on tuesday that russia played its last friendly fixture before the world cup gets underway they drew one one with turkey in the russian capital it is the seventh game in a row that russia has failed to win and we asked people outside the web arena in moscow about their impressions of the match and what team russia what team russia should do i should say in order to buck the trend. i mean a festive mood the world cup will be a major celebration in the home stadiums in might never happen again but. the desire from the spectators fantastic great atmosphere great people just still your team could provide them with what these are worth of course both. first or second. but another member of our team is

the top stories here on the. pressure made calls to expel the u.s. ambassador to germany it comes after richard grinnell who's been in the post for roughly a month said that he's working to strengthen right wing movements in europe the german foreign ministry is awesome to clarify is our correspondent peter all of. at the beginning of the last century then american president theodore roosevelt said the u.s. diplomat should speak softly and carry a big stick while the current u.s. ambassador to germany he's opted more for shouting loudly and using that stick to smash diplomatic norms have a look at what he had to say to the right wing news site breitbart the right lot of conservatives throughout europe who have contacted me to say they're feeling there is a resurgence going on i absolutely want to empower other conservative throughout europe
10:44 am
other leaders while i'm but for the good now is announced himself as the all right cheerleader in chief in europe some people in berlin on top be that such a senior diplomatic figure is involving himself in the day to day running of european politics hiring king officials from me from me united states and maybe needs to be a little bit more careful i cannot imagine that i never never ever but i'm fifty years now and never ever had heard something similar over the last decade this do this casting this person should be so not of our country we don't do this in the us and they did do we shouldn't do that. this is horrible and the u.s. government this is a shame sorry for that but that's my opinion. he should have been more diplomatic and i believe that the right wing is not the right way to be pushing. it that's i
10:45 am
wouldn't call this incident and then john affairs but as a diplomat who should be more neutral politicians on the left say the ambassador who's only been in the job for a month should but he's bags and go home and bassett is a representative of the stays and not have political movements u.s. ambassador now however does not behave like a diplomat but more like a far right colonial officer we won't tolerate such behavior it's nice to have a hand here it is not only a breach of at. that it is also a violation of the vienna convention on diplomatic relations there is an article forty one in which it is very clearly stated that embassadors shall not interfere in internal affairs he has to go because he has broken too much porcelain in germany he has become a real hate figure and that is not a good platform for a us ambassador this isn't the first scandal that mr goodell's been involved in just a few days into his tenure he opes

a german businesses with these comments after washington pulled out of the iran nuclear deal as little trump said u.s. sanctions will target critical saxes of iran's economy german companies doing business in iran should wind down the peroration mediately ambassador grinnell's brush shoot from the hip style certainly seems to be from the same playbook as president donald trump but he may well find out the hard way that envoys are expected to act and behave in a certain way whether they're at home in d.c. or here in the german capital peter all over. the fifty sixth mission to the international space station is set to launch today in fact it will be about an hour and a half from now of course a launch from from the baikonur side in kazakhstan with the crew of three today. learning more about those getting ready for blast off.
10:47 am
this is the vehicle by which the latest crew members will be making their way to the international space station the true includes dr serrano on chancellor from nasa so the approach from roscoe's most and alexander guest from east to now for the american and the russian this will be their first trip into space but for gareth this is already his second time around and he'll be taking over as station commander on the i asked us the three have been training intensely for months together now and according to garrett twitter some of the exercises are less than pleasant. for the astronauts social media is a way to connect with the earth even from so far away. and. shared.

with everybody who's in. there on the on the turns. the tables and work with. the conversations. apparently actual antigravity is easier to handle than the training required in order to prepare for it during their six month stay on the station that's really will be carrying out over three hundred experiments ranging from topics on the effects of space on human bones to robotics to quantum physics and the hope is that the results of those tests will one day be able to benefit those of us way down here on earth but it's not all work and no play the world cup may be taking place on earth but the results will be followed in space as well or better riding on the outcome of the. new. recently the names of saints and was literally in the soup in the east in the

hello and welcome to crossfire for all things considered i'm peter lavelle faced with frustration and dismay from america's allies even members of the g.o.p. donald trump is sticking to his campaign promise to recast washington's trade relations with the world the reaction has been loud and swift are we on the verge of a global trade war. ross
10:53 am
talking a possible trade war i'm joined by my guest seamounts we're going to keep the conservative political commentator also in new york we have sarah hsu she's an associate professor of economics at the state university of new york and an exit or we have macleod he is head of research for gold money all right crosstalk rules in effect that means you can jump in anytime you want and i always appreciate you let me let me go to sarah first in new york on skype here. it's not hard to find the term trade war in the in the mainstream media of corporate media here are those overblown expectations because i've been looking at a lot of c.e.o.'s reporting on bloomberg and they're keeping their forecasts more or less the same their investment projections moving forward of course they're mindful of this but i sometimes wonder if it's being a bit overblown you know donald trump is a larger than life figure go ahead sara in new york. well right now we're not entirely sure what president trump disappointed you but that the senate he has
10:54 am
stated that he's going to implement fifty billion dollars in tariffs goods imported from china and this is going to result in retaliatory attacks from china china has promised to impose tit for tat terrorists on u.s. goods and this is going to strongly affect both the u.s. and china in terms of consumers and producers and in fact we're already seeing some of the blowback from that china has stopped purchasing soybeans from the u.s. due to the threats of potential trade war and they canceled about sixty three thousand metric tons of soybeans by mid april and they're purchasing a lot more from russia a lot more brazil and american farmers and michigan and iowa have already been hit really hard ok will you steve here i mean obviously there is already brought up the blowback here i mean i guess again if you're going to get into
10:55 am
a trade war new consciously get into a trade war you have to figure you got more punch to the other guy or other guy because the europeans are furious right now but the big very much coddled over the last seventy years and i'd like to talk about that i think there needs to be a redress of issues there that you say there is issue with china i think is separate but you know donald trump made a campaign promise and he's keeping it for better or worse steve absolutely and you know china and the european union canada mexico that this is separate they're separate issues really in china i think the ultimate goal is that order to bring down the three hundred fifty fifty billion dollar trade deficit that we have with china but also to get them to stop stealing our intellectual property and treat us more fairly in that respect so i think that's part of a grand scheme plus it's. political considerations beyond trade and economics that china plays into as far as canada and mexico especially canada there and the
10:56 am
european union there really ticked off that trump is using the pretext of national security to implement these tariffs on aluminum and seal in particular and that's taking them off no end trudeau has been very outspoken about that but i think when push comes to shove they need us more than we need them they know that trump is a grand master at bargaining in negotiations and this is all part of it i believe ok we'll get close steve will go back to that but i. think it on the whole you're right but i think the u.s. in the trumpet ministration is underestimating the options others have in the world are limited exit or i wish to react to some of the things we have said here because there's a very real possibility there could be a real trade war but i don't think we're there yet it depends on how everybody reacts ok in not just two words donald trump is good with words but see about actions let's go to alistair go ahead yeah i don't quite buy this story that.
10:57 am
you know the trump is really having a go at trying and all the rest of it i think it is part of a negotiating process and i think we have to bear in mind that there are two things going on in the background firstly we've got midterm elections coming up later this year you know twenty second. seems to be an ongoing battle within the white house between the established intelligence services it seems to me and donald trump and maybe that the military on his side and so there is a sort of turf war going on which actually is all about geopolitics and i think we've got to look at all this sort of talk about you know trade wars and all the rest of it in that context as we saw over north korea i mean couldn't get very very aggressive threatening to you know new rocket man and all the rest of it and then the next thing. you know they're talking and they're going to meet in singapore and then it's off and then it's on again i think of this story is going to run and run
10:58 am
and run now i'm not actually wildly pessimistic about what trump is is doing i think that there are talks going on which we're not privy to between america trying and also america and russia on trade now when it comes to the e.u. i think that's a slightly different thing because the e.u. is the one protectionist bloc yeah i think america is protections as well but i certainly don't see russia and china being protectionist and this idea that by putting up trade barriers or tariffs that you can reduce your trade deficit that to me is a complete misnomer because the trade deficit is comprised of the excess production of money within the economy and this is why you get the twin deficits effect and this is why if you get one country turning to save more than the other country you
10:59 am
will again tend to get a trade deficit so it's those are where the imbalances start from and i think that's the thing that really needs to be addressed and i just hope that behind all this rhetoric that either donald trump or his advisors actually understand this point and know when to. draw or if i'm glad you brought that up because you know i'm going to syria right now is just in the word steve said in answer just said here there are so many dimensions to all of this i'm worried about the law of unintended consequences because china isn't a european union there are very very different scenario you want to reach or you want a job and even after steve go ahead i think there is a strong misunderstanding about what a trade deficit is the trade deficit is not necessarily a bad deal. it's not a win or lose type the situation is. when you have a trade deficit that means that one country is purchasing more goods from the other country and they are from from the first country and it's not necessarily
11:00 am
a bad thing both sides have to have yet to gain a trade and it ends the issue with the with china is that they purchase less from the u.s. because the g.d.p. per capita there on average is about ten thousand dollars whereas in the u.s. it's fifty two thousand dollars so as americans we purchase we have a lot more purchasing power and we purchase a lot more from china than they do from us and we when we get good there's no losses there ok let me go about this given in new york. how much abuse is this political because we already heard them mention the mid terms being mentioned here is this something the donald trump needs to serve up to his base because as we pointed out here is based in the process could be damaged i mean it's a delicate balance isn't it go ahead steve it's a very delicate balance i mean you look at this state.
