our democracy itself is in the crosshairs stretch it's not going away the russians try to get into and steal information from u.s. national security and intelligence chiefs are doubling down on allegations of possible foreign interference ahead of congressional and local mid-term elections without private providing any specific evidence. dozens of civilians are killed in an alleged saudi coalition air strike on a yemeni port city the instant apparently surprising riyadh's main ally the us. and national geographic admits it went too far with a caption on a photo of a dying color the photographer said it wasn't the message they wanted to get across and the story had been skewed.

this is arts international coming to life from the russian capital with me jaclyn guga welcome to the program. u.s. security and intelligence chiefs have pledged to protect democracy and a rare united appearance at the media briefing in the white house they attempted to reassure the american public that they are actively working to protect the upcoming mid-term elections in november from foreign interference and surprisingly russia was named as the main threat without any evidence provided. our democracy itself is in the crosshairs paid by russia to try to weaken and divide united states threat is not going away to prevent foreign interference in our elections to prevent russian and other foreign influence and the russians try to hack into and steal information candidates and government officials alike cyber attacks against
7:02 am
voting infrastructure along with computer intrusions malicious cyber actors targeting elected officials that goes beyond the elections it goes to russia's intent to undermine our democratic values we've heard the head of the n.s.a. come out and say that the u.s. government is prepared to engage in special operations to counter russian influence in the upcoming elections now dan coats the director of national intelligence he was pressed to give specifics related to allegations regarding hacking and and other specific allegations about somehow russia possibly influencing the election this is how he responded you give us a very sense of who specifically targeted we know these senators have said that they've been targeted by hacking by people in person in government. numbers of the senate members of the house is it democratic or republican campaigns but we follow
7:03 am
procedure that spend agreed. some time ago in terms of when we. receive this type of information it is processed through the leadership of the respective house or chamber the senate chamber and then disseminated down to the individual member who was who was targeted so we have taken that actions that it's in place but i'm not in a position right now to release these things these allegations that we recently heard are not that different than what we really heard many times since the twenty sixteen presidential election especially. the last few months russia is accused of somehow influencing the minds of american people via social media however as these allegations are being leveled not a lot of evidence is really being presented to back them up this is new rhetoric and actually it doesn't seem to be based in reality i have to say they're going to blame russia for whatever happens in the november elections whatever goes wrong
7:04 am
whatever problems we have it's russia's fault there are no racial divisions there is no way in quality of income there are no problems in this country except the ones that are made by russia this is ridiculous what's going on here they have to use something to deflect criticism from their own. bruised their own rules ship this is absolutely getting out of control right now i have not seen it like this before and it's getting more and more dangerous when you think of the relations between two superpowers they don't want better relations with russia they want to push this line and the yes there's a war between trump and his intelligence along with the announcement congress also introduced its own aggressive measures against russia with a new bill it calls for the secretary of state to assess whether russia is a state sponsor of terrorism it also proposes creating a new fusion center which will seek to respond to hybrid threats from russia among those provisions the law requires at least a two thirds vote on any attempt to leave nato political commentator lou rockwell

told us the objective is to forge a united front against moscow. they want to get everybody on board and you saw that they had all the heads of all the various agencies and they want to get every interest group they have the you know the military and the entire military industrial complex the security complex all they are waving the bloody shirt they produced zero evidence and. that's you know that's been true all along about the civil war should interfere it's russian collusion and all that stuff they want to get everybody together they want to scare the american people. dozens of civilians have been killed in the yemeni port city of who died in air strikes allegedly carried out by the saudi led coalition we would like to warn you that the following images are upsetting yemeni officials say twenty eight people were killed and around seventy injured however a local t.v. station has reported that fifty two are dead and at least one hundred wounded airstrikes hit an area near the city's main hospital. saudi arabia has
7:06 am
denied carrying out any airstrikes in the area at the time and said blaming the attack on who's the rebels rats coalition has been at war with them since march of two thousand and fifteen when saudi arabia joined the civil war in yemen on the side of the government since that intervention yemen has become the world's worst humanitarian crisis that's according to the u.n. despite that saudi arabia and the u.s. have enjoyed wide military cooperation both under the trump and obama administrations washington has been providing riyadh with billions of dollars worth of planes tanks and other military equipment but now the u.s. ambassador to the u.n. seems to perceive the latest attack on civilians as a new development despite the same scenario playing out frequently. we had that a saudi led coalition had airstrikes today against a fish market and a hospital in who data that may have caused dozens of casualties we've hit
7:07 am
a new day now in yemen. and we've had a new sense of urgency and you know. that if this is what started to happen civilians are at risk infrastructure is at risk for nikki haley it just occurred today which is unfortunate because the united states is actually supplying a lot of the logistics and the the intelligence for the saudis and you don't hear too much criticism he should have been out there months ago condemning what the the the humanitarian catastrophe that's occurring in yemen is just you just you just cannot be nice about this any longer or or just overlook it because it's gone on for too long and too many people have been have been killed and you wonder and you have to ask yourself the question what's the point. national geographic has
7:08 am
admitted it went too far linking a starving polar bear with climate change saying there was no way to know for certain why the bear was dying and national geographic went too far in drawing a definitive connection between climate change and a particular starving polar bear there is no way to know for certain why this bear was on the verge of death artist polly boycott looks at how simply swapping the caption opened a whole new angle on the story. you might remember these heart wrenching pictures of a starving polar bear looking for food national geographic ran them back in twenty seventeen with a big caption claiming that this is what climate change looks like the images went viral the photographers estimate over two billion people saw them on you tube alone the video got one point five million views and it also became one of the most of you tube videos on national geographic's web but by caption didn't make an explicit
7:09 am
link to climate change they posted the videos saying that this is what starvation looks like but when national geographic picked up the material to publish it skewed the narrative and it was. this is one bear it's not a one source visits i mean i mean is the expectation that as climate change continues that this kind of image is going to be amplified again and again but that viral success troubled the photographer as it was not the message they intended for viewers the mission was a success but there was a problem we had lost control of the narrative we were perhaps naïve the picture went viral and people took literally. well now national geographic has been forced to admit that it went too far in linking the dying bat to climate change and that
7:10 am
there's no way of telling exactly why the stricken bat was on the verge of death so i've come to london zoo to speak to the animal lovers head to find out if they feel like their sympathies have been manipulated by the media. so the polar bear is is a stall but it could be climate change if we think that first and maybe no we'll talk about it maybe move the juice of climate change as well but obviously you could also be for. advertisement for maybe charity purposes i think it may be fake because in and talk to could there would really be those instant. i think it's everyone this is so you think that really the cause is climate change is exactly mean that's where the growth. you're so it's as safe for you the magazine simply took what everybody would have thought about these images and said it yes i
7:11 am
wouldn't necessarily. thing do you feel like it's one of those situations where the media sometimes kind of manipulates you need to tell it definitely. that is i mean we know that that happens we know that there is manipulation this picture is very very powerful impact when you see it but then once you have the impress on them it's very difficult to change your mind or to to get focus again on this new problem that i feel like because a lot of other pictures as well will i says no to it's not there's no any way for them to go get it anyway so it probably has something to do climate change so yeah climate change is clearly a serious issue that weighs heavily on the minds of many people but the question is whether it should negate serious reporting. the photographers haven't explained why they waited till now before speaking out but some biologists were already skeptical about the claims the animal was suffering because of climate change saying that

illness was a more likely reason for the bear's condition. a new strategy to cope with the influx of migrants to germany has been introduced the first of a series of camps known as anchor centers have opened their doors to refugees coming to germany across the austrian border the move was agreed in a controversial last minute deal between the country's ruling coalition. the migrant issues drove a wedge between chancellor merkel and interior minister horsy hoffer at one point see hoffer even threatened to resign putting the ruling coalition in danger they eventually agreed to set up the migrant transit centers in bavaria that will help asylum seekers to be processed faster the name comes from uniting three german words that mean arrival decision and reparation and there's just nothing explains how the new refugee camps will work. and consent is like this one part of germany's new strategy for dealing with refugees in bavaria
7:13 am
seven if these are up and running described as one stop facilities they bring together all the government agencies needed to complete the asylum process bordering austria the variable the brunt of the migrant wave which saw over one million migrants and to germany as part of medicals open door policy in two thousand and fifteen was. the local authorities are worried that rather than easing the tensions as promised by the federal government these processing centers could bring more trouble it's not much of a problem in the city before the community in the vicinity it is a big burden on we are afraid that should there and there being more people in the refugee center it could lead to social tensions developing each sensor can hold between one thousand and one thousand five hundred migrants but the one hit can
7:14 am
reach a maximum capacity of three thousand four hundred local businesses say that they're feeling the strain already since the reception center opened we have had at least one theft each week it is very noticeable and has increased a lot the fact is ninety percent of thefts are done by people from these centers the city is having to have a seventy thousand residents who was aware of the challenges posed by the influx of people put people in the migration center much no sense at all because that makes them feel like a ghetto and get our station was never going to history. the mood of local people has become a little bit more aggressive newcomers have to learn how to fit into society to avoid this refugee support groups are among those not happy with these processing facilities they see them as an impediment to integration and in some cases harmful to those house being permanently confined to mass housing facilities it's got a strong fix for those affected seven and consent. as a result of the compromise between chancellor merkel and terry mills to see hope

for following hard fought negotiations but whether they all think feedin even the tensions in the coalition government remains unclear finishes happy party. a suicide bombing has hit a mosque in eastern afghanistan during prayers killing at least twenty four people according to officials live now to afghanistan for the latest details from local journalists are worried what more do we know at this point. speaking to the fact they are provincial council member mr monk said at least twenty four people are confirmed killed at least sixty people are wounded the casualties and fatalities could be much higher the attack took place during the friday prayer when the sun mosque was busy hosting a big number of worshippers in the provincial capital of card is the capsule of paktia province in southeastern afghanistan the shias in afghanistan are extremely
7:16 am
vulnerable especially when it comes to places of worship islamic state of attack them now that part of the country on the border with pakistan was a stun region in the corum agency is where militant pakistani groups are also operating like jenga v. in different capacities as well as the pakistan based militant work there karni network so we'll have to really see who was behind this attack but what is an extremely dangerous trend now in afghanistan is that the afghan government and its international allies continue to fail to protect lives in afghanistan and when you have such a big number of casualties in fatalities you're actually thinking about destroyed society almost you're talking about families losing their breadwinners people are losing their lives their aspirations their dreams in this for. and six train the dangerous trend actually continues in most major city that has been this hot almost

every other week if not daily so the question is what if i me. security strategy is in place to prevent these sort of attacks in the future. local journalist paul sorry thank you for bringing us that update. white farmers in south africa may be about to lose their lands as the government pushes to amend the constitution and seize their property property without compensation more on that after a short break. disinflation very little inflation for decades dangerous rates have gone down for thirty years markets have rallied for thirty years now the whole thing is reversing interest rates are going up so is inflation so we'll see how that plays out if
7:18 am
wages rise faster than inflation. as such then trying to wonder if wages don't rise as fast as this meal inflation then we got trouble. seems wrong. wrong just don't call. me. yet to shape out just to become active. and engaged in equals betrayal. when so many find themselves worlds apart we choose to look for common ground.
7:19 am
i. welcome back to the program white farmers in south africa are outraged at government plans to amend the constitution so their land can be seized without compensation the new legislation that will permit the redistribution of white owned land to the country's poor black majority pulse lawyer has talked to some of the farmers involved. the farmers that are using the utilizing the land at the moment if you take the land away from them without compensating them where would they go what they do they have to have capital to start up a new venture if you take ownership away from people you're going to lose all your international investments people are not going to invest in a country where you can't own something ownership is the base of any economic growth mr i'm a poor or want to create wealth because the or poor people it's true that is it is true that you want to create jobs in the agricultural sector but you're not going to do through land expropriation in one thousand to create rule and then you
7:20 am
destroy the one six in that he's going to create the world democracy in action is how the south african president several ram oppose or course his efforts to change the constitution to allow for land expose ph and without compensation he announced this week he was increasing if it's to do this so that agricultural production people's access to land and just and equitable distribution are increased what this means is that the few thousand white commercial farmers in south africa will lose their lend and receive no money for it under apartheid most black south africans were not allowed to own land with the result that even today the country's white minority still has a disproportionate hold over farms when also mandela's african national congress to power in one thousand nine hundred four it walda by the year two thousand and thirty percent of land would be returned to black owners but even today that has not happened with white farmers still holding the overwhelming majority if you take
7:21 am
away those are all players and you replace them with people that has no knowledge and has no experience we are going to produce a lot less and if we produce less food the food prices will go up and that will harm the people that's on the bottom of the food chain the people that's struggling to survive at the moment if you have less. russia will go up and they will struggle even more to avoid in recent months there's been growing anger against the south african government by the country's black majority over the slow pace of land reform but critics warn that the government's plans to expropriate land could lead to land grabs like what happened in neighboring zimbabwe where the economy collapsed after land reform was implemented still south africa's president in so said most people here want to see exposed creation without compensation become part and parcel of the constitution. r.t. south africa. brazil is considering a new law that will prevent isolated indigenous tribes from killing children that
7:22 am
are disabled or for other reasons not able to live within the groups some lawmakers though say the traditions of these remote ancient communities should be protected and that the rules of modern society do not apply. i. think they'll. say i say if i say. if i had remained there i would certainly be dead. certain cultural practices here i'm compatible with human rights they need to be
7:23 am
thwarted there's no middle ground. the most repressive and lethal actions ever perpetrated against indigenous peoples of the americas were unfailingly justified through appeals from noble causes humanitarian values and universal principles. that along a little. under current laws the tribe can't be judged if there was no where in us they were doing something wrong the bill being considered is called no watches law it's named after a woman who refused to kill her child with a progressive muscular disorder the missionaries who saved them propose the bill it calls for educating tribes and monitoring pregnant women and also says the failure to report child killing should be criminalized the bill has already passed one
7:24 am
stage but is still being considered by the senate some representatives there worry that the bill would violate the tribes rights. just to follow on the g. mobile when we talk about the law which states that indigenous peoples customs must not dominate we take away their rights when they are already in a vulnerable position we should respect their traditions more cases of violence and abuse take place more often when their culture is disrupted we should concentrate on the social aspects of their health rather than criminalize their customs and traditions and digitas people are often ignored when it comes to social policies and are also treated carelessly by the brazilian government it's always been a taboo in brazil to talk about it so we have not mini studies not many data and also because it's difficult to register then then there's a has noticed that oh depair and it's a lot because of these obligations that sometimes they have to you know they are
7:25 am
babies we have some cases that the parents committed suicide in our dinner not to kill their children it's not that we are imposing than the stage no day do not want to kill they are choosing because they love the. ones to have to have the hell so to receive an estate so they can raise these children that's a wrap up of the day's top headlines for now but in the meantime you can find us on all of your favorite social media platforms for up to the minute reports thanks for tuning in. the c.d.c. in good. mood. this is. the church secret indeed catholic priests accused of sexually abusing children can get

is kim jong un serious about denuclearizing or is he pulling one over on the trump administration take a look at that on this edition. of politicking on larry king a troubling series of reports suggest that north korea may be building new long range missiles and exploring ways to hide the extent of its nuclear weapons program from the united states this f. the donald trump recently tweeted his anger with critics of north korea's progress to denuclearize what's going on and what do these reports mean for the agreement signed at the singapore summit let's talk about that with gordon chang expert on
7:28 am
asia and north korea columnist. and author of nuclear showdown north korea takes on the world he joins me from new york our what's your read gordon on the reports that north korea is building new ballistic missiles near pyongyang. that washington post report from the beginning of this week is certainly correct north korea is building these wasan fifteen's that was the missile that was tested november twenty ninth and it has a range to strike the east coast of the united states the big story here actually there are two stories one of them is that all of these revelations undercut the notion that the trumpet ministration has been propagating that north korea has made a strategic decision to give up its weapons if it's made that decision then it wouldn't be building these missiles and it wouldn't be producing facade material the other story larry is that you have an intelligence community in the united states which is angry upset and is actually playing
7:29 am
a paul revere role where you have senior administration officials trying to downplay all these developments and then the i.c. comes up with all of these leaks which show that the north koreans are going full steam ahead and so essentially the intelligence community is undercutting senior trump officials the president and secretary of state pompei of specifically so what have been in singapore did conjunct law didn't did this read to him what happened yeah those two possible explanations neither of them are good one of them is that that kim jong un really had no intention of giving up his weapons and that's probably the case the other one is that kim was sincere in giving up his weapons but he doesn't control the military and the military are the ones who are actually in possession of the missiles in possession of nuclear warheads and are directing all of this research and development and production it may be a little bit of both but the point is that this is just inconsistent with the
7:30 am
assumptions that underpin trump policy so what does what does trump do now. well i think president trump should pivot basically he should be starting to impose costs and not just on the north koreans but also the chinese and the russians who have been blatantly violating u.n. sanctions over the last several months president trump has referred to this a couple days ago when he was speaking about the chinese getting in the way they certainly have and they will continue to get in the way until he imposes those costs so for instance he can go after the chinese banks that have been money laundering that would be a direct statement that would tell sea jinping the chinese ruler that he's got to cut it out but until president trump does those things the chinese are going to continue to violate sanctions.
