storage laws the background checks that happen when you first get your license firearms owners are constantly monitored so if anything happens usually the first action of the place is to go and suspend the farm's license seize the firearms until the charge or whatever it is has been has been investigated and there's an outcome so firearms owners in australia do you take take we take our responsibility very seriously. we have. a component of our society that is extremely opposed to firearms and they tend to use scare mongering and fear and misinformation to try and i guess pursue their agenda here at the university of sydney we've built the world's largest database the world's largest knowledge base on everything to do with firearm death and injury and suicide and
3:01 am
also the laws of three hundred fifty jurisdictions around the world and that is a tremendously important resource for people who actually want to know the facts the issue is criminals and the illegal firearms that they use to commit a gun crime by their very nature they're not going to buy by the law sir further restricting firearms laws is not going to solve that issue and we've got that statistic that shows ninety seven percent of gun crime is committed with the legal firearms and the other issue we have ease we've got very porous borders he you know straight yeah so less than one percent of our containers that come into the country are inspected so there's a big issue with the ability for a legal firearms and i guess other contraband like drugs to get to find their way into into our country concentrating on mental health to solve this problem is largely a red herring the great majority of people who kill with firearms are not men.
3:02 am
before the event they are perfectly normal average people everybody says oh i'm terribly surprised but this happened and. the far more important indicators of things like previous violence family violence especially alcohol involvement drug involvement in australia seventy percent of gun deaths have nothing to do with crime they are suicides and unintentional shootings even in the united states it's about sixty percent. nothing to do with crime and so you have this huge elephant in the room. adolescent. well basically children shooting themselves in a moment of of love disappointment two or a bad exam committing suicide with firearms which. it certainly it just would not have happened if the gun had not been available as law abiding firearms are in is here in australia we operate under some of the strictest firearms laws in the world
3:03 am
sporting shooters as the largest group representing law abiding firearms owners he new south wales and to abstract we advocate for evidence based farms laws not laws that are based on emotion and hype we often hear. hear the statement that our laws have had an impact on reducing gun deaths there's no evidence based research to show that the introduction of our farms was in one thousand nine hundred six has had any effect on the number of gun deaths in the years prior to nine hundred ninety six the rate of death by firearm was falling and then after nine hundred ninety six it continued to fall by almost the same right. deep. that's a very rough ride there and you saw its proper climates and you have to fight to be
3:04 am
able to listen. it was gunshots on top of them and so many friends what happened in the end i've never given up i. don't want to bring back up. you know i don't want to see everybody in this world and it's better to participate in the good. old to live good with. you don't think about this if the assault on you that's great like any other another face. eurocentric point of view has seen a lot of criticism lately. how relevant is eurocentrism know and can it still be the idea that you know it's confronting sites.
3:05 am
to dig even deeper i went to australia as world famous bondi beach to talk with the visiting tourists and locals to discover just what people think of the differences in gun laws culture between australia and the united states it's stronger definitely in the states like growing up in mexico so close in the states. is she's very normalised but you coud own x. amount of cons of whatever color. definitely a stroller has more graduations about what i say like us united states and guns and gun culture what's the first thing that comes your mind fear fear yes definitely now when i say australian gun culture what do you feel about like australian gun
3:06 am
culture i feel like extra is a really safe place also when i walk in the street i feel really save we should be living in peace in general like you don't need a gun in your house to feel safe because they'll tell you i want a gun in my house and it was just because sometimes it if no one else has a gun would be cool like just ban them all like it's live in peace well we had a kneejerk reaction from prime minister to the edge of tasmania many years ago and you know there's a lot of things that could be said about what made that happen and why and it was we had a very sharp reaction and not many opposing militia groups saw anything you know right wing or you know those who were concerned with arming citizens and citizens arming themselves and at that time we had you know every family had a gun and still many families had guns but it's changed a lot of cultures change enormously since i was a little kid and i also see. this entire conversation is framed in such a way that you are pro or against as opposed to looking at the bridge between both and saying that personal responsibility and liberties play
3:07 am
a fundamental role within this conversation so it's not just like no guns no liberties yes i mean come on and it's also something that probably should be said about being a collective a specific individual because not every human being in lines in one particular way in that way and whom i as a collective is decide to be individuals as a bad person or vice versa you know that's a collapse again you know if you already and while the opinions on us and australia's issues with guns are both similar and diverse documentarian unpure would surprise winning journalist john pilger brought up a very startling truth about the victims of gun violence here in australia it's very different from the united states. except for indigenous people. interesting lee when people talk about guns and gun control they seldom include. the victims of gun and usually please god. or the gun
3:08 am
of authority and that is indigenous outback people. so yes there is a wild west but that wild west as i say affected indigenous people that's where the bloodshed happened and that's where it happened. in plain sight but out of sight and massacres took place right of course the straight up to recently. and the shooting by aboriginal people still goes on. black lives not mattering is very much an issue here and. it's not as bad perhaps as it was certainly not in the front is when people. killed aboriginal people. prove they were pro they were described in the encyclopedia brittanica resp.
3:09 am
so that. violence has always existed here. to dig deeper into the violence pilcher discussed i travel to the redfern district in sydney to meet with lolo forester an aboriginal rights activist and presenter on corrie radio sydney's only all aboriginal radio station well it's more so the aboriginal culture and the police force culture here we have had. so many of our people are dying custody or die at the hands of police and where the police is when you look at it i have been at fault and no one's been charged i'll give you an example we had down mr ward from western australia and he was picked up on a drink driving card so they bought him from
3:10 am
a community into perth and to the man city and it was a private in a private prison sekhar and what had happened there was no way conditioning in the the truck that they were bringing me by the time i got to perth it was fifty degrees in the better the truck and he melted into the back of the vane. so you can imagine what that would have been mind we had another woman in western australia back in two thousand and six jane she had to go into prison for unpaid fines aboriginal people when i used to go in there for minor offenses and she kept on saying she was in pain she'd been involved in domestic violence before she actually went in there and they took to the hospital they said there's nothing wrong with her they took a back to the hospital again there's nothing wrong with that then they dragged her added the cell along the hallway took a bet she died she had pneumonia she had all these other conditions that were wrong with her but no one checked around we had in panama under two thousand and four we had a young man which is an island community made up of aboriginal people it used to be
3:11 am
a kind of like a painter colony for bad blacks so what had happened he was that one day he was a little bit you know intoxicated the police picked him up and never had a charge in his life took him to the play station within an hour he was dead. the police officer wasn't charged and what had happened he had a busted splaying and broken ribs and that and the police officer said that he fell on top of him. so when they got the doctor's report back to the coroner's report back there was a shoe protest they bought the swat squad onto the yard and kicked in doors not dive of people and everything like this and. they burnt down the play station as well the local community burnt down the play station one guy was charged with creating the riot so he got four years trial. and other men got moved around queens and another other prisons that they wouldn't connect with each other then when lex wotton the guy that they said was they when later when he came in they put
3:12 am
a gag order on him not to be able to speak for a period of time just raise that my all last year he's put a case up against the police he won the case the two hundred twenty thousand dollars and then they get a class action case for the whole law and for four hundred forty seven people are not that's not the whole population before hundred forty seven people were awarded thirty million dollars but that has to be recognized by the federal government i have to have proof that so you've got why destroying people going why you bring black people thirty million dollars. the pain and suffering that i had you know young paper what kick to the floor when mothers are not when you want to and i'm in a mission of play call them hey you call them resave say that they have. why would you bring in the swat squad in a military with the rifles that we see i.v. they're into a community is that has always had that problem with the police and it's not one
3:13 am
place officers actually been charged by killing them when i first that nation of aboriginal person. learning of the startling violence being perpetrated on the aboriginal and first nation peoples of australia by the guns of authority exposed some striking similarities between australia and the united states in topics the mainstream media is too afraid to touch in the debate over gun control this of course leaves one last topic in the gun debate to explore the ultimate culture of gun violence around the globe the military industrial complex it's interesting because you're part of the gun control debate the doesn't get talked about a lot is that you know how it ties in to the military industrial complex when you go you know you know weapons makers and all the lobbyists and the influence over government you know. is australia dealing with that same thing are they influenced
3:14 am
by the military industrial complex the way the united states is when you arrive in sydney and certainly in canberra when you walk pass in canberra as you walk away from your plane there are those advertising for the great arms country companies british aerospace ruffian lockheed martin was just taken over a great chunk of the university of melbourne. the national university in canberra has arms company all over it. the u.s. influence in this trade is massive it's very important to the u.s. especially now in its confrontation with china its its perception of china as threatening its dominance all of it are necessary it's none of it should involve
3:15 am
us trade but this trade has allowed it and the history of us in clones and us bases in this trade is a deeply sinister one us right really from the end of the. the second world war nineteen forty five. the us mapped straight for its minerals for its potential as. a bases. and since that there has been a very powerful u.s. presence in this country and usually the ambassador has been an extremely outspoken. not a diplomat but an outspoken protagonist of u.s. war policies the u.s. treats a stranger does treated as a fifty first state. i'm quite serious
3:16 am
a fifty five state there's no question he's straight a military straight in politics his trade in media is completely integrated into the united states the straightest possibly the only country where generals and admirals can come and give all sorts of scare warnings and they'll be given front page treatment we've had here recently hillary clinton warning us about the perils of china china is going to take a side of absolute nonsense. nonsense but it gets media attention and because america's agenda or in the pacific is to confront china hillary clinton started that with her pivot to asia or in two thousand and eleven in fact barack obama came and announced it before the
3:17 am
australian parliament in two thousand and eleven that was hillary clinton's policy and you now have bases that go all the way from one of the most important u.s. spy base. is set up designed and set up by the cia at pine gap right next in iraq springs all the way now darwin there's a marine base in dahlan there are other u.s. bases around the country a straight a has no. quarrel with china and in fact the straighter has no enemy. no one once we invade a straight. a stranger is probably one of the most secure places in the world and yet the present government of malcolm turnbull is building one of the biggest war machines and creating
3:18 am
a strange and weapons industry. spending billions on it all of it unnecessary. that is our show for you today remember everyone in this world we are not told that we are loved enough so i tell you all i love you i am tyrone ventura and i'm tabitha wallace keep on watching those hawks and have a great day and night everybody. the pension fund has guaranteed returns that is being abused by the crooks in the county to shovel it a lot of toxic garbage and that is ending up is a guaranteed bill because at the end of the day a lot of these pension accounts are not being cut back people who think that a pensioner being told has been run out of touch anymore you're now flat broke you have to go out in the street and beg for money go get addicted to heroin we don't want you anymore drop dead. is

democratic socialism the future of the democratic party the future of america is moving to the left a winning strategy to take on donald trump's vision of conservative populism one thing is undeniable mainstream politics in both parties for under pressure to evolve and become more accountable. most people think just stand out in this business you need to be the first one on top of the story or the person with the loudest voice of the biggest raid in truth to stand down the news business you just need as the right questions and demand the right answer. questions.

syrian president assad informs activist group the white helmets they will be wiped not like other terrorists if they refuse to surrender. the old trunk claims russia might interfere in the upcoming midterm elections to help his rivals the democrats as the issue of russian maddening remains divisive. if you're meddling in the way that osama bin ladin meddled with the world trade center. and more than six hundred migrants forced their way into spain was storming through a border fence between the country's north african enclave and ceuta moral code.
3:21 am
thank you for watching the r.c. international news headlines broadcasting live from moscow i'm kate partridge. syrian president bashar al assad has issued an ultimatum to the activist group known as the white helmets branding them terrorists currently in the last rebel stronghold in syria which is surrounded by government forces. the fate of the white helmets will be the same is that any terrorist they have to pass on to lay down their arms and take advantage of the amnesty or be wiped out like other terrorists well the syrian president bashar al assad has reiterated his position on the white house it's being a controversial group now in the past he's regarded the white house mrs agents of western powers that have links to jihad this great sin he said that the world has
3:22 am
been warned of the group's dangers this comes as the syrian government has condemned the evacuation of the white house minutes from the south of the country and damascus has described the move as a criminal operation by israel and its tools but the israel defense forces said that they were acting on a request by the u.s. the u.k. and other european nations as well but the evacuees were taken to jordan by the i.d.f. on washington's request and it's thought that the plan was to evacuate around eight hundred white helmets and their families but the number now seems to be about half of that and the number of them are expected to resettle in western countries such as canada germany and france tell us a bit more about this evacuation what was needed well at the moment the syrian army is currently advancing on one of the last rebel centers in syria but this aside for the year is the white house myth groups have advertise themselves as a volunteer force and they get a huge funding from western countries and the groups also being praised by the west
3:23 am
as well they've even received an oscar for a documentary but the group's been repeatedly accused of cooperated closely with the hardest groups and effectively serving as that media branch as well stage and rescue operations the social media as well so that all this all adds up to the controversy surrounding the great. so with no they would bring cameras and explosives something to destroy for example this building here they'd find people in the streets and promise the money or food to say whatever they needed. to syrian first responders who risked their lives to save others in war torn aleppo the face of on
3:24 am
relenting brutality heroes have emerged. of saddam whenever food aid was brought into the white helmets and the rebels would take it all for themselves they give us nothing not even bread. they have all chosen to risk their lives to save others. when you see that little beach and when we go out to buy food we'd see them if there was a collapsed building after a shelling they cordoned off the area and save rebel fighters or people they cared about they would leave the civilians same happened not far from here a building was destroyed in shelling and they came just to pull their own out as usual they lift the civilians. we've been able to get these brave people and their families out of syria after the extraordinary work they've done
3:25 am
saving lives the white helmets those people they held the rebels only did in save civilians the locals out for rebels. antiwar activists ken starr says western powers who are supporting the white helmets are fully aware of the threat posed by the group. i don't think they're naive the people in the establishment they are interested party they know exactly what they're doing in so far as the canadian government is concerned they brought the white house and that's our representatives twice to canada so the establishment knows full well that this group is part of the arsenal of weaponry that is being used against illegally against the government of syria and they continue to give us money and they are telling them that they are
3:26 am
conducting they are saving syrian civilians well there is a lot of testimony from syrian civilians that their white helmets never help them so these people are not heroes but they are portrayed as heroes in the west someone put it here one of my colleagues in the peace movement said they are the sugar coating on and off ugly and illegal war so the the people at the top know exactly what they're doing but they're telling a different story to the ordinary people in the street. will trump faces a major test of his presidency later this year the midterm elections these are widely seen as a vote of confidence in any administration but as caleb maupin explains whether it's republicans or democrats u.s. politicians seem to know when to tell us who's to blame in france else to go their way was so much division on capitol hill the democrats and republicans have finally
3:27 am
found something that they can agree on both parties now agree that the russians are coming more specifically they're coming to interfere in the twenty eight teen mid-term elections this is president trump i'm very concerned that russia will be fighting very hard to have an impact in the upcoming election. based on the front the new president has been tougher on russia than me they will be pushing very hard for the democrats they definitely don't want trump and this is his old arch nemesis there are some checks experts in silicon valley valley with whom i have met who say that you know maybe what they'll do this next time is to really disrupt the actual election shut down the servers that you send results to interfere with the operation of voting machines because still too many of them are linked to the internet so there we are still very vulnerable russia's meddling in the midterm
3:28 am
elections may just be a hypothesis at this point but the trumpet ministration from the department of homeland security to the secretary of state are ready to fight the two thousand and eighteen midterm elections remain a potential target for russian cyber and influence operations i think we should be absolutely prepared to assume that they will try to interfere in all fifty states we will not tolerate russian interference in our two thousand and eighteen elections we are planning and preparing as if they'll try again this fall and beyond now it hasn't happened yet but the retaliate tory sanctions to be imposed on russia are all set up by congress we're going to pursue russia's energy and financial sectors which overgaard its parastatal and it is my goal along with senator graham to make sure that we're protecting the united states the friend in the united states folks in washington d.c. are manning their battle stations all prepared to face an on coming on slot but what are they worried about well it could be the twenty sixteen presidential
3:29 am
elections let's not forget that james clapper the former director of national intelligence said that in the twenty sixteen supposed intervention none of the vote tallies were in any way affected they did not change any kelley's or anything of that sort we had no we have no way of gauging. the impact that some of the intelligence committee can't gauge the impact it had on the choices you looked through made furthermore it's not exactly clear who russia is supposedly going to be supporting now the democrats say that russia is going to be supporting donald trump but trump says that the pending kremlin subversion will be in support of the democrats why would he say that well because it makes just as what sense is what the democrats it was a trope everybody wants to blame another country for the problem you know the reason why thirty million americans don't have health care has nothing to do with russia that has everything to do with the enemies of america which by the way are
3:30 am
in america acts on the military industrial complex these are the enemies of america are tired government is bought it's legal bribery and they steal and cheat right out in the open americans guard gobbling this up it's amazing you know we used to be afraid of russia because they had a communist ideology they're just kind of pressing that button on americans because we've been conditioned to be afraid of russia and they're communism even though they're not communists anymore this will all be cleared up after the election whichever side loses can blame russia for it and after all it worked in the twenty sixteen presidential election for hillary clinton there is no reason that donald trump can't use it to his advantage kaleb up and r.t. washington d.c. well earlier i asked legal and media analyst lionel and democratic political consultant richard goodstein why the issue of russian meddling is proving divisive liberal politicians freek.
