airstrike has killed forty civilians in yemen most of them children according to local sources more than seventy others were reportedly wounded the strike hit a school bus and a marketplace now but a warning you may find the following images disturbing now according to the red cross twenty nine children were killed all under the age of fifteen forty eight other people were injured including thirty children the strike hit the north of the country which is under the control of the hooty rebels saudi arabia launched an intervention against them back in two thousand and fifteen in an official statement we are defended the attack using the rebels of using children as human shields. the targeting today is a legitimate military action conducted in conformity with the international humanitarian law to target the militants responsible for planning and targeting civilians which resulted in killing and injuring them. the school bus bombing has been met with outrage in the u.s.

senator chris murphy tweeted that the united states bears responsibility for the deaths he pointed out that the u.s. applies weapons to saudi arabia along with military intelligence the united states is by far the largest supplier of weaponry to the saudis u.s. also provides targeting assistance for air strikes and military drills last year saudi arabia spent seven hundred fifty million dollars on training by american specialists to reduce civilian casualties and earlier this week the state department defended saudi arabia's actions in yemen. we should ask another country to stop attacking other nations and to stop fomenting terror that's one of the things that the united states government does how do you square that with the stance of saudi arabia and the u.a.e. as well you don't see i'm sorry what do you mean by you're saying that you don't have a problem telling the country how to get more empowered getty yet but you're you're siding with saudi and you. we have concerns about what the who the rebels have been

doing for quite some time that is well documented they have been terrible and conducted many many attacks against their own sins against the people of yemen saudi arabia certainly has a right to try to and to take out some of those bad actors that something something that they have a right to do and we support that and i have to wrap it up i notice that you seem tongue tied about it though you would state department spokesman shouldn't she didn't like the fact that the questioner was asking her about what was going on in yemen we know the u.s. of selling the weapons we know the u.s. is providing targeting data so it's horrendous and i would say the u.s. bears absolutely direct responsibility for this it's telling the saudis what to do it's telling the probably the u.a.e. what to do certainly the saudis it's a horrible bloody business and it's a war that's gotten virtually no attention in the u.s.

the school bus bombing is the latest in a series of tragedies in yemen week ago sea port was hit by an airstrike fifty five civilians were killed and one hundred seventy wounded rela who dave from the red cross in sanaa told us the situation in yemen is appalling. we have received twenty nine identified the bodies of children up to fourteen years old and forty eight injured among them thirty children but for the overall story. this needs to be referred to the ministry of health and population of yemen a humanitarian situation and the country is catastrophic it's a book relation that has been brought to the brink of collapse the health system is decimated the movement of population is growing because of all the. conflicts and hostilities going on so we really do think that.

more hostilities and you know the expansion of those hostilities with it will exacerbate an already dire humanitarian situation even more a receiver violations cross the country and it's really sad to. issue or is speak about civilian casualties in a matter of less than a week so for us this is painful and whenever we see stiff it in casualties we i mean. this is just horrific. eternal used by joe harvests in syria has been turned into a monument dedicated to those who helped to defeat the terrorists local artist carved out sculptures on the walls of the former hideout.

will see. a willingness to collaborate with us to come up with a solution bravo and it's not just facebook for doing just as great one question though since already most americans head to social media to get their news when will freedom of speech ring a bell political commentator brian logan says the left is moving to get rid of undesirable views on social media platforms. it feels like the only people they have the right to speak out are those who agree with the leftist principles if you are against lefties ideology any kind of way they find a way to demonize you they call you a conspiracy theories as you're promoting fake news we're coming more under the control of big corporations and a lot of these people who are in the government and corporations are kind of working together to colluding with each other any kind of extra regulation from the federal government will most certainly impact freedom of speech online there's going to be a battle to try and corral the internet back and kind of mainstream media

be missing this in the most news in the summer. and one of the biggest problems that we've had in the united states is this doctrine of not offending anybody and allowing other things to gunmen such that we changed our training manuals even for local law enforcement from studying radical islam to countering extremist violence so we're not even allowed to train local law enforcement on what radical islam studies liberal policies or what is going to blind in cripple us because we're so afraid to offend we're never going to say anything about another religion and we're never going to look into real threats and so because of that we're seeing more homegrown terrorists because any kind of

a threat or maybe a warning sign is not able to be captured by law enforcement because they don't want to offend and everybody gets in trouble if they talk about it. the new u.s. poll suggests the reputation of news organizations is in decline and found that more than a quarter of american citizens now think their president should have the power to close media outlets deemed to be behaving badly or to kill a mob and call. meant and he went to the streets of new york to get opinions on freedom of speech. and the american media just can't get over the enemy of the people label first slapped onto it by donald trump a little while back anime of the people i think crosses a line i think it's reckless i respectfully ask that and this is a phrase that has a long historic provenance it goes back to the french revolution it goes back to stalin to mouth when the president attacks journalists we question his motivation at this point you could dismiss the comments simply as media oversensitivity or
1:45 am
biased against donald trump however whether it's media partisanship or trumps behavior it seems pretty clear that public support for freedom of the press is stark now at this point less than half of americans say they believe the mainstream media is working hard to engage an honest reporting now what's more shocking is that twenty six percent of americans more than a quarter say they believe that the president should have the authority to shut down any media outlet that is engaging in what they call bad behavior now it's not surprising that most of these media haters are republicans and it's no secret what outlets they want to shut down. do you think that's surprising to you do you think a lot of americans agree that the media outlets should be shut down i do i think they're smart if you're smart and you have a good mindset where you see different things then you would know things like that
1:46 am
obviously should be shut down especially if they're not telling the whole story that's a joke that's a joke once again this go back to page one three and what the press lead to in appearing in those twenty six percent being that you know the constitution i'll be brought me i don't think the pressure be closed down but it doesn't mean we have to read it or pay attention to it i just block it out. i don't really know what their definition of bad behavior means. if there is a clear definition of bad behavior i know maybe i'd agree with that statement more of course if they're imposing by always or inciting some kind of non peaceful motion that i don't agree with them and then maybe they should be looked at more in depth but it's hard to shutting them down often you jerk reactions no i don't agree with it now seems that the first amendment is the first thing that many americans want to be amending. r.t. new york. so time got away from us a little bit if you want to learn more about donald trump and his space where she

christie i is back in the studio to help us understand the details all that's coming up but first we start with this it's another day and we not to another blow in the ongoing. trade war this time china and united states are at it again exchanging fire with a new round of tariffs on tuesday night the u.s. set in motion a twenty five percent tariff on sixteen billion dollars worth of chinese imports that will take effect on august twenty third on wednesday china took reciprocal action leving the same percentage duty on the same value of u.s. imports to china also taking effect on the twenty third and china will impact a number of us the action by china will impact the number of u.s. companies that deal in chemicals and heavy manufacturing items including those strategically targeted motorcycles that we've mentioned previously the famed harley davidson company has a large plant the state of wisconsin which president trump carried in two thousand and sixteen and the company has notably opposed the trump tariffs while behind the
1:51 am
scenes discussions are reportedly aimed at resolving the tariff tangle the political risk are for mr trump maybe increasing business insider noted that census bureau figures show that china is the largest trading partner of twenty three u.s. states mr trump incidentally kerry fifteen of those states. and yesterday we reported on current congressman chris collins a republican from new york who was arrested and charged by federal prosecutors with insider trading and lying to the f.b.i. the congressman allegedly conveyed nonpublic information that's a legal term of art nonpublic information about in a immunotherapy in australia pharmaceutical firm in which he is the principal shareholder to his son who then provided it to others to trade upon mr collins said he is not guilty the congressman isn't known to a lot of people outside of the belly of the beast here in washington the benefit of the background of all those boom busters out there he was the first not among the first he was the first congressional republican to endorse donald trump for president frankly that's the first time i have learned of him although he's only

been in congress since two thousand and thirteen and prior to that he was in business where he bought distressed companies and tried to turn them around certainly a lot of whole endeavor one of the companies is innate i'm you know. therapeutics in january of last year the consumer advocacy group public citizen asked mr mr collins be investigated for insider trading and with that as background on mr collins here to discuss is our friend bartlett naylor the financial policy advocate at the aforementioned public citizen bartlett welcome we love having you on the show all the time how did you guys get involved in this and are you surprised by the turn of events unfortunate not surprised public citizen has been promoting reform with respect to members of congress buying stock specially where they are overseeing the very industries where those stocks are position and we pushed for passage of the stock act which clarifies that illegal insider trading applies to members of congress and requires reporting we published report it was authored by
1:53 am
dr craig home and that showed that the stock act has led to a decline in trading but we made two observations two members of congress seem to be very active tom price and mr collins and like tom price before remember congress and then the secretary of health and human services who left amid some sort of scandal a few issues arose with mr price and we asked congress and the securities and exchange commission to look into that and january june fifth of two thousand and seventeen they actually interviewed mr collins and it was seventeen days later that he got an e-mail from innate that they had failed a trial drug experiment leading him to spend about fourteen minutes before he decided to call his son seven separate times for the call went through and the son then unloaded the stock under after seventeen or so different trades the following
1:54 am
day i was reading a story about it he was actually at a. in the rose garden at the white house and got this call and then he is usually take fourteen minutes before he actually decided to. to allegedly break the law yeah i think it's sixteen minutes at six fifty five he gets an e-mail and then you can see him on the telephone it's actually on video because the white house picnic was well covered by lots of people and it was sixty minutes later that he makes the first series of phone calls because they don't go through and then finally about four or five minutes later one goes through and he speaks for six minutes with his son and when this announcement did become public i think the stock crashed like ninety two percent i mean it really took a dive so he was not charged with this apologized or boom busters ten b. five which is the market manipulation of this curious exchange act but he did buy a lot with regard to insider trading by simply passing along this information to his son who then gave it to others including his fiance and say fiance's father and
1:55 am
the indictment describes about six different coconspirators some names some unnamed now you know look republicans and democrats alike or have been doing this sort of stuff and trading and i thought that the stock act which was i don't know if two thousand and twelve perhaps was going to take care of it but that doesn't seem to have had a significant impact right well i think it's had an impact again trading is down as as we've documented in this report by the rating by members of my managers not just because there was told a congressional research service report that from two thousand and ten or two thousand and eleven that showed that actually members of congress their portfolio beat the market as we wouldn't like that well they had in flight information the report you reference has they seem to do twenty five percent better than the average person and obviously they're well positioned to actually oversee the policy that affects it the stock act did dot it fell short barring members of congress
1:56 am
from owning stock especially where they have oversight it did lead to disclosure that's an advance it also failed to prohibit ownership of companies that are actually in the business of gaining political intelligence from these. companies that would actually affect the stock price of these companies and again members of congress should not be in the business of trading stock at all particularly where they oversee the companies no way no how before we leave part when we talk about cathy cranage or who is nominated to head the consumer financial protection bureau by president trump and there's an unlikely opponent there. yesterday by the editors of the usa today which i just sort of surprised i mean i don't recall usa today being like really out there on presidential nominees but did this surprise you and i know last time we spoke you guys had taken a position so far we formally oppose the nomination and as usa today's editorial board points out she lacks any qualifications would you go to
1:57 am
a surgeon that didn't go to a medical school would would you get your car fixed by somebody who's never repaired a car that's what crowning or present she has never overseen a bank regulatory agency has never advocated on behalf of consumers she simply lacks the experience and in the senate testimony she was invited to explain her role at the office of management management and budget on the zero tolerance the child caging policy and she she would not. wide latitude to do that blending a trial everybody opposes child caging but she declined to do that so we don't think she brings the right sensitivity as well as it's clear as usa today pointed out she lacks any experience whatsoever and again we've talked about this is a consumer financial protection bureau not the financial sector protection bureau and you all do such a good job of being out there and making sure that average consumers are are heard and their voices are loud and clear thank you bartlett mail we really appreciate
