summit or no summit that's the question north korea's threat of a no show in singapore on june twelfth is a reminder to washington that north korea will not merely cave to american demands if there's going to be an agreement it's going to take time and patience. donald trump has newfound concern for protecting jobs in china what's behind the president's rhetoric on the controversial china company's e.t.e. we'll take a look at that on this edition of politic. politicking on larry king donald trump campaigned on making america great again and one crucial vote for workers in the u.s. rust belt with his relentless criticism of unfair trade deals with china made by

his predecessors but in a presidential tweet monday mr trump pledged to rescue controversial chinese telecom giant z t e saying the company's failure would cost too many jobs in china what's behind the president's decision let's talk about that with chris lu who served as white house cabinet secretary and deputy secretary of labor during the obama administration and he's now a city. in the lower center he joins us from washington d.c. chris on wednesday president trump tweeted that his reversal on the chinese companies e t e pertains to a logic trade deal. and the accused the washington post and c.n.n. are running full stories about his delusions was china what do you make of that not sure what to make of it and i think a lot of people in washington and around the world are scratching their head let's recall this was all started by

a tweet from the president himself saying that he was going to be working with president xi to resolve this is e.t.e. issue and it's a complicated one and has to do with a company a telecommunications companies e t a that was found to have violated the sanctions and having done business with iran and north korea and appropriately the united states took action against this company so it's curious that the president is getting involved in an foresman matter but there are a lot of implications here there's national security there is obviously trade issues and then there's north korea wrapped into all of this i think the president thinks that by resolving the c.t.e. issue which is an important one to the chinese government he can hope to untangle the other disputes that we're in with china but it remains to be seen whether he can do that or not is it confusing to you. it's incredibly confusing to me i mean obviously this is a president who pledged to make america great again he is appropriately taking

action against china for trade imbalances for their festive intellectual property and now to have done a one eighty on one of the culprits when it comes to. bad trading practices when it comes to potential national security issues i think is puzzling and it's one of the reasons why there has been bipartisan al cry about this matter. is not seen china's demands yet. what demands could what is that about right you know that the u.s. and the chinese have been involved in trade negotiations over the last couple of weeks and they're trying to ratchet down not only the rhetoric but this escalating series of tariffs that the u.s. is imposing on the chinese goods china in particular is imposing on us agricultural products and i think what the president is trying to do is to figure out where c.t.e. is in this negotiations and whether resolving the c.t.e.

matter will help resolve these other trade matters but again it's anyone's guess as to how we got into this dispute because it was really started by the president's tweet a couple of days ago before the game president trumpeted on my show quite a bit on c.n.n. on this program and he also always ruled against china the china was beating us that in return he would change that all around has that changed well look i mean he has taken tough measures are threatened tough measures against the chinese and that's how we are on the brink of what looks to be a trade war and that's what makes this reversal on c.t.e. so curious because it's at such strong odds with not only the rhetoric that trump had during the campaign but really for decades he's been very concerned about the chinese and obviously part of this is north korea as well president trump has.

said that he has a good relationship with the chinese president obviously having a good relationship is critical to reaching a settlement north korea so that's obviously a play here as well. the a lot of jobs in the united states of this right yeah i mean a large chinese telecommunications company there are many u.s. telecommunications companies technology companies that are suppliers to z.t. so there are jobs that are affected here but relative to the overall u.s. china trade balance it's small i mean what the bigger issue that's at stake right now is the chinese threats to put tariffs on us poor u.s. soybeans and that will have a significant impact on farmers in the midwest many of whom are trump supporters. what is north korea's role in all is well look obviously getting the north korea

situation resolved will require not only the cooperation of south korea japan but especially china which is north korea's strongest supporter at this period of time and i think what the president is trying to do is to ratchet down the trade pressures with the chinese in an effort to secure greater cooperation with the chinese with regard to north korea and again so there's many moving pieces in all of this and whether all these pieces can come together is it remains to be unseen at this point remains to be seen at this point now we hear from north korea the not going to discuss doing away with the nuclear weapons do you think to some it's in trouble you know i don't think we know at this point yet but i think people who have observed north korea over the decades have seen this familiar pattern where they seem to make movements towards peaceful resolution of disputes and then they back away at the last minute you know and what we have seen over the last couple of

weeks even as the summit has gotten scheduled is that there still is a dispute between the north koreans and the united states in the south koreans about what it means to have denuclearization of the korean peninsula the likelihood that north korea would give up all of their nuclear weapons i think was not realistic you know and so again you know we're still a couple weeks away from the summit so i think a lot of things can happen between now and then but as kim jong un says that's almost a table that will not be discussed should trump go to the summit. you know look i i i'm one of these people who police their value of talking but i think what campbell watts at this point is the legitimacy to be seen as a world leader and i think having the u.s. president sitting down with him without having a clear path to moving forward on some of these contentious issues i think is very

came back from north korea that they're wonderful are cooperating on everything and then they say the nuclear then the destroy the nuclear weapons is off the table they will not discuss that what do you think is going to happen. well look i think planning a summit with kim jong un was always going to be risky business with my show in principle on p.b.s. we actually interviewed former secretary of defense don rumsfeld and asked him his thoughts and his you know any progress we can make is positive but again when you are trying to negotiate with the dictator of the hermit kingdom there's always going to be risk involved who and what is going to make the difference we need to look at china we need to look at russia and what pressure they may might bring to bear to make this summit happen and of course there is the turret term nuclear as t.v. clearly. the north koreans versus what that means to the rest of the world community and that all needs to be sorted out but i would like to point out that there seems
