too late for damage control or donald trump says he misspoke during his joint news conference with vladimir putin which it said the us media and politicians into a frenzy. the most disgraceful performances by an american president who showed cowardice on the world stage the second should have been but i don't see any reason why i wouldn't or why it wouldn't be russian. media storm to syrian settlements russia's defense ministry says it's ready to implement all agreements achieved by trump and putin in helsinki on how to bring stability and peace to syria. facebook admits classifying thousands of russians are they interested in treason supposedly for advertising purposes raising concerns over who might really want to
5:01 pm
target sochi is that. a very warm welcome you're watching r.t. international with me the key aaron and our top story this hour one very off the holding talks with president putin in helsinki donald trump has met with the u.s. congress members telling them he misspoke on russian meddling during the summit. i have president putin he just said it's not russian i will say this i don't see any reason why it would be and a key sentence in my remarks i said the word would instead of what the sentence should have been i don't see any reason why it wouldn't be russia. sort of a double negative. so you could put that in and i think that probably clarifies
5:02 pm
things pretty good bias. can i get the latest from our washington correspondents the mayor a con as the mayor it's good to see you know it's looking a little bit like donald trump has bowed to pressure what do you think. well it's not only us politicians from both parties who are going absolutely nuts over trump's meeting with president putin it's the media as well and as you can guess it's all a criticism of trump's willingness to talk to a fellow superpower let's check out what they've been saying. there's a reason there is a big national freakout happening right now over what the president just did in public what i do with putin pitched a shutout trump got beat up in a locker room what worries me about you mr president is you seem to say only good things about your enemies was shocking it was appalling there was a real sense of defeat and. deep breath you have been watching perhaps one of the most disgraceful of all performances by an american president he showed cowardice
5:03 pm
on that world stage where the president looked like a weak. we negotiated from a position of weakness yesterday and a lot of our putin walked away from helsinki with the when he had a chance to show loyalty to the men and women in uniform and instead he betrayed them it's a disaster. but now it's a force trying to backtrack saying that he misspoke and then that allowed him to reiterate claims that made by the u.s. intelligence community despite its not so credible record but they're still not convinced. instead of standing up for our democracy and democratic principles president trump cowered in the presence of putin it was a betrayal of the values and interests of this country there is nothing more heartbreaking to me than a president who refuses to stand up for our democracy president sided with the enemy and with the perpetrator of the election interference disgraceful performance
5:04 pm
of the president treacherous act ignorant and woefully disrespectful president continues to take the word of russians who see as stiffly embracing their excuses is able to confront russia and the. well the highly controversial meeting has prompted calls to release the transcripts from the meeting apparently they all want to know what happened behind closed doors. we're worried about what the president said publicly we're even more worried about what happened in those two hours when the president was alone with mr putin i believe the senate foreign relations committee should hold a hearing with the american translator who was present during president tramps and president putin's private meeting to determine what was specifically discussed and agreed to on the united states behalf now this all comes despite
5:05 pm
agreement reached upon so we're just going to have to see if a domestic backlash hinders russia u.s. relations. our tastes american thank you for the update but in the mean time while trump was commenting on the u.s. intelligence services the lights in the room went off the president had his own explanation for it every fall in our intelligence agencies works they just turned off the way that most of the intelligence is. very ok that is ok. the u.s. media speculation of whether donald trump is actually a russian agent or not the helsinki summit to did in fact see some impressive diplomacy one of the issues with it he does seem to have common ground with syria and russia as defense ministry says it's ready to implement any deals agreed
5:06 pm
artie's maria for national joined me earlier in the studio with more on this. i'm afraid there is no too much to discuss because there are no details on exactly what has been agreed in health and from what we hear from russia's defense minister right now it's also not clear what steps we may expect from both sides in syria but what is clear is that both russia and us are not interested in making this strategic information public but what is clear that that the dialogue that mr trump and mr putin had in monday in helsinki and these claims by russia's military is definitely a positive sign for syria both sides also stressed that they are interested in. ending the humanitarian crisis in syria and they said that they are going to focus their efforts on helping people in syria is that you but i would i think there is
5:07 pm
plenty to work on a crucial thing is there are many refugees in streets bordering syria in turkey lebanon jordan if we move back to their homes this will ease the migration pressure on european countries i think that is extremely important if we can do something to help the people of syria get back into some form of shelter. a humanitarian basis and that's what the world was really a humanitarian basis is that the both of us would be very interested in doing that and we are we will do the right what is the current situation in syria right now so as for the military situation the focus the main focus right now theory is on the region bordering israel and the confrontation between syria and israel has been very severe recently and has actually been quite always between the two countries but it's interesting that both fulton and trunk mentioned the security. of israel
5:08 pm
in that space is following the a long meeting behind closed doors just shortly after the meeting. we heard reports that the syrian government managed to regain control of a strategic point in that region so it's not a secret that the us has some influence on so you may say that that could be. a reaction to or what the two presidents have agreed but again like it's really hard to speculate right now. live now to our guests patrick kennington executive editor of twenty first century wired dot com mr henningsen always lovely to have you on the program now do you think if the u.s. and russia can work together can unite their efforts on syria we will see some relief for the migrant crisis the refugee flow will start to decrease. yes that's certainly one of the definite benefits if there is cooperation between
5:09 pm
these two great superpowers but if you really drill down and look at what's causing the instability in syria the united states has economic sanctions that it's put down on top of syria now quite severe as well as the european union this in borgo is strangling the country economically and arguably it's really playing into the humanitarian disaster it's feeding into the refugee crisis it's causing the economy to implode in many ways and the united states is also occupying northeastern syria and its proxy forces the kurdish s.d.f. are effectively occupying syria's oil supply that it could use to sell to make money to provide government services it's being cut off suffocated from its own energy supplies because of the s.d.f. of moved in where isis left before so the united states has a lot of power on the on the area of sanctions and also on the occupation of the
5:10 pm
syrian oil fields where it could provide tremendous relief it's not just the fight against isis isis is effectively defeated territorially anyway in syria so i think it goes to the media and the political classes need to go a little bit deeper and look at the true situation in syria right now i'll be asleep parts of syria have been left actually devastated by calling flakes that if the situation that should be improved do you think we will see mike wings leaving europe and heading back home. it's already happening the situation right now from where it was twelve months ago i was in syria about twelve months ago and the situation has drastically improved hundreds of thousands of people have returned to east a left formerly. terrorist held east aleppo they've returned they're coming back they are returning from europe in some cases this is been documented so this is
5:11 pm
already this trend is already happening what needs to happen now is the remaining militant on claves like it lip and like parts of the southern front as well these need to be sort of deescalated and militants need to be moved out so residents can come back in as well as what will happen in iraq right now when this is continued to be liberated but look at what happened in eastern guta in areas like duma residents are already returning and life is getting back to not normal but much better than it was during the years of militant occupation in these places like eastern ghouta like eastern aleppo and now looking at northeastern syria this is also one of the final regional enclaves in syria that needs to be stabilized and brought under state control i don't know how sustainable this u.s. military occupation is in northeastern syria and certainly this is going to be a topic of discussion between the russian president and the u.s.
5:12 pm
president one would hope so indeed and if those right decisions are made in order to stabilize the country what kind of timeline do you think we're looking at two way to tackling europe's my grip my one crisis. well i think the dynamic has changed a lot recently as well turkey is in a much different place diplomatically and visa v. its relationship with russia for instance the istana process in terms of deescalation and reconciliation that russia is involved in and leading as well is iran as well as turkey and the syrian government is going for all intents and purposes very successful so in terms of the migrant crisis the best thing that can improve the crisis from the syrian point of view is to stabilize the country not just from the fighting in violence point of view but also economically and again lifting sanctions the e.u.
5:13 pm
and the united states are playing a central role in suffocating syria economically and really driving some of the economic hardship that the country is suffering from but the european market crisis isn't soley about syrian refugees we're talking about central asia or contributing a large portion of these migrants that are beseeching the borders in front ears of europe and also from north africa and also from east africa so let's not forget about these regions in terms of their contribution to the modern crisis and certainly stabilizing libya and having a working government there in a working state which unfortunately they don't have and that's down to nato is action in two thousand and eleven that would certainly go a long way into helping to mitigate europe's migrant crisis so in your opinion what steps should be taken all could be taken by the u.s. and russia jointly in order to stabilize syria.
5:14 pm
i think the fact that they're working together this is a major sign it's a very positive sign in a sense that the united states if it won't be accused of providing air cover to militants or to isis as it has in the past you have to remember the united states has attacked syrian arab army positions has killed many many dozens of syrian and soldiers not just in dairies or but in other instances well this is hugely damaging i think to any chance of. confliction or working relationship going forward or cease fires for that matter the fact that the united states and russia are going to cooperate in this way means that we could actually see a meaningful cease fire how hold what you have to look out for is in the past when this was threatening to take place we had all the sudden some incident on the ground and also the white helmets would arrive with their cameras to film i'm talking about the u.n. aid convoy in the fall of twenty seventeen that's or twenty sixteen those are the
5:15 pm
sort of incidents you'd want to be aware of that would sort of call for any international multilateral cease fire effort that's been getting in the way in the past i'm hoping many people are hoping that this is something that will be resolved by the united states and russia cooperate in this way patrick henningsen executive editor of twenty first century wired dot com thank you for your time. and now to our top story one day off to holding talks with president putin in helsinki donald trump as met with the u.s. congress members telling them he misspoke about russian meddling we can go live now for comments we'd all been viro vice chair of the libertarian national committee a welcome to the program is very good to see you what do you read into trying to lay to. correction. sorry sure i mean there are two things one and one
5:16 pm
i'm actually no longer voice here because i'm seeking my party's nomination for president in two thousand and twenty and what i think about his latest comments it looks like a schoolboy apologizing for something he shouldn't be apologizing for the intelligence community in america has been giving primarily bad intel like in two thousand and three with weapons of mass destruction has been turning its surveillance apparatus on the american people trump was right to call them into question we have seventeen redundant spy agencies that need to be slammed into a box we need to fire most of the people who work there and we stop letting them create magine ery enemies that waste money and waste lives on nonsense approaches. apologists of the for i guess in your size are wrong that we will make sure we have a date that at do you think that performance at a press conference with putin has been treated fairly. no no i think we have a mainstream media and we have the military industrial complex whose goal it is to
5:17 pm
shame him in any way possible when he speaks against their agendas now he was right to challenge the military industrial complex of which the intelligence apparatus is one part one very important and very expensive part but the fact that he then turned tail and apologize just shows that he lacks the backbone for this job we need to have someone who is going to stand up there and put the intelligence community in its place demand either useful intelligence on relevant topics or face massive and huge budget cuts with associated tax cuts now despite trying apparently a backtracking on what was said or rather not said at a press conference democrats are still continuing their attacks against the president is there anything trent can do now to calm the situation to stop the criticism. what he can do is he can stand up for the right principles the right principles right now are to downsize the eighteen redundant spy agencies into one
5:18 pm
very small and constitutionally limited intelligence agency if trump can stand on actual principles and show some real backbone and real leadership then that's going to show a difference between him and the democrats in congress but that's not what he's doing right now right now he is trying to pander to one side and pander to the other he's shown a total lack of any kind of seriousness when he's going after any of these agencies just like he first said he was going to have that he was going to have mexico pay for the wall now he's saying that he's going to go after the intelligence agencies and he has failed to do that he has not cut their budgets he's not reined in they are still run amuck they're still wasting money and they're still creating a magine enemies based on bad and unreliable intelligence if i'm elected i'm going to put a stop to that. saying that misspoke is not going to happen i'm going to let that fly it's not a democrat party members one trump security service and translators to testify and provide provide transcripts of what was actually said in that meeting with it and
5:19 pm
you think that's going to help. it's going to help if trump can actually use what he said which was right he was right to call the intelligence community and into question they have been giving bad advice of bad intelligence for decades now and because of their bad intelligence we are stuck in one nonsensical quagmire after another so if he can actually take that and say you know what i retract the apology i wasn't wrong we need to put we need to put a leash on the american teligent service if he could do that that would be fantastic i don't see that happening though what i see is someone who's blustering a lot and showing any kyle lack of any kind of real backbone on this was quite an interesting even notices when trump says he has his full trust and his intelligence services he always underlines the words have intelligence can we read into that so . i think that's just trump's way of talking but if yes full trust in the intelligence services then he just is not
5:20 pm
a good student of history and i don't mean ancient history i mean recent history it was those intelligence services that told bush that there were absolutely slam dunk guaranteed weapons of mass destruction in iraq and there were not those intelligence services are not people it's not a community it is not a bureaucracy that can be relied on it has a huge conflict of interest their budget depends on the creation of imaginary enemies and they are continuing to create imaginary enemies right now with russia continuing with with the with with with made up problems all over the world and that is not reliable intelligence it is intelligence that is coming from a fundamental and massive conflict of interest those intelligence agencies need to be reined in we downsize them all those redundant seventeen spy agencies into one constitutionally limited spy agencies that actually follows the bill of rights of the american constitution. often virus thank you for your time.

he said even a day since the u.s. department of justice revealed it through arrested and charged with spying maria between a gun activist and russian citizen citizen but some western media outlets already jumping to radical conclusions on his kind of maupin explains according to the affidavit published by the f.b.i. they allege that essentially as she was working as a lobbyist she was essentially trying to create a back channel of communication between the russian government allegedly and the republican party and the national rifle association now she appears to be a gun enthusiast there are a lot of photos on social media of her carrying a firearm and it is essentially alleged that she you know was communicating with a government bank in russia she was communicating with government officials in russia all while she was do lobbying and trying to you know work in the interests of russia and work with the national rifle association and other interests that's
5:22 pm
what's essentially alleged now from there we've seen a lot of international media jump to making allegations about spying and engaging in some kind of espionage activity but if you read the affidavit that's not what's alleged what's alleged is essentially that she engaged in a lobbying this is actual we heard from senator chris murphy regarding the arrest another russian operative was rolled up in what appears to be. a coordinated attack against the united states elections by the n.r.a. and the russian government that's not actually what the affidavit says it says that she was developing relations with u.s. persons and infiltrating organizations having influence in american politics for the purpose of advancing the interest of the russian federation the allergy geisha is that she was lobbying not that she was doing any spying or anything to that effect now it's also interesting is the affidavit mentions that an exchange she allegedly had with a russian government official was titled posner two point zero and this is of
5:23 pm
course a reference to. vladimir posner now the f.b.i. goes on to describe a lot of your posner the russian american t.v. personality as quote a propagandist who worked in the dissin from ation department of the soviet k.g.b. now lattimer posner has spoken up and said he never had any contact with the k.g.b. and did not work with the k.g.b. it's also interesting to note that according to the f.b.i. affidavit she was communicating with government officials in russia over twitter which is not exactly a secure private communication mechanism not the kind of thing one would use of they were engaging in some kind of high tech intense espionage activities so a lot of questions are being asked but at this moment she is facing those charges and she was a rang on monday her attorney made a statement denying she's an agent he also said the woman offered to be interviewed by the special counsel's office but they all face so of no interest in speaking to her we brought up the issue with legal and media analyst lionel. what you're going
5:24 pm
to hear regarding this this russian citizen is she is called a russian agent what is missed completely is that agent should be referred to as a lobbyist and agent in law in american law means a representative are when american media say agent they think secret agent. espionage agent you know something nefarious something involving behind the scenes something illegal or something that is other than an agent this particular person was charged with basically being a lobbyist and asons without having registered with the department of justice could more indictments happen absolutely will the media american media clarify what that means absolutely not. three giants of social media facebook google and twitter have once again faced u.s.

lawmakers this time and an attempt to defend how they filter content their dress thank you very sions of bias claiming their platforms do not discriminate for political reasons it comes as facebook admits that its algorithm labeled thousands of russian uses as interested in treason perfectly for advertising purposes and that's raising concerns over who might really want to target these users artie's more i guess you have explains. it's simple facebook exists to serve advertisers not users not you and i said a rerun of its. advertisers pay money they want direct access to the right users the target audience you might fall into the interested in islam category or interested in homosexuality group it depends on
5:26 pm
the things you click on line which facebook tracks and then advertisers or governments can tag you but one of those categories was treason interested in treason officially russian people who facebook deemed as anti government to be russian and facebook confirmed it to us treason was included as a category given its historical significance given it is an illegal activity we have removed it as an interest category that is their official statement they added that the key word was hardly ever used by advertisers which means that it was used there were people out there searching for treason inclined russians and serving them with presumably propaganda encouraging them to commit treason against russia months it was found out facebook removed the category but the pundits managed to
5:27 pm
twist even vat this isn't about sixty five thousand russians being targeted with foreign propaganda meddling in internal russian politics that an see they say the real controversy is that these people could be targeted by russian authorities imagine if ace book categorize americans as potential traitors fact advertisers that blog zuckerberg op have expressed how upset i am that the russians try to use our tool to sow distrust what they did is room and we're not going to stand for it. and that's the meat of it when it's russians being targeted by propaganda to sell distrust in russia as five until you get caught r.t. has sent a request to a number of human rights and journalists groups asking for comment as to whether
5:28 pm
such a practice constitutes meddling in a country's internal affairs four of them including human rights watch and transparency international have responded to our request so far saying they are not in a position to comment journalist and radio host john galt believes facebook's power and influence has become overwhelming if this was americans who were being targeted there would be absolute power age in congress and across the whole of the american media and clearly the it was looks like it was being used to spread dissent in russia and that's wrong with this also be given to governments so that governments could enforce their will against the people we already know the algorithms are biased against anybody who's got a slightly right of center view we know about shadow of a shadow account i just think we've all been rather foolish it came along facebook and twitter facebook in particular and we gave all our information all our history
