5:30 pm
we went to the wedding and suddenly during the celebration the strike came we didn't have anything then no weapons no nothing to food the same happened to my brother my other brother died because of the bombing we tried to flee but could not walk we had to wait until ambulances came and garces dozen of the wounded are in critical condition it's just a note on this we're yet to hear from the saudi led coalition to our request for an update on its investigation into what happened. to all this the saudi led military operation in yemen was launched against the control vos territories in the north the saudis have repeatedly insisted that they do not target civilians the coalition has carried out a number of its own investigations into airstrikes that have led to mass casualties rights groups continue to call. to end the conflict. getting stateside former cia director mike pump aoe has been sworn in as u.s.
5:31 pm
secretary of state and given a ringing endorsement by donald trump the president said he believes the appointment will reenergize the country's foreign policy establishment. i must say that's more spirit than i've heard from the state department a long time many years we can say many years maybe many decades it's going to be a fantastic start a fantastic day and that spirit will only be magnified only with this man right here i know that for a fact. now with official praises a true american hero my palm pale has been sworn in as the nation's chief diplomat and he's vowing to make department great again i talked about getting back our swagger and i'll fill in what i mean. by that but it's important the united states
5:32 pm
diplomatic corps needs to be in every corner every stretch of the world executing missions on behalf of this country and pump a speech was well received by everyone from the media to other officials some don't even wait to compare of the tillerson saying that he was more open than tillerson ever was pump a i did however stress the concept of american exceptionalism which is generally considered controversial in some circles i talked in my my hearing about the fact that this nation is so exceptional and so incredibly blessed this is a unique exceptional country russia is unique but not exceptional and he's wasting no time taking the reins for us predecessor my pompei has spent his first days as secretary of state showing support to israel and that was just before israeli prime minister benjamin netanyahu made some inflammatory claims against iran accusing the country of lying about a secret nuclear weapons program for years but pompei was tough stance on iran and
5:33 pm
other supposedly hostile states are new. i can't think of a thing that is put america in a better position as a result of this deal every single action the iranians have taken has been bolder and starker than the ones they took before the agreement. a very real danger they are ever closer to having the capacity to hold america risk with a nuclear weapon. it is difficult to imagine a stable syria that still has assad in power he is a puppet of the iranians and therefore it seems an unlikely situation where assad will be sitting on the throne and america's interests will be well served this is the same man who made a secret trip to north korea to pave the way for trump's historic meeting with kim jong un but bringing peace to the korean peninsula has become a top foreign policy priority for the u.s. administration but judging by the hawkish track records of those surrounding the president you might have to wonder what their real intentions are samir khan art.
5:34 pm
washington d.c. well after a series of trips abroad mike pompei will now spend the coming weeks in washington picking up where his predecessor rex tillerson left off a nuclear studies director we heard from tillis he fears u.s. foreign policy will quickly become more bellicose under. donald trump in announcing that tillerson was going to be leaving office said that he disagreed with tillerson about iran policy so that was a key factor is not going to disagree with pompei o and that's why the europeans are so frightened and it's why one hundred foreign policy experts including fifty retired military officials said to trump wrote a letter saying we should not break this deal with iran it's in the united states interest it's a good deal and iran has been following it clearly pompei o is among the real hawks when it comes to iran policy he's going to reinforce donald trump's worst
5:35 pm
tendencies along with john bolton the same thing with north korea so north korea right now looks very very positive but we know that between now and the time when this deal is concluded there's a hundred ways that it could blow up every day if pompei o wants to be a moderating force a north korea that's great i would hope he will also be a moderating force when it comes to iran but i doubt it the news continues in one thousand. local blogs sell you on the idea that dropping bombs brings police to the chicken hawks forcing you to fight the battle. to stop spreading tell you that every gossip and public by files for news. off the bad guys and tell me you are not full enough to buy their product. all the hawks that we along with all
5:36 pm
of what. make this manufacture consent to stick to public will. when the ruling classes protect themselves. with the final. be the one percent. we can all middle of the room sick. really. low again the iconic boy scouts of america are about to undergo
5:37 pm
a rebranding of sorts after one hundred eighty years now it seems the decision to drop the word boy from its name which will happen early next year as the organization welcomes girls to its ranks isn't a holy popular one. i say. oh you're right we wanted to land on something that evokes the best but also conveys the inclusive nature of the program going forward we're trying to find the right way to say we're here for both young men and young women. the girl scouts is the premier leadership development organisation for girls we are and will remain the first choice for girls and parents.
5:38 pm
let's be honest the boy scouts as we knew it is now effectively dead goals are not supposed to be a part of the boy scouts they have their own organization go scout as a form of boy scouts i say this is a terrible idea boys need to be with other boys at times without girls being present to be boys the boy scouts raping the dualistic girls g.'s losing membership and money feminists and loving the boy scouts moves not realizing it may destroy the women run going to scouts. well from being hurled it as a long overdue inclusive it's easy to claim that it's another move to demonize anything that's gender specific the sky it's in the soft fiery discussion here on our team. there isn't a great deal of evidence to suggest that only boys want to do traditionally male activities and only girls want to do traditionally female activities there is very very obviously there are a lot of girls soccer like climbing trees and there are lots of knowing there is
5:39 pm
like baking cakes and to try to say to young people you have to only do this what we should of course do is give them a range of activities on sunday letting them actually encourage them to try new stuff because that's what they hear shows are they are what it is or i have found that's not what this is about and you know if there was an absolute determined effort to destroy whatever was left of this thing called the jones or it's now considered almost like races or inappropriate to do anything to distinguish boys from girls we're playing it so safe we've got a helmet there was a time when if you were a red blooded american male that's not how they're always learned to have kids you know here's where a large ad cried i read here and there i mean fine as there was nothing wrong with it i'm kind of concerned with the idea that it's somehow great to encourage boys to to fight and be super of tip super rough and super violent with each other i think
5:40 pm
that this is two thousand and eighteen and the idea that it somehow good for young men to be thrown into some sort of boxing ring i think that we should offer young people boys and girls a whole range of activities and there are definitely arguments in favor of allowing them to do some of those activities and violent marriage definitely arguments in favor of allowing them to do at least some of those activities environment what you're seeing is the would sophistication of just boys and girls and how we are just turning their men to just these these i don't know these hominids or these kids who don't play who don't enjoy doing things like i did like we did being a boy and roughhousing those people think that this is absurd kids are not allowed to be kids. the more if you look at the kind of science of it when young people do best it turns out perhaps surprisingly perhaps unsurprisingly that goals seem to
5:41 pm
thrive better in single sex environments for things like that but boys actually seem to thrive better in mixed environments it seems like having some goals join in maybe takes away some of the sort of culture if you like people are afraid that there are genders and that boys like to do boys stuff and the girls like to do girls stuff it's not accurate to stick it's true. facebook is looking to regain its users trust in the wake of the data harvesting scandal involving cambridge analyst's ago the social media behemoths is no introducing a number of changes to the platform including a personalized news filter just takes a closer look now facebook is working hard to revamp its public profile in the wake of the privacy scandal and the platforms move to eliminate fake news from your feed is one such example i have your responsibility news is two things make sure people get trustworthy news and platform and we're doing our job to help build
5:42 pm
a sense of common ground in society now who's to decide what news organizations are worthy the company's two billion users the social network has already started using the results of the user surveys to determine what news publications will be popping up in your feed and which will be suppressed and the range of an outlet is based on two simple questions have you heard of them and how much do you trust them and that means what's to be believed is based on the opinions of the internet not necessarily facts even flat earth errors and bertha's may have cast their votes. we put that data into the system and insights and is a booster of suppression and we're going to dial up the intensity of that over time we feel that we have a responsibility to further break down polarization and find common ground some rather lofty goals given that the internet isn't exactly known for bringing out the best in people there's also surely a risk that such a system will only cause people to further dig in their heels and not break down polarization hopes a result that was seen with one of facebook's previous attempts at tackling fake
5:43 pm
news last year the company pulled the plug on its initiative which had third party fact checkers read flogging disputed articles as it didn't have the desired effect i get them at research and correcting misinformation has shown that putting a strong image like a red flag next to an article may actually entrenched deeply held beliefs the opposite of fact to what we intended the big issue here is what. they mean is this credible or informative new source is it what fits mark zuckerberg political view is it what it's facebook's political view. in terms of unbiased independent journalism i don't see a big success at all i don't see anything which puts a private corporation like facebook who has shown to be not the most trusting of sources of light i don't see anything that putting them in charge of this kind of responsibility could turn out to be successful in a way shape or form for independent journalism so here we are again watching and waiting to see how facebook's latest attempt at social responsibility pans out.
5:44 pm
well facebook's also facing criticism over its filtering of news sources that some activists are calling a form of censorship one organization which is called us conservative leaders planes this suppression of right wing views on social media has reached crisis point they say are clips from both sides of the political spectrum should be respected and given equal waiting online but recent gains in major elections across the globe we asked new yorkers what exactly they know about the term rightwing sunday's elections in austria where the latest example of a shift to the right in europe's politics this this shows that the far right wing has won its prevailed polls in germany predict that a far right party will inter-parliamentary the term right wing is being used pretty liberally these days we decided to ask americans what does far right or right wing actually mean let's see what kind of answers we get what is far right mean your way
5:45 pm
but that be like a nazi stream. capitalist these it's probably a more militant version of right wing. maybe a little more. an artistic view on the world's. largest and probably a more extreme viewpoint of far right far right means very far right. what does that mean on the right side very far ok donald trump is far right. i think he's trying to come to the sent to because he has to administer right or he was more far right before he became the president i think he's all over the place to tell you the truth i don't know that he has an ideology other than donald trump no not necessarily and he's right of center dave definitely yes but i mean the fact is he's a former democrat he's not that far right any world leaders that you would consider to be far right. of fundamentalist leaders
5:46 pm
are far right. and. i think he's right yeah maybe puton but like i don't know you you want i'm not sure. he's considered far right dick durban may be. prime minister of austria perhaps. i don't know there might be a few others seems that in politics words can be rather hard to define caleb mop and artsy new york former u.s. diplomat jim just for us believes there is a multifaceted effort by social media platforms to sideline views that don't fit with the company's political agenda. i think there's a real concern is that conservative voices are being discriminated against in social media not only facebook but twitter which i use quite a bit and google and. the idea would be to marginalize or stigmatize conservative voices as somehow being beyond the limits of legitimate discussion and
5:47 pm
we also have practices what they call shadow banning where there are there are ways to downgrade content if it's politically not correct so that it has fewer viewers that they try to deem monetize conservative voices so that they can't actually support their platforms in the way that voices on the left are able to do it which evidently is more acceptable in the circles that in which the managers of these platforms operate. and you can get your updates on the day's big news stories at the top of the hour with kevin own but stay with us now for more great programs right ahead. that's geysers financial survival guide liquid assets not those that you can burn in zinc that's quite easily. to keep in mind no assets i mean to
5:48 pm
a place where. there were. twenty eighteen coverage we've signed one of the greatest kill people. but there was one more question and by the way who's going to be our coach. guys i know you are nervous is a huge start a month and a huge amount of pressure to come out you have to be the center of the problem we would you. agree. you are the rock at the back nobody gets past you we need you to get down going let's go. a low as. and i'm really happy to join that for the thousand and ten world cup in russia. this special one come on both appreciate me to just say the radio. the latest edition to make up this week i need to just say look.
5:49 pm
i'm. not. going to have to. send. greetings and salutation. despite all evidence to the contrary like the orgasmic joy seen on c.n.n. every few months when the united states drops a few bombs on yet another group of poor people on the opposite side of the world
5:50 pm
spite all that the last time the united states congress actually declared war was all the way back in june one thousand nine hundred forty two against romania of all places as part of world war two this of course leads to one of the great political paradoxes of our time just how does the united states legally justified its constant state of warfare when our founding paperwork the founding paperwork of a country the united states constitution quite specifically states that only congress has the power to declare war not george herbert walker not bill c. not not moroccan certainly not the donald. enter the highly controversial and much debated authorization for use of military force or a us that that along with the national defense authorization act has been responsible for all of our collective killing of poor brown folks around the world since nine eleven representative barbara lee out of california was the lone vote
5:51 pm
against the a u.s. back in two thousand and one stating it was a blank check to the president to attack anyone involved in the september eleventh events anywhere in any country without regard to our nation's long term foreign policy economic and national security interests and without time limit in granting these overly broad powers of the congress failed its responsibility to understand the dimensions of its director late declaration and sadly that they have as the a you a map has been stretched about as thin as it could ever possibly be imagined in order to justify u.s. military action in syria and other places and now congress has got that authorizing military force feeling again and particularly u.s. senators bob corker and tim kaine you remember tammy ran with hillary rodham years ago. looking to replace the original a.u.m. apps with a new and improved trump proof two thousand and eighteen version of a u.s.
5:52 pm
. but i'm a but are they are they truly trying to put congress back in control of the us war machine or the really just midterm elections smoke and mirrors with potentially deadly consequences let's find out as we start watching the hawks. already feel that the. real thing is. as you said a lot of. what they like you know that i got. from over the watching the harks i am tired robot example of the wallace and oh wow are really going to fix that whole. i like guy perverted call there you have left the
5:53 pm
authorization of the military for its god like reading its own own phone first kind of a sound your soul makes when you look at all the comfortably outer skin is wrought since its inception i know and it's not all that different from the old a us mouth it doesn't really take care of the problems that even people you know like barbara was serving and it's not really dealing with that issue here so the new. repeals the two thousand and one in two thousand and two laws but it states in at least two places that it will prove provides a interrupted authority to can continue using the two thousand and one a us. so basically we're talking about is that we're great it's kind of like what the new i am. is like we're breaking up. if you're lonely and in a jam. not really changing a whole lot just kind of we're we're we're no longer in the relationship on
5:54 pm
facebook it's complicated god. ok gosh you know when your tax will still show and apparently the relationship never ends between the president they are pretty much knows as they say it and they it just says that we have to talk about it every year we don't have meetings about it because you know what meetings i'm talking about they don't even do it doesn't think congress doesn't talk about things when they need to before they sign as and then they're only answers but we'll talk about it there's a little it was like a divorced relationship congress is building like so they're taking all of their personal lives and suddenly like putting that it was that they passed like on only talk to my wife like every four years we're going to hash some things out but i'm not really going to get divorced so we just disagree to talk everything or you're like to get married i believe you're like i'm twenty what if you know it also does what else do you appreciate this a lot of debate has been had over you know kind of stretching the i.o.f. been saying look look it was it was designed back in nine eleven and two thousand and two thousand and two thousand and two and now they're using it to like justify
5:55 pm
fighting isis which wasn't even didn't even exist back in you know two thousand and one isn't even associate with al qaeda to a completed group the new one kind of like says oh no we're going to fix that problem so corker the corcoran came up adds more groups to the list of whom it's ok pretty united states the bum they are the taliban and al qaeda oldies but goodies and islamic state in iraq and syria and the ever lovely designated associate forces whatever the hell that means well or whoever the hell that means which as of right now includes al qaeda in the arabian peninsula. syria the hakani network and al qaida in the islamic magreb and mike and i was in my mind but where is the united states not in fact arming al qaeda in syria. or are happy you know you know rebels. a little bit i think we got the colors i would rather colors of as far as i can keep up with what you don't think i'm the other. dynamic
5:56 pm
thing this does is it also and this is very scary it a lot of debate happened because you know who the president can detain that kind of approach war right so the mayor. also decides a new route for adding to that list i just mentioned right so the president can add to that list he can say this new group over a year that i don't like they can be on the list he can do that but congress says that he has to write to them first he has forty eight hours to write to them saying i want this new group as part of the you amount and then congress can debate it all and they're trying to say this is a check and balance to take away power from the presidency but i want all right let's say that they don't like the group that he that he that he put forth right ok so then they're going to say ok they're going to vote draft a bill saying no you can't put them on the list when he's going to veto it here she was present going to be to it right and then they're going to two thirds to overturn the veto which is never going to happen you know so it's kind of like of
5:57 pm
the road going to check and balance things out as i say i don't i don't think resistance means what they think it doesn't really it really does it not when you're just going to handing think you're changing the wording because it's midterm elections you want to say who stood up to trumpet change there your math people don't really it's the same thing that never ends and we can bomb where we want. the boy scouts of america was founded in one nine hundred ten and the girl scouts of america in one thousand eleventh and over the last century much of the core philosophy of the separate but not equal organizations has remained unchanged until now the boy scouts of america announced in early april of this year that they would officially be allowing girls and young women ages eleven to seventeen to join under their new scout me and program and this week they announced that their flagship program for scouts eleven to seventeen was changing its name from boy scouts to scouts b.s.a. not the organization's name to be clear just that one program and some people many people are not happy about it mainly you guessed it the girl scouts of america.
5:58 pm
august kathy hope and not hard on the national president the girl scouts of the usa were scathing letter to boy scout president mr randall stephenson stating that she found the idea of the boy scouts letting girls and quote unsettling that b.s.a. would seek to up that a paradigm that has served with those boys and girls so well through the years and that they should quote not consider expanding to work crew girls the letter went on to attack the boy scouts decision as dangerous and reckless saying the girls need a safe space and that the girl scouts are the only ones equipped to handle the needs of young women the most puzzling of all was an accusation that they were secretly testing the idea to appeal to my little millennial parents apparently that's a crime the question is why are the girl scouts treating young women and girls as mindless commodities that are only allowed to be used by their own gender in such a public way and what does it say about women when the leader of
5:59 pm
a major women's organization is using the emasculation of one of the men's organization in order to keep their membership numbers up and keep those cookie sales rising. the great question i got to say goes a great question when you were talking about this earlier it struck me to the good stuff for the boy scouts to do every didn't they just part of themselves a few years back and like a barrel of hot water over homosexuality and scully had already lost as there's always been as good as their record that is ahead right here to me represents a good step hey you know we're not going to be we're going to not going to an exclusive club anymore we're going to come and join this particular thing great ok problem solved why is there so much craziness and why of all people the girl scouts this group said about this i don't i don't do i think it's a bad look as a feminist i think it's about black i really don't like this kind of stuff i understand the viewpoint of people and the thing is it's making it seem as if the last wants to be politically correct here and nobody is trying to be politically anything it's literally about family is in the boy scouts and look the families
6:00 pm
wanted to do this they wanted to have something inclusive the girl scouts don't provide that or your their daughter doesn't want to participate in those programs now one of the exam i want to sort of rebut to her letter and the view it's kind of a nasty little thing going on here the idea that same's that sex education is better for girls she says that the people keep repeating this idea that says research has shown that girls do better research shows that kids do better in same sex an educational environment so boys and girls separately that's not true it's not scientifically proven it has it like the the data for that is inconclusive evidence is the statement saying is really telling the thousands over three or four thousand young girls have signed up for these programs and what they're the thing with the girl scouts don't realize is that what you're doing is shaming them and saying they're not being. your little.
