welcome back to the program our team is middle east correspondent paula sleepier has been denied entry to ukraine she was stopped at the border while hiding to a human rights conference on media freedom here's what she told us shortly after arriving in in badly. flights here from kiev four were pretty uneventful this of course is after spending around eight hours today in the departure lounge at the airport in kiev i arrived there in the early morning and initially my passport was flagged at customs they then took me to a side room where they kept me for around an hour and a half without giving me any kind of explanation eventually when i asked what was happening they called me and they sat me down and they said that i had been found to not be allowed to enter the country they wouldn't give any kind of reason they said it was an order that came from above and they are me to sign something that confirmed that i understood that i was not being allowed into the country that i was being banned for the next five years and as i say no explanation given after

that i was taken to the departure lounge to be honest the treatment by the border police was ok there wasn't any kind of harassment or talking to me badly in any way and they left me to my own devices a few hours later they came with my passport and then i was allowed to board the plane i was attending a conference in kiev that is organized by the organization for security and cooperation in europe the o.e.c.d. and it's a conference that was devoted to media and media freedom in ukraine and that's the irony of the whole situation is that i was meant to participate in the conference to talk about all the the problems we as journalists face particularly in conflict zones and the very authoritative we're holding that conference refused me entry so it says a lot about the way the ukrainian authorities view press freedom not allowing journalists to attend a conference on press freedom the last time i was in kiev was back in two thousand and fifteen at that time i was reporting on fires that have broken our channel and

and fraud take us through this how did this all come about and what were the central bankers what was their ultimate goal here. well this goes back decades really but in the last decade since the financial crisis we had a situation where the major central banks in the world particular federal reserve were completely asleep at their job of being the regulatory body that is supposed to ensure the stability of financial system that is to say to secure some semblance of lack of crime of lack of broad of normalcy from the perspective of the rules that govern the types of things that banks can and cannot do and in the run up to the financial crisis of two thousand and eight as we found out the biggest banks in particular in the united states were manufacturing trillions of dollars of will now call them toxic assets would basically scooping up subprime loans and rejiggering

them into many many multiples more of toxic assets they then sold out the to the world and lent to investors and other financial institutions and cities and countries and so forth to buy more of for their own arsenals and as a result this massive amount of leverage of faulty of fraudulent assets proliferated the world when that all came to light and fell apart the banks got scared they came to the federal reserve and different governments throughout the world and said look if you do not subsidize us if you do not sustain us we're all going to basically close the former treasury secretary at the time hank paulson who had been the c.e.o. and chairman of goldman sachs when i was there and then moved on to the position of head treasury secretary under george bush at the time was on his knees in front of congress woman and speaker of the house nancy pelosi saying if you don't congress help the banks they will cease to give money to people so there's lots of fear all around in the result of which was the federal reserve turning around and saying ok we're going to bring rates to zero that will render the availability and the level

of payment of money to banks the federal reserve's rate at zero so they will be able to receive through access to us whatever they need to. sustain themselves throughout this emergency period we now know that emergency has gone on for a decade when i say collusion in this book what's happened over that decade as well is that it wasn't enough for the federal reserve to manufacture four and a half trillion dollars of money to buy assets and government securities from these banks in order to liquefy them but they required other g seven central banks around the world the european central bank the bank of japan the bank of england to basically create a whole subsidy for the entire financial system or the most elite banks of that system in order to be able to first sustain the u.s. banks and then sustain their partner banks banks are codependent like torture bank and so forth that's the system that we have now artificial subsidies of the financial institutions at the core of the financial crisis by the central banks

colluded upon by the central banks that have distorted or manipulated markets and savings rates for people throughout the world so you gave a lot there but i want to dig into it and thank you for your patience with some of these questions so it was one the quantitative easing essentially zero interest rates but you alluded to it but just to be clear for our viewers this is after the seven hundred billion dollar bailout so that they were they were backed up so they made these irresponsible bets in part on these things that used to deal with the goldman sachs these c.v.s. is these credit default swaps based upon home mortgages that were some were good some were bad they mixed them up they spread them around and one of the problems that the financial crisis inquiry commission noted was that the valuation of those c.d.'s is was in the eye of the ball holders so nobody trades with bart and you put what is good for your books and i put what's good for my book and is that really

when you say that it was propped up not after the crisis but before the crisis is that part and parcel to the problem normally. well it was because credit derivatives the credit default swaps studios collateralized debt obligations which had credit default swaps attached and these are all bets on the ability of whatever's being better upon to repay their debt to repay interest along the way to repaying debt that's what a credit default swap is and so the idea of what they're valued at really depends upon what market participants are willing to pay if someone believes the market participant or a bank believes that there is credit worthiness behalf of something underlying a credit default swap and that that company will repay that mortgage will repay honor their debt honor their interest payments then then that is one thing that has a higher value if they believe that there's more risk in that repayment coming that

value is lower and what happened going into the financial crisis with all of these instruments floating around is that these values were largely floating around as well so one bank could say all right will my credit default swap my credit risk is mitigated because for example i have an insurance company backing my credit risk which was one of the other players in this whole saga some can say it's not and so forth so when i wrote actually after i left goldman sachs my first book other people's money the corporate mugging of america i specifically said that it would be credit default swaps it would be c.e.o.'s because they are so hard to price because the fluctuations of value are so great depending on as you mention the eye of the beholder that these can cause without proper regulation a massive ripple in a massive destabilization in a crisis in the financial system which is ultimately what happened you know me we're out of time but i love to have you back to talk about whether or not given

journalists face particularly in conflict zones and the very authoritative we're holding that conference refused me entry so it says a lot. about the way the ukrainian authorities view press freedom not allowing journalists to attend a conference on press freedom the last time i was in kiev was back in two thousand and fifteen at that time i was reporting on fires that have broken our channel and i started receiving death threats on my twitter feed and an online witch hunt was instigated against me in the decision was taken for me to to leave as soon as possible all of this is particularly concerning because of course it sheds light on a very real situation in terms of press freedom media chorale a-t. that is happening right now in kiev they was a response from the o.e.c.d. they said that they were greeted what had happened but of course saying one thing and having a conference on media freedom while you have myself and another russian journalist who was also prevented from entering the country while we were in the terminal and

a conference in kiev that is organized by the organization for security and cooperation in europe the o.e.c.d. and it's a conference that was devoted to media pirelli t.v. and media freedom in ukraine and that's the irony of the whole situation is that i was meant to participate in the conference to talk about all the the problems we as journalists face particularly in conflict zones and the vote. thora he said we're holding that conference refused me entry so it says a lot about the way the ukrainian authorities view press freedom not allowing journalists to attend a conference on press freedom the last time i was in kiev was back in two thousand and fifteen at that time i was reporting on fires that have broken out channel and i started receiving death threats on my twitter feed and an online witch hunt was instigated against me in the decision was taken for me to to leave as soon as possible all of this is particularly concerning because of course it sheds light on

the city of pittsburgh isn't mourning and protests following the shooting death of teenager and juan rose the second has now joined the long and tragic list of unarmed black citizens shot dead by u.s. police officers in a story that has become all too familiar since the police shooting death of michael brown in ferguson missouri back in two thousand and fourteen and one rose was shot three times last tuesday june nineteenth as he along with another passenger ran from a parked car while police arrested and handcuffed the driver police pulled the vehicle over because it had matched the description of a vehicle allegedly used in a drive by shooting earlier that day now just over a week later as rose is laid to rest protesters and mourners are calling for justice and answers from the city of pittsburgh and joining us now is destin gibson one of those protesters and organizers who are seeking justice for anton rose and his family thank you for joining us. dustin i want to start by

asking you you know what what are the. request the demands of whatever was called of the people out there protesting in pittsburgh what do they want one of they feel what will bring justice in this in this tragic death. well i'm not sure what well will actually bring justice nor my quick to answer that but i do know that not only do the community want the officer charged but convicted as well. one of the things about the officer who pulled the trigger on and on michael rosol the is currently on administrative leave as a resident of the city as pittsburgh what has bothered you most about the handling of this case by authorities including the allegheny county district attorney's fees the polish you have some opinions about that. i am a resident a city official. the murder happened in

a borough right outside of the city called east is very. but i think the most. the most depressing fact about it is if i were to shoot a seventeen year old on video as he runs away from me three times in the back i would most likely be in jail or dead now the officer is at home or in another location with his family. and he's not held accountable for the things that the rest of us would be. and that's what gets to really the heart of this kind of thing is the fact that you do have this on the countability all the time you've got someone shot one of the by running away from them no weapon whatsoever and shoots somebody dead cold but yet still nothing no charges that we've seen or anything like that is that what really gets to the heart of this issue for the people of pittsburgh. yes and this is unfortunately not the first time this is happened we've had. a number of police killings in recent years bruce kelly jr was

murdered in january of two thousand and sixteen by port authority police christopher tompkins was shot through his front door after he called the police for robbery just last year by the pittsburgh police so this is happened numerous times and we haven't seen charges or conviction on any of the officers that have done this what i think is happening right now is the city is rising up in a way that we haven't seen and the support is coming from every direction until justice is served for and it's one of roses and. what do you think. what do you think. is is happening that's new because there is a sort of watershed moment there's a tipping point where a community says enough is enough where you know one one group of people or finally just say we have to do something is that what do you think it is because you see so

many of these week after week and month after month it's been a very long list as long as we've been doing this show some six hundred episodes says day one this has been one of the major stories and it keeps happening and we're angry because it shouldn't like there's no reason someone shouldn't be held accountable what do you think it is about the enron rose case that just takes it to a level where finally this is a not and serious action to happen. i think this has a lot to do with. the person that antwan rose was. in attendance at the funeral folks the way they talked about him talking about a seventeen year old student i'd like to ski and like to snowboard and smiled all the time and volunteered at a free store and was an honor student and was a poet and all of these things i think when people see images of him and hear

stories about him they see the kids that are doing great things in their communities they see their sons and their nephews and their brothers and i think that is motivated and inspired people in a way that i haven't seen before and it's not just activist organizers or community builders at these protests and rallies it's grandmothers in trans women of color and white people and young black people young black people leading these efforts it is people that are the most marginalized within our communities from the homewards to the manchester's to the the braddock's it is every day people that are. not only putting their bodies on the line but also risking a lot to speak out against this in a way that we know harassment might come from law enforcement because it has in the past but people are putting that to the side because what ants one represents is so important not only to us in the city of pittsburgh but to the country at large we

absolutely believe that if this is to happen to and one and we do nothing about it that this will happen again so this fight is for justice for and so on and it's also to prevent this from happening in the future that's the next thing i want to ask you about is the future you know you say this is the tipping point it's really moving that you sort of got people out there you'd never expect you know out there marching and protesting let their voices be heard what is the next stage where does this go what what what happens next in this in this in this movement to find justice. well i think what happens next is we're all taking. directives from what the family wants. they are the ones that are in the front of this they are the ones that are carrying the heavy load they are the ones that are forced to become activist and speak out against this in a way that they never ask for so we take directive from them so as of right now the only thing that we want is justice charges and convictions brought against the

officers for the larger picture we have a district attorney in stevenson pollard that's been there for twenty years that has locked up entire communities of black and brown people and has never convicted a officer or held him accountable on his own volition so we're looking to rearrange that if that needs to be rearranged by finding somebody else that can get the job done and actually prosecute the people that are committing murders pitch very busy interesting place in the sense that the majority of the murders are young black people and ninety seven percent of the unsolved murders are black victims. so this is not just a thing about police violence this is violence in general starting with things like the infant mortality rate for black children in pittsburgh is the highest in the country this is a. systematic solution to the problem in so a house the happen every local store one level that that happens and we have

a couple minutes left and i don't want to run out of time for this is that a lot of your work involves the injustices perpetrated by law enforcement and their minions of many you know d.a.'s and everybody else that's all part of that system against the mentally and physically disabled and we again we see stories like this and about you know someone who is called someone who is suicidal or someone who is of sad or you know in this day and age i mean one rose normal p.t.s.d. would have made anyone run away from that car you know in truth that was an emotional reaction of fight or flight he ran because we know he's going to get shot if he stays there and he gets out if you say is there so i think there's a whole mental health issue can you tell me a little bit at a couple minutes last about your work with the disabled and how that relationship with physical and mental disability and law enforcement is is so intertwined. yeah

so the area in which ants one lived in and went to school in was woodland hills school district a place that has been riddled with gun violence over the past few years at least ten of his cold learners over the past few years have been murdered in this area so the type of impact that has on children is great what we know is. people that live in low income communities specifically black communities here in pittsburgh are experiencing p.t.s.d. or see p.t.s.d. meaning that it's complex and they're still in it and we also know when it comes to police killings that it is. intertwined between abeles them and racism the people that are most impacted by karsh or violence whether it be the people that are actually incarcerated or the police people that are at the brunt of police brutality and violence are disabled people of color we are in a state of pennsylvania where seven out of ten women that are incarcerated have

some form of documented mental illness i would argue that the kids that i work with that the at the young jail are one hundred percent disabled due to the environments in which they're in which are violent that's a great point you bring up because not a lot of people pay attention to that model lot of people say oh wait a minute also the environment it's not you know we have kind of the classic ideas of mental disability but we keep p.t.s.d. we kind of push that away so you grow up or you grow up under a cloud whatever you call it but that doesn't have a direct effect on your mental health ability to do things does it i really want to thank you for coming on today i got only about thirty seconds left anything else you'd like to say. no i just like to thank you for having me on this is unfortunate that this continues to happen folks should know that this is not the first time it's happened in pittsburgh but what we're witnessing now is an uprising of people in a way that i don't think we have ever seen in this region so this should carry us

think kind of doraine that it speaks to how people want to kind of see ghosts you know donald trump refers to this as a witch on the phrase witch hunt became because there were no which is. gotten five plea agreements he's gotten another dozen or more people indicted these are not witches these are real humans who are pled guilty to crimes so sorry if somehow or other ok because richard roth had. to be honest here all of these crimes have nothing to do with russia number one ok at least the russian government here let me let me and i want to agree with lionel and richard here because richard said something that's very interesting you see what you want to in this both sides see exactly what they want and we've been watching this go on for two years but doug i think one of the things that i would contest with richard is that we don't really know when this counter intelligence operation started because the players that are

big that's the big nothing burger as for he said he got it all of the day but for. anyone that's watch this program for the last two years knows that i think that this is. a you know delusion this whole thing but what i'm really more interested in because of looking for collusion they have actually found what i believe is true corruption in the f.b.i. and i think that's what's really interesting here richard i mean you have major figures over the last few months that have left the f.b.i. and it's all because of these investigations here i mean you are do you support a thorough investigation i'm not saying i don't like special prosecutors but i think there needs to be a cleaning of house here there's just too much that has come out with the i.g. report that really casts a lot of doubt on the bias of the upper echelon of the f.b.i. and i think the american people have a right to know go ahead richard so i think a lot of these f.b.i. officials who have left left because they are nauseated the donald. runs the

government and looks like he wants to run the f.b.i. like a mob boss look his hero was roy cohn who is basically a lawyer to the mob and roy cohn with a fixer he thinks the justice department and the f.b.i. should act as his personal fixers and when they don't he's offended he's offended that komi wouldn't drop in which he asked to be what about mike flynn and one final thing i mean one one point you know doug doug said well the reason that struck didn't put the word out about trump being subject to a counterintelligence investigation about russian collusion is that nobody interested would be interested trouble won by a handful of votes in michigan and wisconsin do you think that really nobody in those states would just kind of go whatever in the russians but forget it no heck know that if they really wanted to take down he would have put the word out and he didn't that's what makes this whole thing so ridiculous this notion of strong somehow trying to take out well it really could have any did it can't but we don't

a sense of paralysis they're not so this is not supposed to happen for the longest time you know we've used the term deep state or intel state or police state or whatever you want to call it whatever you want to call this government within the government but for years they've they've run this with impunity and by the way this is not the frontline the rank and file f.b.i. agents are out there investigating bank robberies and federal fishing violations those are great people same thing for the d.o.j. but this is the what the seventh floor of this notorious group they don't know what's happening they went into this cock sure ready to go they thought they were locked and loaded that they were going to somehow bring apart or cause the dissolution of the house of trouble not one think about this not. saying has ever materialized so far and by the way let me add on to this the whole russian collusion thing apparently the the extent of the evil machinations of the russian enterprise is facebook ads so so far everything has collapsed and there has been

a sense of paralysis and what i suspect is they told everybody nobody move nobody weak use this will somehow go away this cannot be happening it's learned helplessness it's power rally as this but something tells me he'll be getting his marching orders but without this say so well it seems to me and we go to richard here this is the ultimate boomerang effect here we wouldn't found out about any of these things unless they believed that there was collusion with the russians i mean it's all coming back to them in all the characters who are involved and i want to stay with the rod rosenstein richard i mean how do you explain that i mean he's in the middle of all of these things he signed one of these five warrants against carter page i mean him and he wrote the recommendation letter to fire komi i mean he's got his finger tips on all kinds of things are you should he be a someone that's calling the shots go ahead. so rosenstein yes he did

sign the pfizer warrant as did predecessors of his and it was approved by one judge after another after another after another all of whom were republican appointees so this notion that somehow this is this democratic. and i don't there's only conflict if you brought up the dossier you brought up the dossier and they were less than transparent on who paid for the dossier and who put it together so you know you know we can mince our words right here but my point is it's take the city i mean he's involved in many elements of this should he recused himself because i don't think he's an honest broker go ahead richard. he is really only involved in one element and that as a fact witness which is what komi said to him and what the predicate was for that letter that he sent to the president write this investigation peter is going to look at ways in which the russians tried to affect the outcome of this campaign and

money laundering and bank fraud and any number of different things in that little piece of rosenstein there's going to be next to nothing ok i think the the russian meddling in the in two thousand and sixteen election is going to be a very very thin volume of anything because we were saying you know ok but richard after two years and after that that orgy of leaks at the beginning of his the administration you'd think someone would cough it up by now but they haven't here ok well i here's what i think though i think what to miraculous i'll let me get one find of which are i think it's miraculous frankly that the molar team does not leak and these thirteen and angry democrats that tom talks about donald trump contributed more to democrats than all of those thirteen working from all are put together so it's his way of deflecting i get it but it's a miraculous that you list sections and jared and roger all these people that for god their meetings are just discussions with the russians it's a little bit more than a coincidence don't you think. and i believe actually roger stone and then he is

meeting with this really weird character that wants trump's money which i mean if this guy's a paid f.b.i. he informant that was recruited from the cia then they have some real personnel problems over at the f.b.i. believe me ok fine that's an interesting point i want to go back to christopher way in sessions because i think this is also quite fascinating here here we have oversight committees in congress you know i mean they're going to put out subpoenas they're going to put people in contempt i mean they want the frickin documents ok and they are very slow walking in. how do you explain that because and i say this in a very colloquial way and not in a very narrow way this is the trumpet d.o.j. this is the trump f.b.i. how do you explain it go ahead. that are slow walking because they know the whole world can change in twenty four hours and they don't want this information out you can see why rod rosenstein why he threatened to that was chilling to me threatened

his own oversight committee what has happened to the u.s. constitution i just want to revert back to this russian it's so incredible to me you're telling me two hundred thousand dollars worth of facebook ads through the election to hillary clinton and a five hundred thousand dollars speech to bill clinton that people could see on you tube free of charge didn't throw the election but i think rod rosenstein it's chilling threat to the oversight committee should scare us a little bit about what's happening to this post constitutional drift we're in in this country i think it's ok and i'm really glad you brought that up and i think all of you know we all of us have our own opinion and some of them are very at odds but i think you mention a point that i think we all should really care about not to go back to richard on this because i'm really well and i've been saying this for a very long time i'm very worried about institutional erosion here and the

confidence the public has in those institutions and as things stand right now richard it doesn't look great for the f.b.i. in what we have learned so far and we're going to learn a whole lot more if and i love how the f.b.i. loves the use the word candor for telling the truth i hope peter straub will be will give candor when he's talking because i think he's got a lot to explain i mean i went through a political article i mean all of the things he said i mean of course it can be bluster impress his girlfriend but you know there's a lot in my gut there's a lot of substance there go ahead richard about the institutions we need to protect them. i mean and struck said bad things about bernie sanders about her about chelsea clinton so somehow or other obviously we're putting the spotlight on what he said about trump look i think that that james komi because the average president of the i am glad you brought her down to the f.b.i. only twice he twice by giving that press conference which he had no authority to do

absent the issue of that letter absolutely at the end of october so i think he has damaged the f.b.i. but these people who work in the justice department swear allegiance to the united states of america not allegiance to donald trump you know doug says with the trump justice department these people owe allegiance to the united states of america to us not to trump and therefore they cannot turn a blind eye can the problem with what the house is trying to do is they're trying to get documents so they can walk over to the white house and say donald this is what they have against you because they're full but rich not right but richard at the same time in the i.g. report you have one of these high officials in the f.b.i. making reference to hillary clinton as president so i mean you can every thing you just said can be turned on its head ok they were referring to her as the president before the election ok i want to get equal time right in the world did they not disclose this counter-intelligence and that's the that's the thing that's so what you know they originally thought it wanted to elect her and that if we if they

really cared about the country and not the candidate or against a candidate they should have informed the tram campaign that some of your folks are talking to people who were worried about i think that could have been done that would have been their job ok that would have been the protocol but they didn't do it again that cast suspicion lionel you remarkably quiet jump in. oh i don't interrupt this but i hate to to dispel all this hate it with all due respect to richard i'm sure you're a fine fine man that is a slave to the facts and he said good man is my friend so don't play here. and these are our friends and he's a friend of truth withstanding peter this is about one thing only it's not about just it's not about the f.b.i. said about anything it's. trade of tromp they hate trump they hate it's the opposite of a fetish it's trends from

the u.s. but internationally look at europe look at asia look at parts of latin america makes it very difficult for businesses to succeed it's ultimately achievable it's just it's going to be a hard process months at a point right so rightfully has said that they work with governments and they have a great solution and on ramp there are industry players that have chosen not to work with governments. who have chosen to not interact with regulators or to interact in the least possible way with regulators or to go jurisdiction shopping so they'll go to countries where they know their money is welcome their business is welcome and so i think there's a dynamic evolving i think that ultimately the regulators in my view in are not really going to be helpful in the development of this industry and in this strategic way and that this is a self regulating new asset class that we don't need those regulators and so.

a lot of time thinking about is the institutionalization of the space and that is the large banks the hedge funds the sovereign wealth funds of the world now beginning to move capital into this new asset class and a lot of the work we do a client base is building not just the products the qualified custodian the reliable exchanges the prime brokerages but also having the right regulatory licenses so that capital can move into the space so what i see coming from banks right now is maybe a little bit of ever being taken out of the room on these private block chain instances that may still develop but are not going to revolutionize their work overnight but beginning to look at crypto as a new asset class that ultimately their clients want exposure to yeah i think there is that it's come from the ground up it's clients that have been asking for exposure to this asset class and the banks have kind of been dragged into it jamie diamond two thousand seventeen september call it a fraud and then two weeks ago just hired a head of strategy and that's happened over and over again
