tv   The Alex Salmond Show  RT  June 14, 2018 1:30pm-2:01pm EDT

1:30 pm
as tensions continue to mount since home secretary cited jabot escalated to ride with them as some kind of britain after he dejected their call for an independent inquiry into allegations of a slum of four bia within the conservative party i'm going to speak to tory p.l.r. cheek has also called a number ten to address this matter of grave concern but first over to alex that your tweets your messages and your e-mails first up this week is a message for c n n bob who says i'm glad there are still civilized people like you are male or like we're doing best on the show to raise the tone and then a few messages about citizenship building bogan says should be resurrecting the glasgow shipyards and those at newcastle click them see adds great show this week very interesting views and scholarship building after india once again become a world leader and more like bronson adds another great program the scots in the park area shipbuilding in scotland and the u.k. with mixed messages from ministers and from me quite interested me about the series
1:31 pm
we've done in shipbuilding is the absolute loyalty and commitment of the communities where we focused on those in belfast in the siphon on the clade to their ship of the terminations to keep them as part of the future but just part of our industrial heritage and finally this week from nelson care who says. we've been told the day despite the be the last the award invest well i'll tell you what nelson no need for a warm vest today and i back to the we just park mosque a senior conservative peer who served as an advisor to former prime minister david cameron has written to theresa me back and calls for an inquiry into some of for be other than the party describing it as a matter of grave concern to the many muslim members and supporters of the party these claims are backed up by former tory chairperson by an s y c he says it is a simmering anti muslim underbelly of islam the four bia within the party. alex now
1:32 pm
speaks to large chic. welcome to the they're like silent show you have a the first conservative muslim member of the house of lords recently you've written to the prime minister expressing your consent about as lama phobia within the party what provoked you to do that. unfortunately i believe that islamophobia does exist now within the conservative party have tried to deal with the matter quietly by writing to the present prime minister to the previous prime minister as well as have spoken to the c.c. h.q. . but unfortunately we have not received the right reply and no positive action has been taken i believe that the party should accept that there is a problem let's come off his high horse of the denial and i feel first thing the party
1:33 pm
should do is to accept that is a problem and that's then probably time we have an inquiry led by perhaps and it odd judge and a q.c. and not only interview parliamentarians but also interview member of the party from the ground because i think we need to establish the extent of the problem now. over the during the month of april you and me nineteen members of the conservative party or others expelled or suspended because of the unsavory remarks they made regarding the muslims last friday to conservative councilors were suspended because of the remarks we they made about the muslim it was a councillor in bonnet and a counsellor in suffolk so there is a problem i'm not saying the answer is less than. samen it and then having examined
1:34 pm
it there to see what the solutions are i kid about the party i'm not here to keep the party unnecessarily so it's not one of two instance you're talking about is you see a serious of instance in which haven't been in your estimation properly tackled by the conservative they have been tackled is like you know sort of saying to these people and other mean expelled or suspended as the prime minister or indeed the homesite three responded to your concerns directly my letter was sent last friday to the prime minister. went public only to the reason of then public on the it was prior to my letter there were a lot of articles in newspapers but so far i've had no response and them interview we passed the home say they seem to dismiss concerns from the muslim council but similar concerns to use were you surprised to see such
1:35 pm
a dismissive attitude to what you believe is a real problem i'm not here to criticize the home sector the is a thing like me but i think let's be realistic about it and i feel that let us then look at the issue look at the problem and find the answers you've been joined in your criticism by buying this vast see a form of sheer off the yes. do you not believe. given that i think that of perhaps just a dozen members lives a lot given the significance of you being the first muslim appointed priceless because of the party you would expect to see a reaction to that statement at the highest level while legacy of how the prime minister responds responses to my what i have said of it because active participation by the chairman of the party and i take it really that's what
1:36 pm
he needs it needs to kill. it needs the out so support from the association of various constituencies up and down the country you think of us a pollo that you see in terms of the party's unwillingness as yet. and what happened with the anti semitism complaints from the labor party where they seem to take the labor party a long time to get to grips with the issue are you frightened at the conservative party want the same experience over islamophobia i don't be against any form of discrimination i am patron of six organizations because i actively participate in interfaith dialogue i believe that there must be harmony we could all the community is reaching the end of a ramadan give a message for the muslim community worldwide i like the month of ramadan it enables me to display in myself is not very easy to fast in this country during the month
1:37 pm
of may and june but denying the food is good for the mind and good for the body fasting is one of the pillars of islam now we would be celebrating eat depending on the food siting of the moon is a great occasion is a cajun and families get together and they go to the mosque and say their prayers and they're hugging each other they're hugging each other because they're very very happy so i would like to wish all you have yours and don't forget there are over a billion muslims in this country in central asia and russia even though a lot of muslims even at one time desire actually told to becoming a muslim i don't know whether you know the story but he said we don't know when you found out that drinking alcohol is poor him it did there's a change his mind and decided remain a christian so alike to everybody in every part of. this global world of
1:38 pm
joy you're fostering i mean i enjoy good for the mind and of course enjoy the festival of heat so i like to wish everybody happy ramadan ramadan and of course happy either fit or when the soccer thank you very much thank you so much. about over who's been unfairly violinist who is the first female muslim member of the house of parliament. find a sit in welcome to alex i'm sure it's lovely to have you all now you are the first woman muslim here and the house of lords and it's been twenty years i think center for center the house of lords was like. thank you very much is a real you know a real pleasure to be here real good to see you if you'd asked me twenty years ago i think i would probably say exactly the same thing. it is it's a great platform for myself as an activist it's a great platform for continuing the work that i did for twenty years before i came
1:39 pm
into the house of lords but it's been challenging from day one savannah sit in you speak of challenges and of course you must mean that as a women and also as a muslim and parliament when you talk about that what you mean i think the challenges various aspects of the challenges have increased or have taken different shape over the years i think the very first time i came in i was the first i think youngest woman to have a baby so like the very first day i came in i hadn't seen my eight month old son for nearly twelve hours you remember the house used to sit very very long hours and i and my husband and my family brought him in to see me just for a few minutes and i was i did my motherly duty and fed him in the women's room it was in those days used to be called a mushroom lo behold i appear not to mention any newspapers that you know so i think that he asked me if i was a r. . and i appeared saying what on earth is this. woman has to offer to parliament so
1:40 pm
i think that pretty much set the tone and i think that you know muslim women like us who have opinions rule rooted in the community who are for islamophobia you know long before it was also racism in every name in which ever dies it has appeared i've been an advocate against. the war against iraq both myself and. jeremy we were in the front you know and the mocked so all those thing all the combination makes it very difficult. in this feeling this almost incumbent upon the women just to keep going yes but it doesn't mean to say it's difficult when you have moments when you wonder why you're doing all of this why you feel like you're fighting a world sometimes to no avail well i don't want to say that what are the choices that stopped a handful of us in the public arena i need labor party whose record is outstanding
1:41 pm
on empowerment of women really in the political process has been desperately miserable in all parts of the houses if you know within the political system a thousand enabled you know muslim women to get selected and said you know we're on the phone to this the easiest thing in the world to do but there hasn't been one more muslim woman added on our benches and i think at the moment tories have more muslim women then on up into senate i think in absolute tragedy and i still feel really sad about you know my political party that i have devoted my entire adult life since the age of sixteen that conned see itself to be as equal as it you know advocates for others i suppose whatever their view now might be having more women and that i mean it isn't just good for women it is good for society as a whole i think this is something we need to make more clear to people is the lack of understanding in that respect i think it's a must i mean surely we become. i mean you seem prejudiced really that we would ask
1:42 pm
anyone to accept as a political system with credibility if we don't have women i mean it just is just the lies in the belief i can't wait for my granddaughter to how generations to be frustrated desire today with a country in essentially as a muslim woman i think britain you will know this you've traveled like i have been to so many parts of the world it's one of the best places to be a muslim woman but not in the political platform not in the political arena not in the private sector not in any of the decision making the places where decision gets made about our lives very very inspiring by a city and you must inspire a lot of young women to come into the place i mean i don't want to preach about ramadan because we are inshallah almost at the end of it of course i spend most of my time in scotland so are faster at least an hour longer than in london about
1:43 pm
quarter past ten i but your thoughts and feelings about this should sound than have you enjoyed as much as i have yes ramadan kareem to everyone ramadan mubarak and. and challah even mubarak if the this comes out before and i wish everyone well please remember us and our family in your prayers and we should also say that amongst those non muslims amongst us of which there are many i find a real sense of understanding and respect for the fact that we are not eating and drinking eat and drink in front of us and i think that is part of that of our society here which we live and we should we should celebrate as we celebrate the opening of our fast i want to i have to say this that i have definitely witness many many more men and women asking about ramadan and what it's like and as a result it makes the twelve hours fifteen hours eighteen hours much boys are you aware of your. task against if you like to have you know when it comes. wishing you
1:44 pm
or your family your loved one. even a barbecue and or you of us thank you so much coming up after the break alex speaks to largeness here on that on his thoughts and reflections on the holy month of ramadan. and. i think it's trite to imagine that i say things just to be controversial you would not withstand the level of attacks of police harassment of detention of having my post of social services being called on my children my family being i'm just coming to jihad these plot to behead me and nov twenty seventh i don't believe you would withstand those levels of people trying to trying to silence you if you didn't believe what you said.
1:45 pm
and i'm delighted to be joined by lord ahmed the longest serving muslim member of the house of lords. twenty years since you were appointed as a fast moves limpia in my house of commons where i was for a few years you have to attend prayers to lose their of your seat which also struck me as very cool if you don't have anything like that and i so love but you know alex what we did on the first day that i entered the house of lords i asked for a prayer room so we have a prayer room with a balloon in facilities so as well as having my own little prayer room in my office there's a prayer room in the house of lords with some of our staff actually the household staff can go and pray as well and you know that only came about because the.
1:46 pm
authorities at the time when i entered said we don't have a spare room this is an old building we can create a prayer room and so i said well if i'm an equal member of the house of lords then when their lordships and the bishops are praying every day can i stand in the corner and dubai muslim prayer said no no we'll get we'll get you a little ruler and substantial progress was made the concept of of giving is central to the the holy month you're international aid was well known ramadan is a huge boost for the the funds of the various charities working in international aid actually muslims are the biggest donors for charity and if you look at this month there is anything like hundred million pounds for various causes from africa to palestine to rohingya communities to kashmir to syria and
1:47 pm
iraq and all those people in yemen and those who are suffering a lot i would have your message for the muslim communities worldwide. it's been a beautiful month where we had unity for the first. saudi arabia britain pakistan and many other countries started the ramadan on the same day i hope that we can keep this unity when it comes to our political issues read that it is palestine kashmir whether it is. syria or yemen we need to have that unity to resolve some of our difficult problems of armored frankly so much over to the. i'm joined by stephen a hug head a program of islamic relief and fact the us challenges and events coordinator welcome to the alexander you have now we are hopefully perhaps the last day of ramadan biffen expectations are not necessarily the case the eve might be to morrow inshallah i will take you five years to understand thought if i may come to you for
1:48 pm
us a bit about what ramadan is all about it and why we do what we did in this twenty one . all of the whole this month for muslims around the world and actually the literal meaning of ramadan is to the burning which means that the it's a symbol of the purification that we're going through saw the purification of ourselves so similarly that where you have gold it's purified through the process of burning and refining and purifying similarly we as a similar process where you're refining ourselves and you purifying ourselves and you have a stripping about all of our wants and desires to do to the best that we can and in the ways that god has asked us to do so observing from first that we can appreciate better study for motors that we can appreciate the value of water better. being even cruel to anyone or saying the wrong word to someone or rising to our own if someone's putting us all of those things that the things that we have to try and control during the month of ramadan and we also tend to take that month as
1:49 pm
a month of really exceeding in good deeds because we believe that the rewards are money fold. and ramadan so everything that we do we feel that there was so much more greater in this month so we kind of excel in trying to do good deeds. throughout this month i can probably fair to see that everybody probably knows somebody who is fasting during this month and the question there were so often asked is but no water no roof three d. there how do you respond to that i think it's one of those things where really you know there are people who are able bodied who are fit able can and we have proven that because i actually do this fast so it is a purification is among the purification and it's a spiritual premeditation but it's also a physical purification spoke to me if i can talk about some of the national programs that islamic relief undertakes there are many and varied not just in muslim countries but nothing beyond you did a lot in grain for for instance can you tell me a bit about what you have ongoing moment so obviously through ramadan our biggest program in this particular period will be feeding the poor and impoverished
1:50 pm
families all across the world so we do food pack distributions and what we will ensure is that those food packs that we distribute they will have a particular color if it values will make sure that they've got protein they've got sugar they've got farts they've got carbohydrates that people around the world to you know some of the poorest people that we're working with and we can empathize with them because they actually where we don't have access to food and water during ramadan these people actually don't have access to food and water most of the time i mean we've had out someone we've had to endure seattle and you know the seas and charities working across lots of different a.d.'s and where you can work together with the hugely beneficial but sadly i know you're in charge of events and challenges and let me know what the challenge is part of that means ok the challenge is to set up where there is a challenge element involved so a lot of people are quite keen to exert themselves and push themselves you know their comfort zone and they want to do it for a good reason for a good cause so for me that's the most valuable part of this whole thing but for
1:51 pm
the person who signs up they get to have an experience like no other self for example i'll take them to kilimanjaro to promote kilimanjaro all take them to everest and we'll climb up to a base camp and they're going to look the thing. a couple of years ago i mean i challenged myself as about the mountains have been my thing for a while so snowden but never said joe those are all things but then sometime in scotland i already said that this is amazing but like i've never cycle before ever i spent what after nearly had to cycle and then i did a cycle across under this era which is really exciting so we're hoping hoping to do another one in turkey some of the cyclocross turkey in our cyclists is really quite painful but the whole thing is such an experience and people will sponsor and hopefully hear about this was a life project where fundraising for and again is a long term sustainable project and awareness we think it's worth it it's hugely important but thank you both very much and inspiring to speak to both lovely to see women in power and taking over the board islamic make you always think it's doing
1:52 pm
and i wish you all inshallah when it comes to very very happy with your family and loved ones and i only wish we could be could spread the joy and enjoy i'm going to have a possible there are so many people who step in will be able to enjoy that david thank you very much indeed for all that you thank you into now over to alex tooth back in the studio and joined by the u.k. director of islamic relief and i'm not thank you to spin up and run welcome to the experiment show thank you so it must be a very big obviously of ramadan the holy month for all muslims but must be a very busy one for the u.k.'s leading muslim charity well i think most people know that ramadan is a month of fasting so they're probably aware that during daylight hours from sunrise to sunset we don't drink we don't eat as part of the conditions of the fast but has the water for you yeah i didn't want to have any close to me because i was going now just in case i reach for it we can make that mistake. but what's less well known is that it's also the month of giving so one of the five pillars is
1:53 pm
a cat it's a charitable contribution from your income is two and a half percent of your expendable income. for clothes are different reasons usually connected to the concept of greater reward most. leave contributing their charitable donations until the month of ramadan so we receive in the space of maybe five or six weeks half of our annual income so it's a very very busy period when i was first minister on the chemical one of the project proposals that came to us with was micro finance for women i think it was in pakistan it was which struck me as a very interesting concept. a lot behind in terms of the power that has to change or the lation ships and communities you know i think micro finance i mean as well publicised i mean interventions at a community level often with very small contributions i mean it's not about providing thousands of pounds to an individual so often loans of the equivalent of
1:54 pm
say fifty pounds one hundred pounds two hundred pounds which makes an incredible difference to say a widow who's trying to feed her kids trying to develop a business but just needs that extra cash to buy a few more utensils so that she can produce a bit more food for example and you find a distinguished career other than giving a set for the national support and aid say what would you say that slab it leaves. giving pointers a bit of hope or what is that the thing that you think it really does perhaps best of the range of charities i would say our reach i mean i would emphasize that we have that portfolio including development work but i have to say at the moment given the nature of the world how many conflicts there are special place like the middle east it's our reach is our ability to underline our humanitarian credentials to prove to the communities to sometimes the armed groups sometimes the local government that we're here for the right reasons we're here to support based on
1:55 pm
need and we spend a lot of time talking to communities so what that means is even after several months we're able to get access to some of the almost beyond reach communities and they're often complex and so we have incredibly brave. if aid workers men and women who often volunteers who do that community negotiation and in places like yemen syria iraq were often the only aid agency in a particular area but just to clarify your reach is not restricted to missile command not at all no i mean with faith inspired him i think would underline for reasons connected to charitable giving. that the community is very very generous in ramadan alone in the u.k. we raise over one hundred million within all the muslim charities so it's a very generous community so come of the largest natural disasters in recent years haiti the earthquake in haiti philippines earthquake the super typhoon in the philippines you probably remember it all muslim countries but we've had significant
1:56 pm
interventions they've been some of our biggest humanitarian programs over the last five years i think that goes to show that we perhaps you know now reached a stage where people are asking that question a bit less that they've seen this in different places of the planet they understand it's about our faith motivating i'm interventions but ultimately we're blind to issues of you know race and color and creed etc as i've said to other agencies and international development set a more perky available i don't have to give you a fifty pence but what i can do is give you the the alex i would quit that's fantastic if you know the drill in this this is a gallup for a loving cup. and normally normally it's whisky goes into the love income but but you know other drinks of the film are about a member a blues a diode in partial to amber one from a dollars over the us i have been blue in my shoulder. and remember you alex thank you very much thank you for the view thank you. field of ramadan is the holiest month in the islamic calendar where muslims all around the world will fast from
1:57 pm
sunrise to sunset and the end of every fast for sure food for the family and friends and especially the poor it's also a month for giving to charity. the end of ramadan and look forward to the celebrations we have course for always remember those who are less well off and facing many more challenges than we do here in this country and our special program on holocaust memorial day we have education was crucial to creating the understanding well let us to tackle the the evil of anti semitism in this program we've heard from lord shape calling for an inquiry in the conservative party into the growing problem of islam phobia i'm not sure he said the education was crucial and things shouldn't be treated as isolated instance though to serve the party haven't responded to our request for them to give us a statement but nonetheless a prime minister would be well advised to listen to the senior conservative muslim peer he does know what he's talking about. so if not all of us here and alex i mean
