now let's talk about today's events with jim just government relations specialist and former u.s. diplomat welcome to the program jim just as we're speaking to you we're also showing the live pictures on the screen of what's happening in oregon it looked as if some arrests just as i was speaking earlier were made how do you expect though the day to unfold in portland. i think it largely depends on whether the police continue to do their job i've been watching of this event for the last two hours and it seems that the berlin police are doing an excellent job of keeping the two sides apart although i have seen some rather informal contacts between protesters representing the different views and actually some very cordial exchanges in terms of points of view even a couple of hugs so i think that there is no there isn't necessarily a degree of extremism on all the people taking place that sometimes it is depicted

to be but the important thing is the police seem determined to prevent any violence to keep the two groups apart and that's that's good how difficult a job without. it i'm not that difficult of a job if the police do it unlike the case in charlottesville where i think it was quite caught because they deliberately filed the protesters the right wing protesters through mob types in order to provoke violence and that is what occurred and i hope people have learned from that that that's not the way we do business in this country that this scene is just as we're seeing we have seen them earlier in the summer as well in portland obviously in charlottesville as well is this becoming the norm jim essentially to expand violence at the least when differing viewpoints converge. well let's let's let's make sure we understand the context here there is no viewpoint on the left that is so extreme that you cannot hold a rally anywhere in the united states and expect to be attacked by protesters that
