on symbols but not that much on real implementation. as our guest i just pointed out it's unclear how far the e.u. will actually go in standing up to the u.s. but it's not just the trump administration's radical approach to diplomacy those creating uncertainty a number of shadow players are also having an impact as american explains the u.s. has left iran yet at the same time someone's jamming their foot in the door while the current secretary of state digs in and lays out the defense one of his predecessors wearing up president trumps not weakens our security breaks america's word isolates us from our european allies puts israel a greater risk empowers iran's hard line of this and he chooses a global leverage to address terence misbehavior while damaging the ability of future administrations to make international agreements it's ludicrous to suggest iran feels less constrained they fired missiles into where americans travel each day followed missiles into israel i would argue they felt they could act with

impunity the former secretary of state john kerry isn't just making a statement factual shadow diplomacy and just this year kerry met with several high level iranian officials which was confirmed by both the trumpet mr ation and the iranian government and trump was furious the united states does not need john kerry's possibly illegal shadow diplomacy on the very badly negotiated iran do he was the one that created this mess in the first place iran feels it's now got more options when dealing with the us we don't see the us just as mr trump the united states is not just the current ruling administration it's claimed by kerry's trip to iran wasn't the only time the former secretary of state met his former iranian counterparts in terms former foreign policy advisor posted this picture from paris claiming it's kerry leaving a meeting with the iranians that which allegedly blasted the us president also worth noting a few diplomatic hints for america's european partners courtesy of some of barack obama's presidential advisors the european union could for instance announce the

withdrawal. of member states ambassador is from the united states depending on the american response european capitals might even follow up with the expulsion of american ambassadors but if you think team trump is innocent of pulling strings in the shadows think again his transition team was must bring in the month before taking office while the obama administration abstained and let pass a un resolution condemning israeli settlements in the west bank trumps former national security advisor michael flynn was busy contacting members of the security council to delay or vote against the resolution so when it comes to us foreign policy you just have to ask yourself who's really behind it and do they speak for the whole country has sometimes it's been called simultaneously in opposite directions so we are caught on our t.v. washington d.c. . the german chancellor angela merkel is visiting the russian city of software where she is expected to sit down with president vladimir putin. has are standing

by and such a right now to follow developments a good one if you're just after eight in the morning where you are now merkel and president they will have a lot to go through today don back. story good morning well angola merkel is getting together with vladimir putin basically just days after donald trump said goodbye to the irradiating nuclear deal that you've been talking about just before that and it is a good reason i guess for the two leaders who both what's the deal to be there no matter what to have a conversation about it and added to their usual ukraine syria agenda. i think it's not right to can you actually cancel a deal that was agreed upon that was unanimously approved in the u.n. security council should diminishes confidence in the international. donald trump's deal exit almost automatically meant that american sanctions against iran war
6:34 am
coming back and. german business leaders who thanks to the iran agreement to do business there actually ask the chancellor to protect their economic interests now interest sorry now here's something else that i would like to point out the u.s. media reports suggested that the american president was pushing angola merkel to abandon the nords train to gas pipeline project for direct natural gas deliveries from russia to europe reportedly donald trump's administration even threatened to reconsider the terms of a trade agreement with the you now going back to the upcoming meeting we didn't hear from angela merkel side and also nothing about this from vladimir putin's side that some of the anti russian sanctions this kind of discussions will
6:35 am
be brought up but obviously they may be mentioned once ukraine is mentioned speaking of syria just days ago when the german chancellor was addressing the bundestag she said that the conflict cannot be resolved without getting all the international partners involved but for some reason in this case she didn't mention the u.s. . intuitionism all of the middle of the civil war in syria and this fight against islamic terrorism has asking lated from the original conflict to an international one which cannot be sold without russia turkey iran saudi arabia jordan and you are in. any way this will be anglo marco's fifteenth trip to sought she and a total of twenty four meetings between mr putin and then go merkel have happened before so we will be watching whether there will be some kind of warmth between

them as a result of donald trump abandoning the nuclear deal or maybe they. it will remain diplomatic only and somewhat cold. thanks. that was the same as if it's the russian president likes to drink german beer and sometimes there is a possibility that we can exchange i've also gotten very good small things. angela from time to time sends me a couple of bottles of rather good to be. when we spoke with a german politician fairly resized russia and germany share

a common interest when it comes to the iran deal in particular. to give that was so much in photoshop. and. nuclear. iran and other nations under the umbrella of united nations and if i think we have a common interest so the germans and the muslims and the us of the chinese and i was us a flight. to keep the. view of on we share common interests. and therefore i'm saying we expect in germany at least there's a mind to be outstanding it was on it's off this meeting and it's a busy day for worldwide headlines here in austin international we are back in just a moment.

has lost a scheme to prevent election related propaganda and misinformation it's a joint project with the atlantic council that is a well known washington based think tank. this will help increase the number of ice and ears who have working to spot potential abuse on our service enabling us to more effectively identify gaps in our systems preempt obstacles and ensure that facebook plays a positive role during elections all around the world. the atlantic council calls itself a nonpartisan institution but it's been criticized for giving corporate donors privileged access to us on foreign government officials some of its biggest contributors are weapons manufacturers and oil giants and critics describe it as a platform for neo conservatives libertarian politician says the partnership will ultimately backfire on facebook. this is a clear response to the fact that americans are growing increasingly disenfranchise
6:44 am
with the nonsensical military propaganda we don't believe this military nonsense anymore and more and more americans want to get out of nato entirely and so you have now the atlantic council whose entire mission is to maintain and grow organizations like nato and obviously including nato and now they're getting access to our social media security but they are not really intellectually neutral they're not politically neutral they risk clearly have an agenda of expansion of military aggression of encouraging other countries to do proxy military aggression so they're certainly not unbiased so i think this is going to backfire against facebook this is not what the american people want we don't want more propaganda telling us that we need military overreach we want less military overreach. digital project romanov's one hundred dedicated to russia's last remaining family is launching a special competition that anyone can participate in and the idea is to make

6:48 am
on larry king donald trump campaigned on making america great again in one crucial vote for workers in the u.s. rust belt that his were let loose criticism of unfair trade deals with china made by his predecessors but in a presidential tweet monday mr trump pledged to rescue controversial chinese telecom giant z t e saying the company's failure would cost too many jobs in china what's behind the president's decision let's talk about that with chris lou who served as white house cabinet secretary and deputy secretary of labor during the obama administration and he's now assume the university of the in the lower center he joins us from washington d.c. chris on wednesday president trump tweeted that his reversal on the chinese
6:49 am
companies e.t.e. pertains to a large a trade deal. and the accused the washington post and c.n.n. are running full stories about his delusions was china what do you make of that well i'm not sure what to make of it and i think a lot of people in washington and around the world are scratching their head let's recall this was all started by a tweet from the president himself saying that he was going to be working with president xi to resolve this is e.t.e. issue and it's a complicated one and has to do with a company a telecommunications companies e t a that was found to have violated the sanctions and having done business with iran and north korea and appropriately the united states took action against this company so it's curious that the president is getting involved in an foresman matter but there are a lot of implications here there's national security there is obviously trade issues and then there's north korea wrapped into all of this i think the president
6:50 am
thinks that by resolving the c.t.e. issue which is an important one to the chinese government he can hope to untangle the other disputes that we're in with china but it remains to be seen whether he can do that or not is it confusing to you. it's incredibly confusing to me i mean obviously this is a president who pledged to make america great again he is appropriately taking action against china for trade imbalances for their effect of intellectual property and now to have done a one hundred eighty on one of the culprits when it comes to. bad trading practices when it comes to potential national security issues i think is puzzling and it's one of the reasons why there has been bipartisan al cry about this matter. is not seen china's demands yet. one demands could design about right you know that the u.s.
6:51 am
and the chinese have been involved in trade negotiations over the last couple of weeks and they're trying to ratchet down not only the rhetoric but this escalating series of tariffs that the u.s. is imposing on the chinese goods china in particular is imposing on u.s. agricultural products and i think what the president is trying to do is to figure out where he is in this negotiations and whether resolving the c.t.e. matter will help resolve these other trade matters but again it's anyone's guess as to how we got into this dispute because it was really started by the president's tweet a couple of days ago before the game president trumpeted on my show quite a bit on c.n.n. on this program and he also always ruled against china the china was beating us that in return he would change that all around has that changed well look i mean he has taken tough measures or was threatening tough measures against the chinese and that's how we are on the brink of what looks to be
6:52 am
a trade war and that's what makes this reversal on c.t.e. so curious because it's at such strong odds with not only the rhetoric that trump had during the campaign but really for decades he's been very concerned about the chinese and obviously part of this is north korea as well president trump has. said that he has a good relationship with the chinese president obviously having a good relationship is critical to reaching a settlement north korea so that's obviously a play here as well. the a lot of jobs in the united states of this right yeah i mean a large chinese telecommunications company there are many u.s. telecommunications companies technology companies that are suppliers to z.t. so there are jobs that are affected here but relative to the overall u.s. china trade balance it's small i mean what the bigger issue that's at stake right
6:53 am
now is the chinese threats to put tariffs on us poor u.s. soybeans and that will have a significant impact on farmers in the midwest many of whom are trump supporters. what is north korea's role in all is well look obviously getting the north korea situation resolved will require not only the cooperation of south korea japan but especially china which is north korea's strongest supporter at this period of time and i think what the president is trying to do is to ratchet down the trade pressures with the chinese in an effort to secure greater cooperation with the chinese with regard to north korea and again so there's many moving pieces in all of this and whether all these pieces can come together is it remains to be unseen at this point remains to be seen at this point now we hear from north korea the not going to discuss doing away with the nuclear weapons do you think the summits and
6:54 am
troubles you know i don't think we know at this point yet but i think people who have observed north korea over the decades have seen this familiar pattern where they seem to make movements towards peaceful resolution of disputes and then they back away at the last minute you know and what we have seen over the last couple of weeks even as the summit has gotten scheduled is that there still is a dispute between the north koreans and the united states in the south koreans about what it means to have denuclearization of the korean peninsula the likelihood that north korea would give up all of their nuclear weapons i think was not realistic you know and so again you know we're still a couple weeks away from the summit so i think a lot of things can happen between now and then but as kim jong un says that's almost a table that will not be discussed should trump go to the summit. you know look i i
6:55 am
i'm one of these people who police their value of talking but i think what kim walks at this point is the legitimacy to be seen as a world leader and i think having the u.s. president sitting down with him without having a clear path to moving forward on some of these contentious issues i think is very dangerous unless there is a genuine will genuine willingness on the part of the north koreans to resolve this denuclearization issue chris is always thank you for your time thank you for having me to summit or not to summit can the united states save the planned summer meeting between donald trump and kim jong un and what living through price of any will trump pay for acknowledging reimbursement to attorney michael cohen so the payoff to porn star stormy daniels lots to talk about with my political panel and let's get to it there jose aires demonio former deputy national press secretary of the

democratic party he joins us from washington and in new york amy holmes now co-host of the p.b.s. show in principle and a former staffer to seven majority leader bill frist and music conservative independent we'll talk midterm soon but first what's going to happen with the summit jose will there be a summit. look i certainly hope that there is one larry said this from the very beginning that. it was a mistake from for the president to call this a victory i hope that he happens because we all want. possible talks and we want to make sure that north korea eventually the nuclear crisis but you know we've got to make sure that the president and his team. talk to kim hopefully it happens in june and look in my know be a full denuclearization of the beginning we might have to find a middle ground or
6:57 am
a cop on the missiles and such other things so it's tricky north korea's tricky but i've said it from the very beginning it was a mistake for president come to call this a historic deal that was about to happen when in fact there is a lot more diplomacy that needs to happen any mr plump a.o.r. said they said when he came back from north korea that they're wonderful are cooperating on everything and then they say the nuclear then the destroy the nuclear weapons is off the table they will not discuss that what do you think is going to happen. well look i think planning a summit with kim jong un was always going to be risky business with my show in principle on p.b.s. we actually interviewed former secretary of defense don rumsfeld and asked him his thoughts and his you know any progress we can make is positive but again when you are trying to negotiate with the dictator of the hermit kingdom there's always going to be risk involved who and what is going to make the difference we need to
6:58 am
look at china we need to look at russia and what pressure they may might bring to bear to make this summit happen and of course there is the turret term d nuclear t.v. clearly. the north koreans versus what that means to the rest of the world community and that all needs to be sorted out but i would like to point out that there seems to be some good cop bad cop going on when it comes to aardman history sion and the way that we're trying to deal with kim jong un you remember donald trump president trying to tweets calling him calling kim jong un a little rocket man and that he's a maniac and he's a madman and at the time trump's critics saying you're to be starting world war three with those tweets well as it turns out kim jong un he understands the schoolyard he understands taught and that might have been kind of a way to break through to him and again play good cop bad cop to get him to that negotiating table there's still a lot of time between now and june cross that it doesn't blow up metaphorically so
6:59 am
to speak between now and then but any little bit of progress is a good thing and by the way mr rumsfeld will be on the show on politicking next week jose. to own the bad cop now he is saying i don't want to sit down if you're going to talk about denuclearization has the as the positions reversed. yeah look i think i think they have i think we have to remember too to amy's point that there are other players that are part of this negotiations including obviously south korea i really really hope that the summit happens come june i would advice the president to maybe lay off twitter for a little while because those conversations are very sensitive and we have known that the president likes to speak a little too much when it comes to using twitter and social media so it's something that happened but we've got to find. not
7:00 am
a middle ground per se but we've got to make sure that we maybe do something step by step we can do my way or the highway type of approach when it comes to north korea we'll be right back with more politicking.
