate smyth weights legal and media analyst lionel. there isn't a great deal of evidence to suggest that only boys want to do traditionally male activities and only girls want to do traditionally female activities there is very very obviously there are a lot of girls dr like climbing trees and there are lots of knowing there is like
12:38 pm
baking cakes and to try to say to young people you have to only do this what we should of course do is give them a range of activities on sunday letting them actually encourage them to try new stuff because that's what not they are they are what it is i'll file that's not what this is about and you know if there was an absolute determined effort to destroy whatever was left of this thing called the gender it's now considered almost like racist or inappropriate to do anything to distinguish boys from girls who are playing it so safe we've got the helmets there was a time when if you were a red blooded american male let's not have alway's lines that have kids with his right arm and cried i read here and there i mean it's fine and there was nothing wrong with it i'm kind of concerned with the idea that it's somehow great to encourage boys to to fight and be super of tip super rough and super violent with each other i think but this is two thousand and eighteen and the idea that it's
12:39 pm
somehow good for young men to be thrown into some sort of boxing ring i think that we should offer young people boys and girls a whole range of activities and there are definitely arguments in favor of allowing them to do some of those activities and violent marriage definitely arguments in favor of allowing them to do at least some of those activities mixed environment what you're seeing is the woods sophistication of just boys and girls and how we are just turning their men to just these these i don't know these hominids or these kids who don't play who don't enjoy doing things like i did like we did being a boy and roughhousing those people think this is absurd kids are not allowed to be kids. the more if you look at the kind of science of it where a young people do best it turns out perhaps surprisingly perhaps unsurprisingly that goals seem to thrive better in single sex environments for things like that
12:40 pm
but boys actually seem to thrive better in mixed environments it seems like having some girls join in maybe takes away some of the sort of culture if you like people are afraid that there are genders and that boys like to do boys stuff and the girls like to do girls stuff it's not accurate they're stick it's true france is a leader and it's going to persuading to go on the islands of new caledonia in the pacific their french territory for another but i could all change this year we've got more on that story and much much more after this. twenty eight team coverage we've signed one of the greatest kill people. but there was one more question by the way who's going to be our coach. you guys i know you are nervous he's a huge star and the huge amount of pressure you have to the center of the beach but
12:41 pm
how would you. grade the grid if you are the rock at the back nobody gets to you we need you to get down there we have to go. alone. and i'm really happy to join for the thousand in the world cup in russia meet the special one come on both appreciate me just like the radio teams latest edition make up as we go. look.
12:42 pm
let's start back in the u.s. where police a body has emerged all of officers teasing a mentally ill man eighteen times treadmill was later pronounced dead warning you may find the following video. why do you have. three officers had to ride out the twenty two year olds apartment after a call from his neighbor which reportedly mentioned tremelo was threatening to hurt himself he was in the shower when police arrived and was tasered multiple times when he failed to respond to their commands in one instance for thirty four seconds . all tamil died less than an hour later according to the medical
12:43 pm
examiner's report the manner of his death is undetermined however it was also stated that they taser used was a contributing factor this spy thought a country attorney find no evidence against the officers over his death and others case is far from the first to have thrown the heavy handed use of tasers into the spotlight.
12:44 pm
but we spoke to the founder of communities united against police brutality who believes taser regulation is a big problem in the us the police violated a number of policies first of all they broke into his home without probable cause to do so and secondly they taste him multiple times eighteen times in fact while he was in the bath tub where the person is take if their skin is wet much more electricity conducts through their body the sad reality is that tasers are verily very poorly regulated the united states we started out with them having some rules around using tasers now they literally stick a taser on people they don't want their answer to something and it's outrageous because these devices are dangerous in this case and in many other cases they've proven to be deadly more than fifty percent of the people who are killed by police in this country are in the throes of
12:45 pm
a mental health crisis so we can see there is really a problem and we really really need to stop using police as the way that we address mental illness in this country. president among you will microland has set off to french overseas territory now as he looks to persuade the people of new caledonia to remain part of front. i think that it will be essential a symbolic a lot of responsibility it's already managed by the government.
