this is our international ok move on the nato military alliance is set to meet later today but tensions between the u.s. and other members of already become apparent donald trump lambasted states for failing to contribute enough to the alliance while nato secretary general said they shouldn't pay up just a american peter all of us got the story as nato leaders come together in brussels the alliance seems more disunited then ever to start with the most influential member of the block is it odds with its partners and the money. they want to tell you get a set of bills united states. for years nato has been a club where the majority of members don't pay what they should including key allies and europe's biggest economies like germany which is way off the pace in fact against altenburg the nato secretary general has said that only seven out of
7:37 am
the twenty seven year a p a nato members living up to the two percent of g.d.p. that they're supposed to contribute it was agreed on to expect eight allies to spend at least two percent of g.d.p. on defense to see it more over european partners a considering a defense force of their own outside of nato on the beginning of the next europe must have. a common defense budget and a common doctrine. then there's what to do about russia chancellor angela merkel wants to focus more on what she sees as a threat posed by moscow while donald trump wants closer ties with russia he's heading off for a meeting with vladimir putin just a week. after sitting down with these nato buddies that's bigger that's true and we have to focus more on defending the alliance and in order to do that we have to make necessary arrangements for example through
7:38 am
a presence in central and eastern european countries you know what. the nato secretary general it seems isn't too concerned about disagreements between leaders believe so. what we call the dual track approach to russia combining defense with dialogue we don't want a new cold war we don't want on your show is russia so a neighbor russia state to state but that can't gloss over some fairly naked barbs coming from europe directed at the united states the president trump america does not target. than europe india america appreciate your allies after all you don't have that many with so much dissatisfaction within the alliance it does beg the question just how relevant is nato in today's world i don't think
7:39 am
that nato was ever designed to ensure global security i don't think that was ever part of the years original mission but once the cold war ended nato has been seeking its mission ever since there was nothing left to do really after the end of the cold war think there is more of a feeling of threat again that nato led by the us is increasing the tensions not beating to more security. the highly anticipated meeting between donald trump and president putin next monday in helsinki seems to have put the media rumor mill into overdrive some parts were speculating that the u.s. president's a soviet spy were against it takes a close look at that claim that. it was all so free range so crazy stuff of conspiracy theorists and pinfall hads but they've done it they've really done it and they went right in at the deep end as trump arranges to meet face to face and
7:40 am
privately with vladimir putin later this month it would be dangerous not to consider the possibility the summit is less a negotiation between two heads of state than a meeting between a russian intelligence assets and his handler it's a whole study with charts and spread sheets and insane conspiracy theories and new york magazine isn't alone more and more media outlets are coming out into the open and saying trump is a russian agent despite the fact that he's starved almost his entire administration with anti russian hawks but the dissent to this new low was gradual take the washington post forty six years ago it brought down a president in the watergate scandal using only quality journalism in two thousand and sixteen it promoted media which aren't. proper nuts
7:41 am
monitoring report identifies more than two hundred websites as routine peddlers of russian propaganda during the election season we've combined audiences of at least fifteen million americans at some point bashing russia trumped the truth turns out citing shadowy organizations that have come out of nowhere in an article or fake news wasn't the best idea media and readers are like ripped into the washington post for that one but it was a turning point take m.s.n. b.c. who rachel maddow leftist she's developed something of an obsession over russia in recent years seeing putin's hand everywhere everywhere in russia russian russia russia russian russia russia russia of whether or not russia had help whether they had confederates inside the truck campaign when they launched this attack and one very big thing that was definitely off about that meeting if you
7:42 am
take that train across that bridge from north korea where you end up in is russia and every day and every day i'd leave my show and i think we're going to be talking about something else but every day over the course of the news cycle a new piece of it falls in place rachel maddow pedals to a specific audience an audience that wants the hear what it believes in lot what to believe and you can say that of any audience though people only listen to what they want to hear less news more show. his shoe is a piece of sleight of hand presented as a cable news show it is t.v. entertainment it is financed it permits liberals to enjoy themselves during was maybe the most tellingly and enjoyable town the political life or take the new york times which last year claimed that trump associates were in close contact with russian agents jury in the election only to be debunked by none other than former
7:43 am
f.b.i. ahead james komi the challenge that i'm not picking on reporters about writing stories about classified information is the people talking about it often don't really know what's going on and those of us who actually know what's going on and are talking about it quality journalism doesn't sell any more neither does neutrality or even common sense the numbers prove it last september the washington post crossed the one million subscribers mark the new york times made more than a billion dollars in total subscription revenue and rachel maddow became the most watched who in march society is fracturing and there is little common ground to be found it's a national departure from reality that is being helped along by truth journalism in tao with the truth president. time is the end of the

world ny with midterm elections in the us too in november it seems some are taking a doomsday approach when trying to appeal to voters kalib opens got the story the upcoming midterm congressional elections are certainly a crucial political of that but there's way more to it than you think according to nancy pelosi the minority leader on capitol hill civilization as we know today is a tourist can the selection we have to win we have to win civilization at risk goodness that sounds quite serious now she's not the only one to think of the upcoming elections or existential importance and no less if you one of these folks who is watching cable news you cocktail parties with your friends and you sing civilization is collapsing and you're nervous and worried but that is not what you personally do time energy and money than either you don't actually think civilization is collapsing or you're not pushing yourself hard enough and i would push harder the time for diagnosis is over it is cancer midterms are america's last

chance at remission register to vote we can beat these disease now filmmaker michael moore is urging the liberal rank and file to see is the moment what are we willing to commit to what would you give your life for what would you be willing to do to actually put yourself on the line for that moment is now we are going to lose our democracy if we haven't already we have no choice my friends we all have to rise up so is the future of human civilization really at risk at the november polling place we decided to ask people here in new york city i would say oh yes possibly the fate of american civilization at stake i think set out. civilization this well i don't know i think it's a little over the top now not at all they were said kim jong un was going to blow up the world a couple i know how many months ago there are hyper ventilating they do this all the time. why would nancy pelosi say that. now it's hard to tell if ordinary

greetings and salutations. when i was just a wee small boy around the tender age of eight years old my father jesse ventura acted in a film called the running man starring arnold schwarzenegger whose plot centered on a futuristic game show where federal prisoners were forced to fight for their lives and ultimately their freedom while television executives and politicians quell dissent around the country and greedily gobbled up cash through rating points. well never never in a million years would i have imagined that now thirty years later in my life i'd be seeing shades of the running man so blatantly on display in the new game show paid off which premieres this week on tru t.v. while not featuring convicts violently be violently being killed off while fighting for their freedom the show does feature a different kind of modern day prisoner us citizens languishing under devastating student loan debts yes these poor victims of our modern day version of indentured
7:51 am
servitude are put on display for our viewing pleasure desperately competing against each other in the hopes of collecting enough money to pay off their student loans and earn their financial freedom all all for cable t.v. ratings and there will be no shortage of contestants my friends that's for sure because as the washington post reports student debt of as many as forty four million americans with the average student now carrying thirty seven thousand dollars in loans in fact even the host and creator of the show actor and comedian michael torpey admits the show came from his family's own struggles with student debt telling the washington post that quote i know what we're doing is a little ridiculous but in a way the show matched my family's story the only way we could pay off student loans was because i booked and underpants added that's insane.
7:52 am
it is insane that today we live in a country where a television game show is working harder to fix our society's problems and potentially provide a better future for our fellow citizens and our own damn elected officials. god bless america turn on the t.v. a lot start watching the hawks. you. want to feel that the. real that would be. as if you were to pull out of. what they like you know that i got. this. week so. well for the watching the hawks i am tired of all that are
7:53 am
on top of the law and i have student loan debt so i'm not god damn right this is this is ridiculous like i have i mean that i didn't think i would see i mean i saw the shades of a little bit of the running man over the years of you know how far reality t.v. in m.m.a. and that kind of thing has gone but i never thought i would see people who are legitimately suffering be forced to kind of go on this not force but volunteer to go on this game show and then compete to see who can you know get rid of their student loan debts this is ridiculous and tragic in my mind you know amounts to no and you don't have that and i'm not smart like you and everyone else want to say yeah i'm super smart let's see you let me do the math i'm the super super smart kid who got thirty two thousand dollars worth of loans for a college education to cover the cost and i got a college education i've paid in something like twenty two thousand but you know it's fun i actually all like fifty two thousand dollars now so yeah we're actually
7:54 am
versus the smarter one maria well maybe you are ready for the show maybe you are because look at this soon the idea of the show features three contestants competing to answer a range of trivia questions with categories that often feature you know like an education college related twist to it and depending on how many questions the winner. answers larry speed round tru t.v. will pay up to one hundred percent of their loans now in order to be on the show top of the wall as my co-host. must carry college but. find her up they are going to some contestants loans are you saw some kid doesn't close or as high as fifty thousand dollars so now boom i'm just to stick to what's really kind of dynamic and what's kind of lost in the fine print those and i'd be curious to see what your t.v. is going to do about this is that according to the post the money is awarded in checks given directly to the contestants right because tru t.v. the production company had sought ways to pay the loan directly to the you know to
7:55 am
the directly to the holder but the logistics and tax implications were purely too complicated even for hollywood oh believe me it's student loan company is make it were real hard that thing off so i can imagine why they didn't want to go anywhere near it that's why there's a class action lawsuits but what's interesting about this show and i will say i mean in jest is the host at the end of the show actually ends it with a really michael torpey finishes every episode by saying call your representatives right now and tell them you need a better solution than this. which is if you're we're at the point where it really this isn't really a game show to answer to answer about stuff so you know you're saying there's one point four trillion dollars in student loan debt in the united states spread out over forty four million borrowers with everybody. kind of owing about thirty two thirty three thousand ish. the around there is
7:56 am
a sumo and that is now the second highest consumer debt category only behind mortgages but it's higher than both credit card and auto discretion this is yet rushing the very soul of america yes and. while it does i'm sorry to be a grown adult. to be in the situation if you don't understand why it's so hard to pay these things off just the numbers i gave you it's because there's a lot of shady practices in the student loan area and there's a lot of they out a lot of fees and a lot of interest to the point in the way they calculate the interest you can never pay it off it's worse than a credit card you know and understand where they're coming from what i think you know i think michael told me the host is coming from a legitimate place like so this man we had to be doing it out of underwear to pay off his own family's student loan debt but to me there's a certain i don't know sickness involved with like how our society is handling this that a we're going to fix these people's student loan problems through a t.v.
7:57 am
show a t.v. show that's going to make essentially making money off of their suffering as you know there's a free people who are suffering from debt you know. if you reach high enough you can get the prize guess what no more bet that's what we've come to know in the united states that's less frightening to me and this is this is after a generation of being told you have to go to college no matter what you have to have a college degree trade schools not enough this isn't enough none of these things are you must be a doctor a lawyer is something you've got to get a liberal arts education i mean i'm great i'm happy i got mine but i know a lot of people that would have been better off in a trade or something else and would have been happier and now they have thousands and you're not alone in that happiness because only about half of those ages about twenty five to thirty nine year olds with at least a bachelor's degree in outstanding student loan debt say that lifetime financial benefits of their degree away the cost of only half say that that's incredible. donald trump may have already gotten that much sought nomination for
